INSANE blue water in Zakynthos, Spearfishing least remote island ever

- The shipwreck beach in Zakynthos (Greece) is one of those postcard places that actually lived up to the hype. Stunningly beautiful but in August, absolutely swarmed with people. We knew spearfishing here was going to be a huge challenge as it was peak season, the Mediterranean and full of tourists just like us. This was our last Mediterranean spearfishing destination on the sabbatical so we sent it off with the best catch, clean & cook that we've ever done. Next we're off to Finland, New Zealand and Australia!

Thanks Ethan! It was a fun competition but as usual very competitive with the big European nationals involved.
Similar to kingfish but I’d say a finer grain on it and very delicious. In saying that I’ve not shot many 6kg kingfish so probably an unfair comparison to a 15kg kingfish!
This is one of the most beautiful and underrated islands in Greece and so many other in Ionian Sea you can see all of them with in a week ❤❤❤ I’m glad you loved it Daniel

Great stuff. Bought back memories of my honeymoon on Zakynthos in 1992. Had a couple of dives and was shocked at how few fish I saw compared to Australia.
Must have been loads more fish there in 92’ compared to 22’ though. Australia certainly has a lot of fish life but the challenge isn’t as big there I find.
Always pleasant watching you dive. You two take care and continue bringing us great footage.

I was really surprised about how nice this fish was to eat. We don’t shoot them very often in Australia but definitely will if I return there.

Congrats on catchin the greek meet. I heard that it it very tough to fish down there cause of too clear water. I see at your video that u can see the bottom on 30 meters and more. I have so much respect for you. I've always held the aegean as a sea you need to be able to stay 4 minutes 30 metres deep to catch something but I'm so happy to be proven wrong !

Congrats on your solo greek fish mate! very cool to see the way that ORCA gun tracked through the water when you did the old "cant decide which to shoot" movement haha!
Also quite cool to see the way you cooked that amberjack, id be very interested in doing the same with our WA Samson fish and kingfish to see how it goes!
Definitely a double take and panic moment on the shot! Would be fantastic to do one a smaller fish actually. I did it with a 15kg kingfish in NZ and it was divine.

Dan I sailed around Greece for 3 months this summer... Not much fish over there in reachable depths... Although I did get tons of lion fish, everyone I made them try were left stunned! Such a great fish but so bad for the environment... Win win! Greece is overly visited which makes fishing difficult and very often dangerous...
It’s certainly a tough place to dive but very rewarding once you do finally get something for dinner.
I'm a spearo noob, just when I'm on vacation where it is allowed. That amberjack was fucking amazing to me, looks far more desireable as a Dentex. An that from shore, on a total self organized dive, must have felt so great. So looking forward to the Finland videos!

hey mate, i have some kingfish collars in the freezer and i think over the charcoal with that marinade/topping will be a gun recipe! i've done Thai style toppings before but never mediterranean. will let you know how it turns out!

Looking good Daniel, bit of a side story but seeing you disappear down to the depths reminded me of a liverboard many years ago with a previous girlfriend.
As a non diver I would take her before lunch time so had surfaced early to sort the kit out....She was sleeping so when I work her up she was not ready and a bit grumpy. So I left her be! A few bubbles coming back to the boat, mask fins and a light weight belt I got down to the 10m mark grabbed the guides spare reg and we went for a 20 min cruise lol
She was look for me around the boat....then was even more gurmpy when I came back as she was worried lol

Very nice video. Flashlight is a must in Med. Sea. if you will be going after those groupers. Just one tip, when they "rush" into their caves do not follow them as you will have little no chance to see them in there even with a flashlight. When they "rush" in they tend to deep in their caves. If they calmly "cruise" in, there is a chance that they will not go deep, even they hand in the entrance of their cave and sometimes put their heads out from the cave a little to see you. If they "rush" in, just go up, wait 10-20 minutes and dive towards to the cave, there is a good chance you will see it hanging around at the entrance from the cave. Try to approach the cave from back or from somewhere where it can not see you coming.
Excellent prey , you did good buddy . it's not easy to catch a fish like that in med , especially in August ! Very nice as well the way you cooked the amberjack

That fish made my mouth water! In South Africa we call them Geelstert or Yellowtail, delicious!
Thanks Heinrich. This is very similar to yellowtail but a slightly different species. They actually grow over 80kg! Yellowtail are Seriola lalandi and this greater amberjack is Seriola dumerili - unashamed fish nerd here 🤣

Congratulations for that amberjack! It's probably my favourite eating fish...those groupers are so quick they can sidestep shafts! Yesterday I got one I would've sworn headshot and ended up hitting it in the side. Really quick. A very similar shot to yours btw.
