- CCTV has apparently captured the artist Banksy and an accomplice at work in Bristol in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The street art work Phone Lovers was posted on Banksy's website on Monday and discovered on Clement Street earlier.
Hours later, the nearby Broad Plains Boys Club removed the Banksy - believed to be on plywood - with a crowbar.
Jon Kay reports.
Definitely done as a gift for the club, great gesture.
Yes. Good job
*Robin Hood* comes to mind.
“It’s A wall” 😂😂😂
its banksy way of giving to a local charity, the boys club will stay open now ..this is the robin hood side of banksy...he knows its going into a gallery or private collection, he could of done the same painting on the wall , but instead a sheet of wood , 4 screws , voila ........
Bravo Banksy. Thank you for helping.
He definitely does that . He might go down as the most beloved artist .
He killed robbo. Fuck banksy
I think Banksy may have actually gifted it too them, How do you know that these people did not help Banksy at some point when he was younger? he might be trying to give back to them.
Kab RapDubstep I think my mam is actually my dad and vice versa. How do you know they didn't just get sex changes when I was one?
Banksy's artwork should be for the public to see. It should not be used for personal gain. The purpose of art is to open as many eyes as possible, and the only price to pay is your attention.
Saving a boys club helping troubled youth in his local area is exactly what he intended I would imagine
They didn’t show us the CCTV footage :(
How come no one else has mentioned this?? Isn't that the reason we clicked? I'm thinking the 2 seconds they showed may have actually been all they had :/
This just in, people collect water that is just sitting outside and sell it in bottles. More at 10.
An eery resemblance to the reporter.😮
I don't think I'd sell a Banksy original for all the money in the world.
then you are an idiot
Farmer Bob no he understands the point of Banksy's art. Banksy does street art because he believes art is for everyone, not just for those who can afford it. Your the idiot, that ruins art.
You are a stuck up douche
I did and got £300.00.
lol its not his to sell unless it was his door but if its going to the youth club and not lining his pockets then he can have it..
it would have been vandalized or stolen by someone else..
But maybe banksy did give it to them as a gift bit strange its closing down and he put that art work near them..
I think it was a gift from banksy. He usually spray paints art on walls, but he may have sprayed it on a wooden board on purpose
I fuckin love banksy
Banksy has stuck again! He's used the back of the toilet bowl at this Chevron to paint the Hawiian islands in all brown, spectacular!
Funny how they didn’t show any discernible footage of the workmen. Maybe powerful forces threatened them not to, but to tantalise us instead.
My roof needs fixing, if I got there first and nicked it and sold it to fix my roof would that be ok!
this must make banksy's head explode.
i used to enjoy being hated for graffiti and people thinking i was on drugs and some sort of lunatic mentally ill person for doing graffiti. now that its called street art and you have kids from families with real nice lives doing it and it's more acceptable and actually called art now leaves me socially frusterated and in a situation where I need to find a new outlet to piss the world off.
Toy
Where's the footage what!!??
It should be left on the wall and not removed so everyone can see it
Hopefully, no one screwed the boys club out of it.
Tries to manoeuvre around to question that it’s not his property. Regardless of his business or what service he offers. It should be donated to a museum. Shouldn’t be teaching kids violence anyway.
It's self=defense which will never go away.
I can see both sides of the arguments in the comments below.. who really owns it, was it right to take it, etc..
But Banksy CAN be contacted through his agent.. I mean, just ASK.
this is fuckin sick.....
How is it sick?
Sure, it might not be his, but if you draw a picture and leave it in the middle of a street anyone can just take it. Same with this.
SlowSlowSloth idk how laws work in England but who ever owns that property(the location) is the owner. If its public property then it would be the city's to decide what to do with. by what your saying i could just tow your car away an say its mine because it was "middle of a street "
Banksy always works with an accomplice/minder. He was snapped full length and a lot more clearly than this, photographing graffiti in Spitalfields in 2014, by London Dada's Art Axis. The street artist's hubris in turning up to the famous Balloon Girl shredding auction stunt at Sotheby's in 2018 ended up with his accomplice's video of the event momentarily showing Banksy's face in close up. Camera didn't capture SHIT.
FFS they showed like 2 seconds of the CCTV booo
Good on them. I think the last person who would give a shit is Banksy himself. Reminds me of his famous remarks about advertising and that we the people own it, once it is forced upon us in the public domain. He'd be a hypocrite to say his art is any different.
I also remember many years ago in London, I saw one of his fairly average oil painting works in a gallery and scoffed in disbelief at the price. Then I emailed the gallery agent and asked if he's taking the piss. A few days later I got an email from Banksy himself with one word. Yes.
Did you manage to sell it?
Banksy wrote a letter saying he admired the work that was done at the club, he also gave his blessing for it to be sold. It was sold for £400K .
It's currently in a Dubai museum
Making money from free, public art... bad form, regardless of the good intent.
I like Banksy's work even tho it's mainly stencil peices. it's the reasons/meanings/messages they leave. reminding us of what todays/tomorrow's world is. really thought provoking in a positive and negative way. but i appreciate his work. it's just simple artwork that delivers. Wether u like him or not.
This is NOT simple, you spend days to cut out stencils like these
Define simple. its stencil work. Don't get all het up over it.lol as I said, I appreciate his work.
k sorry
He left it in public for everyone to see. Obviously he wanted some random stranger to take it, lock it up and make a shitload of money with it. Yeah. Right.
In a letter Banksy wrote to the council, it was actually intended as a gift to the boys club
hmm.. it's a difficult one. if he hadn't taken it down maybe the council would have painted over it and we would have lost it forever.. but on the other hand I don't think he should be allowed to sell it.
I doubt it considering a number of local councils in the UK have 'protected' banksy's work and understand the value in tourism etc.
I read 'woman'.
Good for them....
Arrest that baldy muppet
Someone would of took it. It's not weatherproof now so banksy knew the guy was going to put it indoors who wouldn't? ??
You stole it and damage property so yes you are wrong
What a beautiful thing to do
The over zealous tv reporter. But is it your wall. Who cares. It’s going to save a club from closure.

your hashtags have no power here
Lewis Johnson haha
what is a hash tag? #yourdoglikepeanutbutteronyourballs
He always works with one accomplice/friend/minder/lookout. Makes sense really.
Mr Art Axis from London Dada bumped into them one August morning in 2014. Search; London Dada Banksy Unmasked for Real
looooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa waaAaaaaaaaaaaaAaaa
He did the right thing and I think banksy would have wanted it that way!
It's not a gift from out of the sky, it's you stealing someone else's work.
It seems to be a charity doing it, so... fine... except this guy doesn't show any kind of hint that he realizes that he might have done anything objectionable.
I never heard about banksy until it popped up on the news recently. To be honest he couldn't have been that famous. Besides its not the person that's famous, its the name, he's a massive nobody when he's walking down the street going to the shop or whatever, how shit is that? if i did something like that, id want people to know it was me and not hide away cos i think its cool and mysterious because it isn't. whats so good about spray painting some stencil cut outs?
He wants it to be that way, that the other half of the puzzle behind his pieces and what makes them so unique.
are you handicapped? like seriously? because 1. he is properly one of THE most famous graffiti/street artists in the uk, perhaps the world. 2. he is a smart guy he knows that if he remains anonymous its build as you said the "name" or Brand" and also this way its hard for people to tell if something is an a original peice, also 3. his work could potentially continue after (if it is just one guy) he dies and the "name/brand" would live on.
Just the name, not the person. Id hate not getting credit for my work.
I'd say the most famous in the world atm!
Some people just wanna have influence on the world around them by sending hidden messages through art. receiving credit is not a concern.
Good for them....
