Banksy's Shredded Painting Sells for Record $25.4 Million

- Shredding this Banksy painting couldn't devalue it. In fact, it just fetched the artist's highest selling price yet: $25.4 million. Back in 2018, Banksy's "Girl with Balloon" was shredded during a live auction at Sotheby's just after the gavel came down selling it for $1.4 million. It was a stunt years in the making as the anonymous artist built a shredder into the frame and waited for the perfect time to activate it. Inside Edition Digital's Mara Montalbano has more.

Critics: ART AT IT’S FINEST
While real artists that know how to paint get ignored. Banksy must rely on stunts to be relevant.

The real question is: when will the art world know that art is subjective?
Just about as soon as Americans learn how subjective freedom is.

I'm a professional game artist and got a B in Alevel fine art lol. Fine art world is so pretentious and disgusting tbh. I only really find other commercial artists in the game, film and animation industries impressive. They're the real pioneers of our time creating art thats never been done before.
There must’ve been a moment right after it was sold this time where everyone held their breaths and stared at the art intensely 👀
The seller and the buyers knows each other , don't fall for it , you're the target
This guy is a legend! Putting a shredder in a frame is just genius! 😂
This whole stunt might have to be my favorite work of art they've done. Couldn't believe it was real.
Whoever did the stunt is the master of pranks. See people's reactions to your art being shredded and raise its value. Win-win 😎
Crazy how a single piece of art can buy you multiple mansions.
У нас в Москве в моем загородном районе,ты и один по настоящему хороший особняк за столько не купишь)
This is what happens once "art" started getting corporatized in the 70s. It is one of the greatest ways corporate criminals and others of their ilk launder money thru making meaningless junk about investment instead of content and quality.
Oh you don't think a black and white girl on a white background holding a red heart balloon is worth 25 million? Even though it's half shredded!? YoU dOn'T know art my friend! lol
…they shredded it for a reason. They didn’t want it to be sold and the people should’ve respected that…
If that was the intention then the shredding wouldn't have stopped at the middle where you can still conveniently hang it in an museum as an truly unique piece.
If he wanted it not sold he would have shredded it completely.
@@QueenOfDarknes5 the mechanism failed halfway through. It is extraordinarily difficult to hide a good quality shredder in a frame like that. He literally had to build the whole thing from scrap and didn't have enough time to make several prototypes to test.
So the most prestigious auction hall didn’t take the time to take apart said art to verify and then proceeded to launder more money than expected. Shocker. I’m more offended they actually think I’m that stupid.
The likely why the art piece skyrocketed is due to the marketing that was put onto the art piece. That art piece was already gonna go for $1.4 mill without marketing, but after it went viral as well after the destruction and world tour, it gained pop-culture status.
Sometimes things become infamous like PETE TOWNSHEND THE WHO SMASHED & SIGNED 1965 FENDER STRATOCASTER GUITAR SMASHER is worth $80K after it got smashed.
His art puts the "Bank" in Banksy
This art piece captivates the ingenious of banks it’s not about the physical aesthetic. It’s about banksy and the stunt he pulled off. It’s become more valuable because it’s become more meaningful thus more sought after.
Such art is so trash
of course it costs more. It has a crazy concept and story to it. plus the "happy little accident" in that the shredder broke so only half of the painting was shredded.
a painting with a great meaning and message is valuable
a painting with this kind of story behind it is one of a kind
If it wasn’t for the fact such an incredibly valuable and stunning piece of art was being offered One might think this was a clever way to “invest” that extra few million lying around.
You saying if I draw a girl with a balloon and shred haft of the paper I can sell it for 25.2 million dollar?
It's spray paint through a stencil.. it's not even an only copy..
If ur popular then yes
Plot Twist : He shredded it half way on purpose, Now hes gonna shred the rest of it when the buyer gets it home! 😂😂
Lol. Right.
Then the value of the art triples.
@@liliumjade LOL
Lmao. Gotta love how the auction house is like "ooooh nooooo, we had no idea this would happen....who knew a painting weighing this much could have a mechanism hidden inside it...."
Even thought this was intentionally done theirs a video of him building the frame, he went their knowing that nobody would not know Banksy is sitting with groups of people who were trying to buy "love is in the air" until 8t got shredded, I belive he posted a tweet about, art shouldn't be used as a token and that it should be respectfully left where it if.
If anyone else would’ve used that exact same shredder and shredded the painting in the exact same way to the point it’s indistinguishable from one to the other even with a microscope it would’ve made the painting worth $2.19
Wish I had that kind of money. Only in my dreams, but the artwork is beautiful
It looks like it should stay in the bin. "A sucker is born every minute." So true!
Incase everyone is confused, the auction is similar to buying a good car, but that good car is only 1, and you have the money to buy it! You guys shouldn't judge what others want

nevies?? where u at?
The artist wanted to re-create the feelings the little girl had when her balloon flew away. But that's just my own opinion anyway and i think he did a wonderful job.
I actually had to write an essay for an exam about this, what art actually is and how to trick the art market
He doesn't get any of the profits. That should be the most frustrating part of this peice.
BABY HOW DO I LOOK, HOW DO I LOOK
I’d sure that 2 guys carrying that painting would be happy CUZ THEY CARRIED A 25M ITEM!
I love banksy's art so much its unique
I look at my 2 year olds painting and I know he just needs a shredder to be world renowned painter.
I struggle to pay my bills, put food on the table. I cant even afford a small holiday. If i had all the money in the word i still wouldnt spend more than £50 on wall art.
I can’t imagine being so rich that I have nothing better to do with my money then blow it all on priceless artwork.
It might've devalued if the shedder completely destroyed the painting and turned it to strips as planned. But because it caught halfway and left as a visible, one-of-a-kind statement, it became priceless.
I love that the artist keeps his identity a secret 🥰 I love his dark humor and abstract art always have as a kid so many meaning behind a piece of art it wasn’t meant for the painting to be destroyed obviously and I hope the new owner cherishes this piece
Imagine seeing someone who needs money but instead of helping him or her you choose to buy an art that has no meaning at all.
If someone has a few million dollars to spend and have earned it honestly why would you care how they spend it?
That’s THEIR business, not yours!
man you really think they buy it to look at it idiot? they use it as a form of tax evasion and to protect assets from being taxed
Absolutely no one spends 25 million on this so-called art if their money was earned honestly. Because honest people understand the value of 25 million dollars
Yeah,it is worth more now! He wanted to show how gready the auctionworld is and he gived them exactly what they wanted.
"Stop critiquing me okay! I'm a human being.. I'm not a piece of art"
Critiques: "Bravo!!"
I cannot believe one can be a celebrity and remain anonymous in this day and age. I think Banksy may be a nonentity, or even a group of artists who created a profitable scam. I mean how the hell would you even verify that a Banksy is a Banksy when the real Banksy won't step forward to refute a forgery?
True..
25 mill for them is probably 2,500 for us in comparison.
25 mill put in art for them is 25 mill saved in taxes
Banksy did not go all the way. If he really wanted to destroy the art, he could have built any number of devices. The shredder preserved the overall aesthetic of the art, and it didn't even shred all the way - it is still a mountable work of art in the end. Banksy clearly wanted to preserve it, and knew that it would increase in value (he knows the art world quite well by now).
No artist can make an elaborate ruse without anyone else knowing.
This proves it.. some people really have too much money! 25,4M!

More accurately, when will the art world learn to NEVER underestimate the intelligence of art collectors!
Never underestimate money laundering.
Unsurprisingly art is a method of wealth storage, transfer, and money laundering for rich people.

Imagine the work that goes into building a mansion worth $24mil or a hypercar worth $3mil. So why the heck would one buy a shredded painting for that ridiculous price.
Rarity (1 of a kind). Perceived value (or resale value). Billionaires can't spend all their money. It doesn't make sense to us because we can't imagine what it's like to have endless money to the point where value/workmanship or other things most people value simply don't matter. When you're so wealthy , I imagine you develop a "What matters is that I have it and nobody else" mentality.
Yet the hungry starve to death and the rich get richer.
Was my thought also. Thinking how many people they could have fed with the money they wasted on this trash.
I find it extremely ironic that a damaged piece of work is worth more than when it was intact.
Imagine, if when it went to auction again and then ,its explode . I would love to see that
