This is a video about a rarely covered topic, the touristic element of the German Occupation of Paris. It covers the fascinating anecdotes and histories of German life in occupied Paris and how they turned the city into their own rest and relaxation center, but it also covers the disparities between the German occupiers and their French hosts.
I hope you enjoy it.

Hey everyone, as usual you can find the sources linked here and in the description box. This video is almost certainly going to get demonetised but I hope you enjoy it anyway. However, because of this I'm considering setting up a members system where those of you who really want to support me can through CZcams, I would be interested to hear from everyone whether they'd prefer this or the conventional Patreon option.
Edit: If my voice sounds different in this video it's because I had to record the audio while I had a slight cold. Sorry!

oh my god... im belgian and my entire life ive heard and used the saying "living like god in france" to hear the history behind this is amazing, your videos are so stunningly beautiful.
The expression comes from the renaissance though.
Like a german in france you mean?
The saying came in to existance in reference to the absolute kings of France in the early modern period (ie the "Sun King" with frases like l'état c'est moi). It doesn't come from this, it was just very applicable.
We have that saying in Germany too
@@MaticTheProtoIt originated in Germany
I think the allies did the same after they liberated Paris (the tourism part, not the occupation). My grandfather (American) spoke fondly of his R&R time in Paris after he suffered an injury.
yeah i read in antony beevors book "ardennes" that many parisians said that life under the Germans was better than the Americans, because the Americans often stole a lot of things, refused to pay money and generally acted entitled.
@@spitfiremkiv339 I'm shocked.
@@spitfiremkiv339 I would like to think liberators are more entitled than occupiers.

@@spitfiremkiv339 Most Parisians were heavily aligned with the Germans, it’s why the French Resistance treated them rudely.
When the STO was announced in 43, my great grandfather took his bike and fled from Picardy and went into hiding in Normandy. He was working in a factory during the occupation and had been an artilleryman during the battle of France. Unfortunatly, he never spoke very much about the war and what he did during the occupation so that is all I know.
Life under occupation must have been humiliating and depressing.
Especially when the Germans invade with uppity and zealous feelings of superiority.
Must have been amazing when learning about D-day and waiting day by day for the front to reach you.
Thank you, France for helping us during our revolution. We’re proud to help you guys from the Nazi muddy trench Germany pushed you into.
Glad Germany was also freed from that nazi cesspool, after shoving most of Europe into it.
All the survivors, including my great uncle are the lucky ones.
That war was one of the most inhumane ever. Wouldn’t think even ancient warriors would be able to handle the kind of horrors Modern war can give.

I just find the idea of Nazi tourism funny.
"To your left you have the bonfire, please throw your guidance pamphlet in it".
lmfao
@@ems4884 no, for two reasons. It's too on the nose, and it relates less to tourism. You're not given books when you're on a tour of something.
This was really well made, turned out to be interesting as well, but what really stood out here for me was the narration and particularly the visuals, which were both elegant and made with dedication.
Agreed makes you wonder how beautiful the world might be had the Germans won...

The Eastern Front and the Russians were famously a threat that was held over German soldiers both by their own command and Western Allies holding them as POWs - in the 60 Minutes piece on the Ritchie Boys, one of them told of how since he spoke Russian and they somehow had hold of a Soviet officer's uniform. If an interrogation wasn't going well he'd barge in and demand, in Russian, to be handed his prisoner and that usually got the interviewee (a commissioned officer/Nazi Party member or even SS) to open right up so he could stay in the Yanks' hands.
I cannot remember his name, but I read about that guy and a few days later I actually saw him at a University of Michigan football game on Veterans Day. He was actually a Jew who had been forced to flee Germany shortly before the Holocaust escalated, and accepted a job interrogating German soldiers because he understood the language and culture so well. (I think also understood Russian because his parents were Eastern Europeans who fled to Germany).
Fascinating video, especially since i'm french and grew up in the paris suburbs and never learnt about this. My Grandfather was a mold sculptor (for metal, mater plastic etc) and got drafted for STO. I don't know when in the process but he "accidentally" broke a limb at work, and had to be sent home. I don't know much more as he died at 101 years old in 2011.
What an age. Bless your late Grandfather 🙏
Wow, what a fascinating story. Beautiful video.

There's a videogame that lets you experience this sort of contradiction, "The Saboteur". It's a bit off, but no-where else can you win against the German occupiers in racing go-kart style. Also it's stylish nature, as if taking inspiration from this video.
Also the fact you can just SHOVE nazis off of high ledges...even able to toss them off the Eiffel Tower. Best stealth kills ever.
I remember playing it for it's stunning art design.
I’m so glad someone immediately thought of that game as well! It oozes the same style as this video, so cool!

This is the same as what the United States did to Manila or Saigon
The irony is that France did the same exact same thing in Saigon
This is the same as what the US did to every country it invaded. They did that to us. They are the new nazis, it just that liberalism and democracy are the narrative they like to peddle abroad, while engaging in imperialism and colonialism for the same economical and authoritarian reasons the Axis had. I recently visited Paris a few months ago and imagining Wehrmacht jackboots marching down the same streets as I did, or drunk men stumbling through the same alleyways I did, all clad in cold, stone grey uniforms, and all the while the French inhabitants of the city starved and struggled through the occupation are thoughts that give me deep chills. I'd heard of KdF through the role it was to play in the distribution (and funding!) of the Volkswagen but not so much of their main thing. Speaking of cars, the picture of the Folies-Bergeres at 6:00 has a postwar ('49-52ish) Chevrolet passing by in front.
Very beautifully written documentary
Beautifully made
criminally underated, love the artstyle as well
Wonderful and well-informing video. I'm a bit surprise about the remark that "nowhere else could soldiers experience this so-and-so". It is my understanding, that the occupation of Denmark and the Netherlands was quite peaceful for the occupiers as well. Of course, Amsterdam and Copenhagen couldn't match the luxery of Paris, but Denmark was the so-called "Whipped cream-front" and "butter-front" as well because of the peaceful bounty of dairy products and, on the surface at least, easy-going locals.
There was something akin to this in one of the Recent Wolfenstein Games.
I forget which city it was in, but you read a letter, and it’s of a nazi soldier/veteran who vacationed to California or something and was remarking about it in a similar manner to the people you mentioned in the video.
Wild that it actually had some historical basis, makes it all the more impactful for me.

I'd suggest leaving the full French graphic unpacking STO on screen for a full second or so, I figured you didn't mean "Service des transports de l'Outaouais" but that's what I usually unpack it to...
I read a book called "The Perfume Thief", set in Paris in this era and it was absolutely fascinating
I think the city was at its Best during the occupation aesthetically: fuel rationing means no Cars, no contamination and cleaner air.
I’d say the 1890s-1910s would be better. All the benefits of low/zero cars without the Nazis. The French people would have been happy during this time.
