I've had so many of these comments guys - Wilhelm Tell is not on the 5 CHF coin, that's a popular myth en.numista.com/catalogue/piec....
Swiss cash is one of the few currencies designed in the vertical format, standing alongside the likes of Canada and Bolivia. But why did they opt for the vertical in lieu of the horizontal, and why does the general design of the Swiss Franc look so weird?

Right, those kleptocratic rulers embezzling money from their countries in Africa and other developing countries just wanted Swiss notes, even decades ago.

I remember when the notes first changed (the 50 Frank note was the first one to come out). I was in the train and someone in the compartment next to mine had the new note and everyone was so excited, it was given around and talked about and all in all a very fun and memorable moment (especially bc usually no one ever really talks to strangers in the train). The person eventually got their note back but the conversation in the whole carriage continued and it was such a great train ride!
Loved the vid, such great visuals too❤️
You're people have the trust in one another to just pass around money? Crazy!
Strangers talking together? In a train? In switzerland???? You are making this up right? They wont even say good morning to you 😂
I rarely use the bus to go to work (thrice the time as by car) but the last time I did there was a ticket control. In Germany I had that once when it got nasty but here in St.Gall (NE-Sw.) everybody got cheerful and talkative. That was weird and wonderful at the same time.
@@firstnamelastname4134 Well, 50 Francs is less than 1% of the average income, so yes, people usually do as their grandma would've taught them. "You forgot your wallet.", "You've lost a bill." "Oh, 1 Fr missing for the parking lot fee? Here, let me help you out!" Not everybody is rich, mind you, but the gap between rich and poor is (still) way smaller than in many other countries. That helps a lot in acting in civilized ways.
I remember the notion in my friend circle being "this looks like monopoly money" =D
As swiss I think that a big part of missing hero's that people who served the country, for example the 4 swiss war generals we had, they all work under the principe of "servir et disparaitre" - to serve and disappear.

As a swiss, i liked your video, it was well researched. One thing to note though. I agree that the fact that no person is shown on the notes is interesting. However, I would attribute it to someone else that 'swiss exceptionalism' - it has cultural reasons. It is not true, that the Swiss history lacks power and influential people. They were just not seen as our hero's but oppressors. Switzerland has a long history of successfully rebelling against authoritarian rule. Did you know that Switzerland didn't had a king since the 13th century? Switzerland survived by decentralizing power through federation and relying on consensus for national level decision making. This structures practically make it impossible for a strong man to lead. In Switzerland, if something gets too powerful or influential people will hate it. Cheers!
I want to have some of you guys planted in our population. They make authotarian figures into gods. Some even put them before prophets and same as God. Şike what is wrong with you? But it is mlstly because education system and propaganda.
Switzerland is a democracy done well.
For real ... @@OpenlyBritish ... Even during Corona, I liked their response.
@@wayandoas someone who’s working with constitutional rights in Switzerland, the corona period was handled extremely poorly. In fact, you should expect quite a drastic change from Switzerland soon. Since Switzerland was unprepared and has no constitutional emergency bill many anti-constitutional things were passed during COVID. This enraged the public and worst thing is: from left to right in the past few years they’re trying to pass bills that go directly against the constitution. No one seems to care though because they saw it works to go against it during Covid. (In the parliament)
They don’t even bring this up to the general public anymore
It was done so poorly we then voted 3 times on the measures and approved them all. Don't confuse a loud minority you seem to be part of with the swiss citizens as a whole. Also by "working with constitutional rights" I guess you mean that right wing movement that recently dismantled itself and not anything really professional or you couldn't have missed the votation part.
11:55 during the Sonderbundeskrieg, the most generals advised their soldiers to not kill any enemy as they were still swiss brothers
It should said in every war: we are still human 'brothers'
That was Henri Dufour only though. He also ordered his soldiers to spare the wounded, prisoners and the defenseless and forbid the use of cannons against soldiers.
This was great. Didn't expect this to be a exploration of the Swiss soul. I am from switzerland and I think you are pretty spot on.
one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that switzerland has been at the forefront of graphic design trends for decades now. to give a few examples:
- while nearly every country on earth has their passports follow the general principle of "large crest centered on the front with the full, official name of the country in golden, old timey all caps lettering above or below", switzerland's passport simply says "swiss passport" in english and the 4 official languages of the country in the top right in white, above a small cross. it's almost funny how sleek and stylish it looks when you compare it to any other passport.
- switzerland is famous for its font designers. many of the most popular typefaces among graphic designers are of swiss origin, hell, arguably the most classic and universally loved font in the world is literally called "helvetica".
- the swiss railway clock is probably the single most iconic clock design of the 20th century. swiss design has always excelled at keeping it simple and clear but not becoming boring and the SBB clock is a prime example of that.
- in general, the difference in visual quality of almost every sign, logo and other graphic design work in as opposed to outside of switzerland is clearly apparent as soon as you cross the border. it's not something the average person will pay attention to, but they will definitely register it subconsciously and it's part of why tourists often view switzerland as much cleaner than their home country.
Swiss here. We were actually allowed to voted on the design of the Money. Not as in the final design, but as in the direction the desing can take.
Are we ?
@@sidlerm1Yes there was a competition at the BNS were artists could submit their design.
It was fun seeing the old notes I grew up with again. So nostalgic
The Swiss money doesn't look weird, it looks great!
To me, they have the most beautiful bank notes in the world.
They also "feel" expensive
Unparalleled graphics paired with great music, and of course the choice of topic is so fantastic. I hope you can keep it up and expand on this style!
I thoroughly enjoyed the montage at the end; great closer allowing for a feel-good sum-up of the video.
+sylves.... And what exactly is the "great music" for? Is this a MTV music video or an informative/educational video?
Maybe we should be like the Swiss, they seem to have got a lot of things handled ages ago.
Looks like great minds think alike.
touche huge cultural and infrastructural things like these take an immense amount of time and effort to change to.
Of course, not an impossible amount, but certainly more than i could see a country like US bothering to.
Not that they don't have more pressing matters anyways.
I love Switzerland, but we also have to be careful with idealizing countries... this video sure stretches things a bit for the sake of that...
In any case, there's definitely lots to learn from the Swiss. They are respectful, efficient and insanely capable. But Swiss society also tends to be very conservative, despite what this video may lead you to believe (did you know it took until the 70s for women to have the right to vote in all cantons?). There's also still problems of racism and discrimination, both in politics and in society. But you know what? At least the politicians seem to consistently do their job. And the trains... my god the trains!
I am very glad to be Swiss but Switzerland is not perfect by any means. There’s still a lot of intolerance or ignorance in our society and change is slow here (one of the downsides of our democratic system). But if our country’s image can be a role model to others then maybe it is not too grave that we don’t perfectly embody that image either.
@@moonie_nouki You're missing the big picture. These problems you're talking about are the butt of the joke in the high spheres. No one actually cares about it.
The hands thing is really cool, and while most are obvious representations (an orchestra conductor holding a baton for organisation, grasping hands for collaboration etc) the scientific expertise one is very cool in my opinion. It's a a depiction of the "right hand rule" which is a shorthand way of remembering which axis are labelled X, Y and Z in 3D space, which is important to know since there are two ways to "order" those labels and using a mixture of both makes a mess of things
The 200 swiss franc note is actually my favourite! Its theme is matter and the backside depicts a matter collison, like in the large hadron collider in Cern. My favourite part is the list of time epochs after the big bang, e.g. the quark epoch up to 10 micro seconds after the big bang, or that at 9.2 billion years the solar system an the earth formed. I'm in love!
it is my favourite one aswell. but there is more to it since it is also a reference to the "Rütlischwur"/Rütlioath, Rütli being the location, where the 3 first regions(kantons) made their oath. if you google images from "Rütlischwur" you will see exactly what i mean :D
We do have a strong founding myth it just so doesn't happen to be a war. It's the signature of the founding pact and the fact different people chose to unite rather than were forced to and to this day still chose to stay together despite our differences is a very strong part of the swiss identity
❤

Lived in Northern Ireland for 2 years, we had vertical banknotes too since other banks are allowed to print banknotes in Northern Ireland (and Scotland too).
This video is absolutely amazing... as a Swiss person it always makes me really happy when someone actually does research behind Switzerland's history.
Another fact about Swiss bank-notes, they also contain a lot of data, the 20CHF bank-note for example has the names of different astrological bodies and their distance from earth in light-years, -days, -hours, -minutes or even seconds.
PS: The visuals of your video are amazing.
yeah, the theme of the 20 CHF note has a lot to do with light, so the distances are in how fast the light travels to/from the earth! I love that part. And the back depicts a cinema screen (also to do with light!) during a film festival, looks a lot like Locarno to me.
I'm only halfway through the video but man, I just have to say this - I cannot get over how _gorgeous_ the visuals and editing are in your videos. @@nicoloco1971If you say so, that's just what I was taught.
What makes it especially hard to counterfeit is that they used every printing technique for certain aspects of the banknote:
- offset printing
-digital printing
-letterpress
-screen printing
and so on…
Apart from that, with UV-Light you can see patterns and actually in the paper there are fibres that are UV-reactive, so they use special fibres in the process oft making the paper.
Also the new note seems to have about 200 different security checks and about 20-50 are revealed pubicly.
Source: I made an apprenticeship in Switzerland as a printing technologist, so for some things I probably can‘t prove with an actual source.
2:25 Actually, the official reason was more pragmatic. With a same width, you simplify and decrease the cost of all automated parts which handle bills in ATM, automated selling machine, etc. Hugh economical win with a little requirement.

Very good video. Very well done. One thing to add: there is one important character/figure, which can also be found on our currency on the 1/2, 1 and 2 Franc coin, the Helvetia. Which also gives Switzerland it´s official Name: Confoederatio Helvetica.
Well, Helvetia is called Helvetia because of Confederatio Helvetica, not the other way. Furthermore, helvetica simply means "of the helvetii", the Celtic people that lived in Switzerland.
Also, Helvetia is the allegory/national personification of Switzerland, which I think is important to clarify
@@first-namelast-name No it is not. The "Helvetische Republik" was first introduced in 1798. But the Name Helvetia popped up even before that. And Switzerland was called up until then the "Eidgenossenschaft". The name Helvetia existed already before the official Founding of the Confederation Helvetica in 1848.

Yikes, you kinda did Corbusier a bit dirty there! He sure did have some absolutely mental ideas but he also designed (and was involved in) some seriously amazing pieces of architecture/design. Often better to judge based on realised project than speculative megalomania
I hold Le Corbusier as an urban terrorist! He did design great things, but his path, followed often sheepishly by much less talented architects, resulted in the grey concrete ugliness of our modern cities! He had, both architecturally as well as politically, a sick vision of our society's future!
