  • Tear-down of my transmission that has a failed reverse, reverse friction plates are gone completely, reverse piston spring retainer ring has exploded into pieces.
The video is a bit chaotic, it's my first time taking a transmission apart...THIS IS NOT A "HOW TO...." video, merely just a record for myself.

Разборка трансмисии 722.424. Полетела задняя передача.
Это не лучшее видео по разборке трансмисси, тк это мой первый эксперемент по разборке.

The complexity of the inner workings of this automatic transmission are just mind blowing. The specialists engineers who rebuild these things must know there stuff..wow

    • @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel
      @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel  Před 7 lety +6

Actually the mechanical part is quite simple, only 3 major components - planetaries, clutches and a sprag clutch.
Hydraulic part is a bit more complicated, only because detailed design information that would explain designation of every passage is not available.
I guess newer 7 and 9 speed transmissions are more intricate, but this 1995 4 speed transmission is straight forward.
I think all this mistery behind the transmission repair is overrated, and we are being overcharged for these repairs.
My cost of all replacement parts is about 280CAD, most of them had to be original MB parts.
The transmission rebuild is nothing more then a complete cleaning, replacement of all seals and failed parts and maybe adjusting hyd pressures on assembled vechicle.
I don't want to sound like i know everything, after all this is my first time taking one apart. I just wanted to see what will it take to rebuild a transmission.
Im still waiting for parts, will see how the rebuild will go.

Hi Andy, good video, in conclusion what was the fail on the transmission, a ring o a piece of plastic broke. Thx for share your work.

  • @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel

the root cause of the failure was the raptured small seal on the reverse clutch piston.
when i got the car i did feel that reverse engagements were lazy, it would take 1-1.5 sec to engage. So i guess the reverse clutch was slipping a bit, cause there's no friction material left on the plates. The reverse piston is held in place by a flat ring thru about 18 springs that act as return springs. As the friction material wear out the reverse piston travelled further toward the flat ring until it came in hard contact.
So the flat ring broke into 4 pieces.

Great job and very useful information! Now is there anyway to prevent this happening? Also what did it fall off when you removed the front pump? For changing the big O ring for the pump the job is straight, just remove pump and unbolt it from behind?

    • @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel
      @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel  Před 2 lety +1

@@mihu202 Is there anyway to prevent this? i dont know, i've seen few videos with same problem, the part made from aluminum just broke into pieces. When i pulled out the pump the pieces of the disintegrated ring fell out. changing the o-ring is pretty straight forward, just keep the transmission upright and shouldn't have any problems, Pay attention to 2 sealing ring on the shaft in grooves.

@@AndyPMercedesBenzChannel Got it,ill take it apart this coming week. Now after doing some diggings ive read that in order to prolong the life of reverse clutches the trick is to use only half of the springs inside the piston, that way when engage R it won’t let it slip and it will feel a bit more harsh when R is engaged. The very first 722.3 trans had softer springs but no premature wear of the reverse clutches however due to a harsher engagement clients complain and they start using stronger springs which eventually affects premature clutch wear.

    • @AndyPMercedesBenzChannel

Thanks. Im not an expert in these transmissions ...yet...But from what i've learned...modulating pressure is responsible for how the transmission shifts, the modulating pressure is adjustable and also you can put a pressure gauge to measure it. Also there are shift kits available on-line, these are a collections of different strength springs that could be installed in the valve body.
I still have publish the valve body rebuild video, probably will be in a month or so.
Theres lots of info online about this issue, i think your transmission is 722.423 W4A020.

Maybe its time for ATF change. Also rubber seals tend to get hard and brittle with age, maybe it's time for a rebuild. I'd check the working pressure to make sure the pump is working properly .

I should wait long for the changing of gears. After changing the gears it gets normal. I changed the oil because of it but the problem with gears weren't solved. What problem could it be?

      Hello
The problem that the head was not found that burned the joint and the information I have is that if we take out we will have to do the rectifying to glide the head and may not be good to use again.
I ask for the value, because here in Brazil imported car parts and extremely expensive spare parts.
What is the value of a new head in your country, in dollars?

well. i dont see any cylinder heads for sale.
machining the cylinder head is a usual procedure, unless you have done it already few times before.
what you have to do is pull the head off, take it apart, clean the block and cylinder head, lap the valves, clean hydraulic lifters, change valve stem seals and put it all back together.
