    Great video. Salute to you sir. I'm wondering of how many bearings in the transmission other then the rear bearing? I had a 300se that made a grinding noise. I strongly suspect it is the bearing. I'm planning to replace both support and transmission bearing. Other then that, it shifts smoothly without any issue.

    What a beautiful sight! My odo broke at 200,000 km so no idea what mileage I'm on. 722.3 tranny on a 4matic saloon here. I'm wondering if you have any ideas on this. At idle, from P to D or R to D, it clunks pretty badly. When engaging R though, it usually engages smoothly. The jerk comes mainly from the rear, so it feels like the rear diff, of course, all mounts check out fine. Once in D, all gears shift smoothly, except for a part throttle a 2-3 flare (k1 springs on order). Since you've gone as deep as you have, do you reckon this is something fixable from the outside without taking the tranny apart?

      richicfmai have a search on ebay for a 722.3 master rebuild kit. Mine is autoline brand. I cant speak for its quality yet as I have not done the job. I also had to buy the bands separate as they were not included. (Assuming it is a 722.3 you are rebuilding, choose correct one if not)

      The issue is if I bring in the wrong part, i can’t return the item

      Daren Stahl the car was a daily driver for a single mother till the EZL blew, it was after that the car was left to rot in someones front yard who purchased it from a tow truck driver when the girl couldn’t pay for the tow. I have every reason to suspect it was driving ok. I did some short testing in my back yard back and forth and jacked up to see it shift in all positions ok. I have never driven this car on the road it was far too crappy when I bought it to do that.

      on these transmissions it is quite common for the reverse friction disks to end up worn out way too early- the reverse section is fortunately the easiest to access. I will go into this transmission in greater detail when I pull it apart properly. On my blue/black 124 i changed the worn out friction disks because the piston was over extending and it was making a grinding noise in reverse. I think if left for too long with an over extending piston from worn out disks the o ring for the piston can blow out. I've not had this happen though. My rebuild kit has all frictions and every o ring in the box. It's going to be interesting as I've not pulled one of these apart this far down (and put it back together anyway)

    This is a great video on the 722 transmission series. Is it hard to take it out of the w124 ? I think is not an easy jog to take it out of the w201 chassis

      on my other w124 i removed it from underneath lying on my back - that was unpleasant. But that car is extremely original and a garage queen so i did not want to remove the engine. On this one i took the engine and transmission out as an assembly which is easier. One day I will buy a hoist for this kind of work as my days of lying on my back are numbered - I hate doing it.

      Paul Mc Brien one day. Though i think I prefer a less permanent solution. One day i will move from this house and i’ve made it so very unattractive to the mainstream already.

    You can decode how much torque the transmission will handle from those number as well ;-)
    Where did you get the female hand model from for this video?
    I don't believe I've ever seen such delicate smooth white hands and arms before ;-))

      reverse is one of the easier internal repairs on these transmissions. If it were me I would be dropping the trans and dealing with it, but i understand some people use the 124 as a daily driver and cant risk the time it takes. When I do a major job like this it may be weeks before the car can drive again but this doesn't matter as I have a different daily driver.
