  • This car came in with a no movement condition, i start by checking the pump, it wa ok, after getting the ok to open the unit futher, i show it torn down and go over the parts for this trans. The diagnosis on this unit was a blocked up filter not allowing any oil to pass through, converter checked ok.
    Valvebody video coming soon.

I believe while watching this or one of your 722.5 videos, I took a screenshot of the Mercedes seal kit you showed while rebuilding or servicing the valve body. You made a point that the clearance is critical and for that reason, the OEM Mercedes brand was a must. Someone on ebay had several available just under $100 US, I bought 2 keeping the 2nd for future use. So, right after replacing those O ring seals in v.body, my reverse gear was losing grip after reaching operating temperature, which I'm assuming is the friction plate. I'd give it to a trans shop to replace only reverse clutch pack, since all forward gears are perfect, I'm just hesitant and may purchase a used trans and have it installed. The best part of this video for me is the general understanding I now have in order to communicate with a trans specialist (a must) and not appear to be completely naive, so I thank you for a thorough rundown !!

Reverse problems are very common, the clutches flake and may cause slipping in reverse

hi! Thanks for the video. I have a 95 sl320 and I've been learning basic tasks on it. This week I did the transmission fluid and filter. Both were original and didn't look too good, and the car now has 170k miles.
I managed to find a Mercedes workshop guide for this 722.5 online, and it says the amount of fluid has to be filled to the top notch on the dipstick, with the engine running and the fluid at operating temperature. The document says several times the amount of fluid has to be exact. Too little causes the pump to suck in air, and too much causes oil where it shouldnt be, and in both cases the fluid starts to foam and get into the pump and slowly kill it. I've been paranoid checking mine every 10 miles today to make sure. I think I have a very slow leak and just need to re-tighten everything...
After changing the new fluid, I also get a VERY slight grinding noise when in D with the brake, or in R. P and N are fine, and actually driving is fine. I appreciate this video because it looks like my B3 band is worn. I assume I'll need a rebuild at some point in the future. That being the case, for now I'll keep going until it stops working! (luckily I'm in socal and there are a dozen mercedes shops within 20 miles)
    Thanks for the video!

Thanks for watching, fluid sligthly over or under wont hurt anything, to low the pump will suck air, overfill it may come out of the vent, the reverse clutch is common to go bad on these causing a delay in reverse.

2:25 Shift up delay solenioid, used when cold to heat catalyst quicker. Uses vacuum signal to change cable length to keep trans in gear longer.

Hi Gary, good video ! I saw your video before rebuilding a 722.5 transmission, which did not move in reverse, all other gears forward were perfect. Did not find any particular wear on the clutch plates nor anything broken. I did not disassemble the rear with the overdrive since it was working well. Found in the valve body one little cup filter totally plugged with debris. I cleaned all the valves and plungers in the valve body. Now the box is finished, reverse gear works and 1st also, but there is no upshift. What can it be , can you help with this ?

Surely you noticed that the convertor was "empty" when you removed/inspected it? Also, the 4 inches over-full must have been a give away that the filter was clogged? Had the customer ever had the transmission serviced?
Was there any point to pull off the pan before removal to check for problems?
I can only surmise that the reputation of this dastardly transmission preceeded it's arrival, and the worst-case-scenario conclusion was leaped to? ;)
Terrific Vid mate. Some very good information. Thank You!!

+Justin Bryant One this car justin, i honestly thought the pump was bad because of the fluid level, when i saw it wasnt teared into this trans and didnt find much, when i started looking at the filter saw it was coming apart and all bunched up at the intake. I didnt see the converter. This trans was overhauled by another shop a few years back but the owner of the car kept bringong the car back because it never really worked good, so when it stopped moving his friend said to come see me. He was just here he brought me his audi A8 for trans work, he said the benz is running good. Thanks for watching. Gary

just pulled a 772.5 transmission today. found a piece of a broken spring sitting in the top of the filter. The car engages drive and goes forward no problem but when engaging reverse it will start to reverse and then stop and jump forward. I've had the valvebody off and given it a basic visual once over should I strip the valvebody or do I need to open the rest of the box?

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  Před 8 lety

+Leon Roode Sounds like you have get into the trans on this one, once out, pull out the pump, drum and band right behind the pump. The set of frictons in the case are the reverse frictons, the material may have peeled off, common problem, not really sure where that spring came from, is it a thin wire spring?

    • @leonroode

Hi Gary! I have almost the same problem. It started when tranny starts shift up 2 to 3 and 3 to 4 at 4000rpm. When going at manual then shifts at the moment. Last owner says that the up shifting problem is causing the vacuum. And at the last i starded engine (engine was cold)then i was reserving, then put drive in and no movment. Back to reserve and still no movment. The funniest thing was that, when i put tranny on neutral and press gas pedal then car like want to move forward but not moving. And every gear is like that sometimes even in parking. And reserve acting same way. Not trying to move backward but only forward... I added the fluid to normal (was lower then minimum) and still nothing. Yesterday i removed the oil and pan. Oil was clean, filter looked old but not that bad for stop the oil moving. In the pan wasnt some metal and oil smells like it should be smell. I hope that someone can give advice me what i sould look. My first plan was replace the filter and oil and then try again, but i think that this not gonna help me.
