- A Toyota master diagnostic technician shows you how to diagnose a camry alternator's noise and replacement as well.
In this video I will share with you a typical mechanic's encounter from greeting the customer to documenting the customer's concern to diagnosis to repair. Every repair begins with a Concern, then a cause then a correction which is a Camry alternator Replacement.
I will show a simple trick to diagnose Camry engine noises including camry alternator noise and problems.
The car used in this video is a 2010 Camry 4 cylinder 2AR-FE using an orignal toyota remanufactured alternator for replacement. This repair also applies to 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 camry with the 4 cylinder engine.
Tools needed :
14mm long wrench for belt tensioner.
14mm socket and ratchet to take off the alternator bolts.
pry bar or long screw driver.
replacement alternator.
electrical tape or 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery terminal.
The electric ratchet I used in the video is a Milwaukee M12 1/4" ratchet which I highly recomment to any DIY mechanic.

I just reinstalled and alternator on my 2012 Toyota Camry on my own I am a 50 year old woman in Salem in Salem Oregon thank you so much for the video and have a great life it works perfect
Awesome! I’m glad everything went smoothly.
You are amazing
L
Thank you for the excellent and precise detailed explanation. The shop wanted to charge me $600-$800 to do this job. In total it cost me around $280 for the alternator I wanted with good warranty (keeping the car). It took me around 50 mins total being super careful with the belt and threadings on the alternator swap. My savings bought many Christmas gifts.
I said screw it and just went ahead with this project. I followed this video pretty much step for step and everything is running great! It may not be that big of an accomplishment for most of you guys but the most I’ve ever changed before was a tire… Thanks for the great video!
It is a big accomplishment! Good job! Thank you for watching my channel.
It's a great feeling isn't it! Keep it up!
TCCN-thanks for the video. I am currently assisting my son with his 2013 Camry alternator replacement, but I am coaching him via Snapchat and we are both watching your video simultaneously. So between your video and me, he is successfully replacing the alternator as we speak. I thought the GoPro angles were perfect for me, as I understand car maintenance a little better. My son; however, needed me to explain some things from your video. All in all, I think your video is top-notch, Sir. Some background on me, I am a retired (29yrs) Army Blackhawk helicopter mechanic. But I firmly believe I get more satisfaction in doing my own car maintenance as opposed to paying someone else.
I changed out my alternator this morning with your help. Thank you so much for making this video. playing your video was just like having you right there at my side, giving me directions. replacing it seem fairly simple, but watching you do it helped with all the questions I would have been googling as I went, and especially not breaking any of the clips, again thank you SOOO MUCH!!! I thank you and my Camry thanks you!!!!!!
Thanks my 2010 Camry has that problem now with a whining Alternator great tips. Thanks 😊 for showing me to replace it!
I'm like, 90% done with this job and installing the new alternator, super jealous of your auto ratchet right now
I just want to thank you for this video. Because this alternator was on top I felt confident I could change this out myself. (2012 Camry) I watched this video and it confirmed it. Thank you so much for a great video. My son and I got the job done.
My 2012 Camry's alternator just went out as well! I want to do this myself but unfitting and re-tensioning the belt gets me a little nervous.
Thank you for sharing your amazing knowledge with people. That is a rare thing these days.
My factory one lasted for 9 hard years of abuse in stop and go traffic and one hour of lunch hour idling every day. I now have the Autozone one. I wish I has seen this video before and gotten the OEM alternator. Now I have the knowledge because of you!
The GoPro view was great because it is the view that the "mechanic" (you) actually sees. Also, you are "sharp" enough to know when an additional or alternate view is necessary to make the video explicitly clear. Thanks for sharing your valuable knowledge with all of us DIYers!
Where you have been all these years ¿ I’m so happy to see professional mechanic explain in details everything about Toyota.
I loved the camera angle. I have a 2009 camry with a alternator noise and considering replacing it soon. Thank you so much for the insight. My mechanic wanted $600 plus the cost to replace the belt smh
Excellent tips... I guess the point of not disconnecting the battery, and simply wrapping the power lead, is so the computer doesn't loose it's transmission learning data... A really good idea.
what happens if it does?
@@RealSuperImmmigrant Wife will complain it drives funny ...for a day or two.... and the clock needs resetting... taping the cable avoids that...
@@chevinbarghest8453 I didn’t tap the cables, it was running fine at the bigenin then it seemed like fuel wasn’t reaching the motor, and it turned off. Works when I turn it on and keep it accelerated
@@RealSuperImmmigrant it's shorts the wire to ground and blows the fuse hopefully it doesn't damage anything else
Hi, can you please tell me what Fuse it blows? My sister's car wouldn't start so we jumped it, got it home and replaced the battery. Now the car won't stay on unless we hold the gas pedal
Just awesome as usual!!! Thanks sooooo much. My daughter just had her 09 Camry original alternator changed after 400 000 km. Toyota quality amazes.
Thank you for the tip about unplugging the alternator to confirm that it is the issue. I did this and confirmed that it was the alternator making the noise. Saved me from just throwing the parts cannon at the issue.
@@driverman9528 After replacing the alternator I am guessing that I could have just possibly replaced the one-way alternator pulley but that required special tools to take off and it cost less to just get a rebuilt alternator.
@@KenDombeck tool is $35 pulley is $40, how did you find a rebuilt for $75? I have replaced the pulley on mine twice.
@@reasonablySmartIdiot The pulley tool I found was $135 not $35. But I admit I didn't search very hard for a cheaper one. RockAuto had a Denso for $140 but I didn't want to deal with a core charge and mailing it back so I got my from Napa and it was on sale so I got it from there.
@@KenDombeck yeah the tool rock auto sells from gates is absurdly priced. It's basically a two stage socket nothing too fancy. OEMtools makes one that can be found for around ~$35 and then you'll always have it anytime a pulley on any alternator on any vehicle you ever have goes bad and you'll only be spending $50 tops of repairs buying pullies instead of alternators. I'm just a big believer in investing in tools. Cost more the first time but then saves you later, and I find it almost always saves me a bit that first time too.
Thanks for the video. My alternator went out today and it was making the same whining noise you described. As I get older I despise working on a vehicle now but after I watched your video, I had the alternator out and back in in about 30 minutes. Thank you!
Thanks for the video, I just finished changing my 2012 camry alternator with no problem. Keep up the the videos and we'll keep learning together. 👍
I just replaced mine last weekend. 2012 Camry XLE with 192,000 miles. It was a pretty easy job, but I did have to pry a little to get it off. I checked to make sure the bolts threaded in easily. I also replaced the belt since I was there anyway. I bought a new aftermarket unit. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for your video. I didn't think I could change it, but after watching you, had no problems. Thanks Again.
Bless your soul for sharing your infinite wisdom. I hope you know how much of an impact you make on everyday people's lives like me.
You made it easier for the absorber! I'm gonna try mine tomorrow & wish me luck! I ain't forgot to thank you!
I like the POV and I love these DIY videos! I have an '07 Camry and a '15 highlander and I'm a DIYer. Your channel is awesome!
Thanks Mathew!
A + quality video, sound, angles, and dialog were A + with GoPro Camera. Need more videos with "Toyoda " engine 2AR-FE
Thank you for posting this video. You just save me a lot of time and headache. I was ready to replace the water pump, I checked with stethoscope the noise was louder near the WP. I watched this video and unplugged the alternator, the noise was gone. Thank you again for sharing this useful video. (I am not a mechanic)
Excellent video! Thank you for taking the time to do it super easy to understand great instruction
Thank you for an excellent and well explained video. Mine would have gone better if I had your tools, but I managed fine...Just took longer!
The way you explain everything is easy to understand, thank you so much
The most informative video on changing an alternator on a toyota. I'll be using this video to guide me while changing mines.
Excellent info/tips/tricks to make the job easy. Getting pin flush for reinstallation of an alternator makes all the difference in the world!
I loved the gopro. It helped me diagnose my friend's issue. We had the new alternator in in about 30 minutes.
Thanks for the wonderful steps changing this! Hardest thing was un clipping the clip! Took right an hour tops! I put original equipment Toyota Denso alternator back in it!
Just wanted to say thanks so very much. Your video was very easy to understand and the details were great. I have very little experience working on vehicle but knocked this job out in around 45 minutes and everything works perfect. Thank you again.
Yes, the view and angles were wonderful and gave me more confidence to tackle mines. Thank you and be bless as well sir.
Thank you for excellent instrcutions!!! Made the switch today and it well.
Good angles and camera placement, and often lighting (on cars, such as underneath) makes a big difference. There is a guy named D3SShooter who does this very well (Belgian guy).. Your explanations are nothing short of superb! Excellent walk-thru.
I just swap my alternator on a Camry 2012 to easy God bless u bro.
I love the first-person view of this job. This video is awesome and extremely helpful!
Just replaced mine thanks to this video! Thank you so much!🙌🏽
Thank you! Saved me time and money just doing it myself
You’re awesome man I appreciate the tutorial. God bless you as well
POV works well for these types of videos. Well done.
Wonderful instructions. Saved me lots of money for a straight forward fix.
I have a 2011 camry SE, slightly diffrent configuration, this video helped my change my alternator, luckily my tensioner was very close to my alternator and I was able to use a regular socket wrench
GoPro is good to be able to see what you're doing while you're working. Good work and thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Merry Christmas!
Awesome video! I have to do this job on a friend's car tomorrow. You helped a ton.
2010 camry Before i saw your video i cofirmed it was the alternator but did not know it had a clutch, very good angles and xplanation thks
Thanks for the video. Saved me alot time and money. Was able to get job done in an hour in 26 degrees. What stuck me was the tensioner. Didn't realize it was a nut that wasn't a nut. Just a nut shaped "knob" you put a wrench on to move the tensioner. I'm dumb. LOL. Sincerely though. Thank you.
You are the best in explaining this..thank you very much.now I can change my own.
Thank you! This is a whole lot easier than the 4.6l Tundra!
Thank you for this video. Your steps were perfect!!! All done with my daughter's 2012 Camry!!!
Love the video! Subbed. Now I feel confident enough to change the alternator.
This helped a lot today.. help save me money.. I appreciate the time u took to do this video and explain the details..
the go pro was great but it also helps you to keep both of your hands free to work so it’s a win all around
Go-pro was good. You do a thorough and easy-paced job, so I see exactly what I would see in a DIY situation. If you feel a shot needs further explanation with a better view, then, by all means, take the time to show that hidden bolt (or what have you). But your videos are great already.
Thank you for your feedback Gary! I appreciate it
Great direction, thank you for the video and detailed explanation!
Thank you very much man!! Great video very detail explanation my alternator was doing the same noise
Mine is 2011 and I think the alternator finally quit. I’ll have to check it out tomorrow in the light of day and hopefully I can swap it out thanks to this video.
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish you were in my neighborhood to work on my car!
Thank you for the video! I did like the go pro angle!
Thank you for the video. I was able to install a new alternator fairly quickly and correctly.
Thank you! I think we’re going to give it a try after we have the alternator tested! You have a new subscriber for sure!
We got it tested and found the alternator has failed and we’re able to easily and competently replace the new one with the help on THIS video! WHAT A GOAT!! Thank you so much for the money you saved us!!
Go pro is good, just make sure it's angled right otherwise we are watching the ground or the sky. Thank you for another awesome vid
You make it look so easy man!!
Trust me the first time for me years ago wasn’t!
Thank you brotha! Helped me a lot today!
outstanding video! Thank you
Thanks for making the video. The camera angle was fine.
great repair video, thanks
awesome video ..The world is really helpfull and you are one of them thank you
Thanks for the on-the-fly way to diagnose whether the alternator is the source of the whine! Also the tip on taming the tensioner! Greatly appreciated. The GoPro does get a decent view of the action. Thanks again!
Got it done saved a few hundred, an hour well spent.
Great video
Thank you
Before you asked our opinion about the GoPro, I had already planned to comment on how I liked it. The image quality and lighting was excellent for my taste. I agree with my fellow canadian commenter below that keeping the attention of the viewer is challenging yet necessary in this day and age :-)
Stephane L. Thank you Stephane! I value all my viewers opinions and appreciate it! Plan is to keep using the go pro and try different methods with presentation! Thank you again!
That diagnose @ 1:40 is a great tip!!! Thank you.
God bless you my guy!!!
Great video. Camera looked great.
This video was perfect and well explained. You helped give me the confidence to actually complete this whole job by myself. Much respect!! Thanks again.
very comprehensive, great video....
Why does Firestone say it takes 2 and half hours? If it wasn't for the belt I think I could replace my alternator.
Your video was AWESOME AND AMAZING ‼️ Thank you.
Now why does the repair take 2 and half hours at the shop? 😂
Did a good job...thanks for the video...Have this job tomorrow and thanks again for the help
We learned a lot 👍
Great clip nice explaination in detail appreciate the help
Good video, my sister just called and said her car started with a whining noise and the battery light came on, so I suspected the alternator. She was actually on the way to the shop for other items so let's see what they say but if it is, I will change it for her now that I have seen this.
thanks for your nice videos bud, we have a couple of reputable alternator repair shops in the area, buying a new original is verrrrry expensive in canada lol
I repaired mine for a fraction of the price, and still have a good quality alternator.
Doing great..👍
Go pro cam is good. Great step by step with good tips.
You sir are a life saving🙏🙏
Very helpful. Thanks! Probably a second camera for after video edition could improve it 😉
Hey its amazing trick pulling the connector out no one talks about it.. my car just whining recently soon Im gonna check it out the way you did…
angles were fine thanks
I have the same car but only notice the wine on cold starts or cold days but goes away after it warms. Ill have to try out that plug and see if it goes away, thanks for the tip.
Thank you
Another one of your excellent videos, great work. Stay blessed my friend and keep helping others.
I literally just had to replace the alternator on my kids mom's 2010 Camry. Wasn't hard at all to do but I was surprised that it was making that noise after only 128,353 miles. Meanwhile my 2K Corolla with just shy of 280,000 miles still has it's factory original alternator that still works flawless.
Your video show good and not go fast and makes me dizzy so thumbs up..
Can you do a 2011-2017 sienna 3.5 L alternator replacement? I feel so sad for the way they changed.
The man the myth the legend is back with more quality content :D
Thank you sir!
pro tip : you can watch series at Flixzone. Been using it for watching loads of movies recently.
@Matthias Alonso definitely, been watching on flixzone} for years myself =)
Love your channel and all the valuable information you provide. Saludos, Raúl C Pou
Thank u bro. U did that your thang.
My luck my alternator went out on me 3 weeks back and I got a dud for my new one bc I’m broke down again today lmao. Great vid tho thanks for the help.
is it possible to loosen/tighten the tensioner without the Xtra long wrench? im replacing a friends alternator in the morning and all i have is a regular box set of socket wrenches. plz lmk asap.
