Just the video I needed! I’m going to go make mine right now. Just a question though, when you said you were going to cover the chicken wire at night what exactly did you mean? What did you cover it with and was the purpose of that because of predators or to keep the brooder warmer? I am brand new to chicken keeping!!

Hi! Great question! I did it for both reasons. During really cold nights I’d cover with a blanket just to keep cold air from going in and I’d uncover them in the morning. During not cold nights I’d cover the top with a lid from a storage container because my kitchen light shines onto the porch late at night, which caused them to loudly peep all at once thinking it’s day time and time to eat. Them peeping like that at night is just calling out to all the predators. The second the cover goes on they immediately fall silent

Question! were you worried about the heater melting the kiddie pool? i am using pine shavings and they seem to push them out of the way when snuggling up.. i need to move them to a bigger area so was going to use the pool, but not looking to cause a fire from a melted pool! lol

Great question! With the type of warming plate I’m using it never got hot enough to damage anything and I’ve had 2 rounds of chicks in that kiddie pool one being in the fall/winter where it was turned on for weeks and had no problems. During the warmer months when I first made it and raised the first batch, I only turned on at night after 2-3 weeks of being on everyday because it got hot enough outside they didn’t need it. No melting, no fires and happy healthy chicks!
