I’m guessing that since they’re doing Mario Kart, he’ll probably be the main enemy to attack Mario on Rainbow Road.
Genius
That would be amazing
That would be so good
My thoughts exactly
Maybe he will throw his own shell
I love the image in my head when I think of Arlo running to his microphone.
I imagine the puppet bouncing up and down and panting
**Muppety Flailing**
A possessed mop
@@char5285 what's a puppet?
Me too
The funny part is that this guy was in the very first trailer. He's kinda obscured but he is there. Also, there is a spiny blue-shelled Koopa in the teaser that doesn't have wings which appears more clearly than this guy (as in he's kinda just standing there really obviously, instead of being really in the foreground and you can only see his shoes and wings and a tiny bit of his shell spikes)
Was wondering why he was acting like this was news, I guess he didn't watch any analysis videos lol
lmao yeah. went back to check after this video and I remembered correctly. Not really new information here
I said the same thing XD
Yep, also Spiny shells tend to be smooth in between the spikes, whereas the blue shell from Mario kart is segmented.
He does have wings though.
Just to say, the Spiny Shells and Koopa Shells do have a distinct difference. Koopa Shells have the one big head opening and the several smaller ones for appendages while Spiny Shells have just the one large hole both the head and legs come out of. The Blue Shell from Mario Cart has the multi-holes of a Koopa Shell, meaning it can’t be from a Spiny enemy.
That's why I hate that Nintendo insists that it's called a Spiny Shell. Yeah, it's a shell with spines, but it's not the shell of a Spiny. Plus, everyone calls it the Blue Shell, it just makes sense given how the other two shells are called Red Shell and Green Shell. Spines aren't even its most distinguishing feature; loads of other shells have spines - all of the koopalings, Boom-Boom (sometimes), Bowser - whereas the only other blue shell was a powerup that only appeared in one game 17 years ago. It's just stupid.
@@alfo2804 I mean as a Mario fan and kinda loreist I think I understood Spiny Shells as just spiny Koopa Shells, especially when Spinies the species have kinda spherical like structures rather than ovalish, IMO - I do agree maybe making it just Blue Shell removes confusion, although it does beg the question why SMW's Blue Koopa Troopas have no spines on their Blue Shells hehe.
Well Blue Shelled Koopas are not new. They Exist since Super Mario World. They are rare but they are Enemies. What is new about that Guy is that he is a Blue Spiny Shelled Koopa.
@@lookslikenik6931 that is what I was thinking. It is also the one shell that gives all Yoshis the ability to fly
That spiney koopa is gonna be so freakin’ popular when the movie comes out.
Add him to the games.
disagree, I believe because of the smugness he will be hated
The Spiney Koopa will end up as popular as Boba Fett calling it.
He will be in the next game also.
@@gooburt everybody in first place will hate him
Only Arlo can make a 10-minute video on spiny shell lore.
furblox50- "...lore."
*MatPat has entered the chat!*
you mean 10 minute and 1 second video duh
Oh you don't give the theory people enough credit they can make 30+min videos on a single pixel lol
Unless you mean
only arlo can make a 10min and 1sec video on spiny shell lore and it be entertaining.
Then I'll give you that lol
The item's official name is "The Blue Spiny Shell" and spinys are just the enemies that Lakitu throws, and the reason they're blue in Mario Kart is just to differentiate them from the Red Shell.
It couldn't be yellow because it could be confused with gold, and purple usually means poison, so that'd probably be confusing as well, so assuming they wanted to diverge from the Red Shell, Blue is the only color they could've gone for.
(Spinys never had wings tho!) Yeah, and the Spiny Shell didn't either, that's something that was added after the fact in later games, along with the Koopa stripes, but the original design was smooth and narrow, as opposed the bulkier and stripped Koopa Shell.
They can obviously just change whatever they want and say that the shell now belongs to this koopa, but back when Mario Kart 64 released, this was "The Spiny Shell" and Spinys are established enemies in the Mario Lore.
So there's that.
Remember when he made a 10 minute video on Mario eating a watermelon? 😂
Arlo will always be my main source of Nintendo News.
Also, a Koopa that can't be stepped on is indeed a step up for their species.
Maybe that's why Chris Pratt said something about "stomping koopas".
Hearing about a spiky koopa just makes me wish we got the Koopatrols from Paper Mario
✨evolution✨
Koopatrol: 😔
I mean isn't that what a spiny is to fair. Bowser too I guess. They're all types of koopa
It's honestly something to hear Arlo so excited for something, Hearing him run to the Was actually a really funny attention grabber. I mean this poster is exciting
The Poster is really good!
I'm 100% convinced that the blue-shelled Koopa is gonna dive-bomb whoever’s in the lead in that kart race we saw before, to reference the item. Probably Mario.
You were right
Considering how the blue shell works in Mariokart, I wouldn't be surprised if the blue koopa's role was to target the leader of the pack, most likely being Peach. It's actually kinda hard-core but imagine Blue Koopa going to take out Peach
To dinner
My guess is, with him being there with the main characters and how strong the Blue Shell in Mario Kart is, this Blue Paratroopa is probably one of bowser’s most elite soldiers. He also gives me hope we might see the trio of Sergeant Guy, Corporal Paraplonk, and Private Goomp or King Bob-Omb (the latter is probably more likely since we’ve already seen Bob-Ombs in the trailers)
Also the captains from Mario and Luigi remake side modes are cool
i hope a lot of iconic bosses show up in this movie
Weird call: I think we're getting a Wart cameo.
@Matthew Pimentel I’d be down for a Wart cameo, would be pretty fun to see
You're naive if you think they'll include anything from the RPGs
It’ll be interesting to see how much of the movie will tie into future games. Like, if they’ll use this to create new characters like the Blue Koopa or use it to reboot old characters like Foreman Spike.
Or Donkey Kong :/
@@cornjeebus oof
The movie isn’t canon to the games so probably not
I kinda hope we see Thwomps and/or Whomps.
@@RomanSimkins in a way, Miyamoto being as involved as he is means this is likely the closest thing to an actual canon we will ever get for Mario.
Gotta love that Nintendo is seizing the opportunity to nswer our most burning questoons. And this guy looks so cool. I can already tell he's going to be a fan favorite.
Arlo getting to that 10 minute mark 😂
"Togezō" (トゲゾー) is the Japanese name for the Spiny species, and the blue shell from the Mario Kart series is called the "Togezo shell" (トゲゾーこうら) in Japan.
In Japanese canon, the blue shell seen in the Mario Kart series is the shell of a Togezō. Meaning a Spiny Shell is the shell of _a_ Spiny, not a just a shell that _is_ spiny.
Perhaps he’ll actually be the side villain that will shock everyone for not being in almost any promotional material.
If true, this really does shows the love and passion of the people working on this film. I love the idea of a head "henchkoopa" that hunts down and takes down enemies lol.
The countdown is on, the movie might be ending its film production cycle and will be entering its marketing phase soon so let’s see what we can come
Up with
I feel like we kinda already are entering the marketing phase. I mean, McDonald's is already doing Mario Movie toys
The movie's likely done, usually animated films are finished far before release compared to games.
@@Hero_of_Storms actually I believe that's just because the movie was supposed to come out December. You can delay a movie but you just can't delay the mcdonalds toys lol
I like how he's important enough to be shown in the poster
just like how lumalee was important enough to be in mcdonalds
Yea
I could actually 100% see them making a joke out of the name controversy in the movie. Bowser needs to get out an order and he screams out “Blue-Shell!” for the big reveal of the character and then he just sighs and says something along the lines of “My name’s Doug.”
The Mario Movie really is shaping up to be a great film. I’m really hyped. The fact that the spiny shell koopa is billed alongside Kamek might mean he’s a high-ranking general.
I always assumed the blue shell was the fake Bowser's shell from The Lost Levels. Keep up the great work Arlo!
That wasn’t a fake Bowser, that was just another member of Bowser’s species.
that was Bowser's brother. and the shell woulda been huge, just like Bowsers is. so i would have to throw that theory out
I hope they at least make a tiny nod to Bruce within the movie, even if it's for like 1 frame

@@cav33ra Not sure about "replace", but I reckon that a Goomba or Snifit of similar attire might show up.
@@Mac14329 I wish it was actually the Elite Trio, or even the Koopa Bros.
But I think it's worth it

@@Mac14329 man, I think the Koopa Bros have a great chance of appearing!
Like, it's Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, they kind of love throwing references to forgotten characters.
My headcanon in the before times was that the Blue Shell was Ludwig Von Koopa's shell.
When the shell gained wings, I started to doubt myself - but then, Ludwig himself was given an aerial theme and able to float in the New SMB series, and (like everyone else) you can put wings on him in Super Mario Maker 2 - so I thought maybe they were trying to subtly push that connection.
Ah well, I don't mind there being an explicit Blue Shell Koopa general here, especially since it doesn't look like any of the Koopalings will be in this movie. He does look really cool.
But the blue spiny shell had exisyed 13 years before Ludwig's shell was made blue in NSMBWii. Before then, he (and all the other koopalings) had green shells just like Bowser. Not to mention, his modern shell still doesn't even match the spiny blue shell from Mario Kart, as his has orange rings at the base of his spikes, but the blue spiny shell doesn't.
@@LordLemmysLabs Not exactly true, Koopalings had different colored shells in SMB3 and SMW.
In SMB3 and SMW, Ludwig had a teal and yellow shell respectively.
However, Iggy actually had a blue shell in both SMB3 and SMW. So, maybe it would be more accurate to have said back then I thought it was Iggy's shell.
The point being, the blue shell was a Koopaling shell all along, hence its rarity and power.
But Nintendo kinda forgot about the Koopalings in the N64 and GCN days anyway, so it was always a long shot. Hence, just my headcanon.
koopalings have smooth shells between their spikes, unlike every other type of koopa
@@chaoticcranium that's due to the limited color palettes a sprite could have with the hardware limitations and should not be considered canonical, the official artwork had always depicted all the Koopalings with green shells during that period.
My jaw legit dropped when I saw that poster. It is an absolute thing of beauty even though it utilizes the same kind of formula for most movie posters nowadays (Plaster all your characters over a background that is unique to your movie and add in several elements that que the audience in on certain things in the story) IT. LOOKS. PHENOMENAL.
I also like the new blue spiney koopa character they added to the poster. He's definitely going to be a boss character for sure, he looks too official to be just a random koopa grunt. I feel like they're taking a page out of Sonic The Hedgehog 2's playbook. They're taking concepts we've seen in the mario games and adapting them faithfully, but they're also doing new things with those concepts as opposed to just inserting them needlessly into the story just to make references. It's genius.
I'm just stoked to see the lore behind the inevitable Super Smash Bros. crossover
They r just toys
Super Smash Bros would be the only way to have a fully connected Nintendo universe
Ah, yes; a post-credits scene where a giant floating right hand appears before Mario and tells him that he wishes to discuss the "Smash Bros. Initiative". Then the next Nintendo movie is a Zelda movie with anime graphics, then a Metroid movie, then a sequel to Detective Pikachu that ties into the Smash Bros. Cinematic Universe, and, finally, a mixed-animation Smash Bros. movie.
@@matthewmuir8884 There’s definitely talk about potentially doing a shared universe behind the scenes.
Smash Bros. isn’t canon
Arlo mentioned that the Blue Paratroopa is probably gonna be homing in on someone during a chase, well I just remembered there’s the whole Mario Kart scene at the end of the official trailer. Need I say more?
Over a year later and my brain still can't comprehend that they actually chose Chris Pratt of all people to voice Mario
sometimes I wonder what Arlo would think if he knew that all characters in Pokémon mystery dungeon don't have names and they're just named after their species
Imagine having a story so deep as Mystery Dungeon in Paper Mario. Arlo wouldn't complain.
@@ivanzoneBR24 I mean Super Paper Mario's is pretty "deep" although I haven't known much of PMD stories to compare.
@@zjzr08 Not wanna ruin PMD to you, but basically...
...in almost every game, there is a sad scene in the end, when the player leaves the pokemon world. I genuinely dont know what is more emotional, a couple that spend hundreds of years separated, finding again love but having to vanish from the world in order to save it or you, the player is the one gone from the world of Pokemon, leaving plenty of friends behind. What do you think?
In the first New Super Mario Bros. game, in the multiplayer Mario vs Luigi mode there was one blue koopa on the ice level that would give you the shell power. It wasn’t spikey, but it sure was blue
At first I didn’t think much of that new character when I first saw the poster, but man, if this character is the Blue Shell character, then you know it’s going to be wild. Awesome video.
in the middle of the video when you showed the poster again, i kinda scanned it real quick, and then noticed the koopa and went "what who is that" and I expanded my screen to zoom in on him... the moment before you also went "who's this???" and zoomed in as well, so I was zoomed in way too far 😂
Haha. I did the exact same thing.
This just got me even MORE hyped for this movie. A completely original Koopa/Paratroopa character that presumably might be Bowser's elite guard? Never saw it coming. But I'm interested to see what they do with him.
If you showed me that movie poster 5 years ago, I would have thought it was completely fan-made. And that's not a diss. It looks so well put together yet feels surreal. We're actually getting this thing like wow.
It was revealed in the firs trailer for a few frames, but now we know that it is going to have a big role
Could not agree more. It's a perfect way to answer an age old question while giving a narrative payoff (and maybe even a character arc) to to the guaranteed blue shell moment in the movie.
Does it give you enough faith in the movie that you think DK won't fart?
I am loving the frequent Arlo videos! The monster is back!! 💪👾
Arlo, thank you for bringing so much joy into my life over the years. I had never even thought about the blue shell’s origin before this, now I’m completely invested
ooh fun facts about the MK shell origins: They're based on enemy behavior! Green Koopa Troopas always move in a straight line unless they hit a wall, Red Koopas can change direction on their own, and Spinies get dropped down on you from above. I'm guessing the Spiny Shell was changed to blue to make it distinct from the Red Shell.
In case the feedback is helpful - I do like the frequent posts, even if they're puppet-less ones like this. This channel is a big chunk of my background sound when I'm at home, and weirdly, pretty much the only video game channel I watch. Win-win stuff right there - please don't feel like it's annoying or changes the style of the channel to something less-quality/twitch streamer-y - it really doesn't hit like that 👌

Chris Pratt in my opinion is a good Mario his Brooklyn accent is awesome.
"You cant escape me..." That's all I can remember, the momment he emerged from flame, what a scene.
It would be so funny if this koopa's quirk is that he hates anyone who is winning. So he's constantly after Mario every time he has a major victory, and then at the end it looks like Bowser's about to win, and he gloats about how he is number one or something, and it zooms in on the blue spiny koopa as his eyes narrow and then he just turns around and wrecks his former boss.
3 videos in a week? You just made my week!
I hope they answer the most popular question regarding this rare Koopa:
Will he walk off a ledge of turn around?
My guess is that the movie is taking a page from Sonic in that it's a separate "continuity" or it's the long-awaited and forgotten about origin for the super Mario Brothers super show.
Loving these videos lately Arlo, great job~
This spiny blue shelled koopa must be Spike, the character Sebastian Maniscalco is said to be voicing.

Wow thank you for making this video Arlo. It really never occurred to me that we don't know where blue shells come from. Blowing my mind here.
The blue spiny koopa was in the first trailer at 1m07s when the big snowball from the catapult hits the line.
Thank you, it annoyed me that Arlo forgot about the first trailer, didn't even watch this full vid just scanned ahead and noticed no footage.
A spiny is a type of koopa actually. Most of Bowser's forces are koopas, including things like Buzzy Beetles, Lakitu, and even stuff like Charging Chucks and Hammer Bros.
pretty coooool. My biggest lore related feature id like to see in this movie is some distant memory that Mario cant in fact tell is a dream or memory of going on The Yoshi's island adventure as a baby
As soon as you mentioned this character possibly being something like the "#1 minion" makes me think that maybe he's in the poster as an important character because he's a general, whereas Kamek is closer to being Bowser's royal advisor
Actually, now that I think about it, when’s the last time we saw _any_ Koopa with spikes on its shell, besides Bowser’s family? Not to mention, Yellow Koopas are probably _even more_ rare than blue ones because they appear in fewer games. I wonder if we’ll see all 4 color variants in the movie?
Bowser doesn’t really have a family, just a son.
@@RomanSimkins the Koopalings may not be his biological children, but they share more of a resemblance to him than any other Koopa.
@@BBWahoo ?
It’s weird how Arlo never mentioned the fact that super Mario world has way more corporate variations for koopas. I guess it’s a generation thing and he’s a n64 kid.
@@RomanSimkins I assume they’re referring to the Koopas in SMW that had a flashing shell, where it would alternate between colors and home in on Mario.
Also, unrelated, but I just discovered that Dry Bones in the baseball spin-off games has a spiny variant, making this the closest we’ve seen of a regular Koopa with spikes. Since Dry Bones is an undead Koopa, does this imply that spiny Koopas are extinct?
Something else to note is that Spiny Shells in Mario Kart 64 were smooth, whereas the Red/Green Shells had hexagonal grooves patterned onto them. This is interesting because Spinies, the actual enemy, are also depicted as having smooth shells. Maybe the original plan _was_ for the item to be from a Blue Spiny, instead of a Blue Koopa. Or maybe I’m just overlooking continuity in Mario of all things
In terms of the lore in the actual games themselves, Koopa Shells are treated as clothing. Koopas are seemingly not born with shells (see: Jr Troopa in PM64). Their shells are disposable in games like Mario Kart. There's old artwork depicting Koopa Troopas shopping for new shells at a store. And of course, we have "Beach Koopas" which are Koopas that aren't wearing their shells at all.
I'd assume shells are created. I like to headcanon that there are "shellsmiths" that craft up the shells. But it could be anything really. Perhaps Magikoopas use their magic to create them.
The spiny shell is probably a super important type of shell, and the fact we are seeing a Koopa Troopa wear one in the movie is pretty freaking cool. I wonder if we'll ever see any Spiny Blue Koopa Troopas in the actual games.
Thought I included this in the original comment but I didn't, whoops!
Fun little fact: Bowser was ALSO probably not born with a shell.
There's a bunch of tiny little tidbits that lead us to this, but the main ones are that Bowser can buy/switch shells in RPG games, as if they're clothing. And Bowser shells are abundant & disposable in Mario Kart. Like for whatever reason there's just a bunch of full size Bowser shells that can be thrown and destroyed in Double Dash and Mario Kart Tour.
Bowser Jr's shell even has less plates than Bowser, implying that when he gets older his old one will stop fitting him.
Koopa shell lore is super surface-level but it's super cool at the same time!
There are even non-Koopas that just wear shells for some reason.
Conkdors wear shells, and Rocky Wrenches used to wear shells as well.
I would absolutely love Blue Koopas in new Mario Bros games, imagine stomping on one then taking its shell and when you throw it the shell auto-aims for any enemy on screen then makes a small explosion damaging multiple enemies in that area. Could be used for cool entrances to secret areas.
And in some Mario games theres two mini castles in each biome, the first castle has a kooplaling who then hops over to the next when defeated, but instead they could have the Blue Koopa in the first castle and the koopaling in the second.
You're the best arlo. From the looks, he seems like he's gonna be like a hunter or assassin that's gonna be tracking Mario down.
I can’t wait for this movie!

Watching the background footage hurts my inner mario kart player
As an old ass Mario fan (born in 1980) I remember when Mario had “lore” at least in terms of cartoons and the short lived comics by Valiant Mario and Luigi were plumbers from Brooklyn who fell down a sewer drain. And that was the accepted origin until Yoshi’s Island retconned it. But it does seem as the movie is retconning the retcon.
None of these things are "retcons" of eachother, they are just separate canons
Only Arlo can make a 10 minute video on the blue shell
I give Arlo 3 DK farts out of 3
There is a Mario Kart scene. From what I heard this movie is going to be PACKED with references from all of Nintendo History
This is worth making a video on: it's the Internet! We pick out any old triviality and turn it into a whole world. It's fun; don't stop :)
The only lore I want to know is what’s going on between Bowser and Peach. They aren’t fooling me with all these “kidnappings.”
He does it to gain control over the mushroom kingdom and to harness her power for himself. This was stated many times in the Mario Franchise , usually in the manuals for the games or by bowser or peach.
@@danielcalk955 In the original game Peach was the only person who had the power to reverse Bowser's "dark magic" which led to Bowser kidnapping her but it seems like most of that magic-y stuff has been abandoned/retconned since then.

Floating heads work really well for this one, it captures the grand adventure, shows iconic characters, and displays some good if not a little generic bits of personality, I think Mario and Peach should have swapped places however. Maybe the evil on one side, good on the other theming could have been more prominent, then again I feel they went for that, realized the villain cast is essentially two people, threw in a somewhat sizeable role in the movie, then called it a day.
