This new Roscoe is completely different from last year's model. The only thing it shares is the name. I'm excited for this model to start hitting sales floors soon.
Can you lower the seat post further if you remove the water bottle bolts?
Any idea when they might arrive at bike shops . A few months ago after you mentioned the new Roscoe I went to a dealer here in Phoenix and they said the 9 model wouldn’t be available until 2023 which didn’t make sense to me . Why announce a new bike if it wouldn’t be available for another year. Seeing that you have one hopefully they’ll be available early 2022 .

I've got a frame coming at the end of February so it wont be long but yet it is forever lol
Some dealers will get lucky and are getting shipments of these in the coming weeks. Other dealers will have to wait a bit longer.

It’s refreshing that Trek has updated the Geo and went “all in” with this Roscoe. It’s obvious that they realized that a segment of hardtail buyers are not just budgeted buyers that want an entry level bike but can’t get a full suspension. Look again at the Geo and the fork. It’s a better fork and more advanced Geo than many full suspension bikes with 130-140 travel. You forgot to mention that Trek now uses threaded BB and I definitely feel that is an upgrade.

Great unboxing breakdown, please post a ride review soon. I think it looks really good, and Trek did well with it. Have you done a video about how you dial in your forks? I've never had a fork that I felt I got working as good as it could, and that even following lots of directions properly.

I have been watching your channel for years! I've been riding the same Schwinn Homegrown Factory Team since 1999 (made at the Yeti factory). It's been a single speed for the last 10 or so years. I finally pulled the trigger on a new bike this week and got the Roscoe 9. Thank you so much for this thoughtful and thorough review as it really helped with decision making, I would have rather purchased a smaller brand or something more unique but in Halifax, Nova Scotia this was the only bike I could test ride in this class. I am a hair shorter than 5'8". I test rode the ML and the reach felt fantastic but with the dropper extended and inserted as far as it would go it was just long enough that my knee locked out and it wasn't going to work without switching to a shorter travel post. The shop had to order a Medium. I bring this up for anyone test riding-be sure the shop adjusts the seat height before you pull the trigger! And now I have to rewatch your video on how to ride a modern geometry hardtail!!
Nice review as always. This bike looks very similar to the giant fathom. I’m glad trek and giant finally went with boost thru bolt axles.
Nice first look. It would be a pretty tough choice for me between the 8 and 9 both are very competent builds. The RS 35 is a good enough fork that I wouldn't be tempted to change it out. If it were to be my only bike I would probably go 9, if it were a secondary bike I would go for the 8. The 8 also has nicer color options fwiw.

The Rapid drive hub has 108 points of engagement. I've got several sets of Bontrager wheels, alloy and carbon with the Rapid drive hubs. They roll really well
Also, I think the Roscoe 8 is 54 points of engagement. The pawl upgrade to make it 108 costs about $30 and takes about 5 minutes to do even if you've never done it before.
@@oklahotb3217 the 8 apparently has the same hub as the 9, which is cool to see.
party you are right. The 7 has Shimano hubs, not the Bontrager hubs so the upgrade I was referring to doesn't apply. I'll edit my post.

My wife has a Roscoe 8 on order in a pretty blue sparkle colour. I’m looking forward to throwing a leg over it too and comparing how it rides compared to my v7 alloy chameleon. Interestingly a lot of riders don’t like the fatter tyres and don’t go past 2.5’s because the larger contact patch feels too floaty.
I’m on the list for a Roscoe 7, I have been waiting for this review for a long time. So excited!
Orbea just released the new Laufey (same frame as Dusty Betty’s). You indicated the Roscoe may not be fun to pedal around, I’d be interested if you think it’s similar to the Laufey.
Little late to the party! Like some of the other reply's you also convinced me on another bike, a Ragley! My mmmbop will be delivered Friday. Love my Roscoe 9. got new stem, bars, dropper, rorors, and grips. Its a beast! I ride everything on this. It could corner a bit better but otherwise its amazing, it really is
Interesting video on all points. My paradox build is pretty similar to this for not a lot more money - about $300 aud, but that took about 5 months sourcing parts and building it up. If I had the chance to pick up something like this with similar specs on paper I probably would have.
I had my heart set on the Roscoe 7 when It was first released, the closest shop near me that could give me an estimate said I would not get it till Thanksgiving 2022...

Tried to order a Roscoe 7 from my LBS but was told earliest delivery is Aug/Sep 2022. Shopped around and found a 2022 Fuse Comp 29 in another city 3500 km away. Bought it. Couldn't wait until late next summer.

Great looking bike! Trek is one of the few companies that can shift the industry, which is a good thing when they do good things. I know this is a trail bike but would have loved clearance for a full 29x3. Still have my 2015 Stache (the last before the 29+ version) and it’s still a great bike despite the “old” geo. Keep ‘em coming!

My wife's on her gravel bike with mix-road wheels has these Trek hub with the 108 points and it's be great. We got it for a cheap price as the owner was upgrading to carbon wheels for his xc bike. It has been issue free all summer through fall. Would do it again. I think Trek use to partner with DT Swiss to make their hubs & learned from them.
Even my old ,2020 Roscoe 7 wasn't a bad bike. It was budget, don't get me wrong but for a winter bike next to my Cptic full suspension it was great and I loved it. I spent more on upgrades than the bike cost but thats by the by 😂
I was told April would be the earliest I could get one. I guess I will wait to get started in MTB.
Great vid... Problem with bikes and droppers, is they have to aim at the lowest denominator i.e. what will the shortest legs be on this steed.
Having owned a few bikes now and having been in the sport for close to a decade, I've learnt that your personal preferences are always going to necessitate changes out of the box.
As you pointed out, bars will need trimmed and/or swapped, grips will need swapped, saddles, longer dropper posts (my fav is Oneup due to being able to adjust travel incrementally) etc.
Good sound advice and I look forward to your thoughts on the ride.

After your earlier video, half year ago, about this upcoming Roscoe, I decided to order a red coloured Roscoe 9. Especially your enthusiasm about the geometry with the fork and explanation about this combo instead to look at the group of the drive train. Try local Trek dealer will change the whole brakes and the shifter to XT (why doesn’t Trek install a XT shifter with a SLX derailleur) and a other dropper with a XTR leveller, because there is no XT version. 😅
Expected month of delivery is June of 2022. 🥵
I’m 1.76m and at this moment I cycle on a 2020 X-Caliber 9 size M, it felt to small so I’ve ordered a M/L (with the agreement to change to an other size if necessary).
N.B. The old Roscoe and the X-Caliber used the same frame.
When I saw that the Stache was discontinued I wondered if this was going to happen. Really like the specs.
I ordered the Roscoe 8 today because it had the best delivery date. Delivery of April 2022. The 7 was June and the 9 was to be delivered in 2025 XD. Cant wait to ride!
I just tried out a friend's 2018 Trek fuel . The ride was plush and the cornering was great but I did not have any more or less fun with my budget hardtail so it has not persuaded me to go full suspension but I will give it a few more rides
“The hardtail is the right choice for some people.” TRUTH! That’s what I choose to ride. All. Day. Long. I still love my Stache, but this Roscoe sounds cool.
Will be looking forward to the review on this. Really excited to see you get this. Paint concept is cool on this bike, but the color choice is a bit drab for me. But if it rides well who cares!
Super late to the party but I just purchased a Roscoe 7. As a newb to the sport I just wasn’t willing to dish out the extra money for the 8 or 9 and felt the 7 was great value from the research I did. So far I am loving it and the geo is amazing. My last bike was an older specialized rockhopper and I can tell a huge difference in the capabilities and just having the confidence to hit features.

You don't need to sacrifice dropper length for a water bottle, or sacrifice a water bottle for dropper length. You CAN mount a water bottle on a frame without traditional bottle mounts. Just clamp, tape, or lash it on(and be able to position it exactly where you want it), and have a short seat tube that you can shove a dropper all the way into.
This could be my next progression, currently on a very heavily modified Marlin 8 and im outgrowing it
Looking forward for a ride review. I was looking on the previous version, but the geo was not quite what I wanted. So it is good to see that Trek made such an update. I was patient and waited for new version of Qayron Spyro. Glad I didn't choose the older Trek ;) With the new one the decision would be much difficult. Great overview as always, Steve. Are used to have one of the Gary Fisher Roscoes that was a full suspension back in the late 2000s if that was a mullet I would definitely buy one
I find it funny that I built up my Ragley Big Al while working at a Trek dealer and a lot of the guys were questioning why I was building a roudy HT for Arizona? These new Roscoes will fly off the floor.

@@fongdong2725 Before I could even ride it my gf leaned another bike up against it and chipped the paint on the top tube. Lucky they supplied it with touch up paint which is nice. Something Trek and many others don't do.
Good looking bike. Trek did a good job with this one. I still wish the Stache would've been upgraded.

Great review Steve!!! Just saw the new NP top of the line is $4499 au that's an extra $800 more than the Roscoe 9! I've test rode the 8 recently and loved it, going for the 9 don't really dig the colour but its just way more economical.
I may need your service. I am on the fence of getting a new full suspension getting rid of my current fs. Then considering getting this trek and keeping my 14 slash with a nice service. 2 fun bikes or one great game bike. First and foremost most are you smiling on your 🤷♂️
The only thing I'd upgrade is the SLX shifter to an XT for the multi-upshift. Also, the Roscoe 8 (blue) is a much nicer colour!

I was waiting a year and a half for kona's big honzo dl to become available. It took so long, the Trek roscoe 9 was debuted by the time kona's 22 model became available, so I was debating on whether to go with the trek or kona. I raced bmx 20yrs ago and felt like a 27.5 tire would be a little more fun. There were no 9s available yet when I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a the big honzo dl a few months ago. Interested to hear your thoughts and see the review. Hopefully I didn't make too wrong of a decision lol.

You mentioned a preference for the reach being greater than the chainstay length. Why is that and what kind of effect does it have on the ride? Also, does this preference apply to XC bikes as well? I have an XC bike and after seeing this vid I looked up my bike's geometry and discovered that the chainstay (435mm) is actually longer than the reach (420mm) for a size medium. It does have a pretty slack head tube angle for an XC bike though, 67 degrees and a longer than normal wheel base at 1144.5, kinda leaning a little bit towards trail geometry.
Im curious to get your opinion regarding the quality of the integrated headset cup to bearing interface and alignment( relative to other bikes on your channel). I have a 2019 Trek, and im curious if i just got a 🍋, or if the baggy, and wobbly (not flush) fit is typical. I have only 1 other bike with an integrated headset, and the difference is night and day.

I have a Roscoe 8 on order due for delivery in February 2022 but I just picked up a new Salsa Timberjack SLX 27.5, problem is I still kinda want the roscoe too 😂

The Esker you reviewed also was 2.6 on 30mm, no? Kona also specs 30mm 2.6 on their Unit line up too. Maybe 32mm internal would be the better choice here 2.8 wouldn't fit in the front and rear would it?

In the specification of Trek is the Shimano BR M6120 four piston break (Deore) installed on this bike. But in your video I do not recognize the Deore designation but only the Shimano lettering which points to the cheap BR MT520. Is there a reason for this?

I have a 2020 Roscoe 8, it's been a good bike for me. I have only two complaints; no thru-axle which makes for upgrades on wheelsets a pain and the Rockshox Gold 35 RL hasn't been that great (Had internal seal leaks, causing the wiper seal to blow out, SRAM warranteed it. Now having a possible valve sticking sporadically on the air side causing the fork to dive like it has no air, but a couple quick bounces and it firms back up). I was on a budget and bike availability in size large was limited, but regardless I have done a ton of rides in the last 18+ months. Once I get my kids through college, I will be investing in a custom built hardtail.
I love my 2020 Roscoe 7. Perfect for my needs which are pretty mundane - mostly a short commute and grocery-getting accentuated by occasional camping trips and trail riding in a non-mountainous region. I like the new Roscoe and am really excited to see my favorite bike reviewer has landed one. I do hope Trek fills the old niche somehow. A basic chill frame that has nice rack mounts and can still be ordered with decent trail components at a great price had inceredible value even if it isn't a total shredder. 27.5+ tires are so easy to manage yet comfortable and planted. Great for crossing slippy bits like frozen puddles crusted with snow without having to go with studded tires.

regarding the 2 water bottle issue. How hard is it for Trek to design a seat tube with external water bottle thread mounts that don't go inside the seat tube? Surely it can't be that hard?

That looks like a great bike. Not sure about the fork though. How is it?
@@jurisx85 I think it's great. Granted, I've never ridden on a high-end fork, so maybe it's not that great, but I'm very happy with it. I've seen people complain that it's noisy, and it does happen to me from time to time, but 95% of the time it's quiet for me.
From what I read on the MTBR forum, the Giant Crest fork has had recalls due to clicking issues. Also the 55m offset chainring causes the chain to fall off, wear out prematurely. Praxis is giving free replacements to a 52mm offset
Why arent bottle mounts simply external? It isnt difficult to mount 3-4mm nuts outside of the frame tube, allowing for short bolts that wouldnt protrude into the frame hollow.

It seems like they just forgot about the seat tube angle in the redesign haha. So much better than the previous generation though.
We have to standardize a way to make watter bottle mounts not inhibit dropper posts. We keep compromising 2 bottles from drop when there has to be a way to have both.

I could be completely wrong here but I thought that the Roscoe was a 29" by 2.8 not 2.6. Again not entirely sure but just thought I'd point it out. If someone could answer that would be amazing, Thanks!

I'm on a 2020 Roscoe 7. Need a rear thru axle BAD. The QR is the only part of the bike I hate. Well that and the engagement.
I wish Trek would bring manufacturing back to the USA. I miss my old Waterloo, Wi bikes.

@@hardtailparty I would pay more to a certain extent.. The bikes were reasonable back in the day. It wouldn't be to bad if big manufacturers were willing to split the difference but , they would rather pass it all on to the consumer, nowadays. Corporate greed hardly ever goes backwards. That's the problem in every industry. I just hope they have learned from what's happened over the last two years and make things better for the future. My local trek shop had no idea when they could get me a new Roscoe. Sad.

I talked about that in the video. I haven't checked for fit, but I believe they will. However, those that love 27.5+ will more than likely love these 29x2.6. They have a very similar feel, but they're faster rollling.

Trek could have bumped out the mounting lug on the post for the water bottle so that the lugs didn't interfere with the dropper post.

Is 7-9 deg engagement consider as fast engagement? What would be the optimum fast engagement value be?
For reference, and Industry 9 Hydra hub which is about as high end as it gets has a half degree of engagement. I’d say anything around 3-5 degrees is optimal.
I am always surprised by the guy from Arizona not wanting a second water bottle. I am on the Canadian side of the Great Lakes and I drain both bottles on a ride. If I only have one bottle, I need a camelback.
What length dropper do you run? I definitely want a second water bottle, but I want a proper dropper more.
