Matty, I know this video is older, and I’ve watched it already. Just popped up again on my “recommended”. You influenced me to pick up the R9 earlier this year…it is such a great bike…a bit spendy but worth every penny!
I grew up in Colorado, wish I lived there now as an adult cyclist…so many great places to ride!
I think your suspension just needs to be tuned to resolve your issues. It might need more or less air to fit you perfectly.
I love my Trek Roscoe 7 just brought it after watching you ❤ from UK
Trek should put 2,5 tires up front and 2,4 faster rolling tires in the back, that way the bike would be way faster on singletrack.
i am a hardtail nerd myself. lets keep rocking them!
Will give it try…saved it to my trail list.
Really like the video when you have it at the back wheel. I've not seen many others do that.
Definitely as mentioned - check settings on your fork. I'd even call FOX tech support and tell them what you're experiencing. After that - experiment with swapping out your 45mm long stem to a 60mm length to extend your weight bias slightly forward. Combined, this will plant the front end better.
I just picked up the 9 a couple of weeks ago and finally got the fit and suspension dialed in. The fork comes stock with 4 volume spacers which was entirely too much for me since I’m a smaller rider. I watched the video from Kyle & April’s channel regarding how to set up rebound on the fork and it’s working out really really well, I recommend checking that out to help. I also have been considering swapping out the tires because I have the same feeling about the rolling resistance, might try putting higher psi and see how it runs before swapping them out.
Keep up the awesome content!
Congrats on the new ride!
I like how you reply to most of the comments on your videos matt
Thank you I really appreciate it. I’m just happy to have people to reply to.
Just found your channel. Happy to see Colorado trails I have yet to explore. Keep the videos coming.
On my hardtail I always ran around 22-23psi front and 28-30 rear. I’m a little heavier than you are probably but I could tell a big difference in rolling resistance with changes of just 2psi on the climbs. A little more air in the rear tire, especially on a hardtail, helps prevent pinch flats or rim damage too IMO.
I would say try bumping up the rear pressure some on your next ride and see if that helps it not feel like the tires are slowing you down. A few psi more will roll faster and you can adjust it some until you find a happy medium between rolling resistant and grip/comfort.
Been researching this bike for a while and am just about to make the purchase. I'm 56 and come from a road bike racing background, you've helped me make up my mind on this one. Also, great videos, I'm enjoying them immensely.
I'm down in NM, maybe we can get together some time, I'd like to check out some of those trails with someone who knows them.
WOW- Awesome ride/review. The camera mount off the back wheel gave an amazing view, the brush flying by at the end of the video made it feel like you were going 90mph. I WANT THIS BIKE!!!
Love the lower point of view shots! The Red Rocks trail looks Amazing!
Digging the channel, love the chain stay cam. Hope to bump into you someday on the trail!
I recently subscribed to your channel. Great videos! Love your enthusiasm. 👍
Thank you! I really appreciate you watching and subscribing
Nice ride. I just watched a video on setting the rebound on front forks. Might be just what the dr. Ordered for your Roscoe.
You’re probably right! I didn’t mess with the rebound at all. I’ll definitely try that
Great insight into this bike for the long review....the only upgrade I would look into for this bike and the trail specific riding you with this roscoe is clipless peddles 100%. I feel hardtails especially need them for controlling the back end and in rough terrain, unless your endro or DH riding!!
Man, I am new but really enjoying your videos! Your videos about the Marlin 6 helped me decide on my new bike (I got the 5) and I love the trails you have out in CO! Wish I could be out on the trails today but its raining and storming all day. But, at least I can watch this video to help tide me over until tomorrow when the weather clears up, haha.
I’m glad I could help! Thank you for watching the videos I really appreciate it
Have you heard of the PNW Coast dropper? It is the ONLY dropper today with 40mm of air suspension which made it the best upgrade for my hardtail. Check it out. You will wonder why you waited to get one.
Those summer skies and views are making me jealous, dude! Down here in the Southern Pacific it's mid-winter and going for a ride means rain, mud and ice.
Would love to see a vid of you working on the fork rebound if that's what you think it needs! Always cool to see setup and mod vids
You'll get it set up the way you like it. Soft air pressure will make for more rolling resistance, you'll need to experiment on how to set your fork, there are three settings on that...the air pressure in the fork, the top setting for how much resistance you use in it (it looked like you were running it pretty wide open if my perspective was right) and most folks forget about the rebound, which is set on the bottom and regulates how quickly the shock bounces back to its resting point. I really like the new camera angles, production value!
Thank you! Yea i agree I just have to keep adjusting it. I’m trying to give you guys the best content possible!
Killin it Matty! Nice ride! Its 100 plus here in nor cal. I have to get my rides in early.
Same here! It’s a heat wave 🥵
Haven’t picked up my Marlin yet but I’ll definitely be getting a Roscoe
Awesome Bike my friend 😉
Awesome vlog as always. The fork just needs some adjustments done to get it dialed. It’s actually a very good fork. As far as the tires go, I love the XR4s but the 2.6 might be where you’re getting the resistance. I have a 2021 Fuel and I put 2.4s on and they roll quick. Just my opinion.
True, the width probably makes the most difference. I run 2.4’s and it’s not too bad.
I bought a marlin 8 ,I didnt have enough money for a rosco ,but i really like the matlin 8 because its light weight and the 50 tooth sprok helps alot where i live in México City there are lots of realy steep streets olmost like San Francisco
I am running those tires on my Marlin 7, they have tons of grip here in AZ desert terrain. I run 30 psi (tubeless), so she rolls faster and easier. Also, I don’t want to get a pinch flat on rocks or damage the rim.
You can try to adjust the spacers so you can get your stem lower and closer to the headset. Or you can get a flatter handle bar with less rise as well. Both will get your weight over the front tire more so you can do better cornering and get good grip on climbs!
Great content! I have the 2022 Roscoe 8 and love the stock tires. Probably the lower tire pressure causing the rolling resistance. I run 28-30 psi and these roll great for me! Enjoy the new bike! #roscoefam
Great video!
I switch out the psi on my Roscoe 8 depending on the terrain. If it's smooth the psi goes up. I lower it a lot when over rough terrain to make up for the lack of rear suspension. And my Roscoe is running beefy Maxxis Rekons which are 2.8s.
Another great video.
When you said 'I hope the camera isn't too shakey' I thought...hmmm, I wonder if the difference would be visually noticeable in a split screen video with a full-sus and a hardtail.
I'm just looking into MTB'ing and just soaking up any useful information I can grasp right now. So I'm yet to try either type of bike.
Being that I'm in my late 40's, I'm thinking full-squish may be the way to go; despite the low financial risk tolerance.
At the moment, the Polygon T8 seems appealing.
Thanks for sharing your time.
🤝👊✌
That’s actually a great idea about the split screen! Yea I agree with full squish, definitely easier on the body
dope low angle camera view
Hey Matty, re the tyre's, I have the SE4's on my 21 Fuel EX8, and was surprised to hear you find them having a lot of rolling resistance.
I will add though, that in the dry, in the sandy/gravely trails I have near me, they rock, and I SERIOUSLY like mine I have not changed to Maxis as I expected to do when I got the bike!.
In the wet, they are utter pigs of things per my experience. While you state that it rained that day, you didn't look to be getting the tread full of mud, which mine did once in a more sandy/clay place I ride at - then I found them to be rolling death traps of things.
Overall, I'd say that the SE4's are great in dry sandy / dirt trails (hard or loose), but they do have limitations in wet (which might be what you found)
Still waiting for mine, hopefully next month according to the dealer!
With the 65 degree head angle and the short 43 cm chain stay length it keeps your weight more on the rear for a more playful bike. That combination doesn't make it great for steep climbs. That being said it's a great bike but I don't believe any bike can be perfect for everything that's why we have several lol. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy the ride
I just got a chameleon, coming from an old-geometry bike with 70deg. HA. Truthfully, the geometry is perfectly fine for steep climbs. If the hill is so steep that I can't get weight on the front end sitting, it's steep enough that I'd rather be standing anyway- and if I stand on the old bike, it's hard to keep rear-wheel traction.
Love the video! Still waiting on my Roscoe 7 *sigh*
Thank you! Hopefully it comes sooner than later 🤞🏾
Beautiful Ride Matty. I've got one on order that's a year from delivery. Can't wait! This is the first piece of fresh content I've seen on the new Roscoe 9 in a while and I was happy to see it was coming from someone I already follow. I'm 5'9" and I've ordered a medium large. I'm curious how tall you are and how you feel about the M/L size. Super Happy for You! Can't wait to get mine. Thanks for the vids...keep killiln' it!
Wow! You have to wait a year for your bike?
@@LAFooFrmLA I know crazy right? Hopefully it comes sooner? I'll still be on the lookout in the meantime. I can always get my deposit back.
I too had a years wait ordered it last august got it last week , it’s a M/L and I’m 5’10” , only had one ride so far but it was definitely worth the wait , fits perfectly 👌🏻
I usually run 18-22 in the front and 21-25 in the back
Nice bike 😊
Black matches everything
The 9 is the bike I originally wanted/ordered. I got impatient though and went with the fuel ex 5 since it was in stock in my size. I still want this bike but man I do love my fuel ex and have gotten pretty used to the full suspension. Maybe one day I'll get one or trade. Thanks for the video man!
The fuel ex is an awesome bike! If I didn’t have my polygon I wouldn’t probably gone with the fuel ex 5 honestly
Got that 11k very cool. Awesome ride
I really appreciate you guys being here and glad you’ve been here this long. We gotta keep growing!
@@MattyActive see you at a million
Swapping out the Bontrager for maxxis tires makes a hide difference. I’m a huge fan of Assegai front and dissector rear.
Your bike is Amazing!!
I am 1.80 cm tall. What size do you recommend I buy in this model?
I'm loving that chainstay angle, but I keep expecting the GoPro to get clipped by a rock!
Adjust the dampening on your front fork to fix that bouncy feeling
So Sick 😎
My god, the trail and background look so good! Like, so good it almost looks fake. What settings are u using on ur action camera? It's a GoPro right?
Thank you! I use the GoPro hero 8 black. I use 2.4k 60fps
Great video. On the Trek website it is stated that the Shimano Deore BR m6100/6120 brakes are installed. But in every photo or video I see only the cheap mt420 installed. The Deore 6120 brake should actually have the Deore lettering, or not? Can someone explain please? Thanks folks.
Mate, good step up with the video, the ground level cam work from the rear wheel was great. I bet the missed rock pop is tearing you up inside?
Thanks! Yep I really wanted to hit that
My man Matt! Any suggestions for a trail that would be a little technical but not too crazy for my son and I? He’s six. He’s a monster at riding already he admires you’re skill. We are also in Colorado.
Thank you I really appreciate it! I think Betasso preserve would be a great place
Sweet bike. What camera are you using ? It's crazy how stable the image. Makes it look super smooth
I use the GoPro hero 8 black
Amazing footage and awesome bike!!! What is the largest width tires you can run? Are you on 650B or 700? I heard you say 2.6" was the width, I believe. If you don't mind, what is the largest width tire for 700/29" and also 650B/27.5. Appreciate your time. Love your channel. You are one of the few that don't just TALK about MTB...You actually shred!!!
I’m riding 2.6 but I think you could go 2.8 on this bike. Thank you for watching I really appreciate it!
@@MattyActiveThank you for responding! Much appreciated. I thought that the Roscoe went up to 3 inch tires, but maybe that was a few years back.
Do you ride, and recommend any FAT TIRE bikes? I don’t shred like you, but I like off rode riding with my wife, very much. I’m thinking that we could jump MTB for FAT TIRE bikes, for off road…as well as snow and sand. We live in SoCal, so beaches and snowy mountains are close by. I am “assuming” that a FAT bike, like the Farley, would allow for an “ALL TERRAIN” option, allowing us to skip from our Trek Dual Sports, that we LOVE for street and trail…and jump ahead to a FAT BIKE option. Your thoughts?
Check your fork for volume spacers/tokens. I had a new bike that wasn't riding plush on small stuff, ended up having 5 ,10cc spacers in it
So good bro 💪🏾💯 The Trek Roscoe 9 is such a dope bike what are some of the difference you felt between this Roscoe and the 7 you have ? Great review 💯
Thank you! I honestly haven’t ridden my Roscoe 7 since I got my Roscoe 9 so I plan to do a comparison video here soon! I just want to get my Roscoe 7 setup tubeless first before I compare the two
The new roscoe is sick! I wanted one for a bit but picked up a stoic 4 over it.
It's like a hardtail fuel ex
I'm new to mountain biking and picked up the Roscoe 8. I have yet to hit any trails as I'm in dire need of getting in shape before traveling to a trail head. I don't quite understand the differences in the 8 and 9. On another note, I wish I had some riding buddies out here or I hope my next work location is in a more MTB friendly area
If you’re just getting into mountain biking the Roscoe 8 is perfect for sure
I agree about the tires. I got Roscoe 7 of 2022 and im gonna swap em for next summer, maybe 2,4 or 2,5 i dont know. What do you think, what would be your choice? Btw my bike came with eThirteen Lg1 wheels but they are awesome.
I would go with 2.5 if you needed a little bit more efficient climbing but if you can deal with it I’d just keep the stock tires on it until they wear out
I agree with @Toglander. Did you set up the forks to your weight?
I don’t think so actually.
I think all new bikes and tires have a break in period, so the shock and tire performance could get better with every ride.
That’s definitely makes sense
Not really, it's more about having it set up well.
I've settled on 14 psi in the front and around 18 psi in the rear. I'm 160 pounds and ride the southern AZ chunk/dusty/loose-over-hard terrain. While the tires do get a bit bouncy at those pressures on the slower technical stuff here, the traction is much better plus I'm not bombing down trails at Mach 10 either. I still have the stock tires on my 9. In my extremely limited experience, they seem pretty average and have a fairly vague feel to them (particularly in loose, technical terrain when carrying speed), which might also partially account for the "not planted" feel of the front end? I'm curious if anyone else feels the same way with these tires. But, they do seem pretty durable for a lighter weight/casing tire and they feel nice overall. I did remove all the spacers and have my stem slammed (I'm a roadie - habit lol), and that's also helped with position/handling/feel of the bike, as well as cut down my new carbon bar to 750mm and might even go a bit more narrow, but will test on my stock bar first. I have a pair of Continental Argotal/Kryptotal tires ready to go on when I wear the stock tires out, which I think will really expand the capabilities. While the stock tires are draggy (especially at the pressures I run, but I don't care as I'm not exactly racing), if the bike was about 5 pounds lighter it would be a great climber/all around bike....but that would cost wayyyyy more money than the initial price of the bike.
Have you had the fork dialed in for your weight? That loose feeling could possibly be worked out with a good tuning session
I did a little bit but I think I need to spend a little more time dialing it in
@@MattyActive Could you make a video of you doing it please Matty . Thanks.
That would be a walking path hear.. Add 1000's of roots and youd have our blues lol
Haha that’s crazy!
This guy talks like a pro 😄
I follow ur content recentlY , im about your skill Level
Rolling resistance? that's easy, put a fast rolling rear tire, and let that rear tire to move a little. And make sure you adjust the front suspension at your best.
I had to put a 2.4 on the rear of my roscoe 8. I was getting some rub in corners.
I’ll have to stay on the look out for that. Do you know why it was happening?
@@MattyActive there’s really not much clearance back there, and I first noticed it when I was cornering you could hear it. I took in into Broomfield and we noticed it was rubbing on the brake cable as well. They put a zip tie on it and it was much better, but you could still see rub marks on frame. I think the 2.6 tires might be oversized a little.Anyways something to watch for maybe. Have a great day!
Ain’t it just a matter of adjusting the rebound to be a bit softer to get the fork perfekt? Maybe you tried that already, but sometimes it takes a few attemts with different settings to dial it in perfectly.
Yea you’re probably right, I spent a lot of time messing with the air but didn’t adjust the rebound
@@MattyActive That’s it then, i remember my own fox 32 fork used to kick back like a angry mule until i adjusted the rebound. Give it a try.
Hey what would you suggest between the 2022 Roscoe 8 and the 2022 Santa Cruz Chameleon? The Trek has a better fork, brakes, and drive train but I can get the Chameleon for about $300 less than the Roscoe. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I was actually looking at the chameleon also. They are both awesome bikes but I would go with the Roscoe in my opinion. It’s just easier to ride and more nimble
So what do you think it would have been like riding that same trail on your other bikes?
It would’ve been rough for sure and definitely painful in the tech sections. I’ll definitely do comparison videos though! I think the polygon would’ve handled it well since it’s a full suspension and climbs well
When are you coming back up to Trestle?
Hopefully this week!
@@MattyActive Let me know if you need trestle tickets, we have two every day and would love to share with you!
@@robertosmmjlist ok thanks! That sounds awesome. Message me on Instagram at @mattyactive if you wanna ride sometime 🤙🏾
@@MattyActive not on instagram. Nationals this week so some race related closures.
What GoPro are you using Matty?
GoPro hero 8 black
@@MattyActive
Great quality, I'm on it...👍
Do you like it better than the polygon d6?
I do because I enjoy hardtails more in general especially the Roscoes but the polygon is still a lot of fun and I plan to do some pretty cool upgrades to it
What chest mount you running
I use the GoPro chesty
@@MattyActive I would tighten the straps so it’s snug so u don’t have the bobble affect
I like the bike but it’s made out of aluminum at almost 3K. I thought trek had Roscoe 9 made out of carbon?
No I don’t think they do
