    Elliott showed a lot of people how to scream at the top of their lungs while barely making a noise. The kids who connected with that will never forget it.

      @@TeezMcGee yep. Back in ‘03 at 34 years old. Allegedly stabbed himself twice in the chest during an argument with his girlfriend. Dude had a tortured soul but put out beautiful music.

    Elliott’s music speaks to a group of people who’ve never had a voice or the courage to scream out their pains. His quiet singing feels like a friend calmly reassuring you that you aren’t alone.

    Thanks for reacting, man. You're right, his music does make you want to sit back and feel it sometimes. His lyrics were simple but deep and powerful. Very underrated artist, I can't think of a bad song.

    You should do his "Between the Bars" It's similar lyrically to Master of Puppets, but through alcohol personified, rather than drugs.

    Okay dude, I’m really impressed with your reaction catalogue. More Beastie Boys than anyone, Radiohead, Beck, and now Elliott Smith! That’s 4 of my 6 all-time favorites. Elliott is one of the greatest songwriters ever and lost way too young.

      Elliott Smith did art imitating life better than any musician every. He’d take you higher and higher only to have a breakdown. Listen to “Go By” for the perfect example. Notes and his singing get higher with the notes until here’s a complete breakdown.

      Being a longtime addict, this song hits. The first time I heard that line,
      “Leave me alone, you oughta be proud that I’m getting good ‘marks’”
      I had goosebumps all over. Felt like I had the wind knocked from me.

      That’s why I think it was a bad song for him to listen to first. For one it uses 2 string “punk rock” chords and second it’s about heron addiction and not everyone can relate so they won’t know what he’s almond about.

    One of my favourites from this record, I highly recommend either the next song, Christian brothers or good to go. That being said the whole record/discog is s tier.

    I think with a lot of Elliot Smith songs, it speaks to depression which is numb, and is not necessarily the most entertaining content. Also, a lot of people who have not or are not currently experiencing depression don’t want to hear it. It’s not a knock on anyone. It’s just not for everyone.

    You should’ve listened to some of his later work. Yes, this is a beautiful song but uses 2 string punk rock “chords” and doesn’t show his talent. Listen to Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Memory Lane, Go By, In the Lost and Found, Everything means nothing to me. Plus this song is about heroin addiction so not everyone can relate.
