“I think Arsenal have taken away Ramsdale’s character” ⚽ David James | Up Front
I love hearing Simon Jordan interview Simon Jordan
We knew David James for a few years in the 90's when he was at Liverpool.
Lovely bloke, lovely family. We used to go to his house, he'd take us to training, picked us up from school...it's always bugged me the criticism he received because i knew how much he cared and how much it hurt him and he was such a genuinely nice fella he didn't deserve it
Awwww because u met him how sweet
@@matthewdoyle3877 no. Because we knew him for 4 years. Try reading again nobby
picked you up from school? sounds dodgy
He was terrible for liverpool. I was a child and even I knew he shouldn’t be racing out his goal trying to get balls that he had no chance of getting. The most frustrating goalkeeper we’ve ever had
@@4857i Along with Brad Friedel and Sander Westerveld
Never seen David James interviewed before. Very educated and comes across as a pleasant person. Love these interviews. Simon you are are brutally honest with no political correctness which is very refreshing in this day and age. Society needs more of this. People need to grow up and realise there are always winners and losers, not just winners. Very nice job….
Very educated? You do know that he was once declared bankrupt?
There are so many current millionares/billionares who have been bankrupt once in their life, dont think that's an indication of intelligence...
Arsenal hating troll
Doesn't try blame everyone else or say 'is it cos i is black' like every other black player.
@@harrys1505- Even Simon Jordan has been bankrupt at some point. What does it have to do with intelligence? You must be 15yrs old.
What a great speaker James is. I would've liked to hear more from him on his early career at Liverpool, specifically his perceptions of the club at the time and Sourness' management of everything
Yes a wasted opportunity given over to Simon waffling shite
Brilliant interview and really like David James, done a good job for us at west ham
I feel Simon Jordan's questions and interview technique are more about him putting his opinion over rather than drawing out the opinion of the person being interviewed. I appreciate Jordan covering awkward topics but does he need to layer his opinion before the person gives there stance? In doing so the question becomes loaded and therefore may affect the response. Just a touch more listening and less interrupting would give more of an interviewee's perspective.
Exactly! Simon talked way too much in this episode and had to give his own opinion on everything.
You do get that but I also think Simon has he genuine interest in sport and wants to hear others' opinions on his opinions.
Also it's leads to a unique interview. If Simon didn't impose himself the questions would be "what's your greatest moment?"
I must have heard that Simon does not rate Southgate a 1000 times now. Yawn. I wanted to hear what David James view was.
@@HaroldBolton-xs9vd I think we would get a somewhat less Jordan-centric exchange in a scenario where Jordan asks a question, receives a response and then challenges or opines on that response. IMHO it is just the layering of his take before the interviewee has a chance to respond I think may potentially change the response to for example, defensive. As mentioned, I enjoy coverage of difficult subjects and hope that continues but Jordan's interview technique detracts from the final product for me.
Not a terribly bqd thing to be fair
Simon Jordan has smashed it with these interviews straight talking man isn’t scared to voice his opinion right or wrong what’s not to love
David James and Gianluigi Buffon were my favourite footballers growing up. Had all of David’s football dvds, the greatest ever saves, biggest cock ups, loved watching him play.
What a refreshing change from the “normal” footballer/manager.
A solid individual who comes across as a top bloke with his own mind🇬🇧👊🏼
Brilliant as always. David James very underrated, of course had a bad spell as most goalkeepers do but in that era with how vicious the media was he had no chance of recovering to the height of a big club again. Still something to be said about going on to become England no.1 into his 30s after being so low. Fair play.
David James, an intellect, who answers and life to why I'm drawn to "up front". Great again Simon
I wouldn't say he was underrated. He wasn't great, he wasn't bad. And I think that's pretty much how he's perceived.
David James, my idol… used to get down Fratton Park early to watch him warm up, I’ve made it into a decent level of semi pro football and I’ve based my game around him… Thank you for this great interview! 👍🏾
Well done mate, top man, great story. I'm guessing you're around 25 with your career still ahead of you.
Adore Jamo, funny he makes the smoking comment.. I met him in Jurys Inn, in Ireland, on a pre season, one of my very best times.. With me Da, of course. Asked him for an autograph and he was so sound, he rested 20 silk cut blue on my head to do it 😃 My Da made me a framed picture after it, he became our favorite player instantly. Love him so much for being sound that day.. made my dads day seeing me so happy. Wish ya all the best Jamo.
Looking forward to this, David James was one of my hero's as a kid and extremely underrated. Labelled ridiculously for a bad spell and it stuck unfairly
Calamity James! I only remember him being good at Portsmouth
He was not underrated at all. He went to the very top. While making mistakes after mistakes. If anything could be overrated
Had all the attributes but lacked the common sense in decision making to be a true great but still had a great career nonetheless
Is there a better podcast than this genuinely if your a sports fan? Brilliant job from Simon and William Hill.
Yh for a sports fan maybe. But i didnt even bother with the non footballers
Undr the cosh. Less pretentious.
@@kemchy3838 You should watch the interviews with non footballers, the conversations go beyond sport and even if you're not a boxing fan, I think you'd appreciate the conversations Simon has had with Tony Bellew, Johnny Nelson and Carl Froch.
yeah it is great, watched them all but I wish Simon would let them speak, easy half of all them so far is him asking the question, guest tries to answer and then he making another point, asking new question....and thats not even mentioning the ton they cut (upfront really lol) ....but notwithstanding that , I still love Simon but he needs to let them talk....... oh and WATP :)
Top man, David James. The most athletic 'keeper I've ever seen. Great conversation, Simon.
I think Simon is as good as any creator in the sports genre. He's real. Says it as it is. No media trained bs.
He says it how he sees it. Its not necessarily how it is.
He for instance felt Sam Allerdice being called "Big Sam" was the worst thing in the universe, but to a lot of people it was a non-issue.
Elite class goalkeeper on his day. Media criticism of him was always unfair
When he was at pompey i remember my youth team got to a training session with the pompey first team players and david was the nicest most personable player out of every player that was there my first ever Pompey top i bought was a David james keeper top, one of my all time favourite players
Really good conversation. I can't believe I have seen David James being interviewed more often. Loved listening to him.
Loved David James at villa, him and Bosnich were class for us, love to come back as a coach
Sir Simon = Top LAD Proper Clobber 💯 Facts
David James was great interviewer
These are great for also showing the real side to people, instead of the media generated BS we're used to
Always enjoy listening to David James, he clearly thinks in depth and is always very measured in his thinking and has his own points of view. He was unfairly treated by the media and would have had a stronger career had it not been for Liverpools being where they were in the 90s.
Great interview! Love these ❤
Don't get me wrong I love this podcast, but there's something about that cliche interview headraise at 0:48 that is just cringe
Great interview, David came across excellently.
Nice to hear David's own personal perspective on things as opposed the the media's. Top notch interview.
Great interview. Well done gentleman. David for the ordinary ex footballer I have found you particularly and too John Barnes to be very open minded, philosophical and scholarly to a certain degree. Simon well done and please get more people willing to challenge your thoughts as you are very good in seeking the heart of the discussions.
David is a very articulate and interesting speaker , good interview as always.
Sat next to him on a flight recently. He is absolutely massive! I felt like his billed height was under his genuine height. Really pleasant chap. Another good interview by Simon
David James comes across as a very intelligent chap
Another brilliant interview 👍👌🤌
Another very good episode 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great interview.
Really enjoyable interview. Really like David James, well spoken, decent guy, lots of respect for him. As a kid I had the LFC Orange goalie kit wanting to be him. Should be a pundit or on radio as enjoyable to listen to. Also - keep up good work SJ! Love these interviews
Another great interview.
David James gave me his gloves when he played for Watford at Filbert Street (just before he moved to Liverpool)...top bloke.
Great listen/watch as always. SJ is the 🐐
Great technique as a keeper, nice bloke and very intelligent and interesting interview - one of the good guys
The best goalie I've seen playing for Portsmouth
What about Gavin Bazuna?
@@dublinsfaircity He is decent, not as good as Jamo. But Bazuna got time on his side
@@alancochran937 He will be better made too much of a jump!!
This was an amazing conversation, between two well Informed individuals - the interview had a bit of everything! Class!! Showing Pierse Morgan how it is done, it would seem 😅😅😅
That flew by, thanks. I forgot about the "Calamity James" name, it was funny though.
Had the occasion to meet David in a non-sporting environment, and he’s an affable, professional and very bright guy.
Another great interview, seems like a decent bloke if not a little defensive. Look forward to more
As a kid goalkeeper he was my hero when he played for Liverpool
Brilliant again 👏🏼
I support Arsenal and James hates Arsenal but he comes across as an endearing man. God bless.
It's all about Simon, but his show. Not a usual journalist but very insightful podcast. 👏
Wow, what an interesting life David has had. I could listened to David speak for hours.
See james make some of the best saves I have seen and also make the, most horrendous mistakes in the same game. Good interview.
As a Liverpool fan he was our goolie so allways love him, allways a bit of banter with the Dracula nickname
Love this podcast and always been a fan of David James, especially as a neutral. Heard on the Fozcast that Fozzy reckons DJ could still play professionally and I think that just shows how respected he is by other professionals. Even the odd dig at John Barnes, Sol Campbell and Razor David James got a little defensive as he didn't want to comment, remaining committed and to loyal to these team mates, which not being team mates for so long just shows true loyalty and what'll always exist. I started this pod when it first started and loved them, but fell behind. In the last two days I've watched 5 episodes. Johnny Nelson tomorrow and Barry McGuigan and then up-to-date (aside from the odd few who I'm not keen on). I'd really love to see you interview Ricky Hatton, Lennox Lewis, Tyson Fury, Amir Khan, Prince Naseem, Wayne Bridge, Ashley Cole, Neil Warnock and many more. This is a top, top podcast!
And raya got us through the champions league round of 16 think we all owe Arteta an apology he was right about raya and ramsdale
My favourite episode this 1
The joe Hart comment is so true. Over night Pep made you all think Hart was the worst goalkeeper ever. It was definitely a personality I'm the boss clash. Like he did at Barca and Bayern.
he absolutely nailed it about the last world cup winners all being the country pep was coaching in.
enjoyed that,didnt think i would.
Liverpool fan here, always liked david james. He won trophies with us
1 league cup, which others?
The Calamity James title of course
Another great conversation Simon. Could you get Gareth Edwards on ?
He might not remember it, but I scored a goal against David James...1981 St Columba's College (6) v Sir Frederick Osborne (1)....he was around twice the height of everyone else (at aged 11) and had a huge afro...
As an honest interviewer, can you get one of my idols Daley thompson
I'd love Gary Neville on this😂
He wouldn't as he doesn't really enjoy / flourish during confrontation/ debate.
@@HaroldBolton-xs9vdwhat you talking about
I reckon Neville has more money than Simon
@@MrJeffHead errrr ok...
@@markzola8142you seen Gary’s business portfolio? It’s actually massive.
Jamo you Pompey legend 💙
Another great episode, when are you getting Gareth Southgate on?
Gary neville would be ace
@@markzola8142 Southgate, neville, carragher or Anthony Joshua. All people Simon has strong opinions about
David James …. Fantastic
Brice Samba , great keeper and great throwback character :) For some reason we offered him about 4 pounds a week when he won us the play offs. Forttunately we may get Henderson in, another great character, who essentially told man utd to do one :)
Watching this after watching Simon straightening out Aluko 😂😂😂
Will they upload that to CZcams
@@Project5am mate I seen you on the talksport chat and now you’re on here commenting on his own channel. Why you so mad, stop stalking
@@Airyed I think they will but it’ll be cut I reckon
@@Project5amCalm it Eni. SIMON = TOP LAD PROPER CLOBBER!
@Project5am triggered much. Blacks have this negative, depressing attitude about everything. The victim culture, weak race thats needs to bully there way in because they are incapable of doing it on ghere own
I get the criticism of Southgate, but James is also making a good point. Simon Jordan is taking it for granted that making a change inherently is a better choice than not making the change, while David James is saying that we don't know that for sure because it never happened. Jordan lacks the idea of the possibility that changes would make them even worse.
A conversation between two men who have first-names for last-names.
Biggest thing that I take away from this is “I’m not sure if I can use the word fat” . What f ing world are we living in
Don't be fatist, it's physically challenged tank or blob.
What a lovely bloke
Using Arsenal as the headline. WE ARE GARGANTUAN
Simon is bang on about Southgate
James got much better with age. Was quality at Pompey
Sir Phil Brainy = Top LAD Proper Clobber 💯 Facts
As a kid I wore a green bomber jacket. I wasn't NF.
I liked skin head music, the cool jacket and quality Doctor Martin boots.
Is that you Right Said Fred?
Difference being you were probably not hurling racial abuse at black people and foreigners like was common then.
@@NathanIdonga You're wrong. The difference was ..... we weren't black and white. We were people.
I’ve been saying this about the “pep effect” for while. Personally though I don’t think it’s about having a certain amount of Man City players in the England squad . It’s already taken affect by the way he has influenced the English game. It can’t just be a coincidence that where ever pep has managed the national sides have been successful.
Is this a SJ interview or DJ interview?
Start listening Simon, that’s a what a good interviewer does.
Should of expanded more on going from being a hero in the Bolton semi to his dropped catch in the final.
We were awful in the final, the sports psychologist had the wrong impact if anything
From what ive read about this guy he's one of the really good people of football. David I mean . Not saying Simon is bad tho.
Great interview David. Simon is right to criticise Southgate. Unless England hire Pep who's an out & out better candidate than Southgate and available and could just about guarantee a trophy?
Best keeper to play the game.
Always thought David James was a top keeper. Came into the England team after Seaman stepped down and always gave 100%
I remember we was 2 games away from winning title and james dropped a cross cost us 3 points.
Could of been world class media can destroy people
Simon Jordan should have probed him on his comments about Eniola regarding England women's team debacle.
Can I just add, that is a really poor headline grabber, regarding in Ramsdale.
For the love of God! which is it, Playstation, Nintendo or Xbox?? )))
What Kettle is R Simon wearing?
Simon is the Pierce Morgan of football
Always thought David had all the attributes to become one of the great keepers; physical stature, intelligence etc. However he was sadly lacking in the most important one of all for his position, 'Concentration'
I'd find it hard to concentrate if I was getting abused by the media. Media back then was brutal
James comes across really well, should do more punditry.
England tried that in the 80's with mainly Liverpool players. It didn't work. They were crap. Something about playing for England.
Interesting guy.
David made saves that no other keeper could make, but unfortunately veey rarely he would drop a ricket and that's what he's known for
Now that David mentions a sports psychologist and catching crosses, wonder if this was before or after the FA cup final where he dropped a cross for Chelsea to score.
Jordan loves his own voice too much, give your guests time to answer your questions, he like the piers Morgan of sport
Has he seen Ramsdale in the Arsenal goal? Seems not.
Great at bottling the league think he and arsenal will be lucky to get top 6 next season with the pep tribute act as manager
@@matthewsmith8727 Spurs fan?
@@SuperBitsandBob no
Pep tribute act isn't the insult you think it is. He's done a brilliant job by the way
@@VillaBoys123 bottled the top 4 then bottled the league it took him Liverpool and Chelsea to drop off to do something as soon as the pressure got to arsenal they fell apart they’ll be lucky to finish 6th next season
27:30 reminded me of when Alan partridge said 'you pass to him and then score a goal' 😂
Several times Simon uses the argument of using the known to determine the unknown. Firstly, in his disapproval of Gareth Southgate and his decisions not to make changes at certain points in games, and also the idea that the current crop of English players are as good as they are because they have benefitted by player under foreign coaches and with foreign players.
Had a great career but if he lived him to his full potential he'd have been as good as the world's best forget his blinders go back and look at some of his saves they are amazing
Simin has wiped the floor with him
