    I have the 320DN. The build quality isn't the level of say an Aputure 600x. The casing flexes with a large modifier like a Dopchoice 5' Rabbit Rounder. I would not go much larger than a 36" softbox. If they combined the Broad spectrum with bi-color tech of the Nanlite 300b II.... you'd have a near perfect CCT light.

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  Před rokem +1

      I definitely wouldn't put a 5ft octo on this, or the Aputure F10 Fresnel.

    6:52. Most lights with a yoke have that thread on one side. It's to reposition the tie down screw so you don't loose it when you're using a Jr. Stand (instead of Baby stand.)

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  Před rokem +5

      It hasn't got a junior pin though.

      @@gaffergear Oh, from here it looked like the standard combination pin that going over a baby-pin or into a Jr receiver. Like say the 300D.
      I see it now, the way they made that screw thread protrude it wouldn't work in a Jr Receiver, weird. Thanks for the great content!

    Great review Andrew. You’re not wrong about the difference in colour render being obvious. It’s the first time the blueish grey paint of our walls at home have looked their actual colour with an LED light shone onto them. Certain reds and blues do look noticeably better on camera too.
    They’re quite close to the look I get from my DLH400D dedolight HMI heads, which I measured at SSI ranging from 85-94 and TM-30 around 97.

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  Před rokem +3

      Andrew's garage has never looked better !
      joke aside, it really is something different.
      I just had a look at previous reviews of the nanlite forza300ii, 720, SmallRig 220....I don't know about Andrew's camera settings but the colors do look much better with the anglerfish.

    • @nshea3286
      @nshea3286 Před rokem +2

      I would not rely too much on the SSI metric. It weighs every part of the spectrum equally. So light from 380-400nm - which LEDS don't produce - cause a drop in LED SSI scores. LEDS do not produce this part of the spectrum for several good reasons. It would produce harmful UV radiation to do so, Humans can't really see it and most cameras filter out this part of the spectrum with built in UV/IR filters. Comparing the Led spectrum to a Daylight/tungsten spectrum with a UV/IR filter applied would be a better way to do it.

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  Před rokem +1

      @@nshea3286. A lot of digital cameras also can't see some of the spectrum in the SSI tests that the LEDs are not producing anyway.

    • @cagf2013
      @cagf2013 Před rokem +1

      @@nshea3286 I’ve measured with a UV blocking bulb and a less UV-blocking bulb with an HMI. Basically you gain 10 points in SSI going from 85 up to 95 as you start letting more UV in.
      Essentially a score around 85-90 is as high as you’ll get with the UV content 99% blocked out.
      So perhaps we just just need to make a cliff note - an SSI of around 85 for daylight balanced sources should be considered a very high score (assuming just the UV part of the spectrum has been removed)

    Impressive product. Couldn't this be powered by a large portable power station? Jackery or one of it's competitors? As expensive as those power stations are, they're hardly more pricey than a pair of high amperage 200Wh v-mounts that a light like this would require, and the power stations come in 1000Wh and greater capacities.

    Andrew, I’m hoping you can help me out on this-
    I recently picked up a DeSisti 1K tungsten without realizing that it has a threading that won’t fit on my traditional manfrotto light stand with a baby size spigot…
    To my knowledge, since the DeSisti is a bigger light, it has a bigger male pin rather than female … does this make sense???
    I’m hoping to avoid having to buy a new light stand and able to adapt a part to my current set up…
    Sorry I hope this all make sense, this is incredible hard to describe when I do not know the names of these compononents

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  Před rokem +1

      It's not an overly heavy light, so you may get away with changing the spigot to a receiver. Just don't go up high and use in the wind as the stands will bend

    While I keep seeing how this is “ the most accurate light ever” and the various charts all look great, I’ve yet to see anything showing it improving the image. While I’ve been happy with my Aputure lights for video, they seem lacking compared to strobe on my stills camera for skin tones. I’m willing to bite on one of these, just to test it.. but is anyone seeing evidence that these lights actually improve on what the others are doing outside of the sekonic metering?

    • @cagf2013
      @cagf2013 Před rokem +1

      Yes - I use them for beauty work and certain red and blue tones in makeup come out much truer to life / truer to how they look in natural daylight compared to ‘normal’ LEDs. Still subtle, but both myself and makeup artist could see it - particularly in the tone of the lipstick.

My comment didn't mean I'd never use this light. All I said was, it's a great light that looks ugly. Both can be objectively true.
