Remember Billy saying to Colin's gf that he liked that she didn't have any cats... Because rats don't like cats...
GREAT point!
@dutyaccountabilitymedia I'm pretty sure that Frank would see him as a rat or perhaps a canary... Either way, a snitch..
@dutyaccountabilitymedia of course I did and I know.. But that wasn't the point..
What I think is really funny is that you think that Scorsese would have Billy saying that line for just no reason at all. As if anything happens without reason behind it in a Scorsese movie..
2:47 Costello tells the little boy in the beginning that he himself is a paradox
People taking issue with the rat in the end is absolutely ridiculous. There's no mystery to it, the rat was a blatant theme throughout the movie. Every person who watches this movie for the first time is fully aware of the rat theme before seeing the rat on the ledge, so the notion that by showing the rat, the director is revealing the shows rat symbolism if you will, is painfully stupid, because it never had a disguise to begin with, nor was it supposed to be.
Imagine being the director/writer of that movie and you get to the scene where Marky Mark kills Sullivan. What would be your next scene and or how would you end the movie?
It's an insanely difficult movie to end. You don't have any protagonists to check back up on or send off, so the rat on the ledge not only solves that problem, but it's probably the best possible way I could see ending this movie. Not to mention that scene creates the greatest hidden symbolism of the movie with the rat and the golden dome of the state house behind it, which wouldn't work if you just showed the golden dome without the rat and even if you think it would work, without the audience focusing on the rat it would be so blatant what the director was trying to tell us that it would be cringe-worthy.
EXACTLY
The rat was the "smile" at the end.
It's perfect and appreciated.
The movie was an emotional, suspenseful roller coaster.
The " rat" was just a " farewell' to the audience or a " wink" to remind you to relax.
Great Analysis. Especially the ‘X’s
Appreciate it!
I love how this guy just films himself with a hat on and at a different angle to create a sense that 2 people are talking about classic films 😃. Great camera work, and fitting for a flick lover
It takes a ton of editing work but I’m glad someone appreciates it! 🙌
@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ wait you`re just one guy?
@@therealbando twins!
I just noticed that. I listen to the audio and dont watch it mostlylol
😂😂😂
What I got from the rat metaphor was the fact that there will always be more “rats”. Similar to when you cut the head off of a hydra it sprouts two more, so do rats always exist in criminal and legal organizations in many forms.
Great point 👌
Nice analysis! I just watched this movie. Now adding this to my favorites list. One thing I thought was interesting, was the symbolism of Sullivan carrying the grocery bag in the beginning and then similar action at the end of the movie. His life started with Costello and also fell to his demise because of his association with Costello, hence Dignam killing him with the grocery bag in hand. Powerful stuff. Love Scorcese!!
Thanks!! Amazing point!
Guys let's not forget WELL WELL WELL by John lennon when Billy is at Frank's house when he shows em the servered hand. That song was very significant to that scene especially in the convo they are having
9:55 I have to hear these Rollic Stones you talking about ;)
🤝🙏
I see Colin as a tragedy. Colin was taken advantage of by Costello, as Colin lacked a male role model growing up. By Costello acting as this role model for Colin, he could form him into a person anyway he wanted him to be, which would be a man with no morals or values, so he could use him for whatever he wanted. I do think Scorsese was trying to make this another aspect of the film, as he deliberately shown the bag of groceries as a way into this life of crime for Colin, and also his demise. Makes Costello even more of a villain adding this.
Great take
Another key detail that I know nobody's caught is when Billy goes to roof of the building to meet queenan there's a shot overlooking shot of the entire roof and you can see Billy is wearing the outfit that he wears near the end of the movie when Billy's death happens but when the camera zooms back in it shows the outfit Billy is wearing he's really wearing. What the film does here is show us the end of the movie without us even knowing it.
Wow!!
I never even noticed the rat😭 I was so confused why we were lookin at the golden dome
Lol well the golden dome is also there on purpose, it's a symbol of power and status that Sullivan desperately wanted
I think it's even funnier that the rat is digital
Like the analysis guys and I'd like to point out a few things.
First of all that rat at the end if the movie was entirely digital so I found that dude's request pretty ironic.
But most importantly about the metaphor itself, I think it's a symbolism for the class issue brought up in the movie. The difference between rich and poor, the rat obviously representing the lower class and the beacon hill the upper class. It's a subject brought forward on many occasion and in various ways throughout the movie and that las image was the perfect symbolism for that.
Exactly, there's a reason why the rat is running along the balcony with the golden dome of the State House behind it.
Another great use of music was the Rolling Stones Let It Loose in the scene where Costigan first meets Frank.
100%!
I laughed out loud at the rat at the end of the movie
When billy gets killed and Colin gets killed it brings back franks line back from the beginning that ends another full circle “we could become cops or criminals. Today what I’m saying to you is this. When you’re facing a loaded gun… what’s the difference” which is ironic in my opinion for Frank to say cause he’s working both sides both as an informant and a mob boss. When he says this though it really brings that statement to a close at the end when both Colin and billy die there’s no difference they’re both rodents “rat” “mole” what’s the difference.
Excellent point!
I love this “what’s the difference” this parallel works super well with the ray theme too, your a ray for the cops your a rat for the mob but what’s the difference they’re still both lying everyone lies and everyone is a lot more similar than they think

I find it amazing how the film represents such a massive juxtaposition. You really do understand why Madolyn feels more towards Billy than Colin early on.
The metaphors within this film are crazy, such a masterpiece
100%
Two other pieces of music that should be mentioned are first the Sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor which had previously been used in the Howard Hughes film 'Scarface' as well as providing the music for the Three Stooges song "Oh Elaine" in 'Squareheads of The Round Table. I think that it was probably done as a tribute to the 1930s gangster movie, but then again he would have grown up watching the Stooges like I did. 🙂 The second is the music from Patsy Cline's 'Sweet Dreams' in the closing "rat" scene of 'The Departed', and it was also used in the out of town barroom scene in 'Casino' where Ace and Nicky had a meeting.
Excellent points!! 🙌
Could the X on the citizens envelope signify more than Costigan’s death- but rather the eventual death of the entire crew?
Great point
nice video :)
Thanks!
wow guys 👍
🙌
How come no one ever talks about the fact that Sullivan’s girlfriend is pregnant with Costigan’s kid??
There’s a scene earlier in the film where she says to him “you wanna talk about last night?” Clearly referring to ED. Sullivan’s unable to perform in the bedroom. Which is one of the reasons why she ends up cheating on him with Costigan in the first place; she’s sexually frustrated.
Once it’s revealed she’s pregnant, she also discovers Sullivan is the rat (thanks to Costigan) and leaves him, pregnant with Costigan’s child (of which she is likely aware, given Sullivan’s ED issues).
Yeah for sure! We talked about it in our full review!
Jared Leto will never ever be close to Jack Nicholson in his entire life.
This movie is awesome.
🤌🤌
You guys had me at McHale/Bird 86
LFG
The gun Nicholson has when talking to DiCaprio in the scene regarding the rat was actually a real gun that Nicholson bought and so he’s actually pointing a real gun at DiCaprio, not a fake one.
Amazing!
Hey, I don't believe in mandela effect, but, I'm tripping here. I was seriously confident at the idea that Dignam was the ultimate rat for costello all along. Thus, showing that final shot of the rat.
Nahh he was always loyal to the law 👌
If Dignam was a rat for Costello why would he kill Colin? That makes little to no sense
I think the Catholic Church in background was the Costello (Christianity’s) rat and Quinan symbolized Christianity, I say that because Costigan uses Christ the redeemer picture to smack that guy who tells him Costello is a rat, a few scenes later you see the exact same picture in Quinans house and he even points out a picture right beside it. It’s a hidden message about Catholic Church (Vatican) being a rat in our current society in general and I think Costello giving the priest a hard time about messing with kids is Scorsese telling us they have infiltrated a lot of things, I’d imagine he knows some stuff about some stuff but can’t exactly say it.
@@nothing2see315 so that was actually the State House in Boston with the gold dome, it’s the main building of government in Boston
@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ Interesting, I still think MS is trying to tell us something and it could be there’s rat in the state house/government?
Yo I’m so sad you didn’t talk about the song comfortably numb playing. If you remember Costello has a big bowl of cocaine and says to the girls “don’t stop til your numb”. After this point in the movie everyone is numbing out to what’s happening and realizing no man has loyalty to anyone but himself. Leo and Damon both start to question their authority but realize there is little that can be done to stop what is in motion. They are comfortably numb. Let me know what you think

Movies good! It’s a America version, the Chinese version was also good!
The rat is too obvious that why! It’s what a first year film student would place in their movie! The image of the State Capital would be enough, power, money corruption etc.
Sorry I was distracted by the arms in this video

Are you for real! I thought there was 2 separate ppl talking? It’s just one person 😂that’s cool

Dunno about that. It's a fantastic film, but I wouldn't put it above either of those two
