  • Show don't tell is an old writing adage that means you show the reader information, rather than telling them it. The Departed excels at this almost out of necessity because of its pacing and cat-and-mouse-style of storytelling.

      Every so often I get a notification that there's a comment on a video that doesn't get as many views and I get excited. It's even more rare for someone to say something about the channel as a whole. Your encouragement means a lot. Thank you kindly.

    The departed is unreal both as screenwriting AND in editing. Especially in editing. The pace is simply perfect altrough the movie. The first time i saw it I remember i was even disturbed by that. It's a simply wonderful movie. One or two imperfections would have made it one of the best in movie history. That opening, say - just jaw-dripping.

    I don't think Alonzo was lying at any point, right up until they went to the Hillside Trece's house. It is only when they're sitting in the car after Roger is killed that you can hear Alonzo say on the phone ".. make sure the bathtub is clean homey.". Up until that point he had hoped to convince Jake to join his crew. It was only after he realized that Jake couldn't be turned to his (Alonzo's) world view that he realized he had no choice but to kill him. All through the movie up to that point he had been legitimately trying to recruit Jake. He genuinely liked and respected him.

    • @TheGoodChap

      It's super common for that to happen. Fbi informants will be protected by the fbi but the local police will only ever have a hunch as to why they keep getting away and they generally keep their mouth shut. Can't be too naive about intelligence work in any country, this is based on a real story, and whitey Bulger really did get away with authorizing many many murders that the fbi allowed to happen.

      Because the FBI is protecting his identity. If they go around and tell every agency that would kinda defeat the purpose

    It's never show don't tell! It's show AND tell. Both tools compliment each other. That's the way it's always, always been. So sick of this overly used phrase being misused ALL THE TIME!

    Holt shit. I've watched this movie like 6 times and didn't pick up on any of this...I suck. Wtf!? I really don't know as much of movies if I miss these subtle messages

    • @FilmFlux
      @FilmFlux  Před rokem +2

      I feel like, when we don't notice these things in movies, it means the movie did its job well. And also that we're going to spend our whole lives learning more about movies, which is kind of dope.
