- The West Wing believes that America is a country where the way things are initially given to us cannot be the final word about them. That we can never settle for that.

Dulé Hill and Stockard Channing are also integral to the success of the show. Charlie’s back story and subsequent growth as a person and Abby’s total support for her husband as well as her vulnerability whilst medicating him without proper authority. A fantastic show that is TV legend.
The whole cast is excellent. I debated covering other characters like Will and Kate and Charlie, but ultimately decided to shave it down.
@@FilmFlux
Fair dos. Forgot Josh Malina in the main ensemble and recurring characters like John Amos as Admiral Fitzwallace and Timothy Busfield as Danny Concannon. I appreciate you had to draw the line somewhere. It’s a very well produced critique of the best show ever. Well done.
@FilmFlux Thank you. This essay is very well written, delivered and edited. The West Wing is my comfort food. It is my way to escape the political shenanigans of real life and gain a little hope. Sorkin scripts are not always the greatest towards women in general but he has a way of opening up debates and conversations that leads to the possibility of seeing the other side's view. His gun control episodes are a great example of showing both sides. When the world gets to look at someone else's view point, that act opens a passage for harmony.
All that to say, thank you for opening a passage for dialog.
Thank you for this lovely production. It made me cry.
"They say a good man can't be President. I don't believe that."-Leo McGarry
Thank you so much for watching and the lovely quote.
I wish Sorkin would bring back either 'The Newsroom' or 'The West Wing', the former because I would love to see the cast reunited to show us where they would be now and how they would navigate the events of the 2020s. The latter because the original helped give us a vision of what we should expect and rightfully deserve from our politicians.
If the West Wing were to make a comeback, I think it should be about Sam Seaborne as president, he would be the link to the past while his staff would welcome new characters and actors. Sam would not simply be a second Bartlett, but his own man, he would certainly be tempered by wisdom he picked up working in his administration that would inspire him. It would also open the door for cameos from the other actors from time to time, assuming none of them could commit to being a series regular.
I really like the idea of Sam as president. I think that would fit the show well
I didn't watch The West Wing when it was on TV. I knew very little about it but last year when I saw two of the seasons for sale in a used DVD store I took a punt and bought them. By half way through the first episode I was hooked. No TV show has had such an effect on me. Thank you for your thoughtful beautifully scripted piece. Yes, each scene, each character is, as another commentor says, like meeting an old friend.
Thank you for watching and for your lovely comment. It is greatly appreciated.
I'm glad there's someone who appreciates this show as much as I do.
I'm glad you found the video! Thank you so much for watching.
You're not alone!
@@libertyann439 I'm so grateful to see fans find and appreciate this video.

Hands down, the greatest TV show ever made from the writing to the acting everything about the show is phenomenal.
Let’s get married
You're dead right Stewart.
This is beautiful. And it came at the perfect time.
"Hope is not up for debate."
I'm sure there will be things I say in there that people will disagree with, but I hope they don't disagree with just that one sentiment.
sounds like someone in a toxic relationship, sure he will change with no incentive, keep hoping he wont hit you no more
lmao no false hope ^^
The West Wing is one of my favorite television shows. Thank you so very much for this wonderful love letter to it, the people who worked on it, and most of all.... to humanity.
This is the sweetest comment. I'm so glad people appreciate the video. I really tried to make it match the spirit of the show. Thank you so much!
One might argue that “The Newsroom” accomplished similar miraculous things. Of course, Aaron Sorkin wrote that show, too!
I know they wanted the show to be a comedy vehicle for Rob Lowe, but that all changed the moment Martin Sheen walked onto the scene.
Well said.
I held my emotions together until you put Hallelujah in the background. Soaked an entire kitchen towel.
This is spectacular. And I Love You❤🥺
Hope is boundless as long as we remember to help and love one another. Thank you so much for your comment. And I love you too.
thank you for the many things you reminded me of, west wing and hope. my family sat and watched, today i am 76 years old
and sit alone in a disabled home, this show was great and well put together and reminded me of good times past, thank you again
My Father lay alone in a disabled home. But he was never completely alone, because he carried memories like the ones you just shared. And neither are you. I'm glad to remind you of The West Wing, hope, and good times past. Thank you for your comment
This was an absolutely incredible video. I was almost in tears when you talked about the Boston Marathon Bombing, with the music and the national anthem.
Thank you so much. I'm so glad to hear that the video resonates with people.
Damn you. Found this video by accident, watched it all. Now I feel the urge to binge watch the whole series. For the 4th time or something. 😆
Thank you for watching. media.tenor.com/AaTFLMnjqVwAAAAC/westwing-popcorn.gif
I stumbled upon a couple „great speech“ videos and found the west wing and started watching the a week ago, right now i am at season 3 and can barely stop watching.
You're in for some great stuff to come. That enjoyment doesn't go away. czcams.com/video/IEGtX_-Zg1s/video.html
I loved your analysis. Right after the war in Libya, I was writing and editing a thesis in chemistry for a young Libyan who was talking to me about their upcoming elections and what kind of government they would choose. He had allot of questions about democracy. I told him to watch The West Wing. I told him its not who we are, but its who we want to be. Hope.
That's absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with me!
This was a beautiful video. The West Wing is one of my favorite shows, as someone with Multiple Sclerosis, as someone who worked for over a decade in local government, and as someone who has a degree in English literature and enjoyed the writing. Thank you for this introspective review; it was perfectly brilliant and brought tears to my eyes at the end.
At times like these where two people are appreciating each other online, I think the only thing to do is *hug through the internet*
Truly insightful analysis of this incredible show.
What really impressed me was the devotion of the actors working the extreme hours to film this show. They all bought in and delivered excellent performances. Even to the detriment to their health …. RIP John Spencer.
I just finished my 1st Binge watch after watching the original airing. I think I’m going Binge it again.
It’s just that good.
Thanks again. 👍
I've had a lot of people who love the show and re-watch it say they appreciate the video, and that always feels good. Like I didn't let the fans down. So thank you.
Brilliant - thank you so much for this. We watch TWW regularly, like visiting old friends, and you captured so many themes so well. Bravo!
Thank you so much for watching and the kind words. It means a lot!
This video is the archetypal model for what all CZcams essays should be. Brilliant and wonderful. 🙏 Thank you FF.
*takes a bow* You honour me. Thank you kindly.
Speaking as someone who as of February 25th 2022 just finished watching the entirety of the West Wing, I can say to you it absolutely holds up, and it ABSOLUTELY still gives me hope. I have grown and seen a country divided by so many things, but I have also seen the beauty of a country that can come together when you least expect it. When I watch a tv show, the thing I want to see more than anything else aren’t it’s flaws, or it’s commentary, or even it’s stories really. What I want to see is people. Normal people. Just like me. Individuals from so many countless walks of life doing their best. Trying to do what’s right. Trying to help people. In the end that’s all we can do. Choose to help people. To do what’s right.
This is beautiful.
From a man with tears rolling down his face because of your ending... From an American... Thank you. And I love you too.
I really appreciate you watching. And I really appreciate you imgur.com/to6A6r4
I think we’ve all been cruelly robbed by the sad death of John Spencer.
I don’t think anyone expects Leo to be there favourite character, but he was mine.
That seen in “Bartlett for America” when he’s describing trying to resist 60 year old scotch, and then you see his hand shaking when he gives in and takes a sip.
I wasn’t prepared for that scene.
I must say that your analysis of my favorite show ever is something of a masterpiece. You encapsulated all of what the show meant to me and so many others, not only in an hour and 14 minute video. But in just the last line, no matter how bad things may look today, there is always tomorrows. Well done sir, well done.
Much love. I really appreciate your comments. Thank so much for watching.
Love the touch of ending the video with a reference to the title of the finale.
I am glad someone caught it and appreciated it. Thank you :)
The writing and acting is some of the best of all time. Fantastic show.
The algorithm provided me with something I really enjoyed watching for a change. The theme music of the show alone conveys hope, and I can't help feel it in my bones when I hear it.
I'm glad you enjoyed. Thank you so much for watching. (and thank you, CZcams algorithm)
The use of FF and KH music in this video about The West Wing is like my two worlds colliding and I was not ready for it lmao
And now Zelda...this is wild

“Two Cathedrals “ is still one of the best episodes of television, period. I mean who else would unleash a untranslated rant against god in Latin to be on non cable TV?
My next favorite is “the streets of heaven is too crowded with angels tonight”. It is just….. ooof.
Haec credam a deo pio!
I stumbled upon this video out of nowhere. And I should be going to bed right now, but there's half an hour left and I REFUSE to pause it till tomorrow. Very, very, VERY well done, sir. As a Canadian who came to love The West Wing (despite knowing very little about politics Canadian/American or otherwise) after watching The Newsroom, and who watched TWW on both Trump's election night (to ignore what was happening south of my border) and Biden's (praying that Trump's election night wouldn't be repeated)... thank you. This is beautiful, front to back.
Also as a PS: I'll get you to those 10k views myself, given enough time. I would love to see your take on The Newsroom.
As crazy as this might sound, I forgot how much I put into this video. Your comment (and your hilarious context of refusing to go to bed) really struck me. I took a little walkthrough which reminded me about the video process and making it, and how I felt about the show. I hope that last half hour didn't disappoint and gave you the kind of comfort the show did.
Thanks for your wonderful comment. You've planted a Newsroom seed with it. I do love me some Newsroom.
The West Wing is my favorite show of all time. We need The West Wing back.
What did you think of the reunion?
Erm, excuse me - that entire character analysis portion was so on point i can't even-
(especially that part about Toby, i really didnt need to be called out like that lol)
fantastic job

Thank you so much for watching.
And Oh my!
The music. So many episodes enhanced by the music that makes you just cry.
You could just do a video of just those.
I rewatch them again & again.

Agreed. But, one time, on an older channel I talked about my favourite movie music and those never got stopped getting copyright claimed. So unfortunately I can't really do that.

Perhaps just a review of those classics.
With short clips allowed. I thought you could get away with
@@captaincrazypants10 That's exactly what I did. Actually < 8 seconds is safest. But sometimes that's not enough depending on the song, and there are manual claims you have to worry about as well. One day soon, NBC will come for this video because it's over 75K views now. Warner Bros just put a manual claim on my Training Day video, and even though I won that one, one day they'll be back. Enjoy while you can :)
*the War in Vietnam. Leo fought in and survived being shot down during the Vietnam war, not Korea!
Sorry it was bugging me! This is a fantastic review and retrospective examination of the characters and show and a whole! Thank you for making it!
Thank you! I've received this comment about Leo being in the Vitenam war a few times. Looking at the episode synopsis I'm guessing I wrote down Korea because the present day story involved a spy plane crashing in Korea. But you can't make mistakes like that on the internet. That's a whoopsie daisy.
Amazing work. This was a joy to watch.
I truly appreciate it. Thank you kindly.
Absolutely beautiful video - Thanks for putting this together and great job
I really appreciate that. Thank you so much.
Thank you for making this. Beautifully done!
Thank you so much for watching!
Sometimes the influence of art, drama, media, a word from a friend can lock in an ideal, for me Sorkin set a standard of GOOD for myself and others. As I view the US today I weep in fear of the lack of those kindnesses or good ideals. I respect the thoughtful analysis.
Thank you kindly.
Thank-you for this video. I loved the West Wing. Such an amazing show. The upbeat drums and the soaring strings of the opening was a perfect song to set the mood of the show. I still want to believe that we can still rise to the “better angels of our nature”, as Lincoln wrote. Thank-you for reminding of that.
Thank you so much for your comment. I also really appreciate your Lincoln quote, and definitely agree with your sentiment.
Thank you neighbor to the North. (I'm in Ohio). Thank you for understanding America so well. We needed this work" when it happened to get us through the last few years. Yes, I too worry if we will still be here.

Thank you so much for the kind words.
I know this is an older video but I just wanted to say that this is a great video. Very well written and edited. Great job.
Thank you so much for the comment. It's probably my best video so I am happy when it gets some love
Toby was always my favorite. Then Charlie. The man in a hole anecdote was by far my favorite scene in the whole show
The man in the hole anecdote really encapsulates what I think makes the show so lovable.

The campaign absolutely saves the later two seasons, but season 5 was rough.
I had only seen up to season 4 for the longest time, and then I finally saw 5 and I was like, "is this a joke?"
@@FilmFlux Yeah, on each rewatch I typically skip S5. I know what happens, I don’t need to subject myself to watching the writers try to figure out how to work without Sorkin.
The show was incredible. This production is very high quality and does him full honor !
That made me cry too. Especially right now
Your emotion honours me. Thank you for watching.
Thank you for presenting an epilogue, if you will, for one of the best shows I have seen. I am going to start watching from the begining for the 3rd time.
Thank you for watching my epilogue. I like that comparison. Imagine The West Wing being a book, and my video was on the last page. "Yo, this is an hour, I don't got time for that!"
Absolutely brilliant video! As a crazy TWW nut, this is by far the best video analysis on TWW I have seen online. And believe me, I have seen nearly all of them! I would love to know if someone could point out the source of the animated video used to illustrate the man by the river story. Keep up the good work! You just earned a subscriber!
Such kind words, thank you very much! Both are from Miyazaki films. One is Laputa: Castle in the Sky www.imdb.com/title/tt0092067/ and the other is Ponyo www.imdb.com/title/tt0876563/
Basically if the clip has water in it, it's Ponyo, if it doesn't, it Laputa.
Oh boy, here I go watching the West Wing again...again.
Me too! MRS LANDINGHAM!
21:30 Leo didn't survive the Korean war, he survived the Vietnam war.
I'm really torn. For the most part this was very well done. Your take on Josh seemed superficial at best - you touch on it later, but more than anything he is the heart because he's got the strongest bond with nearly every other character. (Even Mrs. Landingham kinda dotes on him) It's no surprise that the last two seasons are really about Josh and CJ. His arrogance is more performative than real - everything is about his devotion to the job, not himself. His whole life was dedicated to learning how to do what he was doing, and even in the Pilot, on the verge of being fired, he's still doing it, more focused on the plight of the Cuban refugees than his own job. And the point of the "TellaDonnas", back when, as you point out, we didn't have a lot of media talking about this, was that it afforded a chance to explain this to the audience while letting Sorkin explore the natural chemistry between Janel and Brad every episode. We find out that Donna was a college dropout with five majors, so her ignorance makes sense, and as she grows in the job, she stops being used for this purpose. (And remember she "wins" several of those TellaDonnas...)
I can definitely see your points about Josh. I think it would be particularly interesting to see him as the heart of the show. Looking at the series as a whole Josh being the heart would be a good case ... especially because Sam isn't there. I picked Sam because he more matched the intended spirit of the show in seasons 1-4. As for the superficial look at Josh, I actually wrote that in the spirit of making a fun jab at Josh that I thought West Wing fans would understand. Like a, "*chuckle*, yea he can be a petulant child." I guess I was mistaken. Sorry.
Well done young man, Thank you I really enjoyed watching this. Take care of yourself.
Thank you so much for the kind words.
Fabulous work, thank you.
Thanks so much!
I never watched The West Wing until a clip ended up on my CZcams feed. It was the one about the last person standing during the State Of The Union Address. I was hooked, & I watched everything I could find on CZcams. The West Wing & House Of Cards definitely gave us a glimpse of what it really takes to run the USA government. It's not an easy, breezy, cushy job. It takes some very dedicated people to work together AND also challenge each other to 'do better' in order to achieve the greater good, for as many people as possible. No matter what comes our way as individuals, we must never forget... Together, Anything Is Possible.
Thank you for your commentary. I really enjoyed it.
Thank you so much for your comment and appreciation.
whaat u said about boston after the marathon bombing reminds me of chattanooga after the shooting that happened here in 2015. I think i'll never forget that because I wasn't that far from the recruiting offices when it occurred at a job interview that wound up being the longest interview I ever had I was there for 3 hours
Did you get the job?

The best summary of my favorite TV show 🥲
Thank you very much for watching
Season 5 was painful. I enjoyed Season 6 and 7. I would have watched President Santos. Reminded me of Obama.
Thank you for your best wishes. dark days in our Nation. The threat to our democracy, our constitution. Scary.
Glad to hear my wishes got somewhere. And I would watch Jimmy Smits do pretty much anything.
I never saw The West Wing when it was on TV, but I found it at the Library. I cannot imagine waiting for the next weeks’ 1:14:34 show.

Why thank you.
It's obvious that you put so much work into this video. Thank you! We in America still have hope and determination.
It's nice to have the work recognized. I appreciate you!
I’m from 🇬🇧 and TWW introduced me to the American political system and it’s government. I loved the romantic ideals, the speeches and most importantly the acting. Aaron sorkin is an amazing genius and I thank him from the bottom of my heart for this show.
Well done. Thank you.
Thank you kindly.
Awesome use of Final Fantasy scores.
I always appreciate when someone appreciates my music selection. Respect.
I love how smart this show is
The West Wing was, most of all, a show about a close, somewhat dysfunctional family dealing with unbelievable adversity. They just happen to be dealing with it in the White House.
Thank you for this full hearted story. I'm not even American, but West Wing made me understand something I already knew deep inside. USA is not just a country. It is an idea. This is why so many people around the world were touched so deeply by 9/11 atacks, like it was their own capital. Yes, US leads reckles campaigns, cynical policy and by no means is a perfect superpower. But there is something about what you've said, this constant quest to do better. A lot of these ideals echo in Aaron's Newsroom as well. We should never give up on that.
Well said. Apparently I made a deal with someone that if this video got 10K views, I would make a Newsroom video. I guess I have to deliver.
This show is most definitely not one based solely on Liberal ideologies. When it comes to most of the best moments of this show, you could easily swap Liberals with Conservatives, and the scenes would still work just as well as before. It is about people and relationships, with some politics sprinkled in. OK, maybe a little more than sprinkled. But the show isn't dependent on the politics.
That was basically my thesis for the show and I'm really glad to hear that is yours as well.
Thanks for this, really well made video. I'd been debating lately if I should watch the West Wing and this decided it for me. I watched some amount of it back when Bush was president and i was in my twenties, and i remember how it affected me, and now in my thirties I'd been worried it would really bum me out compared to reality. But after watching this, i'm reminded of how that fantasy can make you feel, and how you pull that feeling out and try and apply it to the real world, and i think i could use a bit of that right now. Keep up that great work.
This is a very kind comment, and very meaningful because it tells me my overall idea translated well. Thank you so much for watching, and thank you for the comment.
1:12:07 love you too, dude. thanks for checking in. times are always cynical... but we'll figure it out.

Noël is my favourite episode. It was where I fell in love with the show.
If you're gonna fall in love, that's a great place to start. It's a special one.
Wonderful analysis in the best series ever made for television!
That is very kind. I really appreciate it. Thank you for watching!
I think a lot of the darkness the show goes onto inhabit isn't just because the showrunner changed hands, but also the political environment of the day.
When The West Wing started, we were in the tail end of the Clinton administration, relative economic prosperity, and crucially pre 9/11 - an event that changed the way television was written wholesale. The show even hits on the point that it just isn't the same world anymore, and the writing in the show reflects that.
That isn't to say those final seasons don't still have hope at their core - the entire Matt Santos character is almost too characteristic of everything The West Wing stands for - but it is written in a way that reflects the slightly less idyllic world we lived in. Those last seasons have a lot of issues, but I think they would hold less value without that shift in writing.
I think you're probably right. I wanna go back in time so you can tell me earlier. Perhaps not the best use of time travel, but I'm down :)
Nah no worries, I probably wouldn't have thought of it without listening to your analysis.
Sorkin's poetic writing style may be why I fell in love with the show, but the years have made me appreciate 5-7 bringing it back down to prose.
As John Wells himself once said, 5-7 felt like a tribute band - sometimes a good one, sometimes missing the mark. That feels like a fair analysis.
@@LabradorIndependent I like John Wells. That's a good summation.
Thanks to the West Wing Weekly Facebook crowd for steering me to this video. Seventy-five minutes of pure bliss.
Wish you would provide more content.
This was wonderful.
Best Wishes to you.
Thanks

The deep dive like you did here.
It was fascinating.
I have no specific show in mind …. Maybe I’ll just watch this one again.
👍🥳
@@captaincrazypants10 If the topic doesn't matter, these are shorter deep dives. They aren't shows, and they aren't an hour long, but some of them, at least, provide a similar amount of research time (two months) that have simply been condensed into singular thesis, rather than a sprawling wander. For pretty much all of my videos, by the way, I try to provide a premise for the topic I'm discussing so that any fan of my work can appreciate them if they like my work. Like, "I don't know what Zelda is, or Smash Bros." Don't worry, I tell you:

Thanks. I’ll check them out.
Two months? Wow.
Ok … I got one …. Deep Dive Battlestar Galactica.
That’s gonna be a tough one. So many layers.
In this 2023 world of AI infancy …. Sorta scares me …. But I’ll be long gone if it happens.
Thanks
@@captaincrazypants10UUUUUUGGGGHHH that idea sounds painful and awful and wonderful and I'm writing it on my potential topics list. SO SAY WE ALL. czcams.com/video/mkiZxtzy55k/video.html
Thanks!
This show is so good even shows about the show make me cry.
Also, good on ya for choosing TLOU to score your breakdown of Bartlet :)
Thank you for commenting on the music. I love when people do that. To be honest I was originally going to pick this: czcams.com/video/TbV3qwORBo0/video.html
But I was worried because it was by Hans Zimmer it might get copyright claimed.
Easily some of the best television ever. Yes, fictional, yes almist naively optimistic, but the essence of humanity. Between this and the British version of 'House of Cards' are simply why television can be so era defining.
Sir, this is the best video CZcams has ever suggested to me. 👏
That is high praise indeed. Thank you so much!
This surely needs more views and likes
Please do a video on THE NEWSROOM as well
Why thank you :) If it gets to 10k views, I will strongly consider it.
@@FilmFluxYes the R-rated “Sequel” to The West Wing!
@@aymarafan7669I know it's been two years, but keep your eye out. I will do it.
Thank You!
