Let's be cautious. between Star Trek TNG and the dystopian Discovery. there is a common thread. Excessive Utopia sabotaged of course by bad non human people, and Discovery paranoid vengeful explanations, of who is responsible for the disasters..... Metaphors.... transfer. please. Lincoln, Eisenhower, Washington, Reagan. Ulysses s Grant. Theodore Roosevelt. Were not evil, they managed as they could , very troubled times... And they were not Democrats. I loved this series, but the good and mean or evil part of it is really not fair often and counterproductive and sometimes dangerous.

Although I agree with you about the occasional misogyny, the scene with Ainsley in her party getup in the episode "Night Five" was the exact opposite. I liked how Ainsley stood up for herself and explained what she called "her kind of feminism", and that she didn't mind Sam's teasing remark. The dialogue with the temp (portrayed by Alanna Ubach) is one of my favorites. I consider myself a feminist and I'm totally with Ainsley on this one. Also, C.J is one of the best (and toughest) female characters ever written. But of course you're right, there's still more than enough misogyny in the show. Lord Marbury's comment on Abby's breast's makes me cringe every time, and true, Donna is a caricature of a dumb blonde at times.

I'm a writer, in no small part due to the influence of The West Wing. I have an index card pinned to a cork board above my writing desk, and in big red letters it reads MAKE THEM CARE. No matter the plot, the amazing action, the stunning adventure... it always comes down to making the audience care. You're absolutely right in your assessment that caring about these characters is the major draw of The West Wing. My Mother, who wouldn't watch anything political if you paid her, loves the show. When I asked her why, she said, 'Because I just love watching these characters. I love their personalities and their humanity.' That's it in a nutshell.

Sadly modern politics have retroactively ruined West Wing for me. In this show, everyone from both sides of the political fence are shown to be competent capable people who ultimately want to do what's best for the people they represent and for the good of the country...............YEAH that's reading as pure fiction in today's day and age. My only gripe with West Wing is that often it felt like on a individual episode basis the show was REALLY good but I felt it couldn't do the same thing with the serialized plot lines. Most of the stuff they tried to set up in one episode ended up being forgotten or petered out to nothing

Absolutely loved this breakdown of both the qualities and characters of this show. Regarding the discussion of misogyny and the treatment of women in the show, particularly relevant was the no audio scene from the episode "A Proportional Response" showing Josh and C.J. mixing it up in her office. Keep in mind that while Josh admits to going "way too far" for calling her a "paranoid, Berkeley, shicksa feminista", she maintains her composure, winds up her Popeye arm, and just to show her dick's bigger than his, comes back with her retort right where it hits him the most, calling him an "elitist, Harvard fascist, missed the dean's list two semesters in a row Yankee jackass"--making certain to Neo bullet time side-step the obvious anti-Semitic opening that he left her, neatly putting him in his place while he licks his ego in patronizing her for "finally getting that off her chest". Sure Sorkin had nothing to do with elevating her to Chief of Staff eventually upon John Spencer's death, but damn did he set the table for her character--who else amongst the staffers would be credible in that role? And we had countless other strong female characters--Jordon Kendall, Ainsley Hayes, Mrs. Landingham, even the iron-willed Deborah Fiderer, and of course, the First Lady Abigail Bartlett, plus communications' staff Ginger and Cathy who took no shit from Toby but were highly competent and organized while others were emotional and disorganized. Sure, Donna's character was used largely as an expository dialogue device and foil for Josh's rants. Yet the banter between the naive "Minnesota girl goes to Washington" and the intellectual political operative snob did as much to inform the audience in reminiscent of Point/Counterpoint exchanges as it did to check Josh's ego. It was also a journey displaying the growth of her character. By the time of the Santos campaign, Josh Lyman has made little change, still making knee jerk, politically immature audibles while Donna shows how she's become the one with vision and composure, and yet still caring for him despite his flaws. If the West Wing is derogatory towards women, it is only as an intentional mirror held up to our societal attitudes towards women then--and today.

Sometimes the influence of art, drama, media, a word from a friend can lock in an ideal, for me Sorkin set a standard of GOOD for myself and others. As I view the US today I weep in fear of the lack of those kindnesses or good ideals. I respect the thoughtful analysis.

The Core is fascinating to me for multiple reasons. I can't watch disaster movies because it makes my pessimistic ass's anxiety go through the roof; the core makes me laugh every time. I know its bad, but I also know I enjoy it so much lol

I have a love-hate relationship with the WW. The acting was always incredible, but Sorkin was hit or miss, and I'm sure he would agree and wish he had some do-overs. He was good more often than not, but when he was bad... it was really bad; however, the actors' incredible synergy made most people not realize it. Like a team of world-class magicians pulling off incredible misdirection on stage with their craft. Sorkin, in his over-preachiness got quite a few things wrong, supposed facts to make the characters be perceived as super-smart, but... sorry Toby... it's not the 3rd Commandment either, (Pilot episode) it's the 5th, and it's the Observer Effect C.J. ("Access") not the Heisenberg Effect, as well as many other incorrect facts. "Noel" will always be my personal favorite, and IMO, hits way harder than the outstanding gut-punch "Two Cathedrals". And seasons 5-7 are actually good, but compared to seasons 1-4, are just a step or 2 behind and are judged too harshly. If you want a better show in the same genre "Yes, Minister" and with Hacker's promotion "Yes, Prime Minister" is a better show!

Easily some of the best television ever. Yes, fictional, yes almist naively optimistic, but the essence of humanity. Between this and the British version of 'House of Cards' are simply why television can be so era defining.

This show not being about magic is the biggest joke ever. 15-18 minutes out of every 25 minute episode revolves around the cards. Yes romance and other themes are present throughout but at its core it is very much about the magical mcgoffin.

Amazing work. This was a joy to watch.

This is some of Denzel’s best acting, and that’s saying something given his rare talent as an actor. Denzel creates a terrifying, but powerful and charismatic character.

The movie definitely have two sides to the story from Alonzo either he was finna change Jake into one of his trusted corrupt cop squad by doing the things he was doing and seeing if he was completely down for it even going past morals or everything he had him do was also a double edge sword if he didn’t follow in line like the rest did everything was essentially a way to get Hoyt caught up and used for evidence against him especially that last part about the killing. It as he said “ it’s not what you know it’s what you can prove” and everything was really stacked against Hoyt from the first few minutes with Alonzo. It’s like everything was already planned out a way to escape his own problem

Its a great movie. One I think every American need to see, because it shows the contrast between two of the main American Dreams, and what the US has to a degree tried to sell to the world as being the way to live. Now both dreams are a lie outwardly, one is a lie inwardly too....but the other is actually real inwardly, and touches on the deeper essence of what life is supposed to be about. Not a nihilistic nothingness living as a accident of nature or "survival of the fittest", but a deeper consciousness which shows that the REAL goes beyond the physical needs, survival, and a pre-determined reality we have no control over or choice in. For those who understand it, its proof that free-will and choice is real, and that we all consist of more than our physical make-up and what we can be taught by parents and society. It shows you the absurdity of seeing materialism as the only reality. Yes to see all of that requires a heart, which most people perhaps especially in the US seem to have lost. But I challenge everyone to study and find out which one of the two realities is more real, and which one of them is more fulfilling, purposeful and desirable. This movie hits home with me....as I have 2 or 3 times in my life been faces with the choice presented in this movie. The first time I chose family, the second time I chose career and the third time I chose family again. But it is in choosing the truth as my greatest value that it has been clear to me which of the two realities is better and why. You might look at Hollywood and Billionaires and watch how most there try to have it all, but most fail at especially the family life as they try to have a very demanding career. With a world where family life is under attack and it is really tough to find anyone who would choose the family life and so is even worth banking on for such a choice, it should be clear to see what we are loosing and that this loss is NOT evolution.

I just watched this last week and for me they are better off single. Glad we are now in 2024 where we don't pushed everyone to get married. The qualify of life is now a goal be it single or double.

I wish Sorkin would bring back either 'The Newsroom' or 'The West Wing', the former because I would love to see the cast reunited to show us where they would be now and how they would navigate the events of the 2020s. The latter because the original helped give us a vision of what we should expect and rightfully deserve from our politicians. If the West Wing were to make a comeback, I think it should be about Sam Seaborne as president, he would be the link to the past while his staff would welcome new characters and actors. Sam would not simply be a second Bartlett, but his own man, he would certainly be tempered by wisdom he picked up working in his administration that would inspire him. It would also open the door for cameos from the other actors from time to time, assuming none of them could commit to being a series regular.
