    Oh my goodness
    I agree
    I love Toby
And writers did him dirty at the end
Like you said, Toby respected the President he would never leak information, he would fight, argue, convince the president to do something, but not back stab him.
Even Richard Schiff didn't like this plot line and thought it wasn't a right track.
The writers seriously didn't know what to do with him.
He was just hanging there at the end.
Like seriously they couldn't find a better plot then a disgraced White House employee
They shouldn't have made him struggle so much in last season, it wasn't his rookie year in WH, he was a veteran in his 8th year.
A big project or legislation or something that he gets done, even if it makes Leo or Josh unhappy and messes the Santos Campaign, he should've done that.
Because he was there to cement Bartlett's legacy not the party's.

I haven’t gotten through the entire video yet but wanted to say one of my favorite scenes is from S1 Ep5 when Josh talks to CJ about the guilt of knowing he has a disaster escape card, with the Ave Maria playing (as his survivors guilt traces back to childhood with his sister). Just a great scene.
Favorite episodes are In the Shadow of Two Gunmen and Two Cathedrals. I haven’t watch in a long time and may be due for a rewatch.

Obviously he is not over 50 years old and did not grow up with M*A*S*H reruns aired several times a night on one of the 6 or 7 channels available on TV. Many viewers of TWW might be too young to know that more than half of the main characters were famous, well-known actors prior to doing TWW.

@@CollectiveWesternerI’m forty-four (as of this typing) and I grew up with “M*A*S*H” in first-run on CBS and later in syndication (ironically on the CBS affiliate in my hometown). I must admit, however, that the videodiscs spoiled me because they have the full episodes and such episodes as “Welcome to Korea”, “Fade Out, Fade In” and “That’s Showbiz” are restored to their original one-hour format. For such as I, that means something is lost when I watch the series in syndication nowadays. Even so, I have long said that “M*A*S*H” and “The West Wing” are two of the three best (along with “All in the Family”/“Archie Bunker’s Place”) television series I have ever watched. And the first two are linked by Alan Alda, who in both cases, demonstrates his ability to balance humor and seriousness.

When the show started, I was thrilled. I watched with my Mom and Dad. After the first episode, I knew it would be a massive hit. Massive. My baby sister and I would watch it then call each other to talk about it. Talk About It. Rather than making politics boring, which it can be, it was made clearer and easier to understand how government really works. This will always be my favorite show. Josh is my favorite character. He is the best character I will on the show.

I consider the West Wing to be the best series of all time. The characters, the dialogue, the shooting of scenes, were amazing. The walk & talk scenes must have been difficult at times. The dramatic scenes could be very intense, while the comedic scenes were very funny. The characters were complex. You knew these characters were good people, but they all had their flaws. Aaron Sorkin was amazing in bringing these actors together and giving them the ability to take us into this secret world of political life.

Richard Schiff had on several occasions said the same thing, that Toby would NEVER have leaked information. He did it, as that's the way they went, but he never liked that storyline. There are a few episodes of a podcast called The West Wing Weekly later on when he talks about that a little bit. It's a great podcast, they go through the entire series episode by episode, it's hosted by Hirshikesh Hirway and Josh Malina, and they get most of the cast, as well as Aaron, to talk about various episodes at times. Should look into it.
Yea, the intro for President Bartlett is amazing. It epitomizes the character so perfectly, that whole scene is excellent.

    • @thomash.schwed3662
      @thomash.schwed3662 Před 3 dny

For me, the best part of that introduction is his actual entrance. We still don’t see him at first. But, the discussion of the listing of the commandments is spot-on as we hear that distinctive voice calling out: “I am the Lord thy God.” Even as a nonbeliever myself, Sheen’s delivery is at once striking and disarming.
This is particularly so against the backdrop of the comment Josh had made to Mary during “Capital Beat” (which comment nearly got him fired and was the set-up to the meeting in the first place): “Lady, the God you pray to is too busy being indicted for tax fraud.” Incidentally, many’s the time I’ve wished I could use that type of line to any one of the Theocrats in the beet-red town in which I currently live. (Then again, I’m not the White House deputy chief of staff; so, I could probably have a bit more leeway in saying it.)
Given President Bartlet’s background, one could easily expect him to kowtow to the demands that Josh be fired. Yet, he recognizes that we live in a pluralistic society in which religion is not to be established. What’s more, he also recognizes that Josh’s comment, though made in the heat of a television segment, is nonetheless true. So, he navigates the situation with that signature Sheen-Bartlett gravitas. First, he does so in querying the religious bigots regarding the finer points of holy writ, including mentioning the interview with his granddaughter. Second, he does so in the Oval Office by reminding Josh, in that knowing way of his, to not let it happen again.
These are simply some of the things I got from that scene. I realize that not everyone may agree. But, that’s one of the best things about series such as this: Each viewer will have his or her own interpretation and reasons for it.

Liked the video, but Joshua should've listened to some of the commentary from the DVDs and watched other videos commenting of the actors and producers. He got part right about Sam. The show originally was suppose to be about the WH staff and Sam was suppose to be the star. But after Martin Sheen appeared as president the test audience loved him and so they switched focus. (That is the reason why he shows up at the end of the first show). This led to Rob Lowe having lots of arguments with Sorkin about having his role reduced to which Sorkin responded by writing him out of the show. The Network didn't like this and the ordered Sorkin to change it which he refused which is why Sorkin got cut from the show. After that, however, the new writers didn't know how to resurrect his character so he left.
Sorkin freely admits that he's a perfectionist and is really difficult to work with. Numerous interviews with the actors comment on this, but they all realize that Sorkin the perfectionist made the show so great. But he's also said that he can't do TV shows because he has too little time to write a show so he's going to focus only on movies from now on.
Joshua seemed also to have missed the point that Toby didn't leak the information about the space shuttle. It was his wife who leaked it and Toby was taking the fall for her. The actor didn't like that story line also, BTW.
Lastly, Joshua didn't address Leo (John Spencer) died in real life during the last season. I thought the show did a very good job of putting his funeral in the show. I think John would have liked that and we as the audience also got a funeral for our beloved actor and could say good-bye. But back to the commentary from the DVDs, in the episode where John won his Emmy John literally breaks down crying because he's so thankful. Also, the producers continued to pay his wife his salary even after he had died.

Foe Santos and Bartlett to win the Presidency, their "against the odds" issue is winning their Party Primary, because across the Country, when it comes to Presidential Elections, the country is pretty much divided 50/50.
When it comes to Congressional Elections, the situation is VERY different. Some/many Congressional Districts are set up to be guaranteed for particular parties.
Why do you think the Democrats nominated a person who had had four Heart attacks as their candidate (and that was the original backstory for the "Horton Wilder" campaign (check out the "Debate Camp" episode)). Sam KNEW going in that he had no chance to win (unlike Will in Season 7), despite the freak result Will achieved (see Sam's reaction when he talks to Donna before agreeing to be candidate).
While Sorkin wrote utopian politics, he wasn't so divorced from reality that he thought that Sam could overturn a solidly Republican district.
If they wanted to keep Sam in the show, they could have appointed him "Senior Councilor to the President", but they didn't, so Sam, the LA native, went back home and found love...
    Why is that bad?

  • @northcountycountry4144

You emphasize personalities of each character good! Also, characters work as pairs... not only in dialogue but in roles (Leo...CJ Chief of staff; Jed...Santos pres), pairs 1-many (pres..advisors), etc.. the dialogue not only drives character interaction/development... the dialogue transforms storytelling from a flat narrative to visual scenes where pairs are ever-present. The visual engagement through pairs makes the West Wing from a page-turner into episodic explorations. The titles of each episode serves as bridges within a season or between seasons.
Lost stands as a visual pivot in storytelling from interior (West Wing). Lost/Alias and West Wing own their own success by bringing to the forefront methods of engagement and spectatorship. West Wing remains less escapist as each election year emerges.

Nice job. I felt like we were sitting in my living room and you were talking directly to me. We agree on a few characters, but not all. Amy Gardner I couldn't take. Her slurring of words and lack of eye contact in most conversations just left me cold. The one character who I loved without reservation was Sam. He always did the right thing, unlike Toby or the others. He was perfect to me. He had class like when he didn't tell Donna's friend that the grandfather was really a spy. He let her save face. I was a teacher and never had time to watch television so I've watched reruns of everything now that I'm retired. I think I'm on my 5th viewing of the entire West Wing series and never tire of it. It's like spending an evening with friends. Leo was a bit too hawkish for my liberal Democratic beliefs. Like you, I loved Fitz and Nancy. C.J. had her foibles and I cringed when she talked about how her father was passed over due to affirmative action. Bleh. I always skip The Long Goodbye when I binge watch. Oh, one more thing, I always had a crush on Ron Silver and was heartbroken when he led the Arnie campaign, but I did forgive him. I loved Ron's speech in an earlier episode when he vented his frustration with Democrats. I thought it was odd that they portrayed him as Italian but his Yiddish references were fantastic. Anyway, I'm now free associating. I just wanted to tell you that I enjoyed your entire video and appreciated all of your insights to the show. Bravo!

Totally agree on most all of your assessments
Especially favorite scenes with Fitz-Wallace and the not liking so much of Mandy.
Zoe changes because she spent a year at college. College is the end of nice girls everywhere.
What happened to the soundtrack under (over) Bingo Bob?
Will's character is handicapped by the departure of Aaron - although his sister was one of the prettiest and intelligent ladies in the show - a show full of brilliant and attractive women.
For the Santos Gang, Josh becomes Leo - the father figure
Santo/Josh friendship scene of hesitation was written, in my opinion, to show us that Santos is a good man but he is not Bartlett, and the real strength in his upcoming Presidency will be significantly weaker than that under the more compassionate and secure in his position, Bartlett
CJ Cregg is one of those women that is totally overlooked by the current 'woke' mob who cry there were no strong, kick ass women in film and television before the unrealistic things of 2020. She was the Kickingest, of all of them
My daughter is named Claudia Jean for this lady.
Donna was the perfect schill for Josh - she asked the questions that the audience asked and allowed Josh to give us his explanation...Mansplaining in action but with a real reason.
The FIRST thing that really made Charlie the best was his reaction to being told to check the ringer Basket Ball player...it was the funniest intro to all the episodes and his 'look' was perfect.
Bartlett - as President he is like an impressionist painting - all the bits the artist didn't like, he took out. = Aaron.
As for being silly at the first episode, it was Leo's bike that became arboreal.
Josh - you need to watch Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip - especially since you liked the Matthew Perry character...
Star Wars Disney films are a waste of everything film making - especially in the writing department.

Yeah, sorry about the audio portion with Bob Russel.
It is interesting how Santos isn't suppose to be as good as Bartlet, but even for Santos' character I'm not sure that pans out. Santos is show(especially in the beginning) to be loyal to people first. It's one of the reasons Josh picks him to run, and while he does learn to be a better politician over the course of the show, the fact he doesn't lose his love of people is what makes him right for the position in the first place imo.
Also, totally agree with the Charlie scene...great open

The Bartlett - Secretary of Agriculture scene was written by Aaron Sorkin, whose utopian vision has the Chief of Staff as the BF of the President.
Lawrence O'Donnell (like Josh a former Chief of Staff to the Senate Majority Leader) was the lead writer by the time of Season 6/7. That the President would choose a seasoned Political operative as Chief of Staff is far more based in Reality, than Sorkin's Utopian vision.
Additionally, Josh didn't knock on Santos's front door to urge him to run, simply to become the next Bruno Gianelli. Josh was always a person committed to getting his hands dirty to getting the job done...

Well done piece. Thanks for making it. I agree with 95% of your character opinions. Special shout out for Oliver Platt, Michael O'Neill and Mark Harmon's work but I understand you couldn't include everybody. Oh, and I would have rather dated Marion Coatsworth Hay over Zoey Bartlett any day of the week. She was a spoiled brat. Let the Prince of Swell-hair keep her locked up in his castle.🤣

On Joey Lucas another reason Josh trust her so much is she has empathy because after Josh tells Joey about the MS and they make a plan. Joey could have just stood up and left to do her job. But he didn't. She asks Josh about how the president is doing. In the world of politics we see people become numb and Josh is a very emotion driven person. So someone who shows their emotions he has more trust for.

I share your enthusiasm for this series. I largely agree with the 'character-rankings' you propose. I would have given Aaron Sorkin higher credit / visibility in the hope that a similar effort might be exerted for the 'public-good'. The current dispersal / dissolution of the media-market precludes a reiteration of this very impactful series.

Good job - but sadly, from 32:25 to 34:53, your sound balance makes you inaudible?
Also - you don't seem aware that the original plan was that Vinnick would beat Santos and become the next president - but the writers realised Santos's team got too many kickings and it would just be too easy. But that's where the early direction was headed.

what NEVER made any senes to me in any way was Leo s wife and her reason for divoricing Leo. All the years Leo was drinkin and taking pill, she stayed, when Leo relapsed and went back to Recovery she stayed BUT because Leo s job to the Pres causes him to spend less time with her THAT makes her cut bait, SERIOUSLY . That s just insane, as Leo says I try to be with you as much as I can, it s a demanding job on a hood day. My point is when Leo was at his worse / his lowest she stayed HOPEFULY out of love . But spending less time together is a leget reson to leave your husband of many years, wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

I loved the characters and writing in the West Wing. It made me so sad and angry that I could not enjoy the show as much as I should have been able to because of the dem politics that were pretty much always front and center. It was a tame compared to today, of course, but still it always irritated me. The characters were well meaning but they were so wrong most of the time and the few, few times they were shown to be wrong it was glorious. It made me angry to have such likeable, smart characters express their wrongness so articulately. It made me angry to have to be so angry at characters I, at heart, liked. But I did like the sincerety of their wrongness.

First, let me say that this is a brilliant video. And I LOVE the West Wing, some of the best television I've ever seen. I bring out the box set often. But when I re-watch, I tend to do Seasons 1 through 5 and skip Seasons 6 and 7. I found it disappointing the way Josh and Donna jump ship, it was like watching a family dissolve and with it so many things I loved about the show. I know the election and transition were important and needed to be covered but I thought it was top-heavy and characters at the heart of the first 5 seasons were side lined, particularly Toby who is my favourite character. We see far too little of him, particularly in Season 7 and I found the way they ended his story his sad and disappointing.

J. and Danny, long before they admit it, it s the little things like Danny buying C.J. a goldfish , not relizing it s the crackers she liked. it was awesome they ended up together, a man waiting 8 years for a lady should have the lady in the end

This fictional TV drama will NEVER be recreated. I believe it's fair to call TWW a true phenomenon, when you look back at issues raised in the show some 20 years ago "fictionally" and events that are in the news or actually happening in real life...some are happening presently as a matter of fact. Kind of surreal when you think about it.

(laughed out aloud on " was happy when she left and didn't come back "!!!! but I think it was not because of the character writing but the actor. She was a bad actor. Same for the French boyfriend with phony French accent. All in all, a great show and Sorkin is a genius dialog writer.
