  • Welcome to another episode of Ancient News!
First, let us apologize for the audio issues. Please adjust your speakers accordingly. We think we've figured it out for later episodes.
Also: At 12:16 James has sent us a correction -- The Hittite hieroglyphs are not 1500 but 3500 years old.
Our flaws exposed... now on with the show! Today James Flieschmann from the Ancient Beat Newsletter brings five of his favorite stories from the headlines of ancient history, anthropology, and archaeology. First, a bombshell in Egyptology. Zahi Hawass has news about Queen Nefertiti's mummy! And there's even more news coming about ancient Egypt. Grave robbers who hoped to steal from undiscovered tombs in ancient Memphis have led authorities to even greater discoveries! What can calcium spherulites in fossilized dung tell us about animal domestication in Syria nearly 15,000 years ago? Quite a lot, actually! Then off to the Caucasus mountains of Georgia, where a 1.8 million year old tooth has been discovered! And finally, hidden hieroglyphs of Hittites in Hattusa have been revealed! Take a look at images that haven't been seen for thousands of years!
These five stories are just an introduction to the compendious collections at Ancient Beat! ancientbeat.substack.com/p/an... Do James a favor and subscribe!

I am delighted that you are continuing Nick’s channel. His untimely death proves that only the good die young. But I am sure that he passed his intellectual curiosity and wonderful personality on to his children and pray that almighty God will protect them and their mother, Nick’s wife, and guide them throughout their life.

But then again, Hawass is known to be a bit hyperbolic, and over-eager to pronounce things as facts when they are not yet proven, so we shall wait and see.
This news series is an exiting thing and has been badly needed forever, so thank you SO MUCH for bringing it us, as well of course for keeping Nick's wonderful dream alive!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. And all of the best wishes in the world to Nick's wife and kids. ❤❤❤

My thoughts on the transition to agriculture is that there was a shift towards domestication first with people rather than running after game, found ways to lock them into an area. In areas with grain grasses they found more animals that would be non migratory and fodder for the livestock. I often wonder if burning a piece of forest to create open grazing grounds to attract animals would have been a first step. Grasses sprouting up instead that in some regions turned out to be primitive grains. Something like that happening would explain the slow transition. From a method to lure animals into a trap to sowing seeds around of the stuff the animals like and eating those seeds in lean times and figure out that it makes brew that makes you jolly. Don't know how much is know about these peoples diet yet, so just a wild speculation. But it would make sense of our findings so far I think.

I am enjoying the ancient news that you have been posting. It seems for a while you were posting every month on the topic (which was greatly appreciated)... Recently it seems that either you have fallen behind or lapsed due to the holidays. Are there any more that you intend to post in the future?
    Thank you.

    Random suggestions 🙂
    - y'all are going to hate yourselves in a few months if you don't have more distinctive titles, I promise.
Which episode covered XY&Z? Was that Episode 005 or Episode 025?
Better: Ancient News S1 E05. Nefertiti, Rameseum and tomb robbers, Early Agriculture, 1.5M yo tooth in Georgia.
    - Easier to skim descriptions: The description on this video is very thorough, but it's a huge, monolithic block of teeny little text.
Many of us are on mobile and refuse to admit that we need bifocals yet, please have mercy on us!
    - Bullet points are your friends!
-Double space in between paragraphs, points or sentences to make it easier to read, and to find a particular topic. This also helps important things to stand out.
-Time Stamps? Creators can mark 'chapters' in their videos so viewers can easily find a particular discussion. No hurry though, don't worry about those until the basics get to be second nature!
    - Please, please make sure that Morgan's GoFundMe is at the top of each description with a short 1 sentence description. 🙂
Y'all are doing a great job! It's been fun watching y'all improve from episode to episode. I'm super excited to see where y'all go with this. Nick is so proud of you guys, and so are all of us! 🤗

Article#3. I’ve been saying this for two decades. What motivated man into keeping animals? Starvation, cold, and desperation. In an era that you can have Jack in the Box delivered to your door by an internet order, we’ve forgotten how it feels to not know how you’re going to feed your kids. Also, if you’re a man that’s too old to hunt, you’re motivated to come up with a reason the clan should keep you around. One way is trapping animals. To trap them you have to know about them specifically what they eat. Catch five rabbits, eat one feed the rest till tomorrow when you’ll eat another. Unless they breed. Now we’re getting somewhere.
Science has turned the “Ancient men” into stupid monkey men because of their own lack of knowledge of survival skill sets and cultural acumen required to subsist.

7:50 Do you think that both domestication and plant farming started with small temporary sites of either one depending on what species were available in the region? So they could grow a small garden then move on to their wintering areas for example rather than settling down and farming in one area once and for all and staying there from then on?
Maybe people experimented with both for thousands of years and different peoples started and stopped and experimented on and off for those multi-thousands of years? "Play gardens" on river bends that change every year and religious-focused gardens could have been a part of it too?

I would think that the reason for Anatolian Hieroglyphs were continued and Cuneiform wasn't could be that the Hieroglyphs were used to write Luwian (and Cuneiform only rarely) while Cuneiform was used for Hittite, and the Hittite language died out (probably being used only ritually in later times of the Hittite empire), while Luwian survived the collapse in those post-Hittite states.
