    8:58 "There is absolutely no reason to play Star Fox 2 when games like Star Fox 64 are better in just about every category."
    I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree with you there. While I get your arguments against it such the games clunkyness, the walker and strategic elements make it stand out from the other games (without being too divisive like Assault's ground missions) and I feel that gives more reason to want to go back to it. Now saying you don't want to go back to the original game when 64 exists makes more sense since 64 was literally a reboot of it, although even then I personally still like to revist the original as well.

    • @takeoutfromchina3166
      @takeoutfromchina3166 Před 4 lety +7

      Werewolfwrath, StarFox 64's statue is to blame for some of the biggest issues in the series, including: overshadowing, purists that ignore the original and latch onto the reboot as if it were the original, stagnation, and bad fan service. Don't get me wrong 64 is a good game, heck the controls, the objective paths mechanic, and characters got me in love, but it's not so good that it makes innovation obsolete. Do people still enjoy those landmaster and blue marine sections because last I checked people tried to avoid them. I bring all of this to say that we shouldn't ignore the good in the other games and that incorporating the good doesn't hurt. It also helps to remove the Rose tinted glasses that everyone likes to wear these days.

      But _everyone wanted_ Star Fox 2 until they realized it just wasn't as good as the original Star Fox. For me, its the bloody laggy frame rate and camera issues that kill it for me. • @Z95HeadHunter
      @Z95HeadHunter Před 4 lety +4

      StarFox Assault and StarFox 2 are both better directions to take the series than StarFox 64, and I think it shows given how Zero went out.

    Turns out that according to some supplementary info, a "Mission File Printout" guide for the series, Andross was using a Remote-Controlled Computer to oversee his armies without needing to be present. In short, he pulled the old "Doombot" trick --- and Star Fox 2 was the second time he did so.

    Zero definitely deserves a reworked Switch release. As long as they don't remove one gimmick for another. If they strip the gamepad controls then force motion controls it won't fix the problem. The game desperately needs traditional control methods. They can add motion controls as an option, but they shouldn't be forced on the player. I bought Zero day 1, and I don't regret it, but I also haven't touched it again since about a week after launch. I did EVENTUALLY get used to the controls, but just because I got used to them doesn't mean I like them. #JusticeForZero

      Man, honestly my biggest disappointment with that game was the severe lack of quality & content in the alternate route stages.
      To reach them typically you had to find a portal in the mission you’re in, which instantly and abruptly ends the mission you’re in. And they’re typically only like either half the size of a main route mission (like being just a boss fight for instance). They felt off.
      And then the gyro-copter vehicle. Like, on the one hand I actually do love the thing and the levels they’re in...but on the other hand, they’re do really kill the pace of a typical Star Fox run.
      I think I’d prefer to just have one massive version of a route that goes though all the stages. It could be easily done, with just a slight tweaking here and there. Sure, it’d feel wildly different from the typical Star Fox formula...but in my opinion even if so it’d still be better than what we got in Zero.

    Nearly everything that Star Fox 2 does Command (and partially Zero) does too, so for anyone interested in these mechanics in a less clunky game should definitely check that out.
    It's sad that they didn't give Miyu and Fay another chance in more recent games. As I said, most mechanics have been explored in other titles, but those characters got lost entirely in time, which feels to me like some wasted potential to expand the cast.

      As for Miyu and Fay, as other's had said and it being pointed out, they kind of more or less have been replaced by the newer characters. One of them by Krystal, and the other (or the same one) by Katt.

    11:45 I love ya, Johnny, but I'mma have to disagree with you here. Star Fox Zero failed because it was a shooter in which the devs purposefully gimped the aiming in order to shove a hardware gimmick down our throats. That's just bad game design.
    Make no mistake, I'd love to see Star Fox Zero come to Switch, but only if they actually...you know...made the game good.

    • @toamatoro570
      @toamatoro570 Před 3 lety +1

      People at the time were constantly bitching for Nintendo to utilize the gamepad and when they did they were criticized for it. I can agree that adding an analog aiming option for those uninterested in the gyroscope would have been a good way to make the game more accessible but I firmly believe it's hated due to gaming journalists giving it a prematurely bad reputation. You don't see people giving Zelda shit for gyroscope bow aiming.
      It's Zero's lack of additional content to warrant a 50 dollar purchase that bothers me, not so much the game design itself.

    • @Dal_9000
      @Dal_9000 Před 3 lety

      @@toamatoro570 I understand where you're coming from. I think Zelda's inclusion of gyro aiming enhanced the experience without sacrificing anything to do so. Star Fox Zero's issue is that they actively made aiming inaccurate where it wasn't before, just to force people to use a far less fluent scheme.
      But you raise an excellent point that the amount of content for price wasn't what people expected in the modern year of the time. More original content and greater control options would have helped this game tremendously.

    Expert mode with Miyu and Fay is not too hard, but you really need to be on the top of your game and manage your Barriers/Bombs/Health regen propelly... especially if Andross decides to send Space Blade as one of the bosses you have to deal with (if you have at least 2 barriers for that boss regardless of your character, you're pretty much safe as long as you trigger happy that blaster button), and yeah, Expert Mode can be very hectic if you don't have a strategy to do things fast (and the Bombs are way too broken to deal with most of the game with ease), but there are also some stuff you can consider, for example, if a battleship is about to fire it's attack (that is 50% damage to Corneria), if you manage to enter the battle, the ship won't fire until you return to the map (assuming you don't destroy it of course) and the ship won't try to kill you with it's overpowered shots that pretty much are very inacurate to begin with, if you have good equipment and you're trying to destroy an enemy but a Star Wolf member is close to you, let them enter the fray, destroy the remnants of the enemy unit you decided to attack and kill the Star Wolf member (this is better done if you have bombs to cheese them), and for the viruses you can apply what I call the "hit and run" strategy (that you pretty much try to destroy at least 1 of the 3 virus enemies and then use the return to map option to deny the virus unit the out of range advantage they get to get the satellite faster than usual if at least 1 of them escapes, this can also apply to enemy squads from the battleships... pretty much an extremely cheap but mandatory strategy if you're not using either Miyu or Fay in the fight).

    I personally prefer the high energy intense gameplay loop of Star Fox 2. Everything feels so awesome, such a struggle for survival.
    It feels more focused and mature that Star Fox 64 did.
    64 focused more on obscure branching paths, and gimmicks like 2 Land Master segments and one 1 Blue Marine segment.
    Personally I found it hard to really care about the level to level progression, when it meant that I could *loose so much progress* if I game over at any point.
    But I respect your opinion Johnny. 64 is a really fun game.
    It's also nice that there is no spoken dialogue, since it means I don't have to worry about lines getting repetitive, or breaking my concentration.
