The PlayStation Classic, to put it kindly, is Sony’s tepid attempt to cash in on the Nintendo mini console market. The difference being that the NES Classic and SNES Classic both have a much better lineup of games and are largely cheaper, making the PS1 Classic fall flat on its face in many ways. The full lineup of games on the tiny PS1 system (featuring a very small review of each port from Caddy) includes Battle Arena Toshinden, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, Final Fantasy VII (or Final Fantasy 7, whatevs), Grand Theft Auto, Intelligent Qube (Kurushi), Jumping Flash, Metal Gear Solid, Mr Driller, Oddworld Abe’s Oddysee, Rayman, Resident Evil, Revelations Persona, R4 Ridge Racer Type 4, Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo, Syphon Filter, Tekken 3, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, Twisted Metal and Wild Arms. A few good, a few bad, but overall a pretty lacklustre setlist for this Playstation mini review.

Last night I fell asleep on the couch watching youtube on my laptop with my headphones on. The autoplay feature was on and came to this video, the sound at 0:20 woke me up. I've never been more scared and confused in my whole life than waking up in a daze to that clip. I quickly closed my laptop in fear and went to bed.
Over the course of the day today I convinced myself that I hadn't actually seen this terrifying video and it was certainly just some sort of nightmare. I checked my history though and found this video, and the clip that haunted me. Watching it again I find myself even more scared and confused than I was last night.

FFVII, MGS, Resident Evil, Syphon Filter, Oddworld, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3? The problem is that a lot of them are either great, but not top 20 material like Mr Driller, Super Puzzle Fighter II, Kurushi, Rayman, Wild Arms or they are the inferior ones in the franchise like Twisted Metal, Destruction Derby, Grand Theft Auto, games that see historical important for PlayStation buy aren't great low Jumping Flash and Toshiden or just straight up garbage like Rainbow 6.

Mr Driller may be a good game but it's not really a "classic" for most of the people.... Top 20 material really ? And Wild Arms over FFVII ? I mean, i liked Wild Arms like any SNES RPG but..... Talking about how a game is significant historically is how we avoid this kind of argument. I may prefer Xenogears as long as i want, it will always be a fact that FFVII was the one which marked the world.
The inclusion of GTA & Persona feel like they were included because of what they mean to Playstation now, instead of their importance to Playstation at the time.
If they released a PS2 Classic with GTA3 and Persona 4, that would've made so much more sense.

They do this to all of the bigger reviewers, which is a huge problem in the gaming community in terms of reviewing games in an unbiased manner. It's a conflict of interest

So many PS1 games left ignored, unsupported, and forgotten. Let us take a moment to mourn the actual classics and possibly amazing obscure PS1 titles that we grew up with and didn't grow up with. Not every game can get the attention and fanbase it deserves.
Like the Lunar Rpgs.
There are so many great games on so many systems left ignored that would never get a second chance. It's quite sad when you think about it...

Not only that, but there were also a few Wipeout games on the Sega Saturn, the direct competitor of the original Playstation. If the Wipeout series was owned by Sony, they wouldn't have made the games run on their competitors' consoles.

wadeboshiverson that's exactly what I thought. I can't imagine the Nintendo classic without Mario or Seamus, or my personal favorite,Zelda. But this isn't the first time PlayStation released something while ignoring their classics. PlayStation all stars completely ignored crash, spyro and Lara croft, not to mention at least one final fantasy character, but they gave us two Cole mcgrath's

The PAL ROMs were chosen as the PSClassic can’t reach 60fps, but can manage 50fps.
Unfortunately, the PSClassic is locked to 60hz output, which makes the already choppier PAL ROMs juddery and awful as 50fps is being badly converted to 60fps, preventing even us European users from watching the 50hz content in its native framerate, minimising judder.

In my game design class, we had to make a game based off of Mr. Driller. An entire semester and I didn't even remember it was made for the Playstation. I guess that tells you they chose pretty obscure games for that thing.
That moment when the snowboarding minigame is final fantasy 7 is a better snowboarding experience then the entire Coolboarders franchise.

They destroyed persona 1 on ps1. Its hella censored, they changed all the names , made one main character black despite him being called a monkey later on in the game which really might be problematic for them and then they made the game much easier and removed half of the game for the western audiences. The psp version fixes all of it.

Fun fact: the Japanese version of the PS Classic came bundled with a different set of games, replacing Cool Boarders, Destruction Derby, GTA, Rayman, Oddworld, Twisted Metal, Siphon Filter and Tom Clancy with Arc the Lad 1 + 2, Armored Core, G-Darius, Gradius Gaiden, Devil Dice, SaGa Frontier and Parasite Eve. Still not a perfect "Classic" collection, but a hell of a lot better. Why couldn't WE get Parasite Eve or Armored Core? We didn't even get a single shmup.
Damn. I forgot about that - surprised Caddy didn't mention it.

I picked one up for 12$ new and in box last year, i didnt grow up on ps1, but I definitely had fun with it! It was a gateway of sorts into retro games that i hadn’t played before. I am now very into retro games and despite its poor reception, i have the ps classic to thank for that!

I can answer the question about why Silent Hill wasn't on the classic, Konami lost ALL of their master copies of the classic Silent Hill games, this was why when they made the Silent Hill HD collection was garbage, the dev team literally had to start from scratch and had about 5 months to get both games ready I'm time for October

@@liamanderson7082 Localization changing names, races, dialogue, and the setting. The game also runs slower compared to the PSP version. The PS1 version is playable, but a lot of changes in it contrasts with the future games in the series released in the west.
Even then the psp version isnt perfect since it doesnt have the original sountrack and instead has a repetitive newer soundtrack that fits the later persona games.

Many great true classics missing but I feel like the game library is not even the main argument AGAINST this console. If the hardware design wasn't flawed and it would have had some more options in the menu etc it would have been at least an argument against using other emulating systems over it.
Right. With it already having been hacked and one beeing able to put own roms on it, it could have been used as a fun, stylish little plug-and-play emulator, where you just put your own library on it. But even the emulator sucks so it really isn't worth it.

I've rewinded those 30 seconds quite a bit more than I probably should've.
The Medievil games for sure (One of my favorite first-party Playstation series ever despite being only two games and two remakes long...and I am very excited for the PS4 remake) as well as the Crash and Spyro trilogies.
And you did a pretty good job of highlighting what else is criminally missing from a list of PS1 classics like Tomb Raider, the Gex games, Klonoa, and so much more.
