Thanks Rick! This was my favorite show growing up in the 60's and 70's (and still is to this day!) I actually recall I collected Addams Family portrait puzzle pieces from (I think) bubble gum packets (like baseball cards), and assembled it in it's entirety back then. Purchased the complete series on DVD a while back. Love all the props! Thanks again Rick!

You've essentially have the info correct on what is done with sets & props after production use is over. Most special props are built or rented from prop houses and reused or re-purposed. I was in set construction for many decades. I worked at many major studio lots. I worked on the crew of Addam's Family feature films. Those sets were made of oak. That is not routine and very special and costly. Those Addamm's sets were 'folded and hold' because a third film was planned. When Raul Julia died, that idea was scrapped. I was on the crew that took the set pieces and props out of storage and destroyed or was given permission to take them home. I kept many film items, eventually keeping them for Halloween time decorations at my own home. And finally sold off items or donated some to nonprofit orgs for their own holiday use.

Dear Rick, as an Addams fan here is what i know about the Addams props :
    - most of the props ( antiques, tables, sideboards, etc ) were rented from prop houses and were given back. When most of prop houses closed down they were probably sold in public auctions; unfortunately tracking them is practically impossible.
    - some small props not reusable for future productions were taken home by studio staff , actors and executives.
    - other props specifically built for the set ( the two headed turtle, the wolf statue in the conservatory, chinese war masks, the giraffe painting "pongo zarafa",etc ) went destroyed in a studio fire and lost forever. This were lightweight ( empty ) objects; those which did not perish in the studio fire, have probably disintegrated during the years. Late Ken weatherwax said he saw some Addams family fake brickwalls few years ago, while working for the same studio where the addams family was filmed.
The moose head, polar bear, iron maiden etc were property of general service studios and later used in other productions and finally sold. Most object are difficult to track today, many things might have survived as private pieces of furniture and owners might not know about their tv history. What is actually known to have survived till today is :
1- the original white polar bear ( originally brown but repainted white in season 2 because too dark for the soundstage ); it also appears in the first addams movie. Collector Backlot Charlie is now the owner.
2- one wood tresure chest with ornaments ( playroom prop )
    3 - iron maiden ( playroom prop )
    4 - uncle festers costume ( unknown collector )
5- one of thing box ( went on auction few years ago )
    6 - small car vulture-shaped ornament
7- the estate of David Levy include the original chas addams house painting seen in the opening sequence; location and ownership unknown

So according to Peter Falk's book '…Just one more thing' Morticia's original wicker chair was used in the 'Columbo' episode 'The Most Crucial Game' it was also pink, which he ascribes to the contrast needed for Black&White which actually makes sense. Another 'Columbo' episode has prop storage and tracking as a plot point, and Falk seemed to find the reality of that interesting.
I don't know if it was one he used on screen but Carolyn Jones had a pocket watch engraved for John Astin, which he spoke about in an interview.

Sir, I respect your effort, your knowledge and your passion for these shows. So let's bypass the usual 'which is better?' question for this: How would our two 1960's freaky families have gotten along, had they met, IYHO? Back in the day, on Channel 11-WPIX-NYC (an indie at the time, now a CW), the shows reran back to back, and the announcer would call them 'next door neighbors' (even though the Munsters were in California, and the Addamses came off as East Coast patrician), so this idea really intrigues me.

Hi Rick. I have worked in the Entertainment Industry on many shows over the years, and it was a common practice for the cast and crew to souvenirs things off the set when the show rapped, as I have done. Some of the props were rented and would have to be returned, but a lot of items would be trashed so people would take things home. I have worked with people who have taken walls, windows, doors etcetera from set and build extension on to their house. This saved the producers having to pay someone to get rid of the stuff off the stage as another production would be wanting to move in. But now days they hang on to everything that is made for the production as it has a resale value to the fans.

    • @gassaarm
      @gassaarm Před 5 lety

I think if I remember correctly, they wanted a very big bear as dressing on the set. But as they could not rent a large enough prop, so the produces went and shot a Polar Bear and had it stuffed for the show. It was white at first when you see it in the Addams House, but they had it dyed later to look like a brown bear.

When I was working in the Army, word got out that some contractors were done and no longer coming to work. Their office was empty and open for whom ever can put a claim on it.
Now that means what ever is left goes to whom ever can take it.
Everyone defended on the office and got staplers, filing cabinets, desks and chairs. People took everything right down to the paperclips. By the end of the day the only things left were the phones attached to the walls and light fixtures.
It is the easiest way for contractors to clean a room so it can go back to the landlord. I had never seen such a feeding frenzy like that.
I am thinking that’s what happened here.
The cast and crew took what they wanted the day before the set was to be stricken. Whatever was left went back to the props department.

for prop's , there was little time some times to strike a movie or show set and meant lot was in the dumpster, now a day's prop's are in such demand that some actor's negotiate them into there contracts, when they shoot a movie or show,

I know there were Munster movies with the TV cast, but what about Addams Family? Ever a movie with the original TV series cast?

Yes, there was actually. It was a reunion movie.

I have no doubt a few of the major props will start popping up sooner rather than later. Nobody lives forever.

This is total baloney. Most of the large floor props were owned by MGM or Ellis Props. General Service Studios, where Addams was shot supplied most of the hand props. General often sold props in a “garage sale” type fashion. After the series wrapped, many of the large props were bought by Hollywood Wax Museum, and displayed in their Chamber if Horrors. They were later sold by them via auction. Not all of the props survived their hands. There was a warehouse fire and the owner told me they lost the turtle in that fire. All these rumors of thievery started with Steve Cox’s Addams Family book, but it just isn’t true. Some hand props may have been pocketed, but this free for all looting the set rumor is for the most part, bullshit.

One. All those exploding scenes are one piece of recycled footage

That wasn't a specially made prop, but a commercially produced magic trick. I had one before the show even aired, still have it to this day.
