You always wow me with the details you can come up with, thanks again for a fun great channel! Can't wait to see what's next??
Grandpa was part wolf and bat. The episode when they went camping and grandpa was captured as a wolf and worn around Lily's neck to escape from park rangers.
He was a wot
In the old dracula lore he could turn into a wolf so I always thought that's what they were referencing
The answer is simple: Lily and Grandpa are vampires.
In European folklore, werewolves and vampires are very similar if not the same creature. In some legends, you had to burn the body of a werewolf after killing it, otherwise it would rise as a vampire. In the novel Dracula, Dracula was more associated with wolves than with bats, and we see Grandpa turn into both in the show. Silver was a vampire weakness before it was a werewolf weakness. Also in the novel, Count Dracula was depicted as the origin of the werewolf legend and one of the names the inhabitants of Transylvania refer to him as is "Vrolok" which means werewolf. It's only in the modern age of film that the two types of monster are distinguished from one another.
Count Dracula is based off of Vlad the impaler
3:23 “If Grandma is deceased, maybe she caught the silver bullet, who knows?” Brilliant! 🤣
Haha haha, sharp ears, Robert! You’re the first one to note that 🤣
Your explanations of the dramatic logic of these old shows never cease to amaze me.
I’m glad it “amazes” you haha. Thank you!
I thought Eddie looked like a werewolf and vampire.
They represented the Monsters from old Hollywood films.
Thanks.🧛♂️
One might wonder, then, why they ignored "The Creature from the Black Lagoon," and the Mummy from full representation.
@@bradsmack1 there was an Uncle Gil, who was a gillman.
@@melissagerber7231 Very good! Not that familiar with the show, so good to know! Thanks!
Yes, Eddie's 'Widow's Peak' haircut is very reminiscent of a vampire. Also Herman had 'hairy hands' in early shows, and in European folklore, werewolf and vampire strains can 'overlap' with qualities of both!. Quote "Another type of Romanian vampire is pricolici. These types are humans born with a tail, and they can shape-shift like a werewolf but they have control over their transformation." Finally, several 'names' for 'vampire', actually translate to 'werewolf' i.e. 'Loogaroo' possibly comes from the French loup-garou (meaning 'werewolf') and is common in the culture of Mauritius. Or the Greek 'vrykolakas' (comes from a Slavic word meaning 'werewolf') and has much in common with the European vampire.👍🇬🇧
QUESTION: Why is Eddie Munster a werewolf if Herman and Lilly are not? ANSWER: I met Butch Patrick at a convention and I asked him that same question and he said Lilly was part vampire and part werewolf.
That would explain why she was never out sucking peoples blood, I guess.
@@SSN515 Not really. I assume they had some supply of blood that they got from somewhere so they did not have to go hunting for it. IF she were half werewolf then she should have turned into a wolf on the full moon and tried to kill those she loved most. There is nowhere in the show that they had any implication of her being a werewolf. Only that Butch Patrick said this gives it any credence.
@@imkluu Yeah. Grandpa didn't go after people either, so you are most likely correct.
Of course, hasn't anyone seen Underworld?
A question I’ve heard asked quite a few times regarding this show. I remember it being brought up when Butch Patrick was a guest on The Simpson’s and he said that didn’t know and that he also never really thought about it. I also remember the episode that featured Lilly’s brother, so it does make sense as to how Eddie is a werwolf. Thanks for the video Rick, keep up the great work!
I really like the dot connecting here. One other thought, in some folklore, werewolves are thought to turn into vampires when they die unless they are buried in consecrated ground. Since Lily is dead, she is a vampire. Eddie is still alive, so he would be a werewolf.
The original bi-racial sitcom family! How cutting edge.
@Skye Dragon7 false
I believe that would trail into I love Lucy as bi racial family
And it showed the prejudice of whitey to anything different from them.
Not really biracial if you figure monster as a race but more like a half German half Irish
I remember the episode with Lester! It makes sense Eddie would get werewolf genes from his uncle. Arooooooooooh!!
My man you said Lily was “the son” of Dracula!!! Oooops!!!
I didn't notice that. Good catch!
@Bob Sebring LOL!
I don't remember them ever talking about Marilyn's parents, although Wikipedia says she was Lily's sister's daughter.
Then why would Herman give the name Munster to Marilyn !?!
@@whats20buks57 I guess the writers didn't have a lot of time for logic in 1960's sitcoms when they had to do 39 a year. And how DID Jerry Van Dyke's mother wind up in a 1928 Porter anyway?
She’s adopted into Hermans family therefore she gets the same name
@@okjoe5561 And, don't get me started on a talking horse.....Wil.....BUR!
In one of the tv movies they clarify She's the daughter of Jekyll. Hyde is part of herman's family and they see Jekyll as the horrible transformation instead.
Early episodes, Herman had hairy hands. For whatever reason, the show decided to change his hands to just skin. I hate inconsistencies in series, so in my mind, I imagined he started shaving his hands. So in that case, Herman could have contributed to the werewolf gene pool, from his hands. 😄
Herman also looked scarier as well in the early episodes. My theory is the producers got Feedback from some viewers saying Herman was a bit too scary. So good bye hairy hands and scary face. Just sayin'.
@@dianetheisen8664 yes, you're probably right 😄
Recessive genes is a weird thing. My son for the first eight years or so was the spit and image of my brother, which would've been very suspicious had it not been for the fact that my brother had passed away fifteen years before my son was conceived.
I liked the story about how Butch Patrick was chosen to play Eddie. In the series pilot episode different actors played Eddie and (Phoebe) Lily (Joanna Marshal). The test audience did not care for how the actor (Happy Derman) portrayed Eddie, so he was replaced by Butch Patrick and his character was made more sweet and innocent. The first characterization was more aggressive and wolf like.
There is a episodes were grandpa munster turns into a wolf one is the campaign episode and the other is when they didn't want a gas company digging underneath the house. Isn't Mrs Munster half witch?
Also the one where he left home & worked in a sleazy club as a magician. When they opened the chained box he jumped out as a werewolf
Wow, that Lester sure had good taste when it came to suits. Oddly enough, his hair was also perfect.
Frankenstein monster was made from parts of others.... SO.... maybe the wolfmans was killed and his testicles were put on when he was made!!!
lol
🤪....Haha😉
Lolll wtf???
Think about it!!... makes sense.... Lawrence Talbot dies in a freak accident. While Igor is harvesting bodies they dig him up and chop off his packages only to be sewed on snd then..... Viola!!!.... Frankenstein / Werewolf!!!
😄
In folklore, a werewolf[a] (Old English: werwulf, "man-wolf"), or occasionally lycanthrope /ˈlaɪkənˌθroʊp/ (Greek: λυκάνθρωπος lukánthrōpos, "wolf-person"), is a human with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf (or, especially in modern film, a therianthropic hybrid wolflike creature), either purposely or after being placed under a curse or affliction (often a bite or scratch from another werewolf) with the transformations occurring on the night of a full moon. Early sources for belief in this ability or affliction, called lycanthropy /laɪˈkænθrəpi/, are Petronius (27-66) and Gervase of Tilbury (1150-1228).
I liked that they were worried that Marilyn was going to be a "old maid" because of her "unattractive" "handicap".
Yes haha. That’s why they adopted her. It’s a great premise
Hey Rick, I don't remember the episode with Lily's brother but what you are saying makes sense! Thanks for all the hard work & research you put into every video!!
On to 100k 😷
Of course, you are too kind.,
Great vid! I use to watch this show everyday after school. Love your work and efforts man!! Amazing!! Love to see you do something on Green Acres! That show had its weird and twisted moments lol and like Gilligan's Island (and many shows in that era) broke the forth wall several times which added to the comedic "situations" lol.
Some Eddie background from 1965 Munsters Magazine: He was born under a full moon in Transylvania. He moved with his parents to the Okefenokee Swamp area where he tamed and made a pet out of Spot who was stuck in quicksand.
Love that! So he IS a vampire/werewolf hybrid
Great video!! Thanks for all the hard work!!
I met Butch Patrick once. He's a really nice guy.
You make some of the best videos...
Keep up the good work.👍
A multitude of thanks!
I've been wondering about this for awhile and I appreciate you sharing your insights!
A couple of years back there was a car show in New Orleans which featured Butch Patrick and a replica of Lilly's model T not the horse that she had converted into a family car.
Werewolves can carry a family curse as well. There can be a lot of factors.
You really are a good detective!! Great explanation!
Thank you so much!
As a cartoonist, I illustrated one cartoon that explains it: Eddie was picked out from a litter of werewolves and was adopted.
Very cool discovery Rick.
Wow, my dad always sad how was he a wolf. You put it together with amazing! I have to show him this video.
Thank you! I’m sure you dad will love it
On the subject of genetics, I had pet mice when I was a kid, and when they had a litter, out of the six children, two would look like the father, two like the mother, and one each like a grandparent (usually)
I grew up in the 60s watching these shows. At the time NOBODY cared about these details. We just enjoyed watching them.
I love these kinds of theories! Please don't stop!!! I don't remember this episode, though.
So glad you like them!
@@ricknineg you said lily was (the son) when you could of said the daughter of Dracula.
I don't remember this episode of the Munsters. But I do remember the Munster movie, "Munster, go home!" In it, Grandpa accidentally turned wolf. And in the same movie, Grandpa mentions being hung as a horse thief in a former life. To me explains a lot. Of course, Herman being Frankenstein with many parts. Makes sense. Eddie also has a werewolf doll too in that movie. Called Wolfie. Liked this series a lot also. Interesting facts. Thanks, Rick. Take care.
I do.
I enjoy The Munsters. I just recently bought the complete set. I learned so much from this clip. Thank you.
Do you also remember the episode called "Grandpa's Call of the Wild" where Grandpa turns himself into a "wolf" and has trouble turning back into a human type body?
Ha!! I love it when you delve in and figure something out. I never put two and two together. I always tried to figure out their daughter. Ha!!
Well that clears that up. Spot-on! Now, would you be so kind and look into how can Marilyn's last name be Munster?
In the both pilots Lilly/Phoebe and Herman are yet again lamenting poor Marilyn's appearance. Herman tells Lilly...
"Don't look at me. She's your sister's kid. No one on my side of the family ever looked like that." This exchange is also repeated in Munster Go Home.
First to post!!!! I always thought he was a vampire!!....
He was a vampire who got bitten by a werewolf
I remember an episode where Eddie was being babysat, he was Howling at the moon first, and later when the Babysitter calls upstairs for Eddie to go to bed, you hear a coffin lid closing.
I have always thought that Eddie may have been adopted.
There was an episode where an uncle who came from Brazil to visit the Munsters turned out to be the Creature From The Black Lagoon. Because the show was a Universal production, and they owned the rights to the Universal monsters, they used them to comedic effect than fright.
Great video! I've seen every episode of The Munsters and I do remember Lester making his appearance in the episode "Herman's Rival".
Now while your theory could be true, how do Uncle Gilbert aka "The Creature Ftom The Black Lagoon" and the 50 foot corset in the attic that Grandpa eludes to as belonging to his wife, fit in to Eddie's bloodline? (Actually Grandpa was married quite a lot, so maybe that one shouldn't count.) Plus the movie Munster's Revenge based on the original tv cast, featured a cameo from the Bride of Frankenstein claiming to be Herman's sister.
If you were to try to create a Munster family tree, based on just the original show alone and not the movies or remakes, you would definitely need a lot of research time, but then again, it would make an interesting video. :)
Regardless, thank you for everything you do. I'm
still in awe of everything you accomplish!
1] 'grandpa's wife is appearntly dead.
Well obviously, so is grandpa, given that is what vampires are.
2] the other reason edde is part wolf, is due to Grandpa being dracula
as in the 'original book' (stoker) drac didnt turninto a bat, but a wolf instead. and actualy referd to the crys of the wolf pack as "the music of (his) children"
a referance made in the Munsters Movie when there s a scene of him being 'snuck' into england in that form
Love the video, keep up the good work
RIP: Phoebe Munster. She's the best.
In early episodes when Herman has his hands shown close up the backs of his hands are covered in hair. His doctor (when he doesn’t have his glasses on) shakes Herman’s hand and mistakes him for having a dog inside the doctors office. Oddly enough most of the rest of the time Herman’s hands look normal so it was probably just used early on for comedic effect.
I did always wonder that thank you
My fave episode of the Munsters is when Herman went on a diet to fit into his old uniform and his neighbors were eating Thanksgiving dinner and he busted through their door. 😂
the simplest answer, the script said he was.
But there’s a logic to it. That’s most important
Thanks for the facts.
I always wondered why Eddie is a werewolf.
I’m so glad I can help answer that for you
They couldn't show where Herman by Grandpa's suggestion have that talk to Eddie... you know about "the bats and the bees '. That episode came to an end.
Never heard of Lester until today! I guess that’s an episode that I missed.
Gratz! You solved this, too.
Runs on Lily side. Grandpa turned into a wolf on the camping trip.
That all makes sense and I thought that's how he could be a werewolf, since Uncle Lester is a werewolf, genes are strong.
I have been watching the segments on CZcams. I used to watch the TV show. One of my favourites.
Very good deduction .
What he didn't mention is that in Munsters Go Home is that Grandpa changed into a wolf.
I have a nephew who looks more like his uncle than his father. In fact, he did an opening monolog on SNL that in this one shot he looked exactly like my brother.
Don't remember the details of the family connections but there was also a lagoon creature (same suit from the movies) and an invisible man in that family tree.
Of course there is the simple answer: The producers of the show wanted to have each one of the famous Hollywood monsters represented on the show. I know, boring - but probably the correct answer.
Would love to see you do a video on Car 54 where are you. Wasn't there an episode where Fred Gwinn played his usual character and a non Munster character.
I remember that episode.. that's some good detective work...I was huge Munsters fan
Thank you!
Don't forget, Herman was made from SEVERAL DIFFERENT people and sources. A man of many parts.
I know I am kinda late but I will say in the episode 100th anniversary you can get a quick glance of Lilly’s mother when grandpa is flipping through a book of pictures
Yes, I always figured that Grandma Dracula was a werewolf. I also imagine that Lilly's sister married a human. Don't recall if they both died and Marilyn went to live with her surviving relatives or if she's their charge.
When your high AF and start thinking about random things that didn't make sense.
Lilly has the Werewolf gene, comes from her father's "Grandpa" line.
I loved this show when I was a kid Grandpa was my favorite character.
I actually have seen this episode (funny!), and came to the same conclusion you did about Eddie.
There is no werewolf gene. Werewolves aren't BORN, werewolves are MADE. So Eddie was probably born a vampire, but was bitten by a werewolf, so now he's a werewolf! I remember Butch Patrick joking about not being sure if he was werewolf or vampire.
I see what you’re saying. But if you’re bitten, it’s in your blood...the “werewolf blood” or disease....lupine, it may be called is mixed in with your blood. One has a kid as you pass that on would be logical genetic situation.
@@ricknineg No, it's dna in your genes that you pass along. If a person got a transfusion, that wouldn't effect their "bloodline" (bad joke). He always did have that vampire hairline...but I haven't seen the old werewolf films, so I'm not sure how much he looks like one. I had no idea the Munsters was so complicated, but now you've got me thinking! You mean...like passing on a virus to your baby? Could be, yes
@@ricknineg I just got a reply to a comment I had made about a murder...Guess who made the original comment? Herman Munster!! (cue Twilight Zone theme)
Interesting explanation, always love how you explain the questions that people always wonder about on these shows that seem illogical, Rick. Then again how do you explain Munster Uncle Gilbert from the episode Love Comes to Mockingbird Heights, who looks like the Creature From The Black Lagoon. How in the world does this gill creature fit in the Munster bloodline?
I smell a possibly future episode
I know this is the popular interpretation but as kid, I never thought of him as anything but a little vampire. I don't think they ever said he was a werewolf, did they?
I remember when Eddie's Woof-Woof was crying bcuz Grandpa or Herman went missing. Fuckin' hilarious!!
Everyone thinks it was Mr. and Mrs. Brady who were the first TV couple to sleep in the same bed. It was really Herman and Lily Munster!
Darn ! Darn! Darn! I'd forgotten that episode. Thanks for bringing it to mind. (Good month for Munster posts). I was really young when I saw it, and like Marylin (not to mention how she changes from Beverly Owen, into Pat Priest) who seems to have different DNA, I'd just blindly accepted the different leaves on their family tree. Thanks for finding and connecting the dots Rick!
So if lily's mom is a werewolf,... Doesn't that mean grampa is into beastiality??!
To be a good historian, it’s important not just to know facts, but to understand the time period in which they took place. During the 60’s and particularly with the fantasy shows, very little attention was paid to continuity. This is long before series bibles or canon was considered. The production simply had the roster of Universal Monsters they were able to use and they did so without much thought of what made sense. Often these decisions were arbitrary or made to suit a joke or the weekly plot. It’s fun to try and make sense of some of the episodes today and try and piece to together a consistent narrative but the fact was, little attention was paid to that kind of detail. Remember, Grandpa not only could change into a bat but a werewolf too.
That make sense about Eddie thanks
I do recall Lester Dracula being a werewolf
Absolutely
Also Lily Munsters mother was suppose to be werewolf. Lily just took after her father.
And also there’s another cousin of the Munsters who is The Creature From the Black Lagoon, remember. So they have other genes incorporated within the family. Grandpas wife is never seen because she’s dead. Grandpas wife was surely werewolf, or werewolf/vampiric . Maybe even werewolf/creature black lagoon species. We don’t know
But if looking locally on this of course it is possible for Eddie to be part werewolf.
Herman,Johann, and con-man Charlie all came out of the Frankenstein lab
This analysis was hilarious just like the original show. Great work.
I appreciate that! These are the type of vids I make on here, glad you like them!
I totally forgot about Lester! Maybe because Eddie is still a kid, he has yet to grow into the “hairy werewolf” phase?!
Always wondered the reasoning of how Eddie came to be a werewolf encouraged to bite his nails. Marilyn of course was a gorgeous site to behold by everyone but her family who were sympathetic to her affliction of being homely and likely to be an old maid by her family standards. Continually scaring away her dates when Uncle herman the romantic that he is tries to greet her dates at the he door before the goodnight kiss.
Hi Rick.....Never gave it a thought until tonight when you talked about Eddie being werewolf. I know every episode like the back of my hand Rick. Belong to the fan club. Thank You Rick..... Be positive!😊
Herman had hairy werewolf hands in early episodes.
So why is Marilyn called Marilyn Munster when she is actually lily's niece not Herman's Niece?
She was “adopted” into the Munster family
She was adopted into the Munster family
@@ricknineg I think in one remake episode of the Munsters, is that Marilyn's father was Doc. Jaykle . Can't remember the mother.
See, thing is, people forget or don't know the true lore, or history of vampires... they are also shapeshifters that more commonly know can shift into a bat, but they are also known to turn into wolves... hence, vampires always were also werewolves... 👍😎👍
Interesting 🧐
I never bought that Frankenstein is made up of many body parts from different people. The reason is because of tissue rejection.
Dracula can turn into a wolf. In Bramstoker's Dracula he turned into a werewolf while feeding on Lucy.
There is always the possibility Herman has some Werewolf in him. He was made of different parts & maybe he has a wooley willie
Honestly, I believe that Grandma is possibly the 50 Foot Woman, because in the episode where Herman needs to lose weight to fit in his army uniform, grandpa walks near a manikin that looks like someone for a big tall woman. That’s just my theory.
As soon as I saw the name of this video, I thought of this episode. I agree, Eddie takes after his uncle.
I love the Munsters, brings back childhood memories! Who cares if he was a bat or a wolf!! 😂👍🐺🦇
Wouldn't that make Eddie a werewolfpire??? 😄 Sure would be interesting when Eddie hit puberty! 😅
I always loved when they had a "special guest star" on the show, that was yet ANOTHER Universal Monster!
