At the age of 103, not only is today’s guest the oldest I’ve ever welcomed onto my podcast, but she’s also the oldest returning guest, too!
Dr Gladys McGarey is the co-founder of the American Holistic Medical Association and the author of the fantastic book ‘The Well-Lived Life: A 103-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age.’ She began her medical practice at a time when women couldn’t even own their own bank accounts, and over the past sixty years, she’s pioneered a new way of thinking about disease and health that’s transformed the way we imagine health care and self-care around the world.
In this wonderful and uplifting conversation, and with her trademark humour and compassion, Gladys offers profound insights on living with purpose, navigating adversity and finding healing within ourselves.
We explore how to avoid living with regrets, the importance of parents truly listening to and supporting their children and finding your unique purpose that ‘feeds your soul’. We also look at how we can bring a more positive attitude to negative experiences and how Gladys lives by what she calls her "5 Ls" - life, love, laughter, labour and listening.
Still thriving at 103, she embodies staying curious, adaptable and active. During our conversation, she shares her views on ageing, believing in ‘ageing into health’ rather than ‘anti-ageing.’ She also stresses the importance of doctors listening to - and loving - their patients but that it’s ultimately us who are responsible for our own healing.
Gladys’s century of life experiences has something to offer everyone. Her wisdom will inspire you to reflect on your own purpose, face life's challenges with resilience and make the most of the years ahead.
It was an honour to speak to Gladys again and have such a deep and honest conversation with her. I hope you enjoy listening to her as much as I did. Her playfulness, humour, and can-do attitude remind us that it's never too late to learn, grow and make a positive impact on the world around us.

So true❤
😊😊
Perfect statement! ❤️💕💜🫶🏻
I found my voice when I was 93 ❤❤❤
❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏾🙏🏾
Proud of you never too late as far as I am concerned for anyone to learn anything not right time or wrong time say same about myself 😊 I'm 72 & that's what I love about getting older only need few knocks in life makes one stronger more confident, soon start to learn. Keep standing up for ourselves & anyone else I say 😅
Wait: "I'd had my 99th birthday and I was shopping at the grocery store and taking them to my car, and an elderly gentleman came..."???
30 seconds in and I'm hooked. 99, shopping, driving and viewing an 86yr old as elderly?! Fan-bloody-tastic! 😂 👏
The wisdom of elders is seen as a treasure in every part of the world. This is what we lack in the West. We have lost the connection with the elders.
This country does not value elderly in fact "elderly" starts at around 65 years.
True. The only valued people in our vacuous society are those who are celebs, rich or young and beautiful.
Not in my family AND not in the families of any one I know actually. The world is what we make it. Everyone is not the same, there are always exceptions to everything. Many many many people “in the West” Do know the Elders are treasures of wisdom. It depends on the “culture” of each individual family household. If they are taught to respect the elders they Will Do it as they grow into adults. So if by “the West” you mean the U.S. . . We are not all the same in this Country. ❤️
You, Doctor, are as inspiring as Gladys. You show such respect to the people you interview, especially in the way that you intently listen to them. You are so polite and so obviously deeply deeply compassionate. Doctor, in the truest and most noble sense of the word, is most certainly your calling. Thank you for all that you do. People like you make this world a much better place.
This is such an inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing her story.
I went home and we went to the cemetery. Ther was a shiny new black headstone with a suitcase engraved (white. So it stood out on the background). I had to go over and look. It was a lady who was over 100 yr old. (centenarian).
As I got closer, I read the writing above the engraved suitcase (literally, a huge suitcase with a handle) . It said,
“GO, GRANNY, GO”!!
Probably 30years later, I still remember that moment.
I wished I could have had a conversation with her. Mostly, I realized her life was fulfilled and well spent. How many of us can say that?
She calls her walker “Skywalker”. Legendary woman 🙏🏻 Pure life wisdom from Gladys throughout the episode. She’s such a kind and positive person ⭐️
Wow. Laughter without love is cruel.
Also her hair is gorgeous.
It's a wig , a hair piece that sits on top...like a hat.
Adorable is it it ?
I dont regret my yesterdays ... They made me who I am today.
Namasté 💜
She is the Grandma of this century! What an amazing positive woman. I miss my amazing, strong Grandmas, who fixed their men at their place.
Please interview prof Margaret Clark, she lives in Birmingham uk and is still publishing research on education at the age is 98.
As somebody who reached 60 in January and is definitely changing her life purpose, this woman has provided a blueprint for my own aging into health journey. I treasure people with such capacity to live and prosper. Thank you for this Dr. Chatterjee.
It is such a gift to learn the wisdom from our elders. This interview was priceless. I personally feel blessed to have watched and garnered the lessons❤

Little things are the big things in life!❤
This woman is a treasure.
All I can say is WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!!
That was cute when she said when her little grandkid touched her neck and she was "thrilled". Physical closeness and touch can be so powerful. Good thing that we have this whole virtual reality like FaceTime, videocalls, but a tight chest to chest hug with a loved one is definitely one of the best feeling. Personal contact is the "real thing". I also agree with that on paper you can seem healthy, your blood test can be perfect, but if your soul is lonely or you don't get the love you want, then you are not that fully healthy...The 5 L: love life laughing listening labour, I would highlight the laugh. VERY VERY important to find some humour even in our darkest days...a good joyful belly laugh everyday with a loved one can definitely increase our happiness level, plus it absolutely makes us feel alive. It's wise to be responsible, but don't always take life too seriously, sometimes we win, sometimes we fail, and it's okay, we have to learn to laugh at ourselves.
I absolutely love the wisdom of our seasoned loves. A blessed life of over 100 years is worthy of a description greater than "elder."
Glaydis advice of Love, connection, Laughter & care is inspirational. I love the story about the Dr who gives everyone a cuddle.. what a beautiful gesture of connection and warmth when a person comes for help, in their moment in need. Also love the 5L’s.. thank you to you both.. 👍🏻😘👏👏👏

What, a Wonderful beautiful Lady. Takes, your breath away with all her words of wisdom. So, amazing with such a great sense of humour. Take Care. 🌹
This is a wonderful episode. 47:20 - 48:50+ sums up a lot of what I think we-humanity-tend to lack within our intellectualism.
Amazing! Thank you❤❤❤

The crux of all religions are the same .. yet we fight for one is better than the other .. at 19:06 mins when she says humans have free will to choose… it’s so true .. there is a saying in Hindu texts which translates to .. every human is free to act the way he wants that’s your choice but the consequences of it is not you choice .. this is the crux of karma .. universe will always remember your good or bad choices made to serve this nature .. you cannot run away from the consequences of the action you have taken .. that’s the force the mother goddess of Shakti ,the universe

Pastor Bea always said soon one life will be past!!! And only what’s done for Christ will last!!
Love is the healer
Excellent woman
amazing!
The problem with us having freedom of choice is that there are people living in slavery. For example: in some countries women are held prisoner by their father, unable to even leave the house. They are then sold basically into a forced marriage to another man, who then becomes their slave master
Why is that a problem? You are not the cause of that suffering & you don't have to let it spoil YOUR freedom. The fact that such suffering exists doesn't invalidate any of the lessons we can learn from this terrific lady. We are just really fortunate that we have more freedom than those poor women.
Awesome content Awesome humans thanks, love to live live to ❤️ love🙏✨️
I have taught ballet 38 years in my ballet academy. I am 65 and completely trained, I have to stop because girls and families change change their minds every day, that is the new Era, change and change . I cannot teach ballet in that way anymore. 😢
A word from a prophet given to me. God sees how much you do. It’s ok to be tired.
"Listening without love is empty sound" not sure I understood that? When one listens he doesn’t speak in the first place..
It was a nice interview with a lovely person, unfortunately, it was not too easy for me to understand exactly what Gladys was talking about, although I still got any overall positive gist..
Perhaps she meant that if we listen with our ears tuned for understanding and relating, we are listening with love. Without that, it is just hearing sounds.
Wonderful. Thx so
much for having Gladys on your podcast, Dr. Chatterjee
I feel like I have a lot of her similar characteristics. 😊
Needed this. Thank you. Heavenly Father please continue to protect me and my sons. As a single mother God has carried me. Both of my sons are special needs. I’m overwhelmed because I’m struggling to provide the necessities for my sons like food and clothing and I struggle to pay rent each and every single month yet my struggles have brought me closer to Jesus. I know he will get me through this hard time in Jesus name.❤️
In other words. Heaven is with in you, now let it shine forth...
I loved listening to this amazing lady, thank you for having her on.
God gave us all 120 years to live and considers a child at 100 years old when they pass it’s amazing so we must be toddlers ha ha ha
Anyone wrote summary yet?
❤
Well according to stats for Slough, I've got 23 years left
You are a greater interviewer but I think there's some opportunities to comment on her great stories instead of simply moving to the next question 51:30
