If people missed it, the Russian helicopter pilot who defected was murdered in Spain...

Agree. I have a serious problem with conscription or mobilization or whatever name people want to call it. No leader or politician owns your body or your very life to enrich their legacy in the history books. I have always believed that if a cause is just, the fighters will come. If a cause is unjust, the fighters will be forced against their will.

I think the grammar on the last text is a bit funny. Maybe something like, "This is the story of Tashkent Breakfast Club, a community where Russians and Ukrainians regularly meet in an attempt to fix what has been broken." Not sure if there should be a comma after 'meet'. It's probably optional, but others may disagree.
I think, for a better understanding of this sentence, there is just a little (,) missing:
