I think there's a few different electric cars which have basically a back-up gas powered electric generator. I know my uncle's electric car has that in it. In order to save weight, the generator uses a fairly small motor, and the top speed while running off of generator power is much lower (like only around 60km/h) than when you're running off of full battery power. So I guess it's like a hybrid between a normal hybrid and a normal electric car. If you ever see an electric vehicle only going 60km/h on the highway (around 40mph), it's probably because they're running off of the backup generator. Having a backup generator makes it way more versatile, but it reduces the efficiency of the battery because it adds weight. Then again, I wouldn't really want to use an electric car for traveling long distances in the first place, unless I knew for a fact that there were plenty of easily accessible charging stations everywhere along the routes I need to take. In the long run, you would save money by having a gas powered car to only use for long-distance trips when the electric car would be less practical, but the most advanced electric cars can go a lot further in-between charges, and they'll continue to improve. Many countries are planning to completely switch to electric powered cars, building all the needed infrastructure to make it work even for long-distance traveling.

It was only recently that auto makers began to see that electric motors are the best way to increase performance at the low-end, and Tesla came along and began making some of the first EV’s that weren’t ugly, tinker toys made for urban citizens who could charge it up all the time. I actually prepped Joe Rogan’s Tesla Model S P100D in Costa Mesa CA. I didn’t even know it was his car till someone told me towards the end of my prep. Super happy that he loves it!
I own a Model 3 and it's amazing. I've driven the P85 and still prefer my 3 for how tight the steering is and them dropping the instrument panel. If I had it to do over, I would have gotten the 3 Performance, even though it would have stretched the finances a bit. I may still end up trading in my current for it. The car is like nothing else (for now). People need to experience it to appreciate the differences.
Tires have nothing to do with lightning protection. It's the skin effect of the metal surrounding you. The charge goes right through your tires into the ground.
Agreed, people just dont know. Rubber doesnt do dick unless its on your skin. Electricity only hurts you if it goes through your body. And if lighting hits your car. The fastest way to ground is through the metal and through the tires. If you stand up through your sun roof, stick your hand up in the air while touching your metal car, and lighting hiits you. Your tires will do absolute dick. Goodbye

That "fuel option" thing is called "range extender" and it's available on BMW i3 previously. It's meant to reduce the range anxiety for some i3 owners since i3 has a pathetic 80 miles of range. Tesla doesn't need a "range extender" as it already has the best range among all available EVs you can buy "today".
I'm sure you already got this info Joe, but just in case: 1. You can charge your car off off sunshine and it's best to do it via a Tesla Powerwall battery (store power during the day and charge the car at night). Sure you won't get a full charge in one day, but it is possible and probably even sufficient for most daily commutes. 2. You can pair that up with an inductive charging plate (like Plugless Power) installed on your garage floor and a reciever under the car. Like, if you really don't like to work the plug... ;o) Much love!

HyperChange TV Nice to see you here, buddy.
LOL this is such a troll comment :D
Joe mistaking wireless charging of an electric car to lightning !! Lol. Literally bro science.
"Induction? you mean like air intakes?"
@@Skwisgar2322 lol good one
Yeah, I think it's just because of the urban myth that lightning can't strike your car, actually it CAN strike it, like a plane, but cars and planes are, by design, Faraday cages, so even if it's hit by a lightning, the electricity will stay on the outside of the vehicle
@@rodolpheschott2913 Yes, you are correct, if you think about it, that lightning bolt just traveled through several miles of air, how is a 2-6" air gap between the car and road going to stop it?
@@Skwisgar2322 exactly, it's just a urban myth, plus you actually don't want the car to be completely isolated, because if it was, you'll die at the second you get out of it, since the electric charge would stay on the body of the car and you'll become the "grounding circuit" at the second your feet touches the floor
I used to work at Honda and saw many NSX. They are truly amazing
im gunna miss you jamie, !!!! bahahahaa. thank you for all the great laughs, i hope there is still some presence on this platform to help you guy bring people forward. i only figured this podcast thing out 2 years ago and so miuch learnin has been done and lots of eye openin chats, stay safe and take care. good luck going forward.

When you're NOT a car guy -- AT ALL. 08:34 "Those look like gamer seats." 🤣🤣🤣

"That could literally be a new 9/11"
As someone who isnt a car person that too me off guard 😂
Joe "I have used the word preposterous like a million times" Rogan
What's crazy is Joe Rogan Doesn't Know How wireless Charging works
He also doesn't know what spoiler alert means
He has a iPhone. Still very new to him.
Electricity is faster than gas, always has been, always will be
THE REAL KING FRANCES at launch yes
joeyno137
You might want to take a look at radio controlled cars, this is where the technology comes from. From the batteries and the engines.. there was a point where nitro/gas cars were fast, but with advancements in battery technology and brushless motors gas can’t compete.
Quicker in general, yes, but NOT faster.
No try again
Idk, nothing like the sound of a v8,but im sure a big block chevy will reck any electric car
They have wireless charging roads in Sweden they're testing. Its induction charging (magnets) no contact needed
..."because I drive like a MORON!"...LOL
Joe Passive Aggressive Rogan
3:25 chill bro ideas that aren’t yours can be cool
I wouldn't even say passive tbh, Joe was coming off pretty dickish to the other guy.
@Hostbusters XL yeah but its easy to tell when someone isnt very comfortable speaking to a person. Rogan was clearly bullying the dude
Hostbusters XL I marked the time stamp in the original comment
Joe "I know my shit when it comes to electric cars'' Rogan
Boom roasted
The car he's thinking of was the "Fisker Karma".
I actually prepped Joe Rogan’s Tesla Model S P100D in Costa Mesa CA. I didn’t even know it was his car till someone told me towards the end of my prep. Super happy that he loves it!
3:45 wrong, the rubber tires are not the reason for protection against electricity. It is the Ferriday Cage
Thank you. This bothered me a lot.
@@Bestfriend-650 No, it's used to store Schrodinger's cat
Its faraday cage bro..
@@Bestfriend-650 I know right...
I love when I don't get struck by lightning.
1:10 "It doesn't seem right" how he says it with genuine concern in his voice has me fuckin dying hahahahahh
Joe “old man from the 80s” Rogan
Tires have nothing to do with lightning protection. It's the skin effect of the metal surrounding you. The charge goes right through your tires into the ground.
Look up Farady maybe, derp...
@@tomasotreasaigh111 No man, it's the skin effect haha
Agreed, people just dont know. Rubber doesnt do dick unless its on your skin. Electricity only hurts you if it goes through your body. And if lighting hits your car. The fastest way to ground is through the metal and through the tires. If you stand up through your sun roof, stick your hand up in the air while touching your metal car, and lighting hiits you. Your tires will do absolute dick. Goodbye
@@tomasotreasaigh111 Lightning travels through miles of air. It gives two shits about an inch of rubber. It might sooner travel through the air around the tire instead, but your metal car is too enticing a target to pass up because of a little rubber or a little more air.
The car acts as a Faraday cage.

What Tesla model is the best? Tesla S or Model 3?
got to drive a model 3 with all the bells and whistles, 0-60 3.2 seconds... it made my arms tingle, it was amazing, like nothing I have ever driven before.
Induction charger, Joe! Induction!
If you have ever been in P100D in ludicrous mode. It's everything Joe is saying it is.
Even a 75D is the insane. P100D is just nuts
Yeah for a 0-60, once past that it will lose.
Because it has a battery, and lots of torque. Do y’all know anything
Been in a P90D and can confirm

The Tesla SUV raced a Lotus Elise while pulling a different Lotus Elise on a trailer and still spanked it in the quarter mile. smh I need a Tesla
Joe Rogan is owning this guy left and right ahahahahah.
8:30 that was such a concealed smackdown 😂
Rented a Tesla for a whole week recently and it wasn’t even the p100d and he’s completely right other cars just feel stupid and it just feels like the future. Already told myself once the battery tech reaches past 500miles I have to get one
Why's Joe talking cars to a guy with an IQ under 50
Exactly
Chevy volt?
MrRamirez ToYou it has like a 9 gallon tank and it comes standard
Because neither of them actually know anything other than they go fast
I think he was thinking of the diesel hybrid maybe. Those are more dope in my opinion
Underestimating + overlooking = underlooking

The electric car with that gas is the bmw i3
jacobknapp. photography jacobknapp. photography can’t imagine how much that costs. Worst car I’ve bought to date is an old BMW. Maintenance is insane on beamers. Never again.
Mish mash I mean it is an electric car, most of the new ones aren’t as bad
that I8 is slow though gapped one on the freeway with bolt on mods. the NSx is much faster
My roommate used to be a BMW salesman. He bought his parents an i3 and let me drive it one day, they are ridiculously fast. 0-60 in like 4 seconds.
@@vettebro7004 You're thinking of a hybrid, the i3 is the tiny cube looking one that's a lot slower but fully electric with a short range.
Every time Brian is on the podcast, it’s like Joe is the guest - bri is only asking questions
That’s cause joe has conversions not interviews and asking questions is just how redban is

I bet he got a huge discount though. Elon knows he'll make good advertisement for Tesla.
He did cost him like 20 million or some shit. Least he could do.
It was Joe's most viewed podcast ever. I think that deserves a favor returned.
They’ve had wireless charging for electric range rovers in the U.K. it’s induction charging for garages.
just like the cell phones
Sadly a good (great) comment has flown over the heads of most who've read it.
My compliments, regardless!
ya we also have that tech here in the US Joe is just an Idiot...seriously this guy will go home tonight and place his rubber cased cell phone on a rubber cordless charging mat and not even realize it or put 2 and 2 together
Жак Морозов are you too stupid to realize it’s not about me, I don’t have an electric car but I’m smart enough to know how much better it would be to drive over a conduction ring to wireless charge my car versus using a cord that can be tripped over. On that note you stupid hypocrite, does your remote have a wire on it? What a lazy fuck, must be from Russia where morons drive and park on sidewalks.
Junior Balls thank you a hundred fold
They already have those charging mats in Sweden so when you drive the high way your el-car charges
Fun fact it isn’t the rubber tires that protect you from lightning it’s the car itself being more conductive than humans
I'm sure you already got this info Joe, but just in case:
Like, if you really don't like to work the plug... ;o)
Much love!
These two guys just dont click, they just dont link up when talking. Im surprised that Joe supposedly wanted him to stay. And Brian is sort of a downer when with Joe, not to mention Joe is really patronizing and overbearing to him. Its like Brian is bird chriping in the background and Joe is yadayadayada ,"yea Brian sure", yahahadadaya
Brian used to be on the podcast literally all the time. You've obviously not been a fan for very long.
Both of them had supras when they were younger damn i wish
The idea of driving in to your garage and there is something on the floor like a docking station for a phone is feasible. Could be a magnet activated plate that lifts up from the floor and touches a charging plate under the car and the car stops when in position. That would be legit...
to make it "wireless charging" would be absolutely infeasible though
@@colossalbreacker there is a company that developed an in floor induction EV charger. I think they are working with Nissan? It was getting only 10% loss with a 6 inch distance between the car and floor inductors.
"Is there a fuel option"? Come on dude..
Ever heard of an APU?
I'm pretty sure that he is talking about the Chevy Volt which does use a small gas tank to run a small engine charger to give the battery extra range.

It's interesting that the cost of that Roadster at $250,000 is the same price Elon Musk wants customers to pay for a ride on his Starship to go to Mars in 8-10 years.
So?
The idea is that with rocket reusability and a refinery on mars the costs per person will dramatically decrease over time, there are ways of extracting the type of fuel they will use you should watch elons presentation on this
I would love to go on Mars but 1- they would have to launch outside the USA, 2- I'm such an asshole that I don't know if I'll make it past 2019. 3- I can't overlook the fact that once I'm on my way to Mars, they might come up with a rule that says that all the criminals that make it to Mars will stay there for life. That's how my family populated "Canada" back then. Learn from history. 🤣🤣🤣
If you think we are living on Mars in elon's life time you're dumber than the people who buy Tesla's
