  • This is episode 2 of the Idol Chat with Harry Metcalfe from Harry's Garage. Following on from the biographical 'brown chairs' Harry Metcalfe takes Jonny Smith on a tour of Harry's Garage. Despite never working with him, Harry and Jonny have known one another within the car mag and TV industry for a while now. He's always been just as approachable and enthusiastic as you see him in his Harry's Garage videos, and offered to be a victim of the chairs over a year ago now.
    Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
    Thank you to Harry for letting us bring the chairs along to the barn. His (car and farm) channels can be found here:

    My old man had a Z1300 when I was a little kid in a small town in south eastern Australia... It was blue with gold accents and THE coolest bike in town hands down.
    He was the boss at the big tannery, one of the biggest employers in town and I'll never forget him picking me up from school on the big Kwakka... I thought my dad was literally a superhero and so did all my friends. It was fun having a cool dad and he was the coolest dad and an even cooler grandpa.

    Motor trade from 1980 to the present, with a couple of years farming early on……. still living in and around farming in the South East………… Harry, a man after my own heart…. 🙂
    You both share a similar uncompromising love for vehicles, regardless of their monetary value…… the quirkier the better in my book……. my cars are a mishmash, Trabant, Skoda, Alfa, Volvo, G Wagon and Citroen…… trucks, IVECO, Mercedes (Unimog) and bikes, referred to as the donkey sanctuary……. my current favourite is a battered early Varadero XL1000V……. with Black Widow cans…… all the attitude of a Paris Dakar bike, but weighing the same as a Range Rover, on road tyres…… 😳

    I know you're into EV restomods Jonny, but Harry makes a very valid point: if you're using a coal- or gas-fired grid to charge, it, where's the benefit of an EV? Making lightweight cars (and bikes) whose parts can be recycled without too much energy expenditure ought to be the priority.

    • @parsot
      @parsot Před 2 lety

      Unfortunately Harry's wrong on this though, at least in the UK. On a good day my EV emits 20gCO2/km and the average for the year is 40gCO2/km (UK average electricity mix is about 45% from gas/hydrocarbon). It replaced a 2016 Fiesta ST which produced 125gCO2/km, so even with today's every mix it's a 75% improvement.
      What we need is both a shift to EV and continued move towards clean electricity.

I have ridden them both in later years and yes the motors are smooth and silky but the handle like a drunk pig on stilettos on an ice rink and take the same amount of time to stop as a fully loaded super tanker. Great vid Jonny, ably abetted by Harry. Lots of great ideas put out there, especially that Rolla with a knock-out colour job.

    Top man, one of the easiest enthusiasts to listen to, so down to earth. It didn't get a mention, but nice to see he has Kawasaki triple in his collection too, just like Maverick :)

    Really enjoyed the video. Thank you! A shame the audio was so quiet overall and occasionally spiked very loud in certain sections. But brilliant overall

    Two of the best, together at last. So easy to watch these two gents, relaxing and fun. Just shows that you don’t need the latest, most radical Lamborghini that “I’ve just ordered!!!!” to entertain. Great pair of videos Jonny 🙂🤙🏻

    12:00 The sound those inline 6 bikes makes is simply staggering. They're insanely good sounding. A CBX etc with a nice set of pipes...good lord
