  • Lotus has taken weight out of the Evora, and added a bit more power in to the mix. Is it an improvement over the 400? Alex Goy went to Lotus' HQ in Hethel, Norfolk, to find out.

    I'm still not bowled over by the revised styling of the latest Evora, it seems a bit busy to me. But, that said, the attractiveness of the lighter weight, improved build quality, and added power (as well as improved handling) is undeniable. Oh, and I enjoy Alex immensely as a presenter; easily my favorite out there.

  • @GranDaddo
    @GranDaddo Před 7 lety +6

    Lotus should ditch 400, 410 nomenclature and adapt something more "personal" and historic connected to their roots. For example, and dont mind how bad it is, Lotus Evora 77 etc. 410 is simply not giving enough credit to show how exactly special or different it is. Not to mention you do not know with what you would compare it with. With Porsche RS or GTS... It needs to have own Aperta, own GT3 RS. Not 310, 320, 330...2nd Esprit does not need to be much bigger than Evora, hence redesign and using modified chasis might be quick win3rd Needs to utilize all modern hi-tech to reach out to wider range of people. Infotainment does not need to mean 40kg ekstra, but it would bring them closer to civilisation. Combine that with little work on shocks and you could have Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde easily.4th Toyota deal might be revisited and maybe they can get some newer engines. Like 3.4 L RV8KLM

Evora 400 then 410, now 430. What's next? Evora 440? Exige 440? If just concerning the engine power and torque, I think what Lotus doing is just remapping the ECU, as the engine, supercharger are same, right?

    They should have left the Exige naturally aspirated in V6 trim. I have no problem with the concept of a V6 Exige, but since it's supercharged and making similar power to the Evora, this otherwise brilliant car seems rather pointless in the context of the Sport 380.

  • @nonyabusinesss3025
    @nonyabusinesss3025 Před 7 lety

    Love Lotus too, however, they'd step up their game making their own engines. Toyota may have much reason to use their power plants, I can't help but think that Lotus designing their own motors from scratch, they would not only save weight, they'd also be better. Toyota is too "standard" and Lotus IS better.
    I envision a "Lotus" engine having more power per cubic inch, better mileage, and a purpose built Lotus "heart" could be engineered to accept more boost. They could still compete with Toyota/Honda when it comes to practicality, for the most part. They could use direct injection, forged internals and you would require smaller displacement for similar power (higher compression, more boost) and a smaller fuel tank cause direct injection is the best.
    Tangent territory, but, engineering different cam profiles or boost options and/or final drive ratios would make Lotus customers leap for joy with a hard on. Plus an engine ready to accept five or six hundred horsepower would be a good selling point. That would justify the carbon fiber, a Toyota engine doesn't seem to in my humble opinion. (Haven't researched it though). Food for thought Lotus.
    The Evora Sport 410 seems amazing too, nice improvements. Hard to imagine a better design.

    • @yaxleader
      @yaxleader Před 6 lety +1

      Do you know how much it costs to develop your own engine as a car manufacturer? It would bankrupt Lotus twice over to do something like that. And even their F1 cars ran engines sourced from other manufacturers. Also, Lotus cars aren't designed for massive amounts of horsepower unless they can add it without losing their handling performance. Handling and weight are the #1 concerns for Lotus. Get the engine too big and you lose handling performance and control and would make their car like every other Lambo, Ferrari, or McClarren out there and lose the Lotus touch

    • @justarandomstickminwithaha6984
      @justarandomstickminwithaha6984 Před 7 lety

      Supercharger.It's borrowed the power of engine to make more power.But it's a shame lotus didn't put the turbocharger which create more power by it's self rather than borrowing the power of engine.
      Turbocharger created a lot more power than the supercharger.But it's difficult to put,remove and maintain while supercharger make easier to put,remove and maintain.
      If lotus put turbocharger in this car maybe the top speed can accede or reach 200mph and hit 60mph a bit faster and then the car will fully 100% supercar in these days.

    • @gustinn3509
      @gustinn3509 Před 7 lety

      No.
      The supercharger is how they got the increase of horsepower from the old Evora to the Evora 400..

    But you've been doing this 'increments' and variants of the same for years now. How about a proper STATEMENT. Looks like Aston will beat them to the punch (with all the RB cash to burn) with a real game-changer. Easier said than done, I know! But there exists now a void that the new NSX didn't fill, and Ferrari and Porsche have altogether abandoned, just waiting for Lotus to claim/own/dominate = the NA MT RWD mid-engine lightweight sportscar.

      The problem is, Lotus's development budget is puny in comparison to other car companies. They probably are working on a new concept car, but can't do it very fast due to lack of personnel and money

      You can probably bet that the next generation Camry will adopt a platform that is AWD compatible. And judging by the spyshots recently (showing quad exhaust tips), it might be safe to say they are also testing more performance oriented versions to battle the Fusion Sport and other German midsize sedans.

    Only 410 bhp from a supercharged 3.5L V6...? Surely they can get a lot more out of it!
    Or dump it for a 2-2.5L 4 cylinder turbo and save even more weight!

    • @JonasRosenven
      @JonasRosenven Před 7 lety +6

      Of course they can get more out of it. Deciding on how much hp to extract from an engine is always a matter of balancing how much it will increase the cost of the car and how it will impact the reliability of the engine.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP Před 7 lety +2

      Lotus' philosophy is more about harmony between driver and car with emphasis on weight savings. This Evora already has a massive advantage in weight over many other sports cars. Take for example the Corvette. No one complains about its V8 making 460hp, and yet this Lotus has a better power to weight ratio (weighing nearly 400lbs less than a standard Z51, or over 500 versus the Grand Sport). It's even about 50lbs lighter than the new 718 Cayman S, and produces 60 more horsepower. So why say "only 410" when it's already beating some of the best in the business as far as numbers go?

    To be honest, I wanted to make fun of this car. No, I'm not bothered that it has a old Camry engine.
    I just hate it when car companies follow this simple recipe : Adds 5 or 10 bhp, removes a little weight, and jack up the price.
    Which, yes, in this case does help the Evora somewhat better for track purposes, I guess.
    Anyway, usually I get bored of this stuff, but for some reason, I'm turned on by this.
