  • The Lotus Evora Review: The Lotus Evora is the forgotten supercar. Without a big parent company to provide the funds, the Evora was built on a shoestring but punches up there with the best of them.

    Toyota has been racing for many decades, no need for anyone to disparage that engine. Especially when reliability is factored in. Great review!

      It was such a smart move to use that Toyota engine. Completely unburstable, plenty left in it for more power without compromising reliability, parts are easy to find. Brilliant engine and it sounds fantastic!

    Excellent, balanced review of what the 400's place is in the pantheon of desirable cars. I think you hit every high point. My 400 is a manual but everything you said about the auto translates well to the standard gearbox. A few other comments follow. The Evora gets better than expected fuel economy at typical cruising speeds. Which is to say it's even economical when it comes to fuel use. Don't tip into the throttle too much and you can expect over 30 MPG on US freeways And it's easy on other consumables like tires and brakes. The Evora is far more practical than people who haven't experienced it might imagine. Plus, it's tight and rattle free as anything in the class. It gives an owner the confidence to go anywhere, anytime.
    You mentioned the best feature for a driver which is that the car feels great at any speed. When it comes to feel, Lotus leads the market and build absolutely superior cars in general. The Evora is no exception. You can't drive this car without smiling. I'm really just echoing what you've said but the Evora is simply more fun and just as practical day to day as anything near it in price. Thanks again for a fine review. You nailed the car.

      Thanks so much for watching, I'm very pleased you enjoyed it. Interesting to hear about the fuel economy, it's not something we worried about (and when filming, you don't get accurate readings anyway). Make sure you subscribe, there's more Lotus soon.

      great review ......its so nice to watch a video made by a genuine enthusiast of this manufacturer. I’m a lotus nutcase ; have been ever since i started to regularly attend race meetings at my all time favourite track Brands Hatch in kent ......... those were the days in the 50’s and 60’s when you could drive straight onto South Bank and watch proceedings from your car. unlike the over complicated cars presently. operating in F1 . I my top ten all time favourite models being (in no particular order )
      23B, 25, 47, 72 and 79
      the original Elan, the Mk.2 SE engined LCortina, L Carlton , the much maligned Front wheel drive elan with the itzusu engine and the
      EvoraS in my view the best looking car of all time . I’m consistently frustrated, nay pissed off with the long-standing love affair that seemingly all motorising mags have with all things porche keep spreading the word

    I just bought a ‘17 Evora 400 (with the manual transmission) with the SAME color combo!
    I have to say your review is spot on. My last car was an Aston Martin Vantage, and while the Vantage was the most beautiful car I’ve owned, it pales in comparison to this when it comes to how it feels to drive. The 400 puts a smile on my face at every corner regardless of speed.

    • @TheRedlinedotcom
      @TheRedlinedotcom  Před 3 lety

      Hey Jerry! I'm so jealous. I'd love to have an Evora on the drive. I think the real key to it is that while the Aston is indeed beautiful - plenty of cars do look better than the Evora - the purity that comes from tossing out all the heavy luxury. It's such a great thing. Enjoy it!

      Hi Matthew, good to see you again! I've wanted to drive one of these for years (and an Elise review is coming soon). I think with a bit of Geely money and Volvo attention, the interior could come up to scratch and it's still a thoroughly modern supercar. A few more horses and a better transmission, bam. Done. Terrific thing, I loved driving it.

      Hi John. Thanks so much for watching. Glad you love your Evora. We reckon more people would if they knew it existed!

    • @jaldeborgh
      @jaldeborgh Před 6 lety +2

      The Redline: It’s interesting, buying a performance car like a Lotus or Porsche is an introspective process because it reveals something about our inner self. It’s often a reflection of who we believe we are. In my case I started out thinking I wanted a 911 but with an arbitrary budget of ~$100K (US) I quickly found out I was limited to a ‘lesser’ Porsche, which I knew would leave me wanting. Then I stumbled onto the Evora 400 and discovered that ‘not’ owning a ‘Porsche’ might be more emotionally rewarding and pure fun than owning one. At this point I would say I made the right decision, for me at least.

    • @TheRedlinedotcom
      @TheRedlinedotcom  Před 6 lety +1

      That’s a very interesting perspective. I think Lotus’ biggest problem is there’s no money for marketing and people are (stupidly, in my opinion) put off by bits of the interior. But it’s just so good to drive everywhere. And a lot more interesting than a Porsche from all angles.

    • @jaldeborgh
      @jaldeborgh Před 6 lety +4

      I think you are exactly correct about the purity of Lotus. Yesterday, the first day I could get my Evora 400 out of my driveway since before Christmas, due to the snow and cold weather we're experiencing here in New England this winter. I just took it for a 90 minute drive, no destination, just the pure joy of going for a drive, on some back roads, in -10C weather. I'm 61 years old, and I can't remember the last I just went for a drive on a January day. It's speaks volumes as to why this is a special car. As for Geeley, I also hope you are correct. The last thing Lotus needs is another "conquer the world" strategy, like what Bahar and his band of lunatics were trying the sell the world. Lotus needs to keep working the strategy they are now on and just stay close to the Lotus DNA, "simplify and then add lightness"; and please don't try and make Lotus into a "SuperCar" or "HyperCar" company. The world needs an alternative to the Porsche Boxster/Cayman and 911 range, if they are smart, Lotus can make that happen

    • @TheRedlinedotcom
      @TheRedlinedotcom  Před 6 lety

      I reckon if they look at the Alpine A110 and the Alfa 4C, then for the harder stuff cars like the McLaren 570S, that's the direction - carbon tub, keep it simple, keep it light and above all, make sure it's fun. Doesn't have to be super-fast - the Elise 220, which we've shot, is brilliant without being a complete nutter.
      I'm so pleased you find the car as versatile and user-friendly as I did. Were you on winter tyres in that weather?

    So true the comparison with other sports and super ars that may be better at some points, but then cost 3-4-5 times more...
    PS I'm not a Toyota fan, but I think for a small brand as Lotus it is a very good option, to have a quality and reliable engine under the bonnet...but is it sporty enough? From which Toyota model does this 3.5 V6 come from?

    • @TheRedlinedotcom
      @TheRedlinedotcom  Před 6 lety +2

      Lotus has always used other people's engines - the early Elises used a Rover K-Series and over the years there have been many Ford-derived engines, not just in Lotus cars but in Caterhams too. There are lots of bits on the Elise bought from the big manufacturers (Lotus was part of GM for while, hence lots of Opel bits) and I'd say Toyota is an easy company to work with. The V6 is a 2GR-FE, so it's in lots of things, mostly US market Avalons, Camrys and the Highlander/Kluger pair. Bulletproof. In Toyotas they're under-stressed but throw on a supercharger and hoo-boy. Up she goes. Thanks again for your kind words and your continued support!

    • @TheRedlinedotcom
      @TheRedlinedotcom  Před 4 lety +1

      Oooh, that's a tougher one. It depends what you're after. The Elise might be tricky as a daily driver as entry and egress is not a simple process like it is in the Evora. The Elise 250 is brilliant (check out theredline.com.au/tag/lotus for all the Lotuses) but not a car that would be easy to live with. If it's a car you want to use to blow out the cobwebs, perfect! Having said that, people claim the Elise is good daily, but you'd have to speak to them about that. The Evora is fast, comfortable and a weapon on the track - the supercharged V6 is really great - but it's also really comfortable and easy to live with.

      @TheRedlinedotcom  Před 6 lety +1

      I would have loved to have got on it a bit more, but our roads are *very* heavily policed and/or crowded, so it's proving difficult to do. But we're trying! Those seats are pretty silly and just weigh the car down.
      The reason Toyota is your least favourite is because they're so dull and dependable. That engine sounded amazing. We're better at getting engine sounds now ;-)
      Thanks again for watching! And there's going to be heaps of BMW content on the way in the next couple of months, here and on theredline.com.au

    • @BimmerTV
      @BimmerTV Před 6 lety

      They are dependable and dull! They are the worst to drive, throttle response is terrible, hard to be steady. No power to speak of and here in the states the seats are made for overweight people so they're terribly uncomfortable for folks like you and me. I will never own a Toyota but I would own a Lotus with a Toyota engine. Then again, probably not, because Bimmers ;)

      It's got pretty close to super car-like performance but best of all, it doesn't have the supercar running costs. We have lots of our owners doing regular track days, targa rallies and other motorsport all year round, with many of them using their car as a daily driver too. Due to the low weights and reliable Toyota derived mechanicals they don't chew up brake pads, discs, hubs, bearings, transmissions etc etc.

      Hi Glenmiester - thanks so much for watching and paying such careful attention. In Australia, the lightest (standard) Porsche 911 is 1390kg (kerb weight), which is about 10kg heavier than the Evora, depending on where you look and which spec. A 718 Boxster is around 1330kg, which is getting on for 60kg lighter. The Evora I drove is probably the heaviest at 1380kg, a manual is considerably lighter...Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, hope to see you around the comments elsewhere. Always happy for people to pull me up where I'm wrong :-)

      Going by Wiki if it can be believed, and I suspect they quote dry weights
      Porsche 1,420 kg (3,130 lb) for the GT3 RS and the Carrera 1,435 kg (3,164 lb) manual or Auto??
      Evora 400 is 1,248 kg Manual (2,751 lb)-1,442 kg
      Auto (3,179 lb)

      Hello Dennis, thanks so much for watching. As you may or may not be aware, there isn't always a choice of transmission, so we get what we're given and we do the best we can. I was surprised at how good it was, but cant' wait to get my hands on the manual 430. Make sure you subscribe to CZcams and keep an eye on the website for that one.

      Hello again - as you might have worked out through the rest of the video, I didn't care it was a Toyota engine - in fact, I was quite happy about it.

    Why cant lotus give that engine lotus engineered guts like pistons, rods, crank. Give it some British and lotus heart. People are greatly patriotic. Patriotism comes from the heart. Lotus are robbing their selves, foolish.

      Put it this way people want to know that lotus has held it with there iconic and magical hands

      Use Toyota switchgear and hardware, damn even get them to engineer the dash and ergonomics, make it a new Toyota/BMW supra, put their fibreglass on it, use Toyota to engineer your own interior design, make love to their Camry engine. I'm talking pistons, rods, balanced crank. Larger throttle body, over the top engineered shifter like the one in that very rare Elise 250, throaty muffler, sports cat, manifold, all lotus engineered and stamps with the badge.
      Seriously how expensive is gold leaf? Utilise it like the McLaren f1, it may not have the same performance effect but damn sure would turn this to a talking point in media across the globe. Get people talking about you, is what I'm saying. You have the name, you have the the history and heritage that could rival Aston Martin. As a business they really need to stop thinking the way they do. Typical British attitude. I'm British so don't hate, I can say that! Lol

      Oh as of Brexit, keep it all assembled in Britain, create trade. Show your up for business with the likes of Japan etc. The chance is their lotus, just wish they'd take a gulp and go for it. Just like Aston Martin did in the early naughties.

      Hey there! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. You're right , it's a lot of money in Australia, but does have some charms a 911 doesn't. But that doesn't sell cars :-D
