      I work in IT. Many times great ideas come from those with lesser titles but it's ignored because having good ideas isn't considered part of their title.@@janvi2816

      @@janvi2816it means that the best ideas govern not a chain of command. But that’s ironic and oxymoronic because u intrinsically can’t have no comities and have the best ideas govern decision making if heir not a hierarchy because every business, that produces anything, with rules and regulations such as the rules of engagement, is by definition a hierarchy. So I don’t know why he said that. I mean it’s apple and he said there is only 1 person selected out of each group who controls each subsection of the company which is literally a monarchy by definition and it by definition can’t run correctly if the monarch isn’t making decisions for the group, which he said they do. There could be a healthy discourse of ideas that they then run with and even the monarch in charge could change but it’s still a monarchy and a hierarchy for its structure, which then means the monarch has the final say on what to do no matter how good the ideas of argument are, they still have more power. And idk what that last guy who responded to you said about word salad. it’s not. It’s literally two words, I guess the iq is really at an all time low. It’s how a blue print for how to run a successful business.

      companies do know this... but once you get big enough the structure becomes stiff... creative people are bogged down by bureaucracy or they get shut down by HR for being too shy etc.... people get angry not being notified and so on and so on.... tons of reasons... you have to have some sort of autocratic solution, democracy in corporations doesn work

It takes a certain amount of honesty and self-reflection to say that as a leader. It's not about being right, sometimes it's about allowing others the opportunity to even risk being wrong.

    I once worked for a Tech company with this mindset, the atmosphere in the place was amazing, never experienced it again anywhere. So many employers don't have a clue.

    I had a chance to be a fly on the wall in a Steve meeting over an engineering issue with the iMac. The meeting got quite loud. People argued their sides passionately. I could see how this could be exhausting for someone who either wasn’t prepared or didn’t have a good grasp of their side of the argument. But I could see how someone could feel like they got run over in that setting. In the end I think the decision was the right one.
    My favorite thing about working for Apple was the incredibly smart people working there. I mean wicked smart men & women. No, I don’t count myself amount them. Every day I felt I had to elevate my mental game just to keep up. I wish everyone could work at a place like that once in their career. As for Steve my favorite quote about him is from an early Apple employee. “ He was the best boss I ever had and the worst boss I ever had.”

      Do you mind shedding some light on the specifics of the argument? Nothing too specific ofc if you're not allowed.
      Was it related to the capabilities of individual components? ex. CPU GPU MOBO setup battery life etc.
      Was it related to the engineering and functionality of the operating system?
      The manufacturing?
      Would love to know very curious

      The iMac was supposed to be the first Apple computer without a fan. Steve hated the noise a fan made. He held the same opinion about laptops as well. A lot of effort was spent on finding quite fans. But he demanded a no fan models.
      The iMac was designed like a chimney to vent heat out of the top. But a fan was still required in the first model. It was designed to only come on in certain situations. In the main iMac team meeting an engineer suggested the handle on top might get too hot to touch. That kicked off the experiment I was asked to setup. The test lab I managed setup a worst case scenario so folks could see how hot the top got. Right after they saw the test the group got into a discussion about the issue. Steve lead the discussion.

      By the way, I ran a series of fan experiments in an Apple sound lab. The lab was setup like a professional music studio. I didn’t even know Apple had a sound lab. The fellow running the lab told me Stanley Jordan, jazz guitarist, recorded the original boot chime in that lab.

      Mspec 507 The keyboard group was a separate group from my test lab much like the display group. I don’t know if they did any such testing. We did do reliability testing on the keyboards, mice, and touch pads and the engineer from our group would work with them and the project team on issues we found. We were focused more on long term mechanical reliability & new materials.

    Steve was telling the truth here. Fun fact: he actually wanted to name the first major computer Mac Man because of his love for Sony and their success with the Walk Man. His marketing team talked him out of it and they ultimately named it iMac. The i stands for many things. Internet, individual, independent, etc. but it was also a vision for future products that would all have the i such as the iPod, iPad, and the iPhone. He’s right. You must always let the best ideas win. You never know where it will take you.

      I think the reason it sells well is due to the psychology of the culture being individualistic and the product itself aimed as individual use and personalization its a no brainer why perhaps the subliminal of the "i" infront of the product works so well. I dont think it stands for internet because the original ipods were just music players.

There are a lot "i" product come out after iMac like iBook, iDVD, iMovie, etc. Those came out before iPod. It's just basically being the Apple's brand without any meaning. The "i" itself become the brand not the abbreviation

      @@devaraft What do you think of my idea of the iTomb where a camera is installed inside your dead loved ones' coffin and you can watch their corpse rot into a skeleton over the years while having two way audio as well so you dont even need to visit the grave site you can just watch them on your phone or pc if you dont have time.

I think there are some ideas that should never be explored and theres a reason why people die. I dont think any technology or advancement that is based on cheating nature or fear of loss is anything good for humanity.

    Steve Jobs was unique in the sense that he was not driven by hierarchy. So many managers are authoritarian and power-based. He allowed his staff to bring their abilities to the table in unique ways thus empowering them to be their best. In return, Apple thrived. Much like John Maxwell, he understood the power of his people.

      And today more companies are understanding this approach and integrating things like Agile ways of working which largely does away with hierarchical ways of working (while still functioning within the wider hierarchy of the business) - people have a greater freedom to be inquisitive, upskill, ask questions, and collaborate across projects and teams, irrespective of their title/rank. This way of functioning can be transplanted to work in society-at-large, and we are seeing this too in startups and small businesses growing to meet niche demands.
      It's not perfect, and it's highly dependent of self-interest, but it is a start in the right direction.

      In a sense you copy paste what Steve Jobs said , without own thoughts. The point of Steve Jobs wasnt to reject hierarchy, but to shift hierarchy to the spot where it counts: to the ideas. He made a hierarchy of ideas, when he said: the BEST idea have to win. THATS a hierarchy right there. Its only not a hirarchy of authority. Thats the point. Its very important to understand that , and not copy paste and believe ''its so true, because its sounds so great, and hey, its Steve Jobs!'' ... Its important to think pragmatic - espescially when it comes to technology.

Presuming they were true, some may argue so what; he was always focused on recognising the best people with the brightest ideas and discarding those who insisted on being there out of longevity previleges. Which sounds romantic at the beginning, but this sort of mentality is exactly why the Gen Z people have a 5 second attention span. People can create smartphones but what is the ultimate objective? It's advancement of human ideology which surprisingly has gone the other way. You see people with their heads down browsing through their phones while something serious is happening to someone right next to them.

    Steve Jobs was a man who shaped lives, who created new careers, who helped young & old creative people CREATE better and outstanding work, a man who had a vision that very a few human being from this century had the privilege to have and share with the world, Steve Jobs was more than softwares, laptops or phones, he was a visionary, a paradigm breaker, he was the kind of human being that was smart enough to know that we are born to follow our bliss, create and share.     That’s the key...good to excellent teamwork at the top of a company. I’ve seen a lot of times upper executives are siloed in their area and only worry about “their area” without understanding you have to worry about the company so you have to help one another and work together.
    It is amazing how this attitude filters down to the rest of the employees even if they don’t know it is happening.

    I used to work for another phone company. Someday I came up with really good ideas about improving apps and performance overall... My manager read them all and start laughing. 1 year later another company made the ideas posible and they worked really well. Sadly all companies are run by hierarchy.

      hierarchy is protected by HR. For example the "360 degree retaliation system" they use prevents talented people from being promoted, as mediocre people slander all talented people to protect their own careers.

    I worked with a guy like that same mindset for 10 years out of Minnesota he was a general manager his team was just as Steve Jobs described I was a strong producer and loved my work of course last I heard he was a CFO for a large company.

    Steve Jobs is THE LEGEND and ive always been inspired by him to do something in life. hes been a big part of my life and a big part of the tech revolution all over the world. in fact i put in a lot of effort to make a channel where i try to put up almost all the things he has thought people. so that i can inspire others and keep him alive in some form

    Hi, I am Deanna I take Steve Woodland online class for Business Management at HCC. I really like this video touching on his company not having a committee. He also stated that if you want to hire great people, you would have to let them contribute their own ideas. This is very important because employees like to work for companies who would listen to the ideas they have.

      Jack Ponissi iPad sales are not going down- in Apple’s most recent quarter, iPad revenue shot up 31%. The tablet market is congested, but a dominant player (like Apple) can always command more share. What’s incredible about Apple is their ability to consistently expand margins AND revenue simultaneously; they raise prices, add tech, and people still buy. Also today’s iPads are not identical to now-6-year-old iPads. 6-year-old iPads are extremely slow and laggy by today’s standards, and a key driver for tablet demand today is the interface of handwriting (something older iPads cannot do), where the Apple Pencil serves as another differentiator to iPads of yesteryear. Then there’s Face ID, more stable security chips, and better cameras (with LIDAR). China is also a huge growth segment for iPad today! All of this means that the iPad probably isn’t going away anytime soon until growth and profitability plateau

    The most important think he said was that he meets with every team to gather ideas. It means that even if you are at the bottom of the chain you can share your ideas with the CEO. So if this guy likes your idea, you don't care about some careerist manager thinking how to benefit best from this idea.

    While I generally dislike both Jobs and Apples, these are pretty good teachings for any company that wants to be successful over time.

      @Jack Dawson Yup, my company gives us the latest iPhones (XR currently), so I've been using them for the past 3 years. Aside from the camera which is fantastic, iPhones and Apple software in general are dramatically inferior to Android. And more expensive.

      @@emanuelbogdan8451 I own both Android and iPhone for 3 years now: Android is for personal use, while iPhone is the work phone given by my company (but I use it all the time for photos). Apple products are not bad, actually they are usually damn good, and the camera is among the best ones around!!!
      The reasons I dislike Apple products are mainly three: (1) They are way overpriced for the hardware they offer, compared to any Android competitors. You can find mid-range Android phones with comparable power that cost 1/3 of an iPhone. (2) Apple treats their customers like babies, making choices in their place. The "battery-gate" that happened few years ago is a prime example of their mentality on the matter. (3) Brand segregation: Apple makes sure that switching from Apple products to anything else will be a nightmare. Also did you know that they made it impossible to repair iPhones outside from their centers? So they can charge whatever they want, with zero competition.
      If you are cool with spending a lot more than average, letting Apple decide what is best for you, and accept their prices whatever happens... then sure, iPhones are great products! But not for me. There are literally TENS of Android phones that I would buy before I would even consider an iPhone.

      @@TheDarkever yeah i know that they may not have the hardware, but they still manage to work buttery smooth because of the hardware implementation.
      About the move with the repair, i totally agree with you, it s a pretty bad move by them, but i still like their products. Much simpler and they age well compared to androids

    Steve Jobs is both praised and questioned over his leadership style. This short video is a great reminder to owners and CEO's wanting to grow their business through employing good people. Part of a great interview at a time when Steve was not well.

    Mistake is when the boss ignores everything and tries to apply an automatic solution for everything .
    You cant apply the same solition to every single place.

    Remember: when they bring you a prototype they're extremely proud of and have been working on for months, if it's a couple millimeters thicker than you like, chuck it in your office fish tank. That will motivate them.

    This way of thinking & managing people was perfected at Apple at one time under Steve (IMO this is really what he should be known for besides his sales skills) - It's just really unfortunate that the consumer bar is now so low for what's considered "innovation" these days... that most of it is just gimmicks.

    Steve, you are sorely missed. You left us too early. In 2'26'' you just gave us a fantastic lecture on how to successfully run a company. That's why the giants like Boeing, Lockheed, GM and so on have been leapfrogged by SpaceX and Tesla in such a short time. I bet Steve convinced our Lord to ditch his PC stuff for cool Apple products.

    He spent all day meeting with teams of people solving problems and coming up with ideas. What we used to call a committee. He just didn’t call them committees.

    Ah man I hope all my ex-‘bosses’ could hear this and learn from it. Good people will always leave your side if you run a business by hierarchy and ego, chasing money on its own is the easiest trap you can fall for. Pay extra attention to recruitment and listen to your crew!

    This startup I was working for let people run their own ideas but never facilitate the meetings or help newcomers get to know the business and encourage them speak up. They only hire family and friends. those who been there longer know the product better and speak up more. The new ones are clueless and have to catch up themselves and barely speak. I quit after 4 months. Steve got great points .

    There was a lot of accountability at SJ’s Apple. Like he said, there was 1-person in charge of X. That person was representing their whole org in those leadership meetings. So you had executives very plugged into the work of their teams. Most businesses the executives are detached from the day-to-day and make strategic decisions from their own little bubbles.

    Interviewer has no idea, he's assuming Steve controls everything when Steve is doing the perfect job letting people help solve problems ... that's all it's about. This is the problem with big companies.. too many conservative people running the show and not allowing customer problems to be solved.
