In a time of gaming dominated by colorful and cartoonie games, one game stood out as a dark contradiction - Castlevania. In the early days of NES the horror genre was almost non-existent, a genre that is now nearly unavoidable. In today's episode, Egoraptor and I are discussing this classic adventure platformer and the tremendous influence it has had on games of our day.

The game also has been made into a show on Netflix. Season 2 has just came out and it’s great. Love this show, it’s story, it’s characters and it’s animation. Can’t wait for the next season.

It's so sad that both series Metroid and Castlevania are nearly dead, both are my favourite game series, and I'm so happy when I saw Metroid Prime 4 and Samus Returns on the E3 2017. Please Konami don't be an idiot and bring back Castlevania in the old 2D formula from Symphony of the Night

man, I *love Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness* (and I can say that the first one really feels like and old platforming game since most of the time it is just your whip and subweapons, and it is to me in top3 most "tetric/terror" Castlevanias )

+geraq You're certainly not wrong. I speak as someone who has never played any Castlevania games and has only experienced them vicariously through video clips.
Elijah Foltz you should definitely play them! You are not going to regret it. The anime is based of CV III for NES, which is one of the older platformers, but borrows aesthetics and backstory from Symphony of the Night for PS1, the first of the "metroidvanias" and considered the best by many. You can't go wrong with the GBA titles or the NDS titles either. Older games are tougher, but they are all awesome!
+geraq I've already watched the first season of the anime, and I'm hyped for season 2 around Halloween this year. I knew it was based on Dracula's Curse, and I was really intrigued when they explained exactly why Dracula was so pissed at humanity. Honestly, if someone murdered my lover, I'd be just as angry as Dracula was.
That reminds me: Are you familiar with a website called Nitrome? It's a site with a crap-ton of cute little pixel games, one of which I played quite a few times a few years back. It's called Tiny Castle, and it seems to work a little like a Metroidvania-style game. The screen doesn't scroll like in a Metroidvania-style game, though; it only stays in the same square screen, but the environment changes pretty quickly. If you don't know it, give it a try. Elijah Foltz oh, yes, I'm also very hyped for season 2. I can hardly wait. I appreciate the character development they did for both Dracula and Trevor, something CV III didn't do for obvious reasons. Not many titles develop Dracula as a character, SotN goes the farthest. His motivations usually range from wanting to enslave humanity, to punish it for its crimes, to cleanse the world and start over. I also appreciate the connection established between CV III and SotN, which is something Konami didn't do in over 20 years.
No, I haven't heard of Nitrome but I'm definitely checking it out! I'm a huge fan of pixel art games (try Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, it is awesome!). Thanks for the tip!

Wow! Thank you for this video because I'm a big Smash bros fan but I knew almost nothing about Castlevania and now I'm glad to know a little bit more this historical series of gaming history. I really started as a early/mid 2000s player.

Bro the lords of shadow part of the franchise is my personal favorite. It adds some depth to the story and watching Gabriels journy is verry satisfying

Inigmian Studios I agree, LoS is a very gorgeous game and it is very fun to play. The OST could have been better but it is not bad. The story is mostly okay but the ending is truly horrendous. I personally enjoyed MoF due to its tragic take on the Belmont's family, I think it was a good attempt at bring the LoS universe closer to the original continuity, controversies aside. It was a nice mixture of the LoS and classic gamplay styles. I haven't play LoS 2 but it seems to be a complete trainwreck, both storywise and gameplaywise.
geraq the story of LoS 2 is Alittle interesting, but the Gameplay is as clean and flowing as ever. I'd recommend it, if your a fan of the first game
I saw a lot of reviews for that game, and they all agreed that the exploration aspect felt forced, the parkour platforming was uninteresting, and that the stealth sections were a pain in the ass. I enjoyed the combat system from LoS 1, but I heard that in LoS 2 you feel underpowered the whole time and fights get repetitive very fast. So, if the story is uninteresting and the aesthetics are unappealing (the modern day setting at least), I would expect the gameplay to be astounding at least, but I heard it is not the case. I might however give it a chance someday, thanks for the advice.

Simon Quest was my fav one growing up. I must have beaten that game a few dozen times.
I was already playing Castlevania when metroidvania Simon's Quest came out and I was all over it! Still playing today my friends! I quite dig Lament Of Innocence as well - it's relaxing. Can't comprehend peeps not liking Mirror Of Fate.

I basically grew up with Akatsuki no Minuet, so I never really played the traditional CastleVania games until later, but I honestly think that Chi no Rondo and Harmony of Despair are my favorite games.

Castlevania Aria of Sorrow is by far my favorite Castlevania game 😊 call me old school but as a kid I loved everything about it; the music, the boss fights and characters (Soma 💙) such a classic game ☺️
