The late parents of a friend of my mother's owned a candle shop and they sold candles that had little metal necklace hangers in them, so when they melted you would get a little prize. They also made a white skull that drips red wax when lit.

The German thing is an Adventskranz. We lit candles on Advent. The 4 Sundays before christmas are 1. Advent (1 candle burning) 2. Advent (2 candles burning) 3. Advent (3 candles) and 4. Advent (4 candles) if you lit the 5. candle you forgot christmas.
