I was at that game and thought about that lack of response. Domi was straightened out by Messier after the incident against Buffalo, while still a Ranger (at that game, too). He learned something about respecting the game and the opposition. After he left, he was missed. Ulf came to the Rangers with his reputation and was rumored to not be liked by Moose and a number of others on the Rangers. I guess this is a multi-step algebraic equation.
It doesn't matter that was assault straight up and dirty as hell.. he could have had serious life long problems from that. He was defenseless and that's where I have problem with that... that was as cowardly as it gets.. period . I Kno it was a different time in hockey then and a lot of stuff was borderline criminal but that was as ugly and bad as I've ever seen and has no place in sports period
@@AnthonyDangelo-ey6dwyou say that, but I don’t think you’re considering the other possible outcomes and ripples here.. Do you think Ulf learned anything from this? Yes it was harsh, but one benefit of that harshness was that he wouldn’t just be forgetting it. And therefore, how many guys careers did Domi potentially save by teaching him this valuable lesson? Even if it’s one, you have to give it to Domi because Ulf brought it on himself by being known for being so dirty. In fact, Domi may have saved Ulf himself from an even worse fate. Maybe someone eventually slashes him in the eye or bashes his knee to bits and he never plays again. Again, yes it was harsh; but that harshness also lends itself to the notion that he would not be punished again by someone else. Once this happened, who was gonna take a cheap shot at Ulf for his dirty playing unless he did something after this? Nobody. So yeah you wanna look at the harshness of this, sure that’s fair. But you have to also consider the positive consequences of that harshness and evaluate the whole thing together rather than just saying “violence is bad” and then moving on. You know no offence but it reminds me of how moms deal with kids fighting; “I don’t care who started it, you don’t hit anyone!” But it matters who started it.. If someone knows they can cheap shot you and never get punished for it; why would they ever stop?

Once Burke became executive of the NHL discipline he had to play politics with bettman. Blah blah blah Betcha bottom dollar behind closed doors he agrees with everything Don cherry says here.
Life-Long Bob Probert and RedWings fan here since the 80s.....and I'm sorry, but I applaud Tie Domi for this one. Woo Hoo. ULF was a dirty, dirty nasty player. I wish Probert or Kocur would've taken care of him. Now I want Max Domi on the Wings.
Absolutely. I would love to see someone like Joe Kocur ,Darren McCarty or good ole Bob Probert, (God rest his soul) take out a dirtbag like Brad Marchand nowadays!!
That is a lie. The fact of the matter is Neely did not miss a single game in that series and played another 5 years before he eventually retired following the 1995-96 season.
Don Cherry the best thing ever happened to Hockey! 🤷 Sorry , not sorry . Pansy ass cancel culture got the best of him, its too bad . Samuelson was the definition of dirt and Domi just happened to be Karma that day .
Samuelsson was a cheap shot artist and i'm shocked considering the reputation Brian Burke had for keeping tough guys in the lineup (Colton Orr) longer than any other HNL GM that he would defend Ulfie.I watched a lot of hockey over the years and played UK Junior for a good while, everything Samuelgoon got he deserved IMO.
Burke had a history with Ulf....I can't remember whether he was the GM of Hartford then or whether he was Ulf's agent.....but they did have a history and Burke will always defend people he has a history with...he defended Brashear before Marty clubbed him. And Brashear was behaving like an ass prior to that.
If Ulf Samuelson had not been wearing a helmet, he probably would have been killed and Tie Domi likely would have faced second degree murder charges. And if Samuelson hadn't been wearing a helmet and died, the NHL probably would've had to go out of business because the sport's public image would have taken that much of a negative hit. Many college, high-school, junior and youth hockey teams might also have ceased to exist, again, because people wouldn't want a sport to exist where a player killed a rival player by a sucker punch.
Cherry I agree loved to hear himself talk more than he loved hockey players...dude ripped on so many hockey players and he wasn’t even good enough to make the nhl, but he was right in this clip. Samuelson was a bad seed type player
