  • In Todays Chronicle I'm doing some foraging for Wild Persimmons. These grow wild throughout Indiana, and many people enjoy harvesting them to make persimmon pudding. Everything from tree identification, how to determine if a persimmon is ripe, how to process them once they're picked.... its all covered in this video!

    If they are black or nasty looking they are ready to eat.
    Use your drill press to smash blend them. Like a blender with ofset washers on a piece of all thread.
    Use your fastest speed.
    If your blending cup has a windows creen bottom only the good stuff vibrates through the screen into a bottom clear glass cup/jar.

    You gather now, not after a good frost? I've wasted so much fruit, waiting on that frost... Pudding must be amazing!

      I’ll post a follow up talking about it. It’s seriously one of the best desserts you can make. Look up the book “ the perfect persimmon” it was written by my moms best friend lol

    Awesome video! I'm new to the American Persimmon world, as the property I recently purchased has 4 lovely trees that are bearing fruit. Quick question...milling seems to be done to remove the skins and seeds, but since the skins are edible (and healthy), why wouldn't you want to keep them as part of the final product? Put another way, why not just remove the seeds and keep the rest? Thanks for any insight you can provide, and keep up the great videos!

      Thanks Eric! The reason we process them like this is to save time. We could cut the pits out individually with a knife, but that would take a long long time!

      @@CountryBoyChronicle So I am now in the process of milling...basically pushing them through a large-holed colander with a spoon and spatula. It's tedious work, but seems to be coming along. Definitely will be considering a mill...but not sure yet.
      First recipe I made was 1/3 cup pulp, 1/3 cup whole oats, pinch of cinnamon. Mixed by hand and formed a patty...put in an air fryer for 10 minutes at 350 (no preheat). Made a pretty tasty cake. Had an astringent bite or two (small price to pay for a 3-ingredient, whole food snack), and I will probably go for 8 minutes next time. Got the inspiration from a guy who mixed persimmons with ground acorns for an ash cake.

    Is it possible to use the fruit and vegetable attachment for the kitchen aid to separate the pulp from the fruit? I was wondering if the seed are too big for that?

    We do chestnuts or star fruits. Boil and bake.

      I mash the pulp out with an old school "potato ricer" then mix in cinnamon and or pumpkin pie spice mix and dry in sheet pans to make persimmon fruit leather.

      @@CountryBoyChronicle spread the pulp thin on wax paper and put in a dehydrator if you have one or oven 130 degrees or so. It will take several hours. Once firm and dry and cool cut into strips with a knife or my fav. A pizza cutter. Persimmon also mixes good with apple sauce I found. The dried product will last a good while.

    Put a net around the bottom of the tree and tie a rope to the tree and shake it the tree gently the ripe ones fall off.👍👍✌👊👊

      @@CountryBoyChronicle I take it you havent read your messages for awhile Mate as I put that message up 8 months ago and your just answering me now.😂😂😂 Why don't you'se use the seeds to grow more mate.I find it easier to put the seeds into toilet roll and wet it then keep them in the house near some heat mate but don't let the toilet roll dry out if you do it that way they will root quicker then instead of using soil make a water troff to feed the roots and use organic feed this way they grow quicker you wait till you get atleast a 3cm tree then move them to soil and keep them inside a building thats warm if you do this you will have a good hardy plant after two months or when its planting season put them into the ground and use a good clear tarpolin for the first year this will give you a good harvest from them for years.👍👍✌👊👊

    Almost CANT be to ripe. It’s more if a bunch of dirt is stuck to it. The riper the better. If you can easily handle them and not get gooey, bitter.

    I got 11 trees in the Kansas City area but the fruit has that astringent pucker effect.
    How do I eliminate that?

      My advice is wait until they are soft and ripe! Hard ones taste like crap

      stick em in the freezer, the freezing causes the astringency to go down

      I asked an old lady what's this?
      She said, that's a green persimmon. Take a big old bite, they're real good.
      What a bitch! What a rotten thing to do to a five year old!
      I wouldn't eat anything green for years, afraid it was going to make me pucker again.
      For those that don't know, green persimmons taste terrible

    Can you not grow some new tree's at your place then you will have your own tree's plus more fresh oxygen from the tree's.👍👍✌👊👊
