Top had to come off anyway to access the hydraulic pistons that need rebuilding. Never buy an exotic convertible. Nightmare.

They went to all that trouble and expense of manufacturing beautiful aluminium fuel tanks that basically no owner is ever going to see under the engine bay plastics, only to save 20c on materials for the pumps and have them burn the car down. Thats some real Business 101 shit right there!

Italian business is extremely nepotic, so the shitty pumps are probably from a close friend or relation of whoever was making the decisions. Also probably why they kept using them for years and years despite knowing they were a serious hazard.
@Freiherr Dinckelacker Never said they were Italian, just that as is often the Italian way, they might have been supplied by someone with connections. Supply is not the same as manufacture. Who knows, just been my experience with Italian business people, that questionable decisions can often be traced to nepotism. Bosh of course, is German crap.

Brilliant video Sam. Now, I hope you're also planning on replacing the rollover valves. They also have a 10-20 year lifespan, and will leak fuel. Even the late model 360 Spiders have to have the capote top removed to replace them.

The Mercedes R230s have the same type of hydraulic cylinders. There are guides online on how to take them apart and swap the seals. They are not only orings. Basically you would have to drill little holes into the side of the cylinder at the same height where these circlips are. Then depress them through that hole so you can take them out. The hard part comes when reassembling, though. The teflon piston seals are a bit finniky to get back inside as their diameter is slightly larger than the bore. Its the same kind of problem you have, when putting pistons into an engine block. A Tool in needed to compress the piston rings...

The smaller cylinders should be very easy to DIY rebuild. The larger cylinders, you'll have to undo the crimp that holds the fittings in. That may release the larger cylinder and also allow you to change the small fitting O-rings. Even if you don't want to tackle the rebuilds, literally any hydraulic shop should be able to handle it much cheaper than a Ferrari specialist.
Thanks for teaching us how to replace a Ferrari fuel pump. It will come in handy when I buy a Ferrari.
I would've cleaned the area around the fuel-pump just to make there's as little dirt entering the system as possible.

Fuel Pump ring removal tool. 18 bucks on Amazon. Safer than hammering on that collar. On the cylinder rebuilds. I'm so glad you are smart enough to know how to avoid that stupid "ferrari" tax. Repairing those cylinders is very easy and straightforward. Don't ever pay $300. Tell them it's for a ford and they will charge like $75.
So, I owned both a Porsche and a 1980s Buick. They both needed custom crimped lines made. They were similar length and I supplied the fittings. They charged $700 for the Porsche, and $250 for the Buick.
That's exactly what happened to my Alfa 156 with its Bosch fuel pump. It looks pretty much the same except for the height. I ended up filling it with a rubber casting compound and covering that with epoxy. After 2 years it was still working when the coolant bottle went taking the head gasket with it.

18:45 that's where you use needle nose pliers. Small spade terminals can break in two very easily

I think you are correct. Just a resistor reading the fuel level. South Main Auto just had a video on a GMC Terrain(?) & he tested the fuel level sensor.

FYI to really know if you have a tight seal around those rings you'll need to fill the tanks with fuel. You can't tell until you have a full tank and the fuel reaches the ring. You'll want to do that obviously before reinstalling the roof. I learned that the hard way. Also I broke down and bought the actual tool that seats over the ring and really seal the ring. Again I found out the hard way. You can quickly sell it on Ebay if you don't plan on using it again.

Hey @Samcrac those convertible cylinders look super similar to the ones that are used on R170 SLK Mercedes. There's a lot of tutorials on how to drill a small hole to be able to loosen the C clips and refurbish them for $3. Hope it helps!

I was watching Tavarich's channel the other day - he was rebuilding a fire damaged Ferrari. The fire had started because of a jubilee clip (hose clamp?) being fitted the wrong way around and eventually cutting through the fuel hose. I'm sure you're aware of this stuff, but, whilst you have good access to everything, it'll probably be worth looking at all cable and hose runs to make sure there's not a similar problem developing...
I was thinking the same while the roof is off the car.
I would add a screw type marine deck plate, to make it look semi professional.

Definitely would have cleaned the area up of old dirt before opening it, also would have lubed the seals up with something like vaseline before placing them. Otherwise go you mate!
That and I'm pretty sure that seal wasn't seated properly from the clip he showed, same with the 2nd electrical connection, he said ' okay, all good" and it wasn't, maybe he checked again before install off camera but IDK. also why didn't he just get a pair of needle nose pliers to connect that wire is beyond me.

With the Hydraulics that have no visible way to remove, two things to check 1) is that gland end just covered up with something like a bit of plastic hiding screws / clips etc? 2) can you depress it at all and possibly turn it to unhook it?
The fully extended piston might turn out...
Or maybe the bronze bush looking thing at the piston end of the cylinder could be pulled out? Maybe drilled first to weaken it. Or maybe just yanked out by pulling the piston? I think the end of the piston is screwed on after the bush is slid over the piston and then pressed in to the cylinder. Maybe!
I would have thought you would clean the area around the fuel sending unit with some carb cleaner so when you install the new ones everything looks clean top to bottom????

both off those sender wires are red because it doesnt matter what side they are on. it only measures resistance which is the same in either direction in a resistor

Why didn't you just cut access panels to change it out like the newer cars had? You even have a newer car to make templates so they would match perfectly and fit the same covers.

I just saw an article about a recall on Ferrari's catching on fire. I believe it is on cars going back to 2005. So you may be covered under the recall.

That 'Italian engineering" had failing German Bosch parts, as you have seen, didn't you?
Sam - the convertible top mechanism was made by Webasto - a German company. They have manufacturing in Italy, Germany, and the US (Michigan). The top mechanism and hydraulics were very similar to the top used in early BMW Mini convertibles. They (Webasto US) used to do warranty teardowns for the Mini. I wonder if they would be willing to help on the know-how in the cylinder teardown. Also, I believe the cylinder end is press-fit. To disassemble, you would need to attach something like a slide-hammer to the shaft end and pull. This may damage the piston, but other than drilling a couple of holes on the end, i'm not sure how. I have to believe that the rebuild services do it a similar way.

This. Jeez. On everything from this to cartridge filters for swimming pools. And some downward pressure from an extra pair of hand in the middle might've helped as well.
To be fair to Ferrari the fuel pump is a Bosch solution. They at least share responsibility.

You perfectly summed up my experiences with those strap wrenches... God what a great example of something that seems like a good idea but is almost always poopy in a real life example. I guess the 5.3 AFM is a similar example, and a real life experience at the moment!
Oh man! Did you not replace the rollover valves while you were in there???? They're the two little round plastic vent valves on the top of each tank with rubber hoses attached. They're also just as common a failure point as the fuel pumps and should definitely be changed while you have the top off. They're super easy to change, you just turn them a quarter turn and they pull right out. I hope you haven't put the top back on yet because it's crazy not to do them while you have it apart.

Lot's of European cars and motorcycles have these tightening rings for the fuel pump holder. Get a marker and mark the ring and reference point on the tank. Then, count the turns when removing. Transfer the mark to the new retaining ring and reinstall. If you turn the same number back on, then you'll know for sure you have it tight enough before you use your final snug tightening tool of choice to align the marks. Me personally, I used XL oil filter removal pliers. Someone got smart and started using metal retaining rings, depends on the manufacturer.

I was in Scituate MA when Aerosmith's Joey Kramers' Ferrari went up in flames and he burned himself trying to put it out. I recall driving by the fuel station with my then GF and seeing the carnage.

I got some serious PTSD flashbacks from that, had a Fiat with a very similar pump, with the big o-ring failed... Had to make a special tool to get that shit off and on with literally no room and sharp metal edges.. Glad to se you doing it with all new hardware!

I don't understand why the gas leak is not a lifetime recall for any owner.
Watching this brought back horrible memories of a SAAB 9000 Turbo I had years ago.
Whilst miles from home I stopped for a break and the car wouldn't restart.
Afer some diagnosise It was a failed fuel pump. The pump was accessed from a cover under the rear seat and held in with a ring like the one on the Ferrari. I only had a hammer and a few screwdrivers in the car and tried to remove it this way but as the plastic had gone brittle I snapped nearly every tongue off before it even started to undo. I ended up knocking my own notches into it to get it off. my repair attempt at the side of the road soon gained the attention of the Police Fortunately the Police after asking where I lived offered to drive me to the local breakers yard where I was able to get another pump. They dropped me back at my car and said they'd be back in an hour and to make sure that I wasn't still there when they got back.
Pump took about 20 minutes to fit as I had to reuse the old ring as the one at the breakers snapped in half trying to get it off. And I didn't want to break what was left of the original one gettig it back on.
Car was fine drove home and the next day I went to the dealer and bought a new ring and seal
I'd of just called AAA to get it towed home and do the new fuel pumps in the comfort of my driveway.
These rings are a PITA. I wish they just used a flange with brass screws to secure the pumps.

Sam I love your videos but I cringed when I saw the extremely dangerous rigging you were using as those ratchet straps are not designed for that type of lifting application. It would have been much more safer to use industrial 3/4 ton chain type come alongs which can be rented at any rent all center. They give you much more control over the load and are much more safe to use. Just my two bits comment as an industrial millwright concerned for your safety and of those around you. Cheers from Edmonton, alberta.
If those same ratchet straps can tie my 1000lb Harley down in a a trailer and bounce around down the highway, they are no problem for a few hundred lb Ferrari seat frame. Those straps are rated to 700lbs each, minimum

Same issue on my 08 Q7. Fuel pump housing cracked. It really made the inside smell great.

Nope, US auto makers are extremely adept at making sure their lobby groups multi-million dollars bribes head off any such recalls.
@@slowery43 their been plenty of less dangerous problems recalled on North American vehicles. Just a few years ago it was air bag inflators which included almost all NA manufacturers and Asian ones as well.

Interesting on the Bosch parts! Most of the fuel system in my 6.7L powerstroke (and most other trucks obviously) is made by Bosch. .. the frame mounted fuel filter/lift pump is sealed with that exact same size green seal rubber seal.

You should catch some M539 videos. Done a ton of fuel pump replacements and rebuilds on BMWs that look far harder (though no drop top removal). Great tips and tricks on how to do it right. A strap wrench is a great tool, just not for that application.
