Torque App is better than Carly and the OBD2 Adapter is just $12 to $60 to get it to work, can even use the Free Torque for 99.9% of the stuff needed, Carly wants a $60 Subscription per year and $79 for the adapter, that's insane for a Device that will just tell you codes and clear them. I get you want to make a buck, but look out for us, not them. You would get far more people to click an Amazon Link to buy a OBD2 Bluetooth device that's cheap to buy than dive into a Subscription
Sammmmm !! I did the same thing but a golf manual 2012 , 48k miles for 5 k !
@m j they are still on. After turning them off he drives around and you see him pull up next to the VW Beatle. When he put the parking brake on the DRL's turned off. He just turned off the DRL light on his dash.

Daytime running lights are on for safety. I drove 50 k miles per year as a salesman in Ohio for over 20 years without any accidents. I think it helps other drivers see you coming. I never worried about the cost of a few bulbs .
I agree, I drive with all my lights on no matter what
It's so people can distinguish a parked car and a running/moving car.
In Scandinavia it is a law that cars have daylight lamps on, at any time while driving. And the price for the use of mostly LED lights is minimal for that. I can't even start my car without the lights turning on. If I wan't real light in my lamps I will have to turn it on, plus also my fog lights, if needed.
Especially helpful in misty or rainy conditions. In Sweden and Norway the lights are on by law.

Yeah their safer, We have LED day running lights, They give us that little extra view, Also at night with Xenon their on, But dimmed, It just gives us a little more view to the left and the right of the car at night because xenon goes straight
ditto; They've been mandatory in Canada for decades now and I've never had issues with bulbs burning out on them and with most cars coming out with led lights for DRL's now days, it's even less of a concern. For that matter, I programmed my VW to keep even the rear lights on all the time; the safer the better. Hate to be one of those guys I follow who figure with their DRL's on at night all their lights are on but aren't.
DRLs are mandatory in the EU and its a German car.
It’s good but you really need to spray the inside of the boot lid
Richard Peel yeah, but then it wouldn’t be a true SamCrac rebuild.

You can see the white sides when it's open. If you can see the white in the hatch, paint it. Having seen on You Tube what a good detailing can do to a car, if he has the $$ ($100 or a bit more), I'd do it. The red paint will just pop!
@@BobPegram I think once all the trim is in place you won't see that. Not sure how these look off the top of my head, but most hatches aren't exposed on the inside so the trim will hide the plastic.

I get the daytime running lights, cause when it’s getting dark or cloudy or foggy or whatever, some people don’t turn their headlights on so it’s hard to see them
My 2006 Chevy HHR I have only had to replace one head lamp since I have owned it. I have replaced two brake / turn signal lights. So Sam leave the lights alone.
I think its because he lives in sunny florida so its not that necessary
DRLs make cars more visible in all conditions. It’s a safety feature.
Yes, they're mandatory now in most of Northern Europe (including the UK as of 2017). Probably not necessary in Florida however.
The problem is that most DRLs are only headlights. If it is foggy/rainy or just plain overcast, you want brake lights too. But DRLs don't help with that.

The FSI engines of that period had issues with cam followers, high-pressure fuel pump (cam actuated), and carbon issues (the direct-injection elephant in the room). Make sure you upgrade the cam followers, upgrade the fuel pump with the APR version, and invest in a catch can (after checking and/or cleaning carbon buildup).

Did anyone else cringe when the fork lift picked the car up?
Yes, but copart makes them do that
typical salvage yard behaviour
Yes, I cringed but they've probably already moved it around 3 or 4 times like that already.
As long as he had the forks on the jack points you shold be ok but yes it made me pucker too
No really much they can do if you drive it out after you buy it, because it's no longer their property and you can do what you want with it.
I always run full lights, night or day. It increases your visibility to oncoming traffic if you have the sun behind you or if you're exiting a dark area like a tunnel. And lights are consumables anyways, so I don't mind using them, for their intended purpose. Also, it may sound like a contradiction, but by making a habit of turning lights on when starting the car, you by necessity also make a habit of turning lights off with the engine before getting out. So once the habit is ingrained, you decrease the odds of ever forgetting to turn off the lights, and stranding yourself with a dead battery
As a volkswagen user, i also run full lights 🤣🤣 @calvin w
Great work Sam. These sorts of quick rebuilds are really satisfying to do (and watch).
I had the same car with the same problem when I lived in Germany. Luckily mine was repaired under the extended warranty but the dealer did a crushed-walnut cleaning of the valves and then replaced the intake. What a HUGE difference it made! Such a great car in the twisties and on the Autobahn.
DRLs should be standard. They might be an inconvenience for changing bulbs but offer much more visibility
Ya why he do that theres nothing wrong whit them and if they do burn out just use the normal ligyts
DRLs are required by (federal) law
Well the DRL Light was bothering him, you know just like the pesky seatbelt light, who needs either? Sarcasm. I live in the PNW, can't stand it when someone is driving grey or white cars in the fog with no lights on, really dangerous. Otherwise nice build on this VW.

I had a VW. It was a great car, it was very comfortable. The alternator went on it, I had to pretty much take the whole front end off to replace it. Then the radiator went and then the valve cover gaskets started to leak. It was a pain in the ass to replace everything that needed to be replaced.
Ojevwe Oride Not complicated for the Germans.
The first time a friend and I pulled the intake manifold in my 2.8 Z3 it took us 4 HOURS to get it out. It has a hidden bolt that attaches the manifold to the block, and you can't see it without pulling the DISA flap (variable intake geometry for non-BMW people), idle valve and throttle body.

Happy driving, DAS AUTO! ;)
I think DRL should be left on, they are considered a safety feature here in Europe.
Yes, But they are using traditional bulbs from what he says. I love DRL on my car, but it uses full LED lights, so I'm not replacing anything. Imagine how often you would be replacing them, and because their normal bulbs, they would properly be dim anyway.
Should be banned up here in Finland, Sweden and Norway doe. Since we have alot of snow and it gets dark really quick alot of drivers dont turn on their lights, especially on roads that are lit up and when it's raining alot/snowing alot. Im a truckdriver here in Finland and I see people driving with no rear light waaay too often when they should have them on.
I believe he was just using the change as an opportunity to advertise the features of that Carly app he's promoting. That said, many GTI MK5 owners use a an computer app + OBD2 called Ross-Tech. I've read about many owners turning off the DRL's, but not only are DRLs good for safety, I believe the other reason they're always on is due to HIDs and the ballasts needed ignite them cause premature degradation of the bulb if you have to constantly turn them on and off (eg - such as flashing high beams during daytime). In addition, the bulbs are dimmed in DRL mode, I believe. I have a 2008 MK5 and I've only replaced the bulbs once (with genuine OE Hella HID bulbs bought online for around $87 for both... at the time).
But Sam, who will paint the inside of the boot ?!?🤷🏼♂️
Think the answer to this is, "it's a budget rebuild"; otherwise single-stage paint wouldn't have been used either :P

I've spent many happy hours driving a 2011 Golf Bluemotion estate/station wagon (same PQ35 platform as the Mk5), which also made the same clicking noise from the clutch pedal. It was really annoying but the car didn't belong to me (it was a work vehicle), so I've no idea what the cause was. I'd guess it was something to do with the switches for the "press clutch to start" or the auto start/stop functions.
That would have been my guess - a noisy interlock switch.

Nice job, Sam. Red paint always fades in the sun, you'd need a custom match to get any closer. 158k and it probably will need a clutch, unless it had one done, and replacing the O2 and TPS sensors if it has those original too. Makes a huge difference.

Of course Audi, etc. made them fashionable so more cars have it there now but for *looks* not for mandated safety reasons! Also GMs, because GM started putting them on since the 90s there too though people intentionally disable them lol. Meanwhile, reverse cameras and TPMS have been mandatory in the US for some years now. Weird.
Not in every EU country..
@@BenState no one's ever asked for your opinion. And it was not an opinion it was information, a BIG difference :-)
Yet another of the many pointless and wasteful edicts of the EU ...
There is a manual switch if you need lights ... just wasting incandescent bulbs ... all part of EU green hypocrisy ...
No reason to turn off DRLs, frankly that's a stupid thing to spend time on.
I had the same thought - turning off DRL is such a stupid thing to do. Keeping them on is SAFER for everyone.
@@johafomuh freedumb!
On the mk5 the DRL’s are the xenon headlights, so it’s quite a good idea to swap the DRL lights to the fog lights or turn them off completely
I would never turn DRL off because my wife is always telling me to turn on the headlights whenever it's like an hour from sunset. With DRL, I can tell her that the headlights are always on. Also, living in the flatlands to the central US, DRL lets you spot cars so far away that you wouldn't even be able to see them otherwise. Of course, if you live in a hilly, mountainous, tree-infested part of the country, it's not as useful.
I've seen so many people with DRL on and not turn the headlights in the dark, that's dangerous in my eyes
Great rebuild Sam! I’ve always loved this car!
Had my MK5 when it was 4 years old. Had it 4 years and only thing it ever needed was a new battery.. sold it with 90k on it. Good memories. Fully loaded and one of the best cars I’ve ever owned until my MK7 R
Hey Sam I love your channel. Re daytime running lights. I am a Canadian and we have daytime running lights on our cars for decades! They are a proven safety feature. Makes cars visible for miles . Proven to reduce accidents and save lives. Just say'n... turn lights on for safety!
Daytime Running Lights are a safety feature. It makes your car more visible and has been shown to reduce daytime frontal collisions.
Don't care
@@richardcole6690 you should probably care about safety.
In Germany, this (not the GTI) was the no. 1 selling car of the time. It is said, the V Version of VW Golf/Rabbit/GTI is technically the best designed car of all versions from 1973 to 2020
You just brought so much nostalgia to me. I also owned a MK5 GTI in Tornado RED, 2 Door. Some of the best car memories were in that seat. And just like you I did my own maintance. The Carbon Cleaning is something that took me 3 days to perform because of those dang bolts that were hidden. Performing that repair on a NYC Street didn't make that job any easier .
I just had to go look up the Instagram name "toprollking" from the replacement rear hatch, apparently the former owner is an arm-wrestling icon and he's also a youtuber.
That is from the other car....
You also forgot to install the GTI roof spoiler. The one you have now is a normal Trendline spoiler.
"How involved is the swap?" ... "... 'Eh, just a couple bolts"
My face watching the ACTUAL switch-out? A "couple"..... Like the little kid in Home Alone... WOW, that seemed WAY more intricate & a pretty involved process. Thanks for sharing. While I personally, would've prob just left the back since the lights weren't broken & everything seemed to still work + didn't look that bad (same w/ the grill) I get that's just me & the owner is an enthusiast who wanted it all done & polished up. Having the back to do anyway tho, I prob. would've taken the opportunity to just paint the entire thing BLACK instead, (anything but red, tho that's just 'me') what an amazing find! Phew, SO nice esp considering $$ ..... Mike is a lucky dude, that's for sure. Your fix made it an even better & entirely different run... Bet she really zips around now! :) ENJOY.... stay safe & be well.
DRL's give likea 3% reduction in accidents, not a huge deal but ill take any points i can
And yet every year people drive at night without their lights on due to DRL's. Would have been simpler to just make it law that you drive with lights on all the time.
@@DasArab In sweden we have cars that always turns on the lights. Some you can turn it off and some not.
People have grown used to it, when it first came out it was a major deal. But when every vehicle has it then it just blends in to the background again.
That is deadly for motorbicycle driver that get the attention here due to their lights on during day.
If everybody has lights on there is no warning that a motorbike seems to come ...
Here you can drive as fast as you can and then a light on a bike can be the saver for the driver cause everyone knows that this light can be here in a second ... not 3 seconds of a car ... that uses lights on day.
In all my Lexus and Toyota’s, you can turn off DRLs or leave them on if you want.
I recall DOT officers complaining that i wouldn't shut off my lights when crossing the truck scale with DRL's because they were required by law in Canada. I think they are a good idea especially since riding a motorcycle!!!
Your remind me of my self when I was a teen-ager loads of cars in the back yard with issues and me refusing to go to a dealer or mechanic the good old days now I'm to unwell to work so can't afford to buy cars or even drive this Chanel and your vedieo kinda make me smile again :)
Great job finishing a project in one video... Very satisfying feeling :)
Thought rich rebuild was going to pop up somewhere since it was a salvage yard episode.
