@@dtmfool789 subaru uses boxer engines, which are much more compact and rest much lower in the engine bay. Whereas on the RB the spark plugs are easily assessible right on top, subaru spark plugs require essentially digging through your engine to get to them

Another way to test for "spark" is using a touchless live wire probe which will light up and beep every time the ignition system sends current to the sparkplug.

Zach is such an awesome teacher. He's extremely knowledgeable, but never comes across as arrogant or anything like that. He makes everything sound really simple and like anyone can do it with a little learnin'. Plus sometimes things don't always go according to plan. That's realistic and I appreciate how they show that kinda thing.

4:50, BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS ONE! if you had fuel in the cylinder and you pull a plug out and ground it to the block or something close and have someone crank the engine, the vaporized gas fumes can come out of the spark plug hole and ignite a fireball in your face when the spark plug sparks.
Can confirm, fortunately the fire didn't burn anyone
Moral of the story: Don’t ignore a car or it *WILL* get your attention no matter what it takes.

My wagon decided it was a great idea to have the gear box slip when I bought my new Daily/Project car and then I drove my wagon for a while then it stopped slipping and then I drove my daily/project car it did it again. They have feelings, they need to be driven

@Joshua Clemons Chris Fix did a no start diagnosis too. It is a similar video with a different vehicle. Only, Chris Fix added in timing to the mix making it five things an engine needs instead of four. Hence the joke earlier about having already seen this one.

I recommend to buy old benz like w201 or w124 they are very easy to work on and they came with many engines and you can make easilly +500whp with minor modifications only problem in them is transmission what bottlenecks

2:30 You are missing one. Timing.
If the belt broke or slipped the engine will run poorly or not run at all. It could also be the ECU failing.
speaking of timing, if the tachometer/crankshaft position sensor is starting to go south or quite simply stopped working, it can straight up never inject fuel into the engine or run really rough.
He said he installed a new ecu lol

When I said "It could also be the ECU failing." I meant that problems with timing can also be caused by a ECU failing or not been configured right not that his ECU was failing...
I like how’s he’s calm and collected about trouble shooting his car. I remember when my 180sx wouldn’t start and I was so mad I literally cried. It’s not that easy lol
because he knows with him resources time and money it will be fixed regardless . All he has to do is play cool on camera . If we can't figure it out. we are screwed

If your only car is your project car, then little problems can cause huge amounts of stress if a project gets behind schedule when you gotta figure out how to get to work in the morning. The best thing a car modder can do? Own two vehicles - one that is your modded car, and the other is your safety vehicle that you never modify.
Well the more I learn my engine the easier it gets. My BMW still scares me, I think I could tear my Maxima or Integra without a doubt.
The s14 probably has depression from not being in the spotlight.

I've been watching a lot of car shows and how to shows for a long time and this is on par with all that major network stuff. Great job guys. For real. This is great stuff. For those of us that know how to diagnose, it's still refreshing to see someone calmly go through the steps and remind us how simple it is.
next to hi lo this is my favorite series on the show. i love watching zach go through the troubleshooting process as he's very clear and concise with his analysis. keep it up.

Agreed. It's not just spark, it's spark at the right time. I have seen someone put in a distributor and some crazy random spark plug wiring order - it would show a spark at the plug all day long, but rarely start and not stay running.

An even easier way to test the sparks is just jam your finger in badaboom badabing

@@blue_lancer_es Or just do what I did on my motorcycle. I wanted to perform an RPM drop test to see which cylinder wasn't working as hard, so I pulled the plug wire off to disable cylinder 1, while the engine was running, redirecting the shock to my hand.

Really like these very informative videos, I showed my daughter this just so she has a sense of what a mechanic is doing so it gives perspective. It is highly informative while also being very approachable.

I knew it because i had the same problem in my car but in my case i had to buy a new pump unit because it was an inclosed unit
So how were you able to tell? I’m asking for a friend because I totally know how you can tell that
@@michaelpugh2617 it was mostly because i was driving and it cut out. So i go through the same route he goes through. Air was no problem no sensor and only a filter at the airbox so that was quickly done. Spark the cheapmans method just take a plug and check if it sparks. Compression the correct way is with a tester but you could always put your finger over the sparkplug hole. There was compression so i sprayed some starter fluid into the air intake and it fired right up so i knew it was fuel.
When my car won’t start I curse only having one set of keys that is lost.

I had that identical problem when I did the fuel pump in my car, it kept running lean only in boost, I kept adding more and more fuel into the tune and it didn't help. Eventually the odd hissing noise in the tank during priming gave it away 😅

@@quassle3755 timing shouldn't be an issue for the grand majority of cases. Chrisfix may have gone more in depth but this was a good video nonetheless particularly for someone who doesn't know a lot about cars.

Took me an entire summer to diagnose my 2 stroke jetski wasn't making proper contact from the plugs wires to the spark plugs. Diagnosing is a bitch!
Charles Wilson lol I was worse. I did a brand new top end but didn’t touch the cylinders. I just honed me a bit. Turns out they had 400 hours on the cylinders and my compression was 90 psi. Literally had to re rebuild engine 2 (engine) hours later now I got 150 psi. What a bitch lol

Love the videos Zack! Though between that low compression and the smoke at the tail pipe, I think you have some refreshing to do internally. Compression should be around 150psi or higher I believe

Love your S14, I've got a Manual S14 1995 with a SR20DET Black top engine swap, got it running for a week and now it wont turn on. None of the lights wont try to do anything. Going to buy a new wiring harness for the car and new computer. Been working on it for over a year can't wait to finish her.

Don't worry bro... even people on CZcams can be wrong sometimes. In this particular instance, @ZachJobe is wrong. The USDM S14 Kouki frontend is only 50% of the best looking frontend that the S14 rocks here in the states. Zenki headlights and grill with a USDM Kouki front bumper... now THAT is the best looking combo-breaker out there for these cars. Ask me how I know. =)
