This week on Money Pit, we take a look at answering the age-old question: Is buying someone else’s project car a good idea? It seems like a good way to save some money on aftermarket parts that you would end up buying anyway, but it can definitely be a huge can of worms. Come along as we inspect James’ new project car to see if he made a good move or just flushed his cash down the ol’ money pit!
We have a new channel!

Your analogy is perfect for car guys in their 20's/30's. I bought a Z31 300zx turbo years ago from a friend and felt like I had to go back to school to work on a vg30det. Harmony right so a cartoon
Harmony I think you mean its a cartoon
Ok, so neither person is technically wrong. Animé is a type of cartoon, but when you call animé a cartoon, you make it sound as though grown adults are watching animation intended for children and only children. You can be a fan of animé, you can be a fan of American animation (even if it’s done by a Japanese studio), but somehow, when you start calling animation “cartoons,” well, you’re not watching Initial D, you’re watching Wacky Racers, even though you’re an adult and need to grow up! It’s like they’re not “toys,” they’re “collectibles.”

My first thought when I heard Pumph bought a Trueno: "Money Pit Szn 2"
I would love to see a series with Pumphrey going at his own car. I am not too sure what the knowledge difference is between Pumphrey and Jobe, but I feel like P doesn't know as much. It would be interesting to see him learn as he works on the car, or who knows? Maybe he is just as good or better than Jobe and can make some really cool videos. Either way I hope we see more of the Trueno.

“Sometimes my genius is.. it’s almost frightening”
I made that big leap on a project car and made it even more so a leap as it being my daily on an 88 suzuki samurai. Ive pulled 52 feet and 10 inches of useless wire, deleted the entire R22 AC system, breather to the intake & valve cover, oil pan leak fix, throw out bearing fix, tore out rubber cemented in carpet & epoxy painted the interior, installed a bluetooth reciever & speakers, multiple gauges, EGR delete, LED headlight upgrade, wiper brace armor, and so much more to come and Ive never been happier with a purchase that Ive made 2 years and some change ago.
This lil thing turns heads and rips and theres always something more I want to add onto it, hell might even twin charge it after all the engine upgrades.

Love the content, the last dozen videos have been gold! Although honestly, I wouldn't put my life solely in the hands of the jack stands. I usually try to leave the floor jack up to the chassis in case of an accident of failure of equipment. Let the car down on the stands, and then bring floor jack up to chassis height. Might save your life
3 years later still top of the list to rewatch. We need a 50 ep like this again
So if some of you in the comments section are considering buying a heavily modded car, here’s my advice. If you are inexperienced with cars, DON’T. I’ve seen it time and time again where people will buy a car like this, and it overwhelms them very quickly. Just buy a factory bone stock car and start with a blank canvas. Learn as you go! It becomes your car, you start to get a “feel” for that car. You’ll recognize when something is wrong. When a car is this heavily modified from the get go, and you don’t know what’s going on you’ll drive it into the ground without realizing
I see your pov, but for some people, there's no other way to learn, I'll respectfully agree and disagree with you
SamDaMan2236 that’s why it all depends on the person and experience.
I would agree but if I found a cheap treno I would not pass that offer even if it was heavily modified
So just to clarify, if it’s something small like a car with some coilovers and exhaust, sure that’s fine. A newbie isn’t going to struggle anymore with that than a factory car. But if we’re talking something with a fancy engine swap/a car with some stuff that’s been custom wired etc etc, I’d say that’s a bit much for a newbie to get into. It pains me to see people I know who made that mistake and now they have cars sitting in their driveway for over a year because they can’t tackle something like that
I can attest to this as facts. Bought a bolt on modded 07 WRX wagon, and it had a fair share of problems that after three yeats of ownership I'm just understanding how to fix.
Most important part of buying a project AE86: drooling over the Technotoytuning catalogue...
I wish they had more parts but yes there company is the shit

Sorry, but you're in the wrong place. These dumbasses are complete noobs when it comes to cars and how they work. Or how to even work on them for that matter. Yea they can talk about cars and make videos on them and talk about how they're "car guys" all they want but a polished turd at the end of the day is still a turd. I have a few project motorcycles under my belt (mostly motorcycles), and even if you get the bike complete AND for free you end spending a lot of money. Just as an example, got a 99 Kawasaki zx7r complete all original fairiings, 22k miles, very good shape overall, been sat in a covered garage for 5 + years for 400 dollars, yet, spent so much money bringing her back (misc many parts, carbs rebuilt with OEM parts, new brakes with upgrades, new tires, and the list goes on). Ended up spending more than a good used one on the market (even though they're kinda rare to find these days). But I do it because it's a hobby, I know economically speaking it's cheaper to get the vehicle you want in mint shape even if you're paying a premium price.

I typically never would buy someone's project. Of course we all have our "goal car" and sometimes a project car can check off a few things at once. I honestly expect to fix and replace a bunch of stuff on an older car that has had multiple owners. It makes it difficult when you get a car that is popular or has a lot of motorsports history that involves "being rough" (drifting). It can also be difficult if you want to build an obscure car. I've been an Infiniti M30 guy since 2004 and at the end of 2019, I picked up a former magazine M30 that my friend built for Project Car magazine. I set my intentions of rebuilding this car in and out, including a blown RB25det. I did almost everything you guys did in the video, which is great info! Sometimes for our attainable goal cars, I feel it is okay to build from the ground up. Not everyone wants to, but my personal perspective, I want to make this car new as much as possible. Enjoying the content fellas!
