The Miata was overdue for a roll bar, so this week we’ll install a SICK built-to-order rollbar in the Money Pit Miata. We took the opportunity to compare it against a $65 “roll bar” and do some highly scientific testing with our friends at The BlackOut Garage!

The cheap one is called a mouse trap by us Miata dudes, if you get rear ended it’ll fold onto you and will do much more harm than protect you

@@miataisalwaystheanswer1356 go with hard dog if you want to go cheap blackbird fabworx for expensive. Both are good but the bbfw is higher quality. I got a hard dog deuce and it's pretty good it's just safer for street use because it's further back than most other ones.

The A pillars on these Miata make it a Deathtrap either way lol. The roll bar at least keeps the nuggins from hitting the ground directly.
it doesn't mather which one they instaled when windshield would bend same on both (didnt look they expected that from video reaction), as it would still be week point, no triangles there to support it.
Since Donut hired Zach Wednesday’s have been my favorite day of the week.

Exactly. Those are even labeled as style bars when buying them.
I mean the bar worked fine the first time they dropped the car on it and only slightly bent after being dropped a second time when it was already weakened. Nevermind that it held up better than the windshield of the car which is what those rollbars are designed to do. It's not even a proper test because in a car that is actually all together a bar like that would have more support. Nevermind that having a rollbar is better than no rollbar at all.
@@Jaqen-HGhar did we watch the same video? The style bar provided no support just like the dummy’s neck and windshield. I’d say the bar they dropped the car on didn’t do anything. Even worse it could not hold the weight of the stripped chassis from a minor six foot drop with no other G forces acting on it. Huge difference between the back roll bar in the nice Miata versus this piece made from fused together coca cans.
@@iPlungerApparently not because the video I watched showed a first drop happening on the bar in the exact angle and direction that the bar "failed" the second time. At 14:13 the car falls sideways at an angle after already being lifted and guess what? It didn't didn't even flex (only bending slightly but enough to set it up for failure the second time) and despite all the weight going on one side of the bar. The only reason the dummy hit it's head was due to it landing on the tire. So then the second time at 16:43 the bar "fails" due to already being slightly bent from the first drop and it only gives somewhat in the direction it was already bends somewhat and returns to support the weight of the car despite the windshield caving in. Had the bar actually failed it would have bent as much as the windshield. The bar is still above the seat even after all that which my original point was that it's better than nothing at all and you can see they are trying to make it look much worse than it is by bending on it it as hard as possible after turning the car over right away but even the dude says that all the bolts are still in place (despite Zach trying to make that not the case).
The second test is pointless because no one would reuse bars after a rollover and especially after they were already visibly bent before even starting so there is no reason to re run the test other than they didn't want to waste the video. Maybe if they had titled the video, "Do cheap rollover bars still protect you after an accident?" That would have been more honest but no.
Also you used the term style bars which are a totally separate thing and literally say when you purchase them or if part of an OEM package that they are not rollover bars and will NOT protect you in the event of a rollover. So if they are trying to pass off style bars as actual rollover bars as a legitimate test that's even worse.
@@Jaqen-HGhar At 14:26, the windshield frame landed on top of the tires which prevented the roll bar from touching the ground.
These types of cheap roll bars have limited points of contact to frame and thus less structural rigidity are very unsafe. There's no regulation for aftermarket functional and non-functional so if you are an amateur looking to modify your car, a cheap "style" bar and actual roll bar are both marketed as roll bars and it's very easy to pick the cheaper option thinking it will be effective.

The $65 "roll bar" isn't even a roll bar. It's a style bar, aka mousetrap.

@@ueehurstonsecurity8887 In some rollovers, the style bar/"roll bar" will actually just fold forward and crush the driver, like the way a mouse trap snaps over a mouse's head.
Google "miata style bar roll over" and you'll see a few examples. There's a white NA where not only the style bar folded forwards, even the tops of the seats are folded over as well.
I once had an acquaintance who had one installed with only the two bolts on the side screwed in and the bar could be pivoted by hand. I pointed that out to him and he fixed it pretty quickly.
@@zacharytracy3797 I just bought a Miata, it has a style bar. It's held in by four bolts, I'm ordering a proper roll bar right after I deal with some other issues it has

Dude... oil based paint markers... they even have multiple colors. Easier to wield in tight spaces. Also great for marking bolts. Clean and tidy, fit right in the toolbox.👍

Dude i did the same thing, with the exact same harbor freight stool. HF cheaped out on the metal and the joining process used to hold them together. Fortunately for me i’m a fabricator and TIG’d it back up at work, added 2 gussets too.

3 things I would suggest to anyone installing a legit rollbar that weren't covered: 1. ALWAYS make sure ALL mounting plates line up perfectly before drilling and bolting. 2. Also before drilling, make sure your soft top or hardtop will clear the bar and especially the soft top during the closing process. 3. You can get some vinyl trimming to make your interior plastic cuts look stock if needed (I hacked mine up with snips and the trimming worked like a charm). Other than that, this is a great look at what's involved in putting one on. And great to see the style bar tested, I swear everyone in the forums say to stay away from these 😂

Welder/fabricator here - DOM tubing is awesome. However your description is inaccurate: the thing that gives it consistent strength in every direction is the fact that it is drawn over a mandrel and NOT welded.
If you look inside a DOM tube, there is no seam. A weld seam like you get in normal, cheap hot rolled ERW (electric resistance welded) tube causes a difference in hardness and therefore strength along that weld in the tube. The DOM process eliminates the need for a weld seam and so gives the tubing awesome, consistent strength properties - perfect for a roll cage.

Damn, for some reason I thought they came stock with roll bars, thats kinda crazy how convertibles can be street legal with 0 head protection in a flip, yet pop up headlights arent allowed for pedestrian safety.
Well, neither are legal anymore, but both were allowed when the first gen Miata was built.

Forks needed to be wider apart when lifting car first time and what a great idea to put forks on building so building takes load,not. But awesome demo on cheap roo bar and I was wondering if softtop was going to fit over good roll bar when roof was put up.
