Pro Tip for easier application of the filler: put the filler/putty in a piping bag (for baking, applying frosting) and choose the appropriate tip (usually the smallest round tip hah) and fill in the cracks like you much would with a caulking gun. Makes for an infinitely better end result, and is honestly the best way to apply it. Use can also use a ziplock bag or a plastic shopping bag. This method also works for mortar repair.

There is a 4th option. You can fill the cracks and use a roll-on bed liner. It gives a good texture and actually protects the dash. $50 for a gallon can, and you can get a lot of different colors.

The flocked look like garb in my opinion. The Sem way is the best way, but the key is to do it properly. The crack wasn't finished being filled and was very over sanded. The best way to texture the Sem is to use a spray gun for the primer and dial the air right down so that it's almost a spackle, where you can see the individual droplets if paint, like purposely make it orange peel, then you sand the crowns off of the droplets that form. When you apply the paint you apply super dry spackly coats just over the repair area, then you blend outward going further with each coat. It can usually be done with the dash still in the car as well, and if you pick the correct colour, you don't need to do the entire dash either.

A massive gaping hole on the top of the dash isn't a crack. The correct solution for those is an overlay that is epoxied whatever's left of the dash. You want cracks, GM trucks and SUV's built on the GMT-900 platform. If the vehicle has not been garage kept, they all crack around the passenger airbag.

Go ahead and throw in a toon of Lexus owners...
There were twelve models affected from 2003 to 2011. In total, there were about 3.5 million vehicles impacted, which included the following models: 2006-2008 Lexus ES 350, 2003-2008 Lexus GX 470, 2006-2008 Lexus IS 250 and 350, 2007 Lexus LS 460
These models also were affected: 2004-2006 Lexus RX 330, 2007-2009 Lexus RX 350, 2005-2008 Lexus RX 400h, 2003-2005 Toyota 4Runner, 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon, 2007-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2004-2010 Toyota Sienna, and the 2004-2008 Toyota Solara.
The owners sued and original owners may have been able to get 'em replaced but by the time notices went out, many of the vehicles were on their 2nd & 3rd owners. Toyota reliability extends mainly to the drive-train for those vehicles.

Covercraft/coverlay LMC truck all have quality covers that ship well equipped and fit damn near close enough to skip adhesives.

The dash overlay has the best chance of looking really good as I have done several on older classic cars, BUT it involves removing the dash to get the best outcome. You must sand (grind) all the damaged areas and repeatedly test fit the cap before actually gluing it down. Then there may be some sanding necessary on the edges (test fit on car to locate trouble spots). After that you can paint it to match and SEM is a very good product to use for that. Finally reinstall dash and it will look sweet. I would only resort to filling & flocking if a dash overlay was not available for the particular car I was working on.

a short tip for the retextureing step :
use acryl or silicone (for the bathroom seams for example) and lay it on top of a part of the dash with intact texture so you get a negative from it and let it dry ... after that you can fill your cracks und re-textrue it with the negative so you imprint a positive into the filling material itself, the filler or paint is to thin to get the right texture

Dig the flocking and my Dr. Vinyl guy used to be really good at matching texture but I most recently went with a synthetic suede material and tucked and rolled it. You still have to bevel and fill the cracks but it was slightly cheaper than the flocking at $35 for 2 yards for essentially the same result, (although, I'm sure it would outlast the flocking in the end). I have to say that I'm impressed that you don't have any fear when it comes to these things. Jump in and make it work. You prove that even if you screw up, it can be fixed. Thank You. ALSO, very entertaining...

Well, check it out, I'm a fake kintsugi expert. I say fake because you said to add cracks, but even if you hadn't, the problem is the gold and the plastic wouldn't flex at the same rate, so the gold would crack on one or th'other side basically....instantly. My solution is usually mixing gold nail polish with an adhesive medium having approx same flex level. So, epoxy with ceramics, cyanoacrylate with plastics, etc.
For this foam dash I would use barge cement, unmixed, preferably with a channel left on top in which to run nail polish in. Protip, the gold nail polish with sparkles looks like trash, and doesnt look like real gold at all.

You can make a texture stamp when doing repairs to try and maintain the original dash texture. Lay down a big puddle of hot glue on a good section of dash, then peel it off when dry, and use it to rubber-stamp the filler on your final coat to blend the smooth into the original texture.

    • @nickopedia5669

That's a really good Idea, although I think I'd use caulk or something that's not super hot when laying it down. (It would take a while to cure though).
Probably also put a layer of screen door mesh after the first 1/8" of caulk and then a bit more on top to make it stronger so it doesn't stretch or break (cause the caulk is weak)

  • @kona5853
    @kona5853 Před 3 měsíci

I really like the Flock it’s really cool looking.
There is another way… a bit more advanced. A guy i knew when I lived in St. Louis had a diy overlay method in his garage. He would color match vinyl. Using a thick heavy weight stiff vinyl.(not very pliable)
    Strip the cracked dash vinyl.
If the foam was repairable he’d repair it with some light shaping. Otherwise he’d strip to the boarding and glue overlay new dense stiff foam then contour shape it.
He’d cut the vinyl to shape similar to upholstering a seat or door card.
His method may make more sense if I explain it. 1-he’d drill a number of small holes in dash from beneath (not through foam just the board and he’d glue/seal plumbing barbs on the holes.
2- he’d put the vinyl in a heat box make it soft
3- attached a vacuum manifold and hoses to the barbs
4-very fast he put a weak adhesive on the vinyl, wrap overlay seal the seams with pinching force to board on the back side and applied a not full vacuum(too much causes wrinkles, too little doesn’t bond the adhesive). He’d use a heat gun and a rubber spatula to press out folds and wrinkles.
5- he’d use the heat gun and seal vinyl borders on the back side and tack them into place. The vacuum will bleed off so it is constantly pumping.
6- after the vinyl is cooled and and adhesive has cured slowly release vacuum.
7- if texture was too deep in vinyl, color match with some type vinyl plastic paint.
His garage felt like it was a blistering hot oven when he did his work.
He charged $$$(maybe $500-600) for those he didn’t know and those he knew, just supply him his cold brewskies until he’s done… if the cold brewskies stop he stops, so be prepared. He’s done full color changes to the interior and dash and it literally looks and feels original production line.

I have done that prepare myself. You just about had it right you have to do a light coat of the filler then use your material for texturing. I've done it several times. If you're good at color-matching. You can dab the color into the crack instead of painting the whole dashboard. Spray your color onto a piece of cardboard and dab it into your filler once you have it set up. You can paint the dash and it would probably look more uniform. I've been repairing car interiors professionally for over 5 years now and I can tell you that the SEM products work great, but it takes a lot of time and experience to know how to work them to make it look perfect. But for a first time that looks really good!

Question - my 2006 Infiniti's dash appears to be chemically breaking down and it looks like it's melting. It becomes super sticky in the summer. Think flocking over it will hide this and/or at least slow it down?
On a side note, Zach is great.
