This lens seems super impressive. It has really intrigued my interest, as I do a lot of close range photography at events. It's always hard to get full body shots with anything higher than a 30mm lens when you're only 3-5 feet from a subject with a crop sensor camera. That aperture is soooo good at 1.8.

Going after? I don't know. It's a good alternative for those with pay double the price of the sigma or four times the price of the samyang, I bet they also perform much better, but they're not really targeting the same customers. And honestly with its lack of OSS I wouldn't even pick the 10-20 over the old 10-18 if they were the same price. But... it's good that Sony is áctually designing APS-C lenses again. I just wonder if this comeback is in time to convince people they are actually not abandoning APS-C after all.

Thanks for this video and the other new Sony release lenses. I would suggest a video centric video comparing all three lenses and how they do especially on your a6100 since that camera, nor do these lens, have any stabilization. Love the new wider lenses to compensate for the 1/5 x crop of APS-c, but I would get it more for video than photo shooting (a6400), but am concerned that none of these have any stabilization.

I'm basically debating between this at crop mode or the Samyang 18mm 2.8 on my A7C..
I've got the 24 GM & 20G... and honestly I don't use the 20mm G much for photos & I feel that a lighter lens would be nice for videos.. Also, if you have an A7C it crops 1.1x (I think) when it is used in 4K 30fps...
so I'm looking to replace it with a wider & lighter lens.

9mm and 11mm is big difference. Laowa is plenty sharp lol, nobody will see a difference. Otherwise there is something wrong with your copy. If you are making real estate photos, especially from tripod, laowa is much better. For real estate videos i would probably take 11mm sony. For general use i would take sony, altho even that depends.. if i would also own sony 15mm i would maybe still take laowa.

I'm sold for this one. I currently have the Samyang 12mm manual, and the Sigma 16mm, which for my purposes are a bit redundant (bought the Sigma for the AF), bulky, and weight 3x as much as the new Sony. The Samyang AF version never really convinced me, but this one surely does.

    1) SONY must have realized, that without one of these 3 new wide angle lenses, the SONY ZV-e10 wasn't really able to do its job properly!
    2) Who is going to buy CANON's new APSC cameras, with SONY nicely exacerbating Canon's problems with a severe lack of native lens selection?
    3) Your 9mm Laowa lens is not made obsolete! Auto-focus is more of a potential hindrance for Astro . . .
    4) Put your Laowa in the closet for 3 months before you sell it.

Nice video @Arthur R, question; do you think this would be a good fit for the a7IV? I know it has APSC mode on it but is there any disadvantages or is there a better full frame alternative? I have the 16-35 but would like something wider.

11mm apsc is 16,5mm equivalent, so that will be no wider. And 1.8 apsc aperture will act similar as 2.8 on FF.
Only reason to buy 11mm is size and weight. Or if your camera crops in certain video modes maybe.

I have been thinking about a wide prime to essentially complete my set of lenses, but, and I know this is sacrilege to say it, I find the wide angle on my near 3 year old phone pretty good, and given I am planning on getting a new in the releases around September, I will probably hang on and see how that performs before spending the money on this lens, or even the Samyang if it stays cheap.

  • @trosencrantz
    @trosencrantz Před 2 lety +4

I suppose I could use this on a Sony 7 IV for shooting in 4K 60 when it crops to give me a closer perspective to the loss of the wide angle of view like my 16mm due to the crop factor during 4K 60p. Just wonder if the PZ 10-20mm would be a better lens for this scenario with at least some range to it as well.

Because this is for cropped sensors, the focal length will actually be 16.5mm, how does this affect the Aperture at f/1.8? Will it still be an actual 1.8 or does that change as well to something like f/2.8?

Hi, Arthur! Can you, please, compare this Sony lens with Laowa 9mm in terms of sharpness, noise and vignetting in different light situations? I've used some of extra wide lenses (Laowa, Samyang, 7Artisans), but I've never ever been satisfied with their performance completely. Maybe, Sony will be the first lens which can easily cope with all those problems?
