When a band sounds as young and as good today as they did almost 48 years ago is absolutely amazing, thank you for sharing!
Best live band of all time 👍😀
They should sell their secrets to keeping their voices healthy. Honestly incredible how great they sound as singers having done this as long as they have.
YES! Makes me greatful for being a child of the 70s!😁 I also loved Fleetwod Mac, Chicago, Wings, Queen.😁❤🎶
Sound better than ever.
@@jackhartgraves4988 LOL
holy smokes, they sound fantastic.that bass player is all over it.
Yeah ! Much agree .... awesome bass playing !
Yeah, as a bass player myself, I never really thought much about a group like the Doobies. But here, with the more intimate setting (like we used to have back in the '60s and '70s) I can really hear him, and he's very good. I just miss having a drummer.
John Cowan is awesome. As a singer and bassist!
John Cowan is the man!!
And it looks like they are still having fun after all these years!
What a star John McFee is - guitar, pedal steel, dobro, violin, cello, banjo, mandolin. That rippling banjo line in the chorus is a killer.
That was a scary time for all of us. So good to see them come together, via the internet and in isolation to deliver some great music to us all. Thank you, Doobie Bros. 🙏
Can't believe Tom Johnston sounds just like he did on the 1972 recording!
He sure does sing like he did over 40 years ago.....
It's amazing. I'm stunned.
........fine like wine...
1 key lower, 50 years later...absolutely stunning
SynthieAl key of d better for his vocals
"What the people need is a way to make them smile"
I'm still listening to the music!
And gettin all that harmonious love, vibrantly coloring my sound system with a groove from beyond!
Man, these icons.... Love all of em'!
This song, and every other song on that album makes me smile. 😃
Amen
I have listened to that song thousands of times, the addition of the banjo was off the chain. Still killin' it.
No auto tune.
No makeup.
Pure talent.
It’s. That. Simple.
Peace and love to all :)
You said it!
Does hair dye count as make-up?
@@evo5dave "cosmetics such as lipstick or powder applied to the face, used to enhance or alter the appearance." probably not. Then again, "TV makeup" is different again, because it's used to counteract the unnaturally strong lighting, so maybe they have makeup, maybe they don't. I think there might be some botox in there, though.
No backup dancers ;).
Real R&R
John McFee’s banjo playing elevates this song to a unique level. It sounds amazing!!!
Yep. He’s an amazing musician
@@randytingle2416 It's unreal...is there any instrument this guy can't play?!
I has been trying to find an isolated track of just his banjo track. I’m not a huge banjo person, just LOVE his in this song.
In the original was the banjo in the song or was this added to it for this version?
@@brianbright7501 - It's in the original, although nowhere near this pronounced. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listen_to_the_Music#Song
These guys haven’t lost a thing. Vocals and playing still sound incredible💯
You can thank pre-recorded vocals and instruments, along with pitch correction lightly applied to tighten up the vocals. None of this is ‘live”. A lot can be manipulated in post-production, which is why this sounded so good.
They all had to add their parts in remotely one at a time onto the track to build the recording up. Still very fun, up close, and personal touch.
INCREDIBLE EXACTLY
Actually, they've lost a half step. The guitars are tuned to Eb. ;)
@@daved.4041 I've heard them live over the years and they sound the same.
John Mcfee , the banjo just sounds magnificent on this .
...as was the fiddle in Black Water...pure talent.
Man! Who got chills down their spine when John McFee played the banjo in the intro?
This is a great rendition.
The dude is a master musician
Me!!!!🤗
Me - totally awesome . Want the tab . Note for note . Standard tuning ?
Freaking awesome
I did
How is this possible? Tom and Pat sound as amazing as ever, vocally
Take it in kids. Nothing better than talented musicians playing together.
Nobody will ever sound as good as the Doobies! I'm glad I'm the age that I am because I was able to grow up with them. The younger generation doesn't know what they missed. It feels good to say I have been a fan for 48 years and the band hasn't missed beat yet.
Amen!! 👍👍
Keyword "musicians" and not some silly looking millennial clown with a keyboard making smoke alarm noises set to a computerized drum track!
So true, so true!! Talent personified in their artistry!!!
Just Fantastic x
Why the negativity towards electronic music? Can’t they both be great, but for totally different reasons?
John McFee going to town with that banjo is making me so joyful.
I dont post a lot on CZcams. I just wanted to let the band know, I think you are all geniuses. If ever am feeling down, I can turn on Listen To The Music and I am immediately in a better place. I love you guys and your music. Top notch, above professional musicians. My father turned me on to you guys in the 70's and have appreciated your music for, well decades. Keep on keeping on as long as y'all can.
If you disliked this video, you didn't listen to the music.
On that Note,Listen to your heart, too.
and you can go to China Grove
they didn't like it because Tom thinks that covid is really killing people when most people with a brain know that this is a confirmed scam.
@@trueknowledgeispower Yeah, a scam the ENTIRE WORLD is in on, right?? SMH....
Shame theres 76 of them with their thumbs down, obviously miserable with life.
When the Doobies ask me to 'Listen to the Music,' I oblige. (Congrats on the HOF nod.... 'bout freak'in time!)
The Eagles have received a lot of attention over the years and rightfully so when you consider how well their music has stood against the passage of time. However, the Doobies are right there with them. Doobies rock!!
As far as the above comments go, I'm checking off "all of the above".
You can tell, after all these years, they still put the music out there as though it was the first time and I still get that rush I got 50 years ago.
The music is sublime and they don't forget to put the word in for the people that are hurtin' during these devastating times. You guys truly meet the definition of "the best" .
Schell you couldn't say it better.
Amen to that!
Eagles can only fly so high, doobies heights are limitless...
I love both bands- however- the DOOBS are the best!
Man, the voices sounded just as good as in the old days of the group, the banjo made up for the lack of drums, and the Bass was fantastic. He filled in any of the gaps. Great guy on the bass. I play bass so I am listening to the bottom end. I played lead guitar for years, but I got on bass and loved it because a good bass player can get the grove going.
This kiddies is what real vocals sound like!
Amen to that!!🙏
These guys haven't lost their touch one bit at all...
Now this is pure Doobie Brothers.
If you play it, they will listen to the music.
The goose bumps came as soon as TJ started singing. Crazy to be this good after so many damn decades.
Especially since he almost left us in the mid 70s.
Its called talent, never dies
They still sound as tight and crisp as they did back in the 70’s.
They recorded each part separately to a click track likely, so, tight is easy
I saw them at a Miss. Casino in like 2008, my wife demanded I go, I was like hey, I am playing cards, but alas I relented, I had to go to a dried-up old band in their mid to late 50s I thought to myself. But, those cats were still damned good. And yes they are still tight, look at them singing China Grove on Good Morning America in like 2015, the kids were expecting Blahhhhhhhh, they loved it !!
They sure do 👌🏻
@@halcooper3070 Negative! :)
Unbelievable! That sound is so neat, like a studio recording!
I was a teenager doing a carpentry apprenticeship in Christchurch city New Zealand when this song came out. It was an anthem to us. Them 45s got thrashed.
TJ and Pat can still belt it out
No auto tune, just pitch perfect vocals and harmonies.
Tommey Tommey um, that is heavily processed.
@@couerl Processing is not the same as auto tune. Most processing has to do with EQ or dynamics. Auto tune is pitch correction, and I hear none of that in this video.
It's really obvious when the voices are not warbling, isn't it?
@@Supernautiloid Pitch correction is most certainly "processing." The idea is to apply it so that it's not noticeable. These vocals are just a bit too perfect to not have been touched up.
Holy fuck, it's the Doobies, get a clue.
Ive never clicked on something so fast. And that bass is thick.
LOVED THAT BASS GROVE
One more thing - Tommy one of the best rock and roll voices of all time! Him and Paul Rogers (Bad Company) two of the best!
It is 8:57 the east coast I awoke to this song in my head. Brings a smile and tears to my eyes. I lost my big brother in 2015. he was 13 years older than me.. First time I heard this was in 1974 when at a party he had I was 9 . Fist time I remember hearing the doobie brothers. you guys are so good and unique. . I miss him horribly!!
That’s some mighty fine a pickin’ and a grinnin’ Mcfee.
I think that grin is pretty much McFee's default expression; I've hardly ever seen him without it. :)
Can't believe they still have their singing and playing chops!
Unbelievable they still sound exactly the same 40years on.This is what pure talent is.Nothing else matters.Fantastic.
You mean, " FIFTY YEAR'S".
Thanks guys :) from Melbourne Australia.
I just find it disgusting when people give stuff like this a thumbs down. I am so grateful for this music. Thank you Doobie Bros! You got my thumbs up!
Yes, I often wonder what on earth inspires those downward thumbs. If you don't find this performance amazing and if you don't find that the song lifts your spirits, then you simply have no taste!
Giving a thumbs down to this is just pure unadulterated ignorance. Some individuals that do this are just disgruntled "musicians" that could never achieve this level of musicianship, and are unwilling to accept that reality.
They would not know the score at all.
This is every shade of fu*kin' awesome there is.
This is what people should be doing with technology. Harmony and cooperation will get us much further than hate and competition. Listen to the music.
This was the Doobie Brothers 1st big hit, released on their 2nd album in July 1972. 48 years ago.
It's so incredible that they sound as good and fresh as they did almost 50 years ago! This group is a national treasure and long overdue getting into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!!!
They're in the RRHOF as of this year! The 2020 induction ceremony was delayed until the fall due to the pandemic.
Incredible. Most underrated rock band ever imo. Tom Johnston is the best voice you could ask for. Thanks guys. Love ya!
I don't think they are a underrated band
These guys are a REAL LEGEND.
The Doobie Brothers are more active than what you think
👍
Underrated?! You must have missed the 70’s.
They're definitely not underrated. Back in the day they had a ton of hits and radio time.
Got chills when Pat came in on the lead vocals.
America, we'll be okay. Listen to the music. 🇺🇸✌❤
Just brilliant. Even after all these years, just exquisite sound coming from the Doobies!
They are perfection at its best!
@@TheCheryl57 Yes awesome. Tom has a voice!
You guys sound fantastic...listened to you since I was a kid...never gets old. Keep on rockin!
I could listen that chorus a hundred million times, and it would never get old. Great work guys!
What a brilliant band how about doing a few more gigs in the UK there are more places than London
@@markfitzpatrick9021 They will play where they are confident they can sell out venues. Contact their management. No-one will see this.
I think back to the days when these guys were selling out stadiums, and my impression of the super-star, jet-setting life style that I imagined they led back then............Then I see this video and realize that for the most part they live the same kind of down home life that most of us live...........the dog sleeping on the couch......one of their wives walking up the driveway with a cup of coffee. Having trouble finding words to express exactly what I am trying to say. I guess for the most part, just now realizing that they are normal people just like the rest of us........after having been starstruck by them for so many years. Makes me feel good.
Musically 'killing it' after 40-50 years. That doesn't happen with 70 year old sports stars!
Byron Bay Music fest 2017 Standout performance!!!
Best comment!!!!
So true B!- wish i said that!
It happens with 70 yr old musicians, though.
Tom Johnson has never sounded better.
... he really does sound crisp doesn't he, they all do, marvelous after all of these years and the changes in the band... applauding and standing here... again, thanks for posting.
He said he realized his voice is an instrument and needs to take care of it, so he does vocal exercises when he isn't touring, rests it during concert season, and warms it up before a show. He never did that in the heyday of the Doobies!
Mostly non smokers survive w pipes to sing on & on..Alohaas
I Love Chemistry I’d love to see/hear what vocal exercises he’s found works for him. He’s sounding absolutely spot on.
GOD I DO MISS THE DOOBIE BROTHER'S BAND!
Best thing to come out of the Covid “pandemic”
Man, I'm 63 in September, and this just brings the memories flooding back to my teenage years, thanks guys, I really appreciate your music. Keep Safe, much love, from Wales. 💖
I'm 62 and from Newcastle Upon Tyne like you the Dobbies and also the Eagles were the brilliant soundtrack of my youth. 👍
60 here and used to play drums in a band in the 70's. We covered a few of the Doobie songs - many many memories also!
This makes 2020 feel not so bad. The Doobie Brothers still rocking and I was alive to see it.
Congratulations on your induction to the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. Been a fan since 1974. Keep on keeping on!
Banjo adds a nice new feature to this song ..... Excellent
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!
Love the banjo in this classic!
Great guys. Had tickets for West Palm Bch before the world collapsed. How about Takin it to the Streets with Michael on board
.....I was 12 yeas old back then, now I am 60....I still listen to the music all the time!!
I was obsessed with them when I was little, dad knew, he is the one that exposed and taught me music. When I was old enough (17 in the about 1997) for my birthday Iwe were going to see my band......dyslexia runs deep in my family, he had a "momen", bless his heart it was the moody blues (I loved then also).....if he wasn't such a goofy guy he would have been so upset. He was a great man, I love this story!
Toms voice is still just like the original recording. Such natural talent by them that needs to come back today and stay. Peace and joy
The CZcams algorithm came up good this time.
This is what we need people.
Love to you all!
after all these years, the voice still sounds fantastic.
Love it, Allan. Need more PSA content!
Just as beautiful as the the first time I heard it in the 70s ..... please do a re-release of Jesus is just alright with me it is so inspirational and just what people need today
Jeff, I thought the same thing. I always loved that group, because they had it all over with great harmony, and guitar parts, and bass etc.
John McFee is one of the most underrated guitalists in the history.
Guitarist, banjoist, fiddle-player...
@@LainieWA steel player lol
Plays flute too
That's correct!
Yes!
Forgot all about the world’s woes ... simply by “listening to the music” ... thank you Doobies for all the great tunes!!
That voice, the harmonies, the banjo, that baseline 👌 ... I think these guys will go far
they have, they're the Doobie Brothers
Every once in a while I find myself coming back here just to "Listen To The Music"☺️🎧🎵🎶
I love the banjo in this, it shifts the song's whole feel in such a lovely way.
The banjo is present in the original, too; it's just not as obvious because it's only during the chorus, and it's not as prominent in the mix. It does shift the feel of the song quite a bit to have it front-and-center, especially in an acoustic set where it's not competing with amplified electric guitars and a drum kit. :)
I agree that’s what I love about this version.
@@ballyastrocade5672 Patrick Simmons played the banjo on the original. John McFee has done the banjo playing since he's come back (a long time ago, but no one but Patrick has been there continuously). It's great to have someone in a band like John who besides guitar can also play banjo, violin, mandolin, pedal steel guitar, essentially anything with strings.
Yes, nice to "freshen up" a song by changing it sonically instead of the usual speedup that makes you think they just want to get it over with.
Agree , loved it too .
Wow, Tom's voice hasn't lost a beat, there are very few guys who can still sound like they did 40+ years ago. Thank you for a great performance.
Well, they did transpose it down a but it certainly sounds very good. I kinda like like the lower pitch actually
So True The Real Singer Of The Doobies `not Malcolm Mc Donald
@@raymondtovey3722 do you mean Michael McDonald 😂
@@raymondtovey3722 Michael McDonald commercialized their sound, in my opinion. I lost interest. They're roaring back now, the way it used to be.
que maravilla de voz.. desde Chile
Best song ever I was born in 1973
I am 49 Years old & My brought up was with Doobie Brothers 'Listen to the Music'
To sound that good live after all these years, that is pure talent, just wow.
Holy Geezus. That’s a lot of talent coming together making that sound. Damn
Yeah, the early '70's are still rolling on! Thanks guys.
I love that song! Thank you, Anders in SWEDEN
I've seen them live twice in the last 3 years ... once where they opened for Chicago and they completely blew Chicago off the stage. Considering these guys are in their 70's they are simply incredibly talented musicians still after 50 years in the business.
yeah you would think after 50 years of playing they would be terrible!
Tom Johnston’s voice hasn’t changed a bit! Long live The Doobies!!!
You've got to be kidding me... unbelievable quality, endless talent.
Holy Shit, this song from1972, must say and I hate to say this I was 17, this is my new genre and listening to these folks doing their thing virtually is just plain awesome, Thanks to all the Great Bands bringing us some good tunes in bad times, Thanks Ladies and Gents and Keep em Coming.....
PS. You guys sound freaking like the day I first heard this song!!!!!
Like everyone else is saying, these guys can still nail it.
The Doobies are an American treasure and one of the best bands in rock history!
Awesome ..Thanks guys..classic tune..you guys nailed it..
We luv the Doobie Brothers in Cookeville,Tenn.😁👍🇱🇷❤️🎸🎶🍺🍸🎩🌻☎️🍄
Two thumbs up for the extra banjo in this arrangement!
Anything with the Doobie's automatically gets a thumbs up from me. One of my favorite groups of all time.
In the golden era of arena rock -- this was a summertime anthem.
We really need some new music from these great musicians! Their type of music just does not die!
Tom Johnston is my favorite voice to try to impersonate doing karaoke!
Don't you even think that you will ha!
Sorry dear..
Keep trying
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BAND....50TH ANNIV CONCERT POSTPONED TILL NEXT YEAR....FEATURING MICHAEL MCDONALD....WORTH THE WAIT....GOT MY TICKETS...THESE SONGS SONGS ARE THE SOUNDTRACT OF MY LIFE !!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
One of those rare perfect songs.
I'm 61. Takes me back to when I was 14 years old. Thank you.
This music takes me back to my youth in the 70's. Nothing transports me back as much as Doobies.
Me too, back to my senior year at College. (1972).
And they sound the same!
One of the most uplifting tunes of all time. Who doesn't love them some Doobies. Thanks, men.
SmartyThe Pants lol
That was beautiful gentlemen!!! Black Water isolated is incredible as well! We are coming to Raleigh to see you guys on the 31st!! We just can't wait to see you!! You are true heartfelt musicians, and you've touched our souls for a very long time!! Best of luck on the rest of the tour!! We love you!! Ciao! Benedica!!
We love the Doobies in Cookeville to.👍😁🇱🇷❤️🎶🎸🍺✌️
I remember a while back Tom talks about his percussive strumming and it sounds amazing when he starts strumming
yes indeed the TJ signiture strum..if you could get that right and get the muting right on the money it opens up a lot to Doobie Brothers cover playing I find.. it's like the classic Keith Richards hammer on in open G. he uses that all the time hammer on those two fingers...
It's amazing...
I remember him saying when he was learning to play guitar, he moved his right wrist quickly to emulate the drums, he always called it his chucka chucka style.
Allways. Off the hook, toast to the most
Fantastic ! All those years singing and me 71 years OLS and I had this evening a concert on my I- pad!🎶🎶🎶🎶🕊🕊🦋🦋🦋✨✨✨🙏catharinaketelaar ⭐️
DOOBIE BROTHER'S R JUST AS GOOD AS THEY WE'RE IN THE 70'S, IN MY OPINION!
