- The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band from San Jose, California. Active for five decades, with their greatest success in the 1970s, the group's current lineup consists of founding members Tom Johnston (guitars, vocals) and Patrick Simmons (guitars, vocals), veteran member Michael McDonald (keyboards, vocals), longtime member John McFee (guitars, pedal steel, violin, backing vocals), and touring musicians including John Cowan (bass, vocals), Bill Payne (keyboards), Marc Russo (saxophones), Ed Toth (drums), and Marc Quiñones (percussion).
The band's history can be roughly divided into three eras. From 1970 to 1975 it featured lead vocalist Johnston and a mainstream rock and roll sound with elements of folk, country and R&B. Johnston quit the group in 1977, and was replaced by Michael McDonald, whose interest in soul music changed the band's sound until it broke up in 1982 with Simmons being the only constant member having appeared on all of their albums. In 1987, the Doobie Brothers reformed with Johnston back in the fold; McDonald, who had previously made several guest appearances since their reformation, returned to the band full-time in 2019 for their upcoming 50th anniversary tour. Every incarnation of the group has emphasized vocal harmonies. The Doobie Brothers were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, and will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on May 2, 2020. The group has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. Founding members John Hartman and Dave Shogren, Tiran Porter, Michael Hossack, Keith Knudsen and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter are former members of the band.
In this video the line up is: Tom Johnston (guitar, vocals)
, Patrick Simmons (guitar)
, John Hartman (drums),
Tiran Porter (bass),
Keith Knudsen (drums) and Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter (guitar)
The Doobie Brothers performed on the Warner Brothers Tour in Amsterdam (Jaap Edenhall) on 29 January 1975 and visited the Toppop studios to record this song.
This Toppop recording was first broadcast on 7 February 1975.

Saw these last night with my 74 year old father as the doobie bros was supporting the eagles..He was in his element.
A time when you actually understood the lyrics. 70's rocked. Great time to have grown up in.
I love this song and older music. But I can’t lie, I don’t hear half the words
This is the Doobie Brothers I liked best: Tommy, Patty, Tiran, Skunk, as well as the double drum attack; John Hartman and Michael Hossack, and later Keith here.

This is not a song, it's a generation's anthem! So glad to have grown in the 70s and 80s. Nothing compares to it.
Same here ❤
Corect!👍👏👏👏❤
Hey im 42 and I like this song also.
Yes!! 1970 - perfectly “placed” for growing up.
Boomers should've let the bills get paid instead. Perhaps we wouldn't be in such crippling national debt. I love this song, clearly, but this blind optimism led to generations of weaklings and poor fiscal policy which has sent us into a national death spiral.
Another 70s gem. What a decade truly.
Fabulosa década musical ❤❤❤
The best decade!! My favorito in music,fashion...
I was a teenager. I was lucky.
Great music from the 70s
Done this one at music workshop. Good piece. No complicated chords either.
This song is so great that even the microphone is dancing.
I noticed that as well! ;)
All those mics are dancin' away......
🤣🤣🤣🤣
By Jove, I think you're right!!!😊🌱🌹
Also the stage!😁
I was 9 when this song debuted. I’m now 58 and it feels like 49 years have flown by, and I’m lucky enough to still be here, to continue to “listen to the music.”
I listened to some of the Doobies Brothers music and then my mother bought me an album. Been a fan ever since
Same her buddy !
I was 18 and went to see Steve Miller band at winterland San Francisco. Can't remember who the second band was but Doobies we're openers. Heard this song and it was on. Seen them about 15 xs. Met Tom and Pat in Santa Cruz several years ago and they were good humble dudes. Never cared much for McDonald. Way different sound.
😎
I’m 68 and yes 50 years disappeared in the blink of an eye!
As a Millenial, kinda bummed I missed this whole vibe - so dang chill man. Thankful to have a parent raise me on these tunes though🤘
you are the reason people hated millenials
Can u convince everyone else your age of the same? That would be wonderful.
I grew up on this music and play it all the time. My teen daughters are bringing it back! You can too😊 It's quite healing and brings feeling of love and unity WE NEED!
My son says the same thing.
My boys have a metal band they are Awesome I hang out with them .and it astounds me that they cover this timeline music ......must of stayed awake more than I thought when we were listening to the best tunes ever !

No auto tune back then, just pure talent and love of the magic.
You called that right. You have a good ear for music.
Right? This takes me back to my childhood.
I've been diagnosed as suffering from major depression, When ever I listen to this , all my sadness and troubles disappear, and my spirit soars high, I feel thrilled and dance in real or in my mind ..
Keep listening to music, walk in nature and heal.
@@highlander1194 Thank you so much... "Walk in Nature" ... Dunno if you meant that literally, but yes those moments are prescious.. early morn, just before break of dawn,, holy stillness around, walking bare foot on the grass feeling the dewdrops, feel connection with the Trees around... Everything seems so alive , connected together and made for each other.... Earth Sky breeze the trees , and me...
@aditi banerjee yes, if you access to woods, parks, rivers etc. It does wonders for me. The connection with nature.
I have suffered with my nerves all life but I have got over it at 66., keep fighting and you can get over it like me.
Hang in there. I've had recent tragedy in my life but I keep going. The sadness I have would double for the others in my family if I were do something to myself. It's difficult but we get through it. I'm praying you find peace.
I had the pleasure of seeing The Doobie Brothers live last night and they were brilliant. Sounded incredible and full of joyous energy.
I’m listening in 2024 , just like you and I , good music never gets old
Over 50 years old and this tune is still as prominent and meaningful as it was back then...a timeless classic 😍👌
Home Free covered it and man they did it justice....This and Black Water were always my favorites (followed closely by China Grove)
Essa música tem mais de 50 anos? 😮
@@pauloleone9809 sim, é meu amigo! I'm English so i hope i got that correct 😁👌
I wouldn't say timeless... this is unmistakably 70's by a group that hasn't fully woken up from the 60's.
@@aut0turret What?! Do you even understand what timeless means as far as music goes? It means that it will live on as a fantastic, recognizable song through many generations...unless people are as ignorant as you!
Just because they were a 70s band and quite possibly still living in the 60s, it doesn't mean that they didn't produce some TIMELESS music!
Anyway, i don't really care, happy new year to you and yours wherever you are in the world ❤️
This song always makes me happy. Thank you, Doobie Brothers.

Absolutely correct
Great song and great singing a classic song
It’s sure a “ feel good “ song, love it and the Doobie’s

Been homeless since May, had a beautiful young thing, no business being homeless, but she was, came and sat next to me, she told me to play some music, and I played this, we just laughed joyfully through the whole song.

Take a lesson youngins', this is a song!
Even when The Doobie Brothers perform LIVE their harmonies are spot on! Singers of this era who "cheat" by using auto-tune will never reach the level of a true artist who can just sing and get it right. The Doobie Brothers will forever ROCK!🤘
I so much agree 150%, performers like the Doobie Brothers, were the real deal.
I agree 💯%, some artists just look for an easy way out.
Agreed!
Whilst a wonderful song, be aware that this is not a live performance..it is the album version.
The irony of this comment when this isn't them performing live is pure comedy, get off the high horse and just enjoy the music. There are tons of bands who play live and sound good you just wouldn't know about them cause you're in a vacuum.

Don't you feel it growin', day by day
People gettin' ready for the news
Some are happy, some are sad
Oh, we gotta let the music play
What the people need
Is a way to make 'em smile
It ain't so hard to do if you know how
Gotta get a message
Get it on through
Oh, now mama's go'n' to after 'while
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
All the time
Well I know, you know better
Everything I say
Meet me in the country for a day
We'll be happy
And we'll dance
Oh, we're gonna dance our blues away
And if I'm feelin' good to you
And you're feelin' good to me
There ain't nothin' we can't do or say
Feelin' good, feeling fine
Oh, baby, let the music play
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
All the time
Like a lazy flowing river
Surrounding castles in the sky
And the crowd is growing bigger
List'nin' for the happy sounds
And I have to let them fly
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
Oh, oh, listen to the music
All the time
