If this doesn't make you smile, I don't know what will. Tom Johnston: your vocals are just heavenly, replete with spine-tingling awesomeness. And whenever I see Frampton these days, he emits such joy when he plays and sings, it truly warms the heart. Thank you gents for this magic.
and the bass line... Love it!
YESSSSSSS!!!!!! INCREDIBLE Happiness with tears rolling down my cheeks!! Needed this so, so BAAD!! THANK YOU Rob Arthur!!
Grew up with the Doobies in NorCal, and Frampton was junior year in high school. Seen them both live in the past few years, including Frampton's farewell tour in Paso Robles. I like them staying apolitical, which makes me suspect they think like me. LOL
I was going to post the exact same thing.
@WJB Motown We saw him 3 years ago in Virginia with Cheap Trick as the opening act. He was fantastic.

So true.

Amazing how someone can take a PERFECT song and make it better.
You know it brother!¡
God, I love seeing Peter Frampton awash in the pure joy of playing!
All these guys look like they're having a great time. :-) That's one thing I've always noticed and enjoyed about the Doobie Brothers when I've seen them in concert -- you never get the impression that they're just going through the motions, or are thinking "aw, man, we gotta play *this* song again for the millionth time" when they play one of their "big" hits. Pat Simmons, in particular, always seems to be wearing this huge grin throughout the show, like *any* night he gets to perform is just the *best* night of his life. :-)
Right on, brother!
Universally acclaimed to be the nicest guy in rock music.
Yes!!! That's what makes this even more awesome.
@@ballyastrocade5672 in recent years I've seen Grand Funk and they play the same set, same order, same amount of time and no encore. Its like

One of my favorite songs Ever. Frampton Always comes Alive! I have been honored to see both bands. Thank You. Thank You very much✌
I would like to see a tour of The Doobie Brothers and Peter Frampton performing together on stage playing this song and their music as a collaboration act.
Patrick Simmons is such a great guitarist and vocalist. ..
One of the original 5 Doobie Brothers..Love Pat
Just brilliant. Nice to see Peter still playing, as he was doing his farewell tour just before all this crap happened and we all wish him and of course the Doobies well as well.
Awesome guys my mind was just rambling back to 1970-71 keep on jammin
Me too. Frampton has a degenerative muscular disease that supposedly was affecting him which is why he gave up touring. He can still play guitar thankfully. Hopefully his disease won't get worse.
@@nelsonc6173 is he going on music cruise with Bonamassa, or did it get cancelled?
Norris Freedman Really? Did not know. Can’t see him going a music cruise now. Who would go? Floating MASH unit.

I never get tired of watching this. Bless you Doobies and Peter Frampton for sharing such an uplifting gift.
Ive probably rewatched this 50+ times since it was released and it never gets old. Hands down my fav 'cover tune' of all time. Can you imagine Clapton watching this for the first time? He had to be smiling ear to ear and sooo proud.
And yes, that's Peter's "Frampton Comes Alive" Les Paul. Great story behind that guitar!
You are correct that’s the guitar I think was found on an island after the plane carrying their instruments crashed Peter had it rebuilt
It was stolen and he got it back...thank God!
It's so great seeing him reunited with that guitar! Didn't he use that on most of the Frampton Comes Alive stuff?

The Doobies and Frampton. I would have never thought, but how cool is that!
Look..who would have thought Joe Walsh with the Eagles?
@@harrygaul4475 Fair enough, perhaps. What an absolutely exceptional match and fitting that has been, over the decades, though.
Who Needs Micheal Mc Donald This Is The Real Doobies Loverly
I'm cool with Michael too but yes this a great performance and do hope to catch the rescheduled tour.
@@raymondtovey3722 Lets not forget that Micheal McDonald saved The Dobbie Brothers a lot of cash after Tom Johnston came down with health problems during the middle of the "Stampede" tour back in '75 and had to be hospitalized for several months as a result. If Micheal hadn't stepped in and took Tom's place, the band would have been on the hook for several millions of dollars in contract fines to promoters for having to cancel shows. Tom Johnston awknowledged this himself and that's why he considers Michael McDonald a Dobbie regardless of what the critics say. Eventhough he prefers not to sing any of McDonald's songs out of respect for his blue eye soul vocal talents.
This damn near made me cry it's so good. And so needed.

The ultimate sideman, much like Bob Mayo was for Frampton.

He was awesome in Southern Pacific.
I agree 100%. The man is a talent!

He always does when he's playing.
He sure does!!

@@larryhinze8658 I think he is here in Nashville, that’s where he’s living mostly now.
My favorite version of this song.
"......and 10,000 guitarists fall to the wayside." While many focus to attain speed on the fretboard, they sacrifice the great opportunity to see how mammoth melody, phrasing, and choice notes, and tone are so essential to make real, authentic, and groundwork music. Speed has its place, but first things first. These cats are so seasoned and their vocals are just fantastic. We're talking about stellar iconic voices here. Everything is just cream of the crop. Young guitarists, just take the time to copy all these licks.. they will guide you in all other aspects.
Here Here 👏👏👏👏👏
Well said. Playing guitar isn't a race to see how many notes can be played in 3 minutes. Git, you stated it perfectly.

I'm not at all a fan of 'covers", especially ANYONE who dares to cover Eric Clapton. But this is the BEST cover of ANY Clapton song I've ever heard.
Bill Payne on the keyboards, glad to see he is still playing with the Dobbie Brothers!!
Little Feat, a great R & R boogie band. RIP Lowell George.
The Doobies are, as always brilliant. And despite his health problems, the excellent Peter Frampton has lost nothing (except perhaps those flowing locks). Pretty good match putting them together. Enjoyed that greatly.
Peter has mentioned that his "Teen Beat" looks were a sort of dagger in his career's back of sorts. He became the poster on every Jr high & HS Girl's bedroom wall...nice recongnition..."but hey, i also play this guitar pretty well, too."
@@kilgoretrout3966 I see how that is true. As a teen girl I thought he was a "Fox" haha. As an old in years but never growing up woman, I am so blown away by his playing in way that I could not appreciate before. And he still looks good to me, lol, probably because he seems to be so joyful!
@@aashapagann2700 i absolutely agree with everything you've said, Aasha! i am a childish old man :) You are so right, the pure and abundant joy you see on his face playing music warms the heart and bring a smile to the face. You have to love him, he is a treasure!
Frampton is a much better guitar player than many know. He’s also paid he’s dues. His body of work should speak for itself but is overlooked far to often.
This is what real music sounds like.
Real musicians doing what they love and sounding incredible.
No cursing. No violence. No mumbling talentless creeps babbling about hos and niggas and drugs and guns waving money around.
So nice and refreshing listening to professionals.
I have to add o e more comment. I can’t get over how amazing this is. The unsung heroes are the producers and audio engineers. To do audio production like this is amazingly difficult and requires incredible artistic ability and experience. Wow!
Yes! Who are the sound engineers? Where recorded? What gear, software, etc.!
That, it does. i know people ping-pong tracks across the country, even in non-covid days, but to seamlessly assemble all these parts, and put a video to it from multiple locations is a hell of a chore!
Tom Johnson one of the best voices in rock history! Very distinct voice stands out and he sings so effortlessly! Great cover of a great Clapton song! These were simpler times and I'm so glad I was a teenager in the 70's great live music with no auto-tune bs or anything else! This was a time when musicians actually played their instruments! Hats off to Peter Frampton as well another great voice! I believe I first heard Peter when he played lead guitar at the age of 17 yrs old with "Humble Pie" best to all of you! No God, No Peace, Know God, Know Peace!

Amen, just an old hippie here and grew up with this music - went to all the great concerts - except the Beatles & Cream - never got to see the Beatles or Cream live, but was at the "record store" on the 1st day every time the Beatles or EC came out with a new record. Saw Led Zeppelin twice - best 2 concerts - ever. Saw the Doobies who continued making great music a long time after their early days - I remember their album from 1989 I think, being one of my favorites, also Little Feat, CSNY, Humble Pie (without Frampton - RIP Steve) and Allman Bros in the early to mid 70's. We went to the Peter Frampton comes alive tour in Austin in the summer of 76 with America, Santana and Gary Wright... back when music was real and people were free! Great music and concerts back then.... Pity the young kids growing up these days without "our" and that gangster thug cRap not-music..... except when they come back home and they still get to hear OUR "music!" #JesusIsTheSonOfGod

time for a revival...Rock and Roll can never die, unless we let it.
Great seeing Frampton still playing his legendary 54 Les Paul. The story behind that guitar is miraculous. In 1980 this guitar was on a separate cargo flight which crashed near Caracas, Venezuela (obviously, Frampton was not on the flight). The guitar was thought to have been lost but was actually retrieved from the wreckage mostly intact albeit with some burn marks on it. After years of negotiations, it was finally sold back to Frampton for $5,000 in 2011.
I heard about him losing the guitar, this is the first time I've seen him play it.
@@paultucker8758 There's something really special about keeping old guitars like that. To this day I deeply regret selling my first electric. It was a Dakota Red,1965 Fender Music Master II I bought for $45 in 1977 when I was 15. I sold it 12 yrs later for $500 because I needed the money. I NEVER should have sold it...
that is dirt cheap, id have bought it for that, and given it to Peter.
30 years of negotiations and only 5K? That sounds so crazy.

My first Peter Frampton album was in 1974, the “Something’s Happening” album. The first track on it is Doobie Wah and immediately loved it. Peter paying homage even then was fantastic. So great to see them working together today. It’s particularly awesome they’re doing one of Eric’s finest songs. They all sound as good, if not better than they ever have. Tom’s voice still sounds just the same all these years later. After losing so many of our musical heroes lately, in particular Eddie Van Halen, this makes me really appreciate every note I hear from any of them even more. God bless you guys and thanks for all the incredible music. 🙏👍🏻 Oh and get Frampton’s new book, it’s such a great read!

Doobies (without Michael) have been my favorite band since the early 70's and they continue to make great music. The singing, crying guitars on this are beautiful. I love this song, but even more with them playing.
And Frampton...OMG....hearing him sing, and seeing him play, especially with THAT guitar, what a huge bonus....
*****UPDATE*****
Thanks to my beautiful wife, we got to see them in Phoenix in October 2022...they sounded as great as they ever did, and we were only maybe 15 feet from Mike Mcdonald.....
Wow-had to pinch myself just to make sure I hadn't died and gone to heaven! The Doobies AND Frampton together doing one of my absolute favorite Clapton tunes?! This is SO special! Brilliant job by everyone. My first concert ever? Yes--the Doobies, Frampton and REO Speedwagon at Winterland in SF! The Vices tour, man everyone was playing some serious guitar back then--and still are! So glad to hear Peter play and it was such a beautiful thing to have his prized Black Beauty returned to him after all those years. He's one of my influences and so are my heroes the Doobies. Thanks for returning me to my roots in California-Palo Alto and Chico in the middle of this pandemic. It does a heart good! Thank you!
AMAZING! I've played it 5 times already!
I'm right there with you, Kenny!
I'm 10 times and my day of discovery is not over...I'm good for at least one more!
LMAO - I got the link in my email from a former bandmate a few minutes ago....
There goes any possibility of productivity today,
Now I am going to be lost in youtube music heaven all day.
Awesome sauce!
500 x this week on autoplay ,my wife is away lucky me
Peter, you old sly dog! That was Billy Payne on the piano! Haven't heard a lick from him since I saw Little Feat's 50th Anniversary concert. Tommy's still got it as well ... the Doob's are always spot on! Did this old guy's heart a lot of good, brother. Thank you.
Frampton's playing is as tasty as ever.
This is perfection. Absolute perfection. Wow, wow, wow. Blown away. Truly. Incredible. I can't say enough.
It's been another rough night, and the pain in my body sends me into depression. I needed a lift. ... Then I saw this, and being a devoted Clapton fan I had to listen. I knew you guys would do the song justice. And, you really did. Great musicianship and the joy radiating from this video is exactly what I needed right now. I'd like to tell you how much I needed this right now, but all I can say is "Thank you".
I hope you are better now..
Margaret Beard, thank you. The pain won't be going away, but I manage it. More importantly I have been successful in finding help for the depression. So, I'm quite good. I wish everyone who suffers from depression could find the help they need. Take care.
Can I love this version better than the original? Yes I can....... something about a musical call back from the old pros that's just satisfying.
They should record a whole album paying tribute to Eric Clapton's songbook and crossing guitars. So wonderful songs to record with a powerful rock sound like they do with Let it rain: Blues Power, Tulsa Time, Promises, Lay Down Sally, Slow Down Linda, Rita Mae, She's gone, Forever Man, Something Special, Singing the Blues...
Yes, you may.
im not much of a 70s Clapton fan. Not his best era performance wise, but to semi quote Rick James, Heroin is a hell of a drug.
I always loved the Doobs... and Peter Frampton. To see them doing such a great cover of Clapton is a wonderful treat. What an amazing performance... and they looked like they were having way too much fun! What a joy to behold!
Got that "Captain and Me" vibe!
Who says nothing good has come out of 2020!?!?!? Here you have it right here!!!! Pretty sure the smile on my face will last the remainder of the year! Awesome job guys!!!!
I was just thinking the same thing!
It may be 2020.... but these aren't 2020 musicians. These guys actually have talent.
All these musician collaborations this year are a nice treat
EC, for the first time listening and thinking: "Yeah, that'll do."
Bad-ass performance.
What a "dream team" I can't stop hearing that song ...
And that my friends is rock and roll! I have no words to describe how good that was.and thank you.and I demand you do one of those a week! Pretty please?
Slow hand is smiling proudly at this amazing rendition Keep this up guys. Y'all sound as GOOD AS EVER.
What I love about this is that no one dominates the video..As a group effort, everybody plays their part..
that is what a real band is.....the sound rules
Way better than the synthetic garbage on the radio today
Bought tears to my eyes! Thank you fine gentlemen for sharing your respective musical gifts with us. Just beautiful 👍🏻👍🏻
I'm sooo glad to have been a teenager in the 70s!...And they still have it.
THAT was excellent. 😊🎶🎸🎸🎸
Frampton... so underrated 💖
We've been praying for you peter. It's just wonderful to see and hear you . Glad to see you're still using the miracle LP from FCA that was lost for years after a plane crash and then returned to you decades later.
Also thank you Doobie brothers for posting so many fantastic videos on CZcams during the pandemic. What a blessing your music has been to me since 1975
Agreed. Great music. Praying for you Peter.
