As someone who sucked their thumb (at home only, not a public monster like this lady), I can attest it was 100% an anxiety coping mechanism. After finally getting properly diagnosed and medicated the need for it fell off immediately.
My wife is the same. Does it at night when sheâs getting really sleepy. Sheâs on meds (same as me) but still does it. I donât personally think itâs worth trying to fuss over getting her to stop. It comforts her and thatâs all that matters to me. â€ïž
I've heard it's when something tramatic happened to u when u were young. When ur that age when u suck ur thumb.
@@evlfck Thatâs a form of stimming and you shouldnât be embarrassed about it, especially if it does help you in any way. I have ADD and recently found out Iâm Autistic (did not know any of this growing up) and sometimes would feel embarrassed if I started stimming around others without realizing it. I sucked my thumb until I was 16....but NEVER in public. I stopped when I got my braces (which I paid for myself at 16). It's a coping mechanism that is really hard to break.
I too also sucked my thumb when I was a baby and finally stopped in 6th grade. I am glad that Iâm not the only one who had this struggle and yes, it was a coping mechanism and a form of comfort.

I love the bitter flavor of coffee, the refreshing part for me is the unique taste of the cream mixed with the bitter flavor of unsweetened coffee. Refreshing can also mean reviving, therefore it revives your energy.
I was addicted until I was 13. It was comfort for my severe anxiety disorder but I always got super sick from always having it in my mouth as a kid and young teen. I eventually got an expander because my mouth was too small for all my teeth and they had to put a little ball on the top of my mouth that literally force stopped me doing it. I have this weird scar like tissue on the top of my thumb from sucking on it all the time, probably from my teeth truthfully.
Same here, except I stopped when I was 12 when I got my expander put in and then I got my braces afterwards. The oral pain I had from sucking my thumb from then on made me quit cold turkey

My sister used to suck her thumb just like this until she was almost 20, she also had a small piece of fabric (the hat of a bunny toy with a hole in the middle for the ears, basically a ring of fabric) that she'd hold onto as she sucked. Unfortunately it had a severe effect on her teeth, and now as an adult she has a visible gap between her top and bottom front teeth, and as her front teeth are so small she really struggles to bite into things like apples.
Odds her thatâs just how her teeth formed, they donât cause gaps in your teeth it would be an overbite.
It's sexual/physical abuse self soothing mechanism. Me and several friends have done it. The "blanket/blankee" thing is a throwback to when as little kids - we hid under a blanket to sheild our minds and souls whilst the abuse took place. I truly hope she gets help for the trauma - then the coping mechanisms fall away like snakeskin so that they can grow
@@randomnetfiend firstly, abuse is not limited to being sexual/physical. secondly, it's a self soothing mechanism for ANY reason, not just being abused. people get trauma from places other than abuse, and self soothing gestures don't require having any previous traumas. some people simply have anxiety, no trauma needed. saying that people can only do self soothing when they've gone through severe trauma is harmful because it invalidates everyone else. also, coping mechanisms usually are needed throughout life for literally everyone, mental illness or not, because of any number of reasons, such as stress. generally coping mechanisms for a person change throughout their life, but they're still there to self soothe. people who use zero coping mechanisms end up being abusive to themselves and/or others.
tldr; please dont invalidate other people's experiences and self-soothing techniques/coping mechanisms by saying they always come from trauma

Facts about coffee being water down. I grew up in a coffee shop as a child and I do love coffee a lot. I can't go to cafes for coffee like Starbucks because its way to water and its usually full of syrup. I make cold brews at home and make sure to make it very strong. @ 11:00 My realestate agent here (bc Canada) was licenced to inspect my families recent purchase of a 5 acre estate and had been coming by to do yard work and maintinence since the sale since the home was from 1910 and is a historical landmark in the area. I think it depends on the agent. If youâre getting a cheap agent obviously itâll be a poor service, and it depends what scale of home youâre looking to purchase in what price range.
I like how they totally passed over the part where she said âthereâs a part of me that likes the attention - and thatâs why I do it.â
I have been a senior barista at a "specialty coffee" cafe IN LA for over a year now. The coffee culture is crazy in LA. $10 for 1 coffee is hilarious. Also, I learned the drink "americano" was named that whenever the US soldiers were in Europe back in one of the World Wars and couldn't take how strong the "coffee" was there. So they would ask to water down the espresso. So after hundres of soliders requesting this they created the drink Americano. LOL
âOh right, we were watching a videoâ Pretty much sums up all of the Ken/Felix collabs đ
as someone who sucked their thumb til about 13, also probably related to my parents divorce, the blanket for me was a sensory thing. I used to do the same thing with the strings on my blanket, I would rub it on my nose. It was comforting. So while many people make fun of this girl I can understand where she is coming from. Doesnt mean she shouldn't seek help from a therapist though.

This totally reminds me of me as a kid, I didn't stop sucking my thumb until 1st grade and my favorite blanket 'disappeared' one day. Found out later my mom took the advice of her friend and hid it from me. She ended up not telling me until I was in my mid twenties ish and I was so mad đ but that was mostly because my blanket was not the reason I sucked my thumb so it 'disappearing' just made me sad, it didn't stop me from sucking my thumb at all. It wasn't until I got caught by the one classmate who liked to make a big deal out of everything so that he could get the attention of the class. Sufficed to say, I was totally embarrassed and ashamed (mortified really lol) and I went cold turkey after that. My parents were so relieved because all the adults in my life took it upon themselves to try to help me stop but I never cared once, they just annoyed me and made me more stubborn than anything else lol. So, yay for peer pressure, public shaming, and bullying, I guess? đ€ đ
Yep, that's why "bullying" is such an important cultural thing.
Ohhh. I'm 23 and I still suck my thumb. It's a coping mechanism for me as I suffer from childhood trauma. Alot of people probably think it's weird and I know it's not normal for a grown woman to suck her thumb since she's not a child and that it's bad for your teeth but that's a way to soothe yourself at least for me it is. My parents tried everything to wean me off thumb sucking when I got older and they realized I was still doing it but it didn't matter what they did to stop me from sucking my thumb I'd still do it and I have been my whole life. I'm glad to know that there's other adults who still does this too and it's not only me. I try not to do it in public since people would see and judge but I will do it around friends and family cause they don't care.
I agree with Felix about coffee. I actually really dislike the smell and taste of coffee though. I get asked out often and it's more often than not suggested that we should get coffee some time. This is when I get to attempt to show my disinterest in going on a coffee date by stating that I don't like or drink coffee. Of course that doesn't work, they ask if I like tea, which I do, and then say we can go get tea instead. I've received the reaction of "you don't like coffee??? Why not, it's great?", to which I just say that I simply have never liked it and highly doubt at my age I ever will.
Sucking your thumb is an anxiety response*sometimes*, really sucks how much people get made fun of for it
My partner has told me if I've had a nightmare my first response is to suck my thumb like when I was a kid. I didn't even know I did this until he told me I don't even have memory of this either. Iâm autistic and have a lot of stiming behaviors and I do sympathize with her in ways. I donât suck my thumb, but I do have my childhood bear still. However, there are certain stims that I only do in the comfort of my home and other ones that I feel comfortable with doing in public (such as playing with squishy stretchy small toys, stress balls, fidget toys, popper silicone toys, etc.). Before I was diagnosed as an adult (women and girls are very under diagnosed because ASD, ADHD, and neurodiverse behaviors present differently between girls and boys) and discovered ways that I function best, I would stim by fiddling with whatever was there, especially my hair and face. Iâm so much happier and more productive now.
I adopted my brothers stuffed bear. The bear is 30 years old. He goes on vacations with me .
We suspect my daughter is on the spectrum she has over 200 bears, she finds comfort in them as well each has a name and she remembers them all but sheâs never sucked her thumb
I've never been diagnosed with anything, but I always have to have something to fiddle with. I literally can't talk correctly without it. My stutter comes out if I have nothing, even if it's just fiddling with the edge of my clothes or hair, and it makes me feel like I suddenly have a mouth full of cotton.
And when I'm sleeping I have to have my favorite stuffed animal. If anything ever happens to it, I could grow an attachment to another one, but it will take a couple months before I feel comfortable with it. Or else it's really hard for me to fall asleep. I already had to switch stuffed animals once.

these are my fave vids from u guys, i hope they keep going for a long time
as an adult thumb sucker, once i was like 12 i quit doing it in public due to bullying, for me itâs an anxiety thing plus a mix of the trauma wa-zoo. i understand the urge to do it in public but everything needs management.
âI looove coffeeâ as Iâm drinking my second cup of coffee this morning đ
Real estate agents definitely lie. I used to work in one as an admin and the amount of shit theyâd do to get a sale đ. Itâs management though not so much the estate agent themselves.
As someone who sucked their fingers until i was 11 with professional help, part of it can be comfort, while the other was routine. I just got used to it and it felt like an actual addiction where if you didnt do it, you'd have withdrawl symptoms. As for the blanket part, i still have an attachment to a stuffed animal (due to anxiety) and putting it up to your nose isnt nessessarily for the "childhood" smell or anything, its also just the comfort of the action. I dont pay attention to smell, its just the action of putting it there can be very calming especially with calming anxiety.
I'm the same way. I can't sleep without my stuffed animal. And it's like I grow an attachment to a specific one. If I have to replace it then it takes a while to get that same amount of comfort from it. But it just helps having it up against my face when I sleep.
Damn Iâm the same. 16 now and trying to stop, it does feel like a genuine addiction :/ I want to get braces so that my front tooth goes back in (thankfully seems to be going in itself a little!) but itâs harder than people think
