    Being that close to the road, the lagoon scenes had to present lots of challenges. There are times you could sense the voices were dubbed in scenes at the lagoon. Thanks for taking us there, Rick. Wishing you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a Happy New Year.

      @bradsmack1 Před 4 lety +1

      Yep, Big Jim Pruett was his character's name. That "Little Buddy" thing is just the contribution the writers (and producers) dig when they hire somebody....what can they, personally, bring to the character that isn't on the page (think Megan Mellally's high-pitched voice for her "Will & Grace" Karen character....the writers didn't know she could do that, and it wasn't until several eps in that she ratcheted up her voice's pitch even higher)!

    It's like going on a religious pilgrimage! What a sacred site. They did such a good job making the lagoon, it looked pretty natural so I always assumed they shot it out in the countryside, not next to a highway! Too bad they didn't keep it has a place for crews to go relax on breaks.

    • @jondstewart
      @jondstewart Před 2 lety +3

      I know what you mean. As a child I always wondered why they had the lagoon as their focal point for everything except the pilot episode when they were actually on a beach with the SS Minnow!
      And of course all the other scenes didn’t look like they were on a tropical island with the sun beaming down. It was a man-made set!

  • @terrymyers699

    The pilot was filmed in Hawaii, as was the first "aired" episode. And the Echo Park lake and island were used to film the second episode as they built the sets and created the backlot lagoon. Because it would get so noisy from traffic on the 405 freeway a lot of times they had to film the exterior shots in the very early mornings or late afternoons to avoid the sounds of cars and trucks in the distance.

    • @rp4254
      @rp4254 Před 4 lety +2

      Only the pilot episode of Gilligan's Island was filmed entirely in Hawaii.
      The first aired episode "Two on A Raft" only uses the opening teaser from the pilot. All 98 episodes were shot entirely at CBS Radford and three episodes from Season 1 filmed some exterior scenes at Zumba Beach, Malibu.
      Gilligan's Island was never filmed at Echo Park! That is false information posted on the internet which is not true. Again all 98 episodes from 1964-67 were shot entirely at CBS Radford in Studio City, Ca.

    FYI, the studio is typically open to the public one day a year for a charity event. Used to be 4th of July fireworks, last I checked they do a 5K run or some such (not on 4-July), but probably allow "family" (cough cough) to attend. I went to the 4th of July several times, and they let you roam over most of the lot. Some stages were open, some of the office buildings as well. Recommend going to the new charity event if you want a rare opportunity to actually see around the lot.
    As someone else posted on this video, there is a "Lagoon Building", on the far side of the parking lot from the street. The building name sign is even in the Gilligan's Island titles font. It is possible the lagoon was large enough to have been across both the building an parking lot areas, I suppose.
    The studio was originally built by Mack Sennett, the Keystone Cops producer. He fell on hard times, and it was owned by multiple "Poverty Row" studios after him, including Republic Pictures. They had an up and coming cowboy movie star named John Wayne working for them at the time. There is a some sort of studio paint or fabrication shop right at the end of New York street, and if you look in the windows you can see the old "Republic" sign kept there.

    Hey Rick. Thanks for the videos. The Sater Parking Stucture Lagoon you showed on Radford does not sit atop the location of the lagoon. There was a small park located in the lot across a road on the other side of the structure. That is where the lagoon was. There is now a 3 year old or so office building with parking on the 2 lower floors called "The Lagoon Building" on that spot. You cannot see it from the street. I know because I work there.

    Re the lagoon location and the sound of the neighborhood: this is a common problem with ALL location filming. It is almost impossible to mic effectively outdoors. Everything gets in the soundtrack. Wind, birds, traffic noise, aircraft, etc. Most location shots have the entire dialog dubbed in post production. Then there is weather and lighting. In LA they have great weather. It can still interrupt you filming. High winds can happen any time of the year. Outdoor light changes throughout the day. When you are on a budget and have a studio available, the choice is obvious.

What was the "Gladiator Arena" is stage 3 at CBSSC, and directly across from the present-day Stage 2. At that time, the original Roseanne was taped in Stage 2, and I can safely assume that where they're doing the current revival (The Connors) in the same soundstage as well. That place has a LOT of TV history there--Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart (both of his '70s and 80s sitcoms), A Different World, Seinfeld, That '70s Show, and so on. Excellent video 👍

      In 2007 I walked in the filled in lagoon site amongst the prefab bungalows. The little Koi puddle with the little Home Depot bridge over it was there an is a designated homage to the lagoon. Around 2016 or so all that was replaced by a multi story parking / production office building. It is officially called “The Lagoon Building.”

    Rick this is Rick , thanks for going to the location, I grew up watching Gilligans Island before to school or after. I hate that so many things that meant so much to me in my youth, is now gone. Like the Gilligans Island Lagoon, me and my Parents use to go to 3 Cincinnati Reds Games a year from 1973 to 1979, and I cannot tell you the feeling I had seeing Riverfront Stadium in the distance and then walking in and getting your program to keep score and seeing Rose,Bench,Morgan,Perez,Foster,Griffey ,CONCEPCION,& GERONIMO. . Now Riverfront has been tore down, on me and my wife’s Honeymoon we saw the Mariners play in Seattle, in the King Dome , now they tore it down.😭

    I heard about the lagoon being made into a parking lot. Probably from either my oldest sister, or one of her friends. She made several trips to LA, to see Leonard Nimoy she ran one of his fan clubs. Meet Mr. Nimoy in St. Louis, at a convention after Star Trek two The Wrath of Khan. Thanks for taking us to the studio.

    I thought at one point in a video you showed (or maybe someone else) that the "Lagoon" was filmed at a "Park" that had a "Pond"? They showed it. Thank you so much! For taking the trip. I bet a lot of people thought you were going to film "inside". I grew up watching Gilligans island when I came home from school. People would kid me I had a body like Gilligan in grade school. And I still do! Thanks again! Rick😃

    Great to see Rick. I remember on our first trip to Los Angeles we attended a taping of The Price is Right at CBS studios at 7800 Beverly Blvd. Since many shows are taped there, I thought Gilligan's Island was done there as well. There's even a parking structure next to the building. Which of course I thought was where the lagoon was. I was disappointed when I realized it was done at a different studio. Thanks for letting us see where the real studio is. Have a great Holiday Season! Take care.

    There was a time that when you went to the universal tours at universal studios, part of the tour was seeing the actual sound stages. On one of these tours, it was the set of “All in the Family”.

  • @pmafterdark

    Very interesting to see as I loved the show as a kid and always thought the lagoon was filmed at some actual island somewhere lol. Too bad there weren't actual street photos from that period available that you could frame next to how it looks today. Thanks for the trip!
