Music video by The Who performing Substitute. (C) 1988 Polydor Ltd. (UK) - Hudba
I was listening to in 1966 when i was a 16 year old mod still listening now 74 year old northern souler😅
I was born in 1966! I've been listening to the Who since retro-mod classmates got me hooked in the early 80's. "Substitute me for her/ Substitute that faux for fur/ Substitute you for my dad/ At least my car won't run too bad..."
as a young 54 year old mod, trust me I am passing it on.
we have a mummies in here💀

Roger Daltrey's presence is electrifying. Effortlessly cool.
Keith and John were unstoppable together! One of the coolest rhythm sections in music ever! I've listened to almost the entire Who discography but they never cease to amaze! Their musical chemistry is phenomenal!
Who's watching this in 2024?
MEEeee 🙂
1000% better music as todays bullshit

@@vincentberner5606My favourite Who song. Daltry's voice really suited this timeless track.
@@helencampbell2064greed. A simple, yet brilliant song. BTW, it's Daltrey.
I agree, they're definitely my favorite band of all time.
Never get tired of watching and hearing Keith Moon play the drums. Wow.
He's not even playing the drums here. It's the studio version, Townshend and Ox are playing their actual parts(Ox looks to be faking some of it pretty blatantly) ans Keith isn't even playing in time he's jjst messing around knowing it doesn't matter. Amd that's just who Keith was.
@@stylish_rubble314 You are absolutely correct. The track has acoustic guitar in it and Keith is playing an electric in this video. Of course, Keih overdubbed an electric part in the recording so there is both...
@@ultramusicman Keith? Since when does HE play the guitar?
I'm sure you meant Pete.@@ultramusicman

No one can Substitute The Who
The rams did
I'm going to do it in some months.

No one can be substitute for The Who!!
No one rights like that.
Peter Noone cannot be a substitute player in The Who.

Awesome
John's smile, Roger's blinking eyes, Keith's bobbing head and Pete's dance are among the best in this video!!..
The Who were thoughtful, intelligent, edgy, straight ahead rockers, sometimes 'mods,' and each member was a master of his instrument. For Pete and Roger, their voices were also their instruments. Pete's songwriting often showed a superior intellect. This band was not afraid to push the boundaries of propriety. Just look at the cover of their album, Who's Next. I became a Who fan somewhat later in life, introduced to them by a dear high school friend. Getting to know the progression of the Who's music has been a great journey.
Don't miss 1970 Live At Leeds..my fave!!!
Unbelievable that word would be so popular these days who before its time .

It's taken me 61 years to realise why people like The Who so much.

Glad you've figured it out!

It took the heart out of the band when those two died
and theris no substitutes for them they¨re unique
"Substitute you for my mom, at least I get my washing done" - priceless line
In the 60s, I was always puzzled by this line. I thought it was strange if his girlfriend did the washing better than his mum, as this line implies. Only recently did it occur to me, perhaps the writer of the song was one of the people who confuse "substitute" with "replace". "Replace you with my mum" would make much more sense - although, of course, it would not scan!
nah, he's saying that he could ditch the girl and go live with his mum. at least she'll do his washing.

The Who was so much more than a mere rock band...they were a four piece avant garde symphony orchestra whose art was best appreciated live at 150+ decibels!
That songs sounds just as fresh today
I never saw anyone hold drumsticks like Keith does.
if you notice he turns his sticks around
It looks like he's just mucking about but that's actually how he played.
Since he isn't really playing, is he just screwing around because it's a sham?
I'm not surprised...that is terrible. He does all the work with his elbows instead of his wrists.
He was pretending. It was his version of humor. Much admired by those who don't mind cringing simultaneously.
Listened to this on AM radio. Just starting to rock when I first heard this

What I love about the Who, is you can dance the shit outta their songs, best ever drum/base duo ever💜
This has everything, angst, humour, passion - I defy anyone not to be energised by this.

clothes in the sixties were fuckin amazing!!!..mods had so much style
the the super ultra stylish "mod" clothes where nothing more than the regular clothes men wore in italy.
just as the english have a fascination with french food (thier food sucks flying dog fuck)
they uave a fascination with italian clothes
you like that look?
you want that style?
easy
find an italian taylor and bring some money
rockhard That's not true at all? Yes, the mod looks were inspired by the sleekness of Italian clothing, as with the scooters and looking "smart", but the over eccentricity of the mid 60's mod fashion, like Townshend's backside of the jacket or all of Entwistle's medals can't possibly be classified as "regular".
Hell no! Some looked cool, while others scare me!
Yeah back in 65/66... come late 67 and the long fringed jackets and poodle head (Daltry) came to the fore
Everything that came after the early and mid 60s mods has been a serious downgrade, imo.

This song was released 4 years before I was born. I am now 52 years old and still love the Who. I grew up listening to them, and their songs never get old or out dated. I was never really a Beatles fan, but the Who, that is a whole other story. There's not one band in 2021 making music as vital as this. The mid to late 1960s and 1970s will never be repeated. Unparalleled.
Yes there is. You need to listen to more bands.
@@paulcollins5586 I receive new music every day. You need to develop better critical listening skills and a higher bar. There are no bands today that are on par with the major players of the 1960s or 1970s. ZERO. There are no Led Zeppelin's, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Pink Floyds, Black Sabbaths, etc. I stand by my statement. Name a new band that matches any of the above. I love some new bands, but no one will be listening to many of them 50 years from now. Poor John. Always overlooked by everyone filming.
John was nuts but compared to the rest of 'em he was mundane
1:53 he smiles as the camera is finally on him
The Who is one of the very few musical groups that successfully blended Big city culture & small town medley's … Mod fashion, Stage violence " Smashing up guitars, drums and P.A. equipment " along with smug rebellion. As a matter of fact the who where the very first band to do this. The Who where the first ones to vomit in a bar and find their distance to a stage to far ( Woodstock ). Yep!… " Long live Rock "
Roger, Pete and Keith are legendary and will never forget.......... speacially Keith, one of the very best drummer, all time!!!!
Keith Moon had an awesome kick drum which is what really made him a great drummer. I hear so many drummers who can't get that right but Moon did. Same with Bonham, as long as you got that kick and can do it in time you can pretty much do anything else. Listen to the middle part of this song "Im a substitute for another guy" it sounds like a Harley davidson in idle BAM BAM BAM BAM
You don't see too many drummers hit their crash cymbal with their head!
Nice Outfit and well dressed Band Members, i like the Style in the Sixties.
Bring back the 60s please!!!
Greatest ever British injustice. The who never got a number one
I haven't seen a drummer holding those drumsticks the way moon does. Arguably the best ever.
Gotta love Keith Moon's drumming style here.

Not my original thought, but this band had a lead singer, a lead guitarist, a lead bass player, and a lead drummer. Double check on the drummer!

Gregory Eatroff I have it.
Where did you get it?
Joanne Carman Hey, really, where did you get it?
Yeah, where'd you get it? It's freaking fabulous.

Pete was so talented he could make a Tele sound acoustic.
Neither the bass nor guitar are wired to amps, so I guess they're both acoustic
Cus They were miming!
Pete's Fender custom shop Strat has a piezo pickup so it can sound acoustic.
On the record Pete was playing acoustic , in the film they are miming .
Did nobody spot the irony in the original comment?
I am a german WHO-Fan since beginning. In 1965 I wrote from Germany to the Magazin NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS in Durham/GB and asked for a free copy. I got it and found an Advertisment about a Single-Record "I can't explain" by a band named THE WHO. What a funny name I thought. In a Record-Shop in my hometown I asked for this one, but without success. Some weeks later I heard at night by RADIO LUXEMBURG the Record. and THE WHO had won a Fan for ever. Radio Lux. was the only Record Staton with good Rock-Music at this time we could hear here in Germany. AFN too.

Wonderful band, song and performance.ove the shirt and jacket.
It was the 1990's when i was properly introduced to the Who. And this is the song that sold we to this band.
Keith is so on top of his game here, just having a great time making music -the way music is supposed to be.
Exactly. 19 years old and playing the greatest follow-up single to "My Generation". Doesn't get any better.
John entwistle is a legend! The man that founded the Who and the greatest bass player of all time.
I dunno I'd say it's a tie between JE & the Stones Bill Wyman
As far as the British Invasion bass players go
@Knut Rosetten Jaco was technically better but not musically. Jazz solo music sucks, no matter how much of a master the player is. Its meaningless. Bass only sounds meaningful in a supporting role in a song. Same with drums. Jaco isn't well known for good reason.
@Knut Rosetten He isn't a better player musically because he didn't make better music. Using the bass guitar as a virtuoso solo instrument is in bad taste. That's not proper to bass guitars. He wouldn't have wanted to play in a rock band and he wouldn't have fit in with one. He was a jazz snob. Its much better to be a good player in a great band that plays great songs than a virtuoso who plays experimental music that has no human interest or expressive meaning.
Ever heard of a nice Jewish boy by the name of Geddy Lee?
Man, fuck this life take me back to the 60's and 70's Baby! I need a time machine people!

The Who is the best band of all time. They eclipse the Beatles and Stones by far. Absolutely f...ing amazing.
For The Who's sound in this song and many others, the most important player is John Entwistle. He plays 'out of this world' bass and lead guitar on his bass.
Entwistle was amazing, so many clever bass lines which don't just simply underscore the chord progression. The Real Me is probably the best use of bass for me
Totally agree on Mr. Entwhistle`s playing. Played so well.
Keith was great in back in the day. My favorite rock drummer. The whole f-ing band is awesome.

John Entwistle was The who, Its his band, He founded the who, And was probably the greatest bass player that ever lived, he was brilliant, He never got the credit he deserved.
Frank Jackson bass players always get the shaft. Especially when they're the strong silent type like John, real shame
John was a master. But It was Roger who started the band under a different name as lead guitarist, then later vocalist. John was recruited by him. John brought Pete to Rodgers attention. He was added. It has always been Daltrey's band. But John was so very important to their sound.

The Who were formed by John Entwistle And Roger Daltrey! They formed the band at school, Roger bumped into John after school and John had a homemade Bass, then they started the band and got Pete in, This was years before Keith moon was even on the scene.
